The bell rang. Jada sighed, slowly moved from the lockers where she had been leaning, and headed down the hall to her chemistry class. Honors Chemistry! Jada couldn’t believe that her mom was making her take the class because Jada’s counselor had said that she had real talent in science.
Jada had to admit that she liked science and that last year’s class was a breeze, but come on Honors Chemistry? She wouldn’t know anyone in the class, and they probably wouldn’t know anyone like her.
The good thing about being late is that it shortened the period a bit. The bad thing is that it made her seem like she was making a grand entrance. To make matters worse, the only two seats left in class were at the lab table at the very front of the room.
Jada held her breath and walked in. Everyone’s eyes were on her. She just knew it. They were staring at her coal black hair (freshly dyed) , her black lipstick, her black fingernail polish, and her thrift-store black leather jacket. All she saw were polo shirts and khaki pants.
This can’t get any worse, Jada thought. But at least she didn’t get shouted at by the teacher. He was too busy talking to a new kid. A HUGE new kid, maybe 6'4". He had to weigh at least 250 pounds. A football player, probably. She hated football players. They thought they were so great. That group of jocks that hung out by the cafeteria always made fun of her.
The new kid made his way over to her table with his head down. He had to squeeze into the seat, and his legs wouldn’t fit under the lab table. He shot Jada a glance and turned red.
Mr. Martin, the teacher, began class with this announcement: Okay, everyone. I know most of you know each other from last year’s Honors Physical Science class. Jada sighed loudly. “But just take a minute and introduce yourself to the person sitting at your table. You’ll be partners. You’ll be working closely together all year.”
Jada rolled her eyes and stared straight ahead. Then she heard a surprisingly soft voice from next to her. “Hi. I’m Robert. I’m new here.”
4. What can be learned about Jada from the first two paragraphs?
A. She thought this year’s chemistry class would be a breeze.
B. She wasn’t willing to take the Honors Chemistry class.
C. She was angry that her mother made her go to school
D. She found she didn’t like science as she thought.
5. The writer described Jada’s appearance in paragraph 4 in order to ______.
A. reveal how different she was from her classmates
B. explain why she was late for school that morning.
C. give readers a general impression of science students.
D. imply that she felt sorry for making a grand entrance
6. In paragraph 5, the phrase “that group of jocks” refers to ______.
A. the new kid
B. Jada’s classmates
C. Jada’s teacher
D. football players
7. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true of the new kid?
A. He was rude.
B. He liked sports.
C. He was shy.
D. He looked sad.
B 5. D 6. D 7. C
Jada sighed, slowly moved from the lockers where she had been leaning, and headed down the hall to her chemistry class. Honors Chemistry! Jada couldn’t believe that her mom was making her take the class because Jada’s counselor had said that she had real talent in science. (铃响了。Jada叹了口气,慢慢地从她一直靠着的储物柜旁走出来,沿着大厅去上化学课。荣誉化学!Jada不敢相信她妈妈让她上课,因为Jada的辅导员说她有真正的科学天赋)”和第二段“Jada had to admit that she liked science and that last year’s class was a breeze, but come on Honors Chemistry? She wouldn’t know anyone in the class, and they probably wouldn’t know anyone like her. (Jada不得不承认她喜欢科学,去年的课程轻而易举,但是,荣誉化学?她不会认识班上的任何人,他们可能也不会认识像她这样的人)”可知,Jada确实喜欢化学课,但她不想去上荣誉化学课,因为她不认识班上的同学。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段第二三句“The bad thing is that it made her seem like she was making a grand entrance. (糟糕的是,这让她看起来像是在做一个宏大的入场。更糟糕的是,课堂上只剩下两个座位在房间前面的实验室桌子上)”和第四段“Jada held her breath and walked in. Everyones eyes were on her. She just knew it. They were staring at her coal black hair (freshly dyed) , her black lipstick, her black fingernail polish, and her thrift-store black leather jacket. All she saw were polo shirts and khaki pants.
