However, it has now been discovered that one man has been keeping it alive. Unknown to the world, Blas Jaime, an 89 year old Argentinian man, has kept the language from dying out. Thanks to the efforts of linguist Viegas Barros, Jaime was discovered, and the pair have now authored a book together, dedicated to restoring the language. Blas learnt the Chaná language from his mother, whose family has passed the language down through the generations. Growing up, Blas’s mother taught him the Chaná language and stories which she urged him to keep secret in order to “protect” them. Decades later when Blas retired he sought out other Chaná people to chat and share the stories with. However, he made the shocking discovery that no one else appeared to know the language. In fact, scholars had actually considered the language extinct since 1815. Blas said, “I exist. I am here,” kicking off a new mission to preserve and bring the Chaná language back to life, while also helping to place the indigenous (本土的) group back on the map. Over the past two decades, Blas has worked closely with UNESCO to help preserve languages. Together with Viegas Barros, the pair have created a dictionary with over 1,000 words. Argentina has a complex history that has led to a disconnection between modern-day Argentinians and their indigenous roots. However, Blas’ work has inspired many other indigenous people in Argentina to explore their ancestry and history. “Language is what gives you identity... If someone doesn’t have their language, they’re not a people,” said Blas. Blas’s daughter, Evangelina Jaime, has taken up the responsibility of preserving the Chaná language and culture learned from her father, ensuring that this vital piece of cultural heritage is not lost. Although the exact number of Chaná people remaining in Argentina is uncertain, the efforts of Evangelina and others like her are helping to keep the Chaná language and culture alive and flowering. 24. What took the language scholars by surprise? A. The roots of the Chaná language. B. The rediscovery of an extinct language. C. The history of the modern-day Argentinians. D. The existence of the indigenous Chaná people. 25. Why were Blas’ words mentioned in paragraph 5? A. To remind Argentinians to seek their roots. B. To illustrate the wisdom of indigenous people. C. To guarantee the conservation of a cultural heritage. D. To promote the popularity of an endangered language. 26. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Most Argentinians will connect with their origins. B. Evangelina is key to the spread of the Chaná language. C. Few Chaná people participate in the preservation efforts. D. The Chaná cultural heritage will survive and grow stronger. 27. Which of the following best describes Blas Jaime? A. Strong-willed and sympathetic. B. Responsible and devoted. C. Determined and talented. D. Warm-hearted and ambitious. C A machine can now not only beat you at chess it can also outperform you in debate. Last week, in a public debate in San Francisco, a software program called Project Debater beat its human opponents, including Noa Ovadia, Israel’s former national debating champion. Brilliant though it is, Project Debater has some weaknesses. It takes sentences from its library of documents and prebuilt arguments and strings them together. This can lead to the kinds of errors no human would make. Such wrinkles will no doubt be ironed out, yet they also point to a fundamental problem. As Kristian Hammond, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Northwestern University, put it: “There’s never a stage at which the system knows what it’s talking about.” What Hammond is referring to is the question of meaning, and meaning is central to what distinguishes the least intelligent of humans from the most intelligent of machines. A computer works with symbols. Its program specifies a set of rules to transform one string of symbols into another. But it does not specify what those symbols mean. Indeed, to a computer, meaning is irrelevant. Humans, in thinking, talking, reading and writing, also work with symbols. But for humans, meaning is everything. When we communicate, we communicate meaning. What matters is not just the outside of a string of symbols, but the inside too, not just how they are arranged but what they mean. Meaning emerges through a process of social interaction, not of computation, interaction that shapes the content of the symbols in our heads. The rules that assign meaning lie not just inside our heads, but also outside, in society, in social memory, social conventions and social relations. It is this that distinguishes humans from machines. And that’s why, however astonishing Project Debater may seem, the tradition that began with Socrates and Confucius will not end with artificial intelligence. 28. Why does the author mention Noa Ovadia in the first paragraph? A. To explain the use of a software program. B. To show the cleverness of Project Debater. C. To introduce the designer of Project Debater. D. To emphasize the fairness of the competition. 29 What does the underlined word “wrinkles” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Arguments. B. Doubts. C. Errors. D. Differences. 30. What is Project Debater unable to do according to Hammond? A. Create rules. B. Comprehend meaning. C. Talk fluently. D. Identify difficult words. 31. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Social interaction is key to understanding symbols. B. The human brain has potential yet to be developed. C. Ancient philosophers set good examples for debaters. D. Artificial intelligence ensures humans a bright future. Over the past few decades, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have started to transform many parts of life, affecting everything from industry to personal communication. ___32___ Supporters of AI argue it can improve efficiency and creativity in many areas. Among all those organized group activities, the kids’ favorite is called ARK night, with ARK standing for Acts of Random Kindness. A couple of times a year, on a Sunday night, we go out into our community to perform kind acts for others. We split into small groups and complete assignments around town. One group typically goes downtown to where the homeless population is gathered and hands out sandwiches and cold water in the summer, and hand warmers and hot bread in the winter. Sometimes a group makes posters and goes to local police and fire stations