(2024·菏泽市单县一模)If someone asks
you whether you know what silence sounds like,

probably be“No”.That is not strange because
our world is filled with noise, from the ringing
of phones to the roar(呼啸)of traffic..We have
become so used to noise that it is difficult for us
to experience true silence.
But Gordon Hempton,an ecologist(生态学

save quiet for over 40 years.According to him,
noise not only causes damage to humans but also
harms animals and plants. He believes that by
saving quiet,we can help protect species(物种)
and the environment, and take care of our
planet.
To achieve this,Hempton has traveled
around the world, collecting natural sounds or
what he calls“experiences of silence”,and
searching for naturally quiet places. In 2005,he
discovered a small place in a forest park that he
considered one of the quietest places in the
world. He thought that by protecting this area
from noise pollution,the positive(积极的)
influence would extend to surrounding(周围的)
areas.But later,he realized it wasn't enough.
So in 2018,he started the Quiet Parks
International(QPI).During the past few years,
the QPI team has identified(确认)around30o
quiet places around the world.
One of Hempton's biggest challenges
