Nowadays everybody seems to think that they know English. Many people speak it but few speak it really well. Practice is necessary in speaking English well.
Reading is also one of the things that will help you to speak English better. Read whenever you can and whatever you like! Read papers and Internet sites that you like in English every day. Nothing can match the excitement and happiness when a native speaker tells you that your English is very good!

C
In my ninth-grade writing class last year, I met a cowboy who saved his town, a strict father who demanded his son earn straight A’s, and a modern-day Juliet who died of heartbreak after her parents rejected the love of her young life. More than once, I found myself wondering just how my students, who’d created these people, knew their subjects so well.
But things were different for their first essay, which was about the question: “Why is writing important?” Most of the essays filled less than one page, and few contained a sentence that could be interpreted as a thesis (论点) statement. I was shocked. Then I realized that the problem was the question itself. They could have written pages on the necessity of computers, but writing, in and of itself, simply didn’t strike them as important. This would have to change.
As a new unit started, I asked everyone to write a persuasive piece on a health-related topic of their choice. This time they found the exercise much more interesting. For the next two assignments, a personal-narrative unit followed by a creative-writing workshop, I only required that the piece meet the specifications of its genre (体裁) and that it contain a thesis. The results were staggering. The students took on diverse topics and turned in stories, 10 to 20 pages each, with characters that broadened my view and touched my heart.
I walked into class believing that writing is important as a means of communication. However, my students demonstrated something more important to me. When the final bell rang in June, I walked away with a yearbook full of messages about writing’s most powerful significance — the ability to connect people, to put us in another’s skin, to teach us what it means to be human.
28. Who are the people mentioned at the beginning of paragraph 1?
A. Ninth graders. B. Students’ parents.
C. Modern writers. D. Fictional characters.
29. Why did the students perform poorly in writing their first essay?
A. They were not given enough time. B. They had a very limited vocabulary.
C. They misunderstood the question. D. They had little interest in the topic.
30. What does the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Mixed. B. Amazing. C. Similar. D. Disturbing.
31. What does the author’s experience show?
A. Teaching is learning. B. Still waters run deep.
C. Knowledge is power. D. Practice makes perfect.
D 29. D 30. B 31. A
根据文章第一段中“In my ninth-grade writing class last year, I met a cowboy who saved his town, a strict father who demanded his son earn straight A’s, and a modern-day Juliet who died of heartbreak after her parents rejected the love of her young life. More than once, I found myself wondering just how my students, who’d created these people, knew their subjects so well.
根据文章第二段中“Most of the essays filled less than one page, and few contained a sentence that could be interpreted as a thesis (论点) statement. I was shocked. Then I realized that the problem was the question itself. They could have written pages on the necessity of computers, but writing, in and of itself, simply didn’t strike them as important.
根据文章第三段中划线词下文“The students took on diverse topics and turned in stories, 10 to 20 pages each, with characters that broadened my view and touched my heart.
通读全文,再根据文章最后一段中“I walked into class believing that writing is important as a means of communication. However, my students demonstrated something more important to me. When the final bell rang in June, I walked away with a yearbook full of messages about writing’s most powerful significance — the ability to connect people, to put us in another’s skin, to teach us what it means to be human. 故选A。
D
In the first half of the twentieth century, Karl von Frisch, a scientist who studied animal behavior, changed our impression of honey bees. He discovered the “waggle (摇摆) dance”, which may not be considered as a language, but a form of communication. Actually, it was one of our first understandings that bees may do something like “thinking”.
Clint Perry, a scientist at Queen Mary University of London, has spent much time studying how bees think. He gave bees a choice between landing on a place above a black bar (横木) or a place below it. If they landed above the bar, they would find a delicious sugary drink. If they chose the place below the black bar, they found a terrible drink. He made the test harder or easier by moving the landing places farther from or closer to the black bar. But bees also had the choice of avoiding the task if they weren’t sure they would succeed. Perry found that bees avoided the test when it was difficult and gave it a try when it was easy.
Perry pointed out that we can’t know for sure from tests like this whether bees are actually judging by their own knowledge or simply quitting the task because of an unhappy connection with the terrible drink.
We may also have to rethink how we view the rest of the insect world. There are a lot of small creatures (生物) flying around in the garden. Who knows what those tiny minds might be able to do?
32. Why does the author mention Karl von Frisch in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce a famous scientist. B. To change the impression of bees.
C. To show early study of bees’ thinking. D. To stress the importance of bees’ study.
33. How did Clint Perry make the task difficult?
A. By setting more choices. B. By giving challenging orders.
C. By making landing places farther. D. By reducing the sweet level of the drinks.
34. What is Clint Perry’s attitude to the result of the research?
A. Supportive. B. Uncaring. C. Negative. D. Uncertain.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Insects’ thinking ability will improve. B. The number of small insects will increase.
C. Study on insects’ brains has a long way to go. D. Insects’ life habits will be a focus of research.
C 33. C 34. D 35. C
根据第一段“In the first half of the twentieth century, Karl von Frisch, a scientist who studied animal behavior, changed our impression of honey bees. He discovered the “waggle (摇摆) dance”, which may not be considered as a language, but a form of communication. Actually, it was one of our first understandings that bees may do something like “thinking”.(20世纪上半叶,研究动物行为的科学家卡尔·冯·弗里施发现了“摇摆舞”,改变了我们对蜜蜂的印象。
根据第二段“He made the test harder or easier by moving the landing places farther from or closer to the black bar.(他把着陆点移得离黑条更远或更近,从而使测试变得更困难或更容易)”可知,Clint Perry通过将着陆点移得离黑条更远来加大任务难度。
根据第三段“Perry pointed out that we can’t know for sure from tests like this whether bees are actually judging by their own knowledge or simply quitting the task because of an unhappy connection with the terrible drink.(佩里指出,我们不能从这样测试中确切地知道,蜜蜂是真的根据自己的知识来判断,还是仅仅因为与糟糕的饮料有不愉快的联系而退出任务)”可知,Clint Perry对于这个实验的结果不是十分确定。
根据最后一段“We may also have to rethink how we view the rest of the insect world. There are a lot of small creatures (生物) flying around in the garden. Who knows what those tiny minds might be able to do?(我们也可能不得不重新思考我们如何看待昆虫世界的其他部分。