to say thank you. We often have groups that visit nursing homes and hospitals to share a smile and conversation with the patients. One time, the small group I was leading left Post-it notes with positive messages on the windshields (挡风玻璃) of all of the vehicles in the visitors’ parking lot at the hospital. The hope was that someone who was sad or worn out after visiting a patient would be cheered up by our note. We had spent the first part of the evening in my home, with the kids writing positive messages on their Positive notes, things like “Tomorrow is another day.” “Keep smiling.” “Things will get better.” and “Have a nice day.” One girl had curvy, beautiful handwriting and she decorated the corners of her notes with pretty multi-colored hearts. After the kids left their notes on all those cars, one girl said to me, “We didn’t see one single person. How will we know that our notes made a difference?” “We’ll just have to trust that they did” I said. Normally, the kids could see the reactions of the people they were helping, and I could tell they were disappointed at the lack of interaction with people during this assignment. I wondered about it, too. Would the notes cheer anyone up, or would they be thrown away like the advertisements that are sometimes left on car windshields? One day, I noticed a post by a friend of mine on Facebook. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It was one of our Post-it notes! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 平邑一中高64级实验部高二上学期第一次月考 英语试题 全卷满分150分 考试用时120分钟 说明:本试卷满分150分,分为第Ⅰ卷(选择题)和第Ⅱ卷(非选择题)两部分,第Ⅰ卷为第1页至第10页,第Ⅱ卷为第11页至第12页。 What does the woman want the man to do? But how we can help people who live longer live better has been a big challenge. Now, a number of businesses are offering services specifically designed for the elderly. One of them is True Call. True Call is a UK telephone communication service that can block unwanted telephone calls. Businessman Robert Smith has set the system in his mother’s home, since a group of people had stolen her life savings through phone calls a few months earlier. Another one called Red & Yellow Care is a health care service. According to the director Mike Hart, their staff is trained to be able to explain their service in a simple and clear way, and unafraid of repeating the information. All the training is to provide safer and friendlier service for the elderly. Then there is Safeway, a supermarket chain. One of the staff, Martin Bateman says that he and his co-workers now ask older customers more frequently if they need help at the checkouts. These customers may not know what to do with the self-checkout machines. All in all, the elderly are gaining increasing attention from the society. They’ll be living longer and better. A Applying for Summer Academy Application Process Summer Academy is open to high school students. 24. B 25. A 26. D 27. Together with Viegas Barros, the pair have created a dictionary with over 1,000 words.(在过去的二十年里,布拉斯一直与联合国教科文组织紧密合作,致力于保护语言。 B。 C A machine can now not only beat you at chess, it can also outperform you in debate. 29. What does the underlined word “wrinkles” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Arguments. B. Doubts. C. Errors. 28. B 29. C 30. B 31. A computer works with symbols. Its program specifies a set of rules to transform one string of symbols into another. But it does not specify what those symbols mean. Indeed, to a computer, meaning is irrelevant.(Hammond所指的是意义的问题,而意义是区分最不聪明的人类和最聪明的机器的关键。 根据最后一段的“Meaning emerges through a process of social interaction, not of computation, interaction that shapes the content of the symbols in our heads. The rules that assign meaning lie not just inside our heads, but also outside, in society, in social memory, social conventions and social relations.(意义的产生是通过社会互动的过程,而不是计算的过程,这种互动塑造了我们头脑中符号的内容。 故选A。 Over the past few decades, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have started to transform many parts of life, affecting everything from industry to personal communication. ___32___ Supporters of AI argue it can improve efficiency and creativity in many areas. Dear editor, _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear editor, Recently, our class have had a discussion about whether we middle school students should carry smart phones at school. Opinions concerning this hot topic vary from person to person. The majority of students are in favor of it. In the first place, smart phones can provide them with a fantastic platform where they can communicate with friends and keep up with the society. In the second place, it is more convenient for them to turn to others for help when in trouble. However, some students hold the view that students should be banned from carrying smart phones, because phones can make them distracted easily. As far as I am concerned, we’d better leave phones at home not only because we students should mainly concentrate on study, but also because we are easily addicted to them. 词汇积累 讨论:discussion → debate 支持:in favor of → support 方便的:convenient → handy 专注于:concentrate on → focus on 2. Opinions concerning this hot topic vary from person to person. Opinions, which concern this hot topic, vary from person to person. 1】The majority of students are in favor of it. How will we know that our notes made a difference?” “We’ll just have to trust that they did,” I said. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One day, I noticed a post by a friend of mine on Facebook. She described a series of unpleasant things that had happened to her over the weekend. “But then,” she added, “I was hurrying to work this morning and stopped quickly in front of the bank to draw money. There, on the side of the ATM was the nicest little note. It made my day.” She included a photo of the note. It was one of our Post-it notes. I recognized it immediately from the little heart on the corner. I have no idea how that note traveled from the hospital across town to the bank, but I’m pretty sure that it must have encouraged some strangers. Knowing that what we did was meaningful, I was overwhelmed with joy. I “liked” her post and couldn’t wait to share this warm story with kids in my group. Small kindness did matter and we would definitely continue with our ARK activity. Maybe more frequently. 词汇激活 行为类 ①发生:happened/occurred ②匆忙做某事:hurrying to do/rush to do/dash to do ③鼓励:encouraged /inspired 情绪类 ①不愉快:unpleasant/boring/uncomfortable ②高兴地:with joy/with pleasure/happily 【点睛】[高分句型1].