根据上文“She hated football players. They thought they were so great.”(她讨厌足球运动员。他们觉得自己很了不起)以及该词组所在的句子“That group of jocks that hung out by the cafeteria always made fun of her.”(在自助餐厅附近闲逛的That group of jocks总是取笑她)”可知,that group of jocks指代前文的“football players”。
根据第六段“The new kid made his way over to her table with his head down. He had to squeeze into the seat, and his legs wouldn’t fit under the lab table. He shot Jada a glance and turned red.(新来的孩子低着头走到她的桌子前。他不得不挤进座位上,他的腿放不进实验室的桌子下面。他瞥了Jada一眼,脸红了)”可知,新来的孩子很害羞。故选C项。

Jane Jacobs spent her working life advancing a distinct vision of the city — in particular focusing on what makes a successful urban community. At the heart of her vision is the idea that urban life should be an energetic and rich affair, whereby people are able to interact with one another in dense (稠密) and exciting urban environments. She prefers disorder to order, walking to driving, and diversity to uniformity.
For Jacobs, urban communities are organic beings that should be left to grow and change by themselves and not be subject to the grand plans of so-called experts and officials. The best judges of how a city should be — and how it should develop — are the local residents themselves. Jacobs argues that urban communities are best placed to understand how their city functions, because city life is created and sustained through their various interactions.
Jacobs notes that the built form of a city is crucial to the life of an urban community, especially the sidewalks. The streets in which people live should be a tight pattern of crossed sidewalks, which allow people to meet, talk, and get to know one another. Such a complex but ultimately enriching set of encounters helps individuals know their neighbours and neighbourhood better.
Diversity and mixed-use of space are also, for Jacobs, key elements of this urban form. The commercial, business, and residential elements of a city should not be separated out but instead be side by side, to allow for greater integration of people. There should also be a diversity of old and new buildings, and people's interactions should determine how buildings get used and reused.
Finally, urban communities grow better in places where a critical mass of people live, work, and interact. Such high-density spaces are, she feels, engines of creativity and vitality. They are also safe places to be, because the higher density means that there are more “eyes on the street”: shopkeepers and locals who know their area and maintain a close watch over the neighbourhood.
8. What does Jacobs find most important for a successful urban community?
A. Efficient public transport. B. Strong interaction between people.
C. Uniform style of buildings. D. A comparatively large population.
9. Who does Jacobs think should make decisions on urban development?
A. Local residents. B. Government officials.
C. City planners. D. Construction workers.
10. How does Jacobs suggest sidewalks be built?
A. Lined with plants. B. Painted with clear signs.
C. Tightly connected. D. Convenient for the old.
11. According to Jacobs, the “eyes on the street” bring a sense of _______.
A. pride B. comfort C. security D. urgency
B 9. A 10. C 11. C
根据文章第一段“At the heart of her vision is the idea that urban life should be an energetic and rich affair, whereby people are able to interact with one another in dense (稠密) and exciting urban environments. (她构想的核心在于,城市生活应当充满活力且丰富多彩,人们能够在密集且令人兴奋的城市环境中相互交流。)”可知,Jacobs认为对于一个成功的城市社区来说,人与人之间的强烈互动是最重要的。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“For Jacobs (对于Jacobs来说)”以及“The best judges of how a city should be — and how it should develop — are the local residents themselves. (一个城市应该如何发展,最好的评判者是当地居民自己。)”可知,Jacobs认为对城市发展做出决定的应该是当地居民。故选A项。
根据文章第三段“The streets in which people live should be a tight pattern of crossed sidewalks, which allow people to meet, talk, and get to know one another. Such a complex but ultimately enriching set of encounters helps individuals know their neighbours and neighbourhood better. (人们居住的街道应当是纵横交错的人行道构成的紧密格局,这样人们才能相遇、交谈并相互了解。这样一系列复杂但最终丰富了个人经历的相遇,有助于人们更好地了解自己的邻居和社区。)”可知,Jacobs建议如何修建连接紧密的人行道。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“They are also safe places to be, because the higher density means that there are more “eyes on the street”: shopkeepers and locals who know their area and maintain a close watch over the neighbourhood. (它们也是安全的地方,因为人口密度高意味着有更多“街头的眼睛”:店主和当地人熟悉自己的区域,并密切留意着社区的情况。)”可知,Jacobs认为,“街头的眼睛”给人带来一种安全的感觉。故选C项。

Art can be found almost everywhere on Earth. There are statues on mountaintops, sculptures under the sea, and art shows held in the middle of deserts. A group of over 30,000 artists has recently come together to place their works in a completely new location — the Moon. The project, named the Lunar Codex (月球密典), is dividing pieces they have gathered into five collections. The first one, the Orion (猎户座) Collection, was already sent into space to move around the Moon in 2022 on NASA's Orion spacecraft. The other four will be flown to different destinations on the Moon in future landing tasks.