根据前文“high school is better than college”可知,此处是将高中与大学作比较,应用比较级,且与“more fun”并列,little的比较级是less,表示“更少的”压力。
“have sth. to do”为固定结构,意为“有某事要做”,此处用动词不定式to remember作后置定语,修饰“too many wonderful times”,表示“有太多要去回忆的美好时光”。故填to remember。
keep in touch with sb. 故填with。
故填The。
故填were。
故填was attracted。
“be confused about”是固定短语,意为“对……
分析句子结构,“____10____ everyone wants to belong somewhere and feel loved by others”是同位语从句,解释说明“the fact”的具体内容,从句中不缺少成分,所以用that引导,只起连接作用,无实际意义。故填that。

Hi Coward,
I’m sorry to know that you have trouble adapting yourself to senior high school. However, the situation is easy to change if you take my suggestions into consideration.
First of all, why not communicate with your teacher face to face? By doing this, your teacher will know your inner thoughts and help you solve this problem. What’s more, if I were you, I would be engaged in various kinds of activities held by class actively. More importantly, it would be a good idea if you made some friends with common interests. If you do this, you can share happiness and sadness with them and help you get to know them to get rid of loneliness at high school.
I hope you will find these ideas useful, and fit in well with your new school. Look forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Then, you will see that the number of known words is increasing and you are able to speak with more skills. Then you will have made the foundations and a good basis of English. It is not good to stop and get stuck there.
Going to England or an English-speaking country is a good choice, but many people cannot afford it. If you cannot go, reading and speaking with your friends will also help you to practice your English. However, I think it is very good to visit an English-speaking country to see and test your knowledge in everyday life. You will understand the everyday usage of the language in its natural environment. There your level of English is going to improve even faster. Your ability to speak English is better. Nothing can match the excitement and happiness when a native speaker tells you that your English is very good!
Finally, in order to speak English well, you must be persistent and do it every day. It is like playing the piano. Pianists play it every day and so should you. Include English in your life and you will see where it is going. Practice, Practice! Read, write and improve your language skills and you are on your way when you will be able to speak it with more and more confidence!

Perry pointed out that we can’t know for sure from tests like this whether bees are actually judging by their own knowledge or simply quitting the task because of an unhappy connection with the terrible drink
