It was the sight of her son, Justin, dragging a 36-kilogram portable air conditioner upstairs. Beverly’s central air conditioning had stopped working in the middle of a 32℃ heat wave. She had mentioned to her son and he’d shown up as a surprise. As she watched him sweat and struggle while fixing it, she felt a wave of gratitude and appreciation. Awe is that feeling we get when something is so vast that it stops us in our tracks. Often, it challenges or expands our thinking. Research shows that awe experiences decrease stress and increase overall satisfaction. It can also help our relationships, making us feel more sympathetic and less greedy, more supported by and more likely to help others. Most of us associate awe with something rare and beautiful: nature, music or a spiritual experience. But people can bring about awe, and not just public heroes. Often, this interpersonal awe is a response to life’s big, sweeping changes. We can be awed by our nearest and dearest — the people sitting next to us on the sofa, or chatting on the phone. But it happens in smaller moments, too. John Bargh, a psychologist, said he was truly awestruck by his then-five-year-old daughter. When she heard another child crying, she grabbed her toy, walked over to the boy and handed it to him. Unfortunately, we can’t make someone else behave in a way that’s awesome. But we can prepare ourselves to notice it when they do — and take steps to boost the emotion’s positive effects. 4. Why does the writer tell Beverly’s story? A. To show sympathy for her. B. To cite an example of awe. C. To express appreciation to her son. D. To start a discussion about awe. 5. What is the benefit of awe? A. It stops our anxiety. B. It simplifies our thinking. C. It satisfies regular needs. D. It promotes positive emotions. 6. In which situation can we feel awed between the nearest? A. Admiring scenery in a national park. B. Enjoying classic music in a concert hall. C. Receiving a call from a long-lost friend. D. Getting the signature of a famous athlete. 7. What can be implied from the last paragraph? A. Arise in time of trouble. B. Behave in an awesome way. C. Sense amazement in daily life. D. Increase chance of finding awe. C Fears about climate change and global conflict destroying plant species and changing the face of the planet have prompted environmentalists and researchers to send 30,000 new seed samples to a “doomsday vault (末日种子库)” on a remote Norwegian island in the Arctic Ocean. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault on Spitsbergen Island buried so deep inside a mountain as to withstand nuclear war and other disasters, was constructed to reestablish plant life following a worldwide disaster. Opened in 2008, the Svalbard Vault serves as a backup for the world’s gene banks, which store the genetic codes of thousands of plant species. It remains naturally cold due to a surrounding layer of permafrost “Climate change and conflict threaten infrastructure and impact food security for over 700 million people in more than 75 countries worldwide,” Stefan Schmitz, an organizer of the facility, said. “Gene banks are stepping up efforts to back up seed collections, and we are proud to support them by providing a safe place in Norway.” Recent deposits include seeds for vegetables and herbs from the Union of Agrioultural Work Committees in Palestine, seeds from farmers in Bolivia, and samples for 1,145 types of maize, rice, sesame, and sorghum from Chad, which are able to endure extreme heat and arid conditions and can be invaluable to countries impacted by global warming. While the seed bank could benefit the entire planet, it is being run and funded by the Norwegian government, in partnership with the Crop Trust and the Nordic Genetic Resource Center. The vault, which cost $ 8.8 million to build, is free to use for depositors wanting to store seeds that could be used to reestablish crop lines after their disappearance because of natural or unnatural disasters. Lise Lykke Steffensen, executive director of the Nordic Genetic Resource Center said, “Humanity depends on a wide diversity of genetic resources to meet future challenges. Therefore, it is comforting that many gene banks choose to be part of this seed deposit. The Svalbard Vault has an important purpose to secure these valuable collections, not least given the state of the world today.” 8. What is the purpose of establishing the Seed Vault? A. To provide seeds to plant on the islands. B. To endure nuclear war and other disasters. C. To store seeds for scientific research. D. To bring plant life back after a big catastrophe. 9. What can we learn from the seeds recently deposited? A. They’re all from developed countries. B. They’re grown only in cold climates. C. They’re valuable for medical purposes. D. They’re used to defend extreme weather. 10. Who can use the Seed Vault for free? A. Farmers from Palestine, Bolivia and Chad. B. Any organization interested in planting seeds. C. Organizations or individuals depositing seeds. D. The Union of Agricultural Work Committees. 11. What’s the Lise Lykke Steffensen’s attitude towards the seed deposit? A. Approving. B. Critical. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent. D More than 3 million square kilometers of the Asian elephant’s historic habitat range has been lost in just three centuries, a new report from an international scientific team led by a University of California San Diego researcher reveals. This dramatic decline may underlie present-day conflicts between elephants and people, the authors argue. Developing new insights from a unique data set that models land-use change over 13 centuries, a research team led by new UC San Diego member Shermin de Silva found that habitats suitable for Asian elephants have been cut by nearly two-thirds within the past 300 years. The largest living land animal in Asia, endangered Asian elephants inhabited grasslands and rainforest ecosystems that once crossed the continent. Analyzing land-use data from the years 850 to 2015, the researchers describe in the journal Scientific Reports a troubling situation in which they estimate that more than 64% of historic suitable elephant habitat across Asia has been lost. While