The Lunar Codex was founded by Canadian physicist, artist, and big businessman Samuel Peralta. Growing up with a love for both writing poetry and learning about space, Peralta dreamed of sending his poems to the Moon one day. Upon discovering that some lunar landing tasks were selling spare goods space on the ships, he booked places on five tasks. While the primary goals of these tasks are to transport lunar landers for scientific experiments, private organizations have been given the opportunity to buy any spare goods space for various purposes.
The artwork included in the Lunar Codex stands for different kinds of artists and artistic forms. The collections at present have works from over 162 different countries. These include works from painters, photographers, writers, filmmakers, and more. The size of each piece of artwork will be miniaturized onto special plates that can be read with a microscope, a tool used in scientific study for making things look larger. Content such as music and movies will be saved on digital cards instead.
While the idea of humanity colonizing (殖民于) the Moon was long just thought of as science fiction, countries worldwide are now seriously considering this possibility. Samuel Peralta hopes that the Lunar Codex can be the start of art and culture and later even humanity colonization on the Moon.
12. How did Samuel Peralta realize his dream?
A. By writing a book of poems about space.
B. By founding a space transportation company.
C. By travelling through NASA’s Orion spacecraft.
D. By buying spare goods space on lunar landing tasks.
13. What does the underlined word “miniaturized” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Reduced. B. Simplified. C. Copied. D. Enlarged.
14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Colonizing the moon is just a human imagination at present.
B. The idea of colonizing the moon has been a popular scientific theory.
C. The Moon is always considered an ideal location for human colonization.
D. The Lunar Codex may be the beginning of humanity colonizing the moon.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. The Task of NASA B. Art on the Moon
C. An Art and Space Lover D. The Moon Colonization
D 13. A 14. D 15. B

根据第二段中“Growing up with a love for both writing poetry and learning about space, Peralta dreamed of sending his poems to the Moon one day. Upon discovering that some lunar landing tasks were selling spare goods space on the ships, he booked places on five tasks.(Peralta从小就喜欢写诗,也喜欢学习太空知识,他梦想有一天能把自己的诗送上月球。在发现一些登月任务正在出售船上的备用货物空间后,他预订了五个任务的位置)”可知,Samuel Peralta通过购买登月任务的备用货物空间来把自己的诗送上月球,实现自己的梦想。故选D。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后的“onto special plates that can be read with a microscope, a tool used in scientific study for making things look larger(可以用显微镜阅读的特殊板上,显微镜是一种用于科学研究的工具,可以使物体看起来更大)”可知,此处指每件艺术品的大小将被缩小,可以用显微镜观察到。 故选A。
根据最后一段中“Samuel Peralta hopes that the Lunar Codex can be the start of art and culture and later even humanity colonization on the Moon.(Samuel Peralta希望Lunar Codex可以成为艺术和文化的开端,甚至是人类在月球上殖民的开端)”可知,Lunar Codex可能是人类殖民月球的开端。
根据全文内容,结合第一段中“A group of over 30,000 artists has recently come together to place their works in a completely new location — the Moon. The project, named the Lunar Codex (月球密典), is dividing pieces they have gathered into five collections. (最近,一个由3万多名艺术家组成的团体聚集在一起,将他们的作品放置在一个全新的地方——月球。这个名为“月球法典”的项目将他们收集到的作品分成五个部分)”可知,文章主要讲述了由加拿大物理学家、艺术家和大商人Samuel Peralta发起的一项叫月球密典的计划,将艺术作品送往月球存档。由此可知,B项“月球上的艺术”适合作本文最佳标题。故选B。

A. pride B. comfort C. security D. urgency