elephant habitats remained relatively stable prior to the 1700s, colonial-era land-use practices in Asia, including forest decrease, farming and agriculture, cut the average habitat size more than 80%, from 99,000 to 16,000 square kilometers. The study also suggests that the remaining elephant populations today may not have enough habitat areas. While 100% of the area within 100 kilometers of the current elephant range was considered suitable habitat in 1700, the proportion (比例) has since declined to less than 50% by 2015. This sets up a high potential for conflicts with people living in those areas as elephant populations change their behavior and adjust to more human-dominated spaces. “In the 1600s and 1700s there is evidence of a dramatic change in land use, not just in Asia, but globally,” said de Silva, an assistant professor in the School of Biological Sciences’ Department of Ecology, Behavior and Evolution, and founder of the nonprofit Trunks & Leaves. “Around the world we see a really dramatic transformation that has consequences that last even to this day.” 12. What did the new report focus on? A. Number of conflicts between elephants and people. B. Changes of the living habitats for Asian elephants. C. The measures for agricultural models of land-use. D. Methods to deal with conflicts between man and animals. 13. What’s the main cause about the loss of the elephant habitats? A. The increase of elephant population. B. People’s living styles in the past 300 years. C. Human activities in elephants’ ecosystems. D. Endangered Elephants’ bad health conditions. 14. Which can best describe de Silva’s attitude toward the environment? A. Positive. B. Indifferent. C. Toleratant. D. Concerned. 15. What is the suitable title for the text? A. Conflicts Between Elephants and Humans B. Loss of Asian Elephant’s habitat Range C. Necessary Change for Elephant Populations D. Human’s Efforts on Saving Asian Elephants How to Refresh Yourself? I stopped and saw a side of dogs I’d never experienced. Staring at me, he began to circle me. Scared, I tried to walk away. The moment my back was turned, he seized my ankle. His teeth locked into my flesh. I screamed and kicked until he let go. I ran home, with the dog chasing me until he gave up near my house. I ran into the house, crying so hard that my mother couldn’t understand what had happened. Once my wounds were cleaned and bandaged (包扎), I told her, “A dog bit me, Mommy. It hurt.” I felt more betrayed than scared—— one of the animals I loved had hurt me for no reason. “I’ll never trust another dog again,” I said. That night, my nightmares grew worse. My fear of dogs grew so intense that I refused to visit my grandfather’s farm, where he had a dog I used to love. I became so terrified that my mom had to walk me past the house where the dog lived every day, and I struggled to focus at school. My teacher contacted my mother and my mom was determined to help me get over this fear. “Gail, you need to overcome this fear,” my mom said as we walked home. “Remember my friend Emma? She has a black Lab named Chips, and she’s invited us to meet him.” Dread filled me. “No, Mommy, please! I hate dogs. They want to hurt me!” “Not Chips,” she said, smiling. “I promise it won’t happen.” Unwillingly, we went to Emma’s house. My heart raced as she opened the door, revealing Chips wagging his tail. “Hello, Chips,” my mom greeted him. As Chips wagged (摇) his tail, I couldn’t shake off the fear that still remained from the previous attack. I know I should greet him too but I was frozen by fear. With my mom’s gentle encouragement, I knew I had to try. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I continued to pat him, feeling something had changed in my mind. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 陇西一中2026届高三第二次月考试卷 英语 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. Unfortunately we can’t make someone else behave in a way that’s awesome. 4. B 5. D 6. C 7. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault on Spitsbergen Island, buried so deep inside a mountain as to withstand nuclear war and other disasters, was constructed to reestablish plant life following a worldwide disaster. C To store seeds for scientific research. A. Approving. B. Critical. C. A The increase of elephant population. Human’s Efforts on Saving Asian Elephants 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. Aiming 42. to 43. easier 44. to experience 45. description## descriptions 【解析】 【导语】本文是说明文。 故填whether/if。 故填have gone/ have been going。 设空处引导非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词the 72-and 144-hour visa-free transit policy,且在从句中作主语,指物,故填which。 故填and。 故填to。 设空处作宾补,invite sb. to do sth. 故填to experience。 Dear David, ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Ming 【答案】Dear David, I'm delighted to learn that you've started learning Chinese! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】With my mom’s gentle encouragement, I knew I had to try. I took a deep breath and slowly reached out my hand towards Chips. My fingers trembled as I extended them towards him and for a moment, I hesitated. Memories of past fear surged through my mind, but I pushed them aside. I closed my eyes briefly and forced myself to touch him. To my surprise, instead of barking or pulling away, Chips simply wagged his tail and leaned into my hand. The softness of his fur under my fingers was comforting, and a small smile crept onto my face. I continued to pat him, feeling something had changed in my mind. Chips wagged his tail, his eyes filled with kindness, not aggression. I sat back, watching him settle at my feet, and the weight of the fear I had carried for so long began to lift. My mom smiled, clearly noticing the change in me, and I smile back. I had thought that all dogs wanted to hurt me, but Chips had proven me wrong. For the first time since the attack, I felt like I could let go of my fear and start to trust again. Only then did I realize that to conquer fear is the beginning of growth. 词汇激活 行为类 ①伸出:reach out/stick out ②强迫:force/compel ③放开:let go of/let loose 情绪类 ①恐惧:fear/dread ②惊讶:to my surprise/to my astonishment 【点睛】[高分句型1] My fingers trembled as I extended them towards him and for a moment, I hesitated.
