Class begins. Good morning boys and girls. Sit down please!
Before we jump into this class, let’s welcome to all these teachers!
Well, class, in unit3 we have talked about sports and fitness. Do you think that sports are very important for our fitness? Of course. That’s what we are going to talking about later. In this class, we are going to read and write a Wellness Book. Have you heard about the wellness book? No, we are not familiar with it.
Ok, let me simply explain it for you guys.
The Wellness Book: The comprehensive guide to maintaining Health and Treating Stress-Related Illness. I mean people exchange ideas about health and fitness with others in this book.
Now guys, please read the first sentence on page42, and try to find out the definition of the wellness book.
Who can tell me what is the wellness book?
Yes, a wellness book is a book in which a group of people exchange ideas about health and fitness.
So class, can you guess what does wellness mean? Wellness regfers to health and fitness. When we talked about wellness, we not only means the health of our body, but also our mind and spirit. Are we clear? Great!
Now let’s look at the picture in the book. Here is a girl named Kayla. And what is she doing? She is doing sport. Exactly, she is doing pushups. This passage is writen by her Kayla. She is a high school student. And please look at the title”GOING POSITIVE”. from the title,we definetly can know something about it. Let’s see: Going is becoming, becoming also means changing. If we can see that Kayla is becoming positive, then maybe we can infer that in the past she was not very positive. You know the word “negative”. This text is mainly about Kayla is changing from negativity to positivity. So do you want to know what was Kayla’s problem in the past? And how she changes from negativity to positivity?
Let’s move on to our reading.
I want you to read this passage quickly and try to find out the answers to these questions.
1. What was Kayla’s problem?
2. What changed her mind?
3. What is the result of her changes?
Read quickly, you don’t have to read the text sentence by sentence. Just find the key sentences.
Time is up, who would like to share the ideas with us? What was Kayla’s problem?
So when Kayla describes her changes, first, she explains something about her problem. And also after explaining her changes, she tells somethings about her result. That is you how explain changes. The structure of the text about the changing.
Oh guys, pay attention to these words, “always, then, finally” from these words we can say that this passage is organized in the order of time.
Ok, let’s move back to Kayla’s story. When Kayla wanted to lose her weight, what did she do? And what’s the result?
1. How did Kayala lose her weight?
2. What was the result?
Would you please read the passage as fast as you can, and tell me the answers?
Any volunteers to share your ideas?
Tried every diet, no-fat, low-fat, 5:2, only bananas, no bananas.
Have you heard about these diet before? (给学生看图片)
Do you have any questions about these diet? 5:2 what does that mean? Make a guess and you can discuss it with your partner.
Let me give you a hint, we have seven days in one week. so eat five days, and eat nothing in the rest of two days.(给学生展示出来5:2 eat normally for 5 days a week, eat little or nothing on the other 2 days是什么意思)would you try that? I wouldn’t try it. It soulds terrible. Imagine that Kayla had tried all these diet, what would happen to her? (She would be weak, unhealthy and even sick.) let’ s see, here comes the result----I almost went bananas, too. What does that mean? 饥饿的人容易生气
Bananas adj.
go bananas: to go crazy or silly; to become angry.
But luckly, an article changes her thinking. After she read this article, what happened to her? What changes did she make? Would you please read para2 and para3 and try to sort out all the changes about Kayla. (导学案)
The past:am i slim? I want to lose 3 kilos. ...
The present: am i fit? I want to run 2km8min ...
Changes:
Have you finished? Let’s share your ideas. I need two students to write down the answes here. You are the past Kayla, and you are the present Kayla, read them out one sentence by sentence please. ( hi class, think about that if you want to describe your changes, you should describe the past as well as the present, or you can describe the present as well as the future.)
Well, when Kayla describes her changes, she use some words and expressions to show similarities and differences. Would you try to find these useful expressions out. Just cicle them in the text. You can discuss with your partners.
Similarities: look like, still
Differences: instead of, rather than, but, instead
We can use look like to show similary, and use instead of, rather than, but to show the diffiences. Class, learn to use them in your writing. And i would like you guys to read these sentences out loudly.
1. I always wanted to look like the slim girls on TV...
2. ...instead of asking “Am I fat?” I should be asking “am I fit?”
3. I started thinking about fitness rather than weight...
4. Rather than cutting out the foods I enjoyed, I added heatlthy foods to my meals.
5. Instead, I made a list of the things I liked about myself.
Great, that’s the story about Kayla. After reading i think you are clear about the structure of the text as well as the language she used in the writing.
I have the qusetion for you: when Kayla describe her changes, can thinking changes one’s behaviors?
writing:group work
There are four students’ problems, can you read for us?
A: Jogging is too boring. I want to give up.
B: There’s too much work in high school. I have no time to play. I’m under stress.
C: I am afraid of doing English class report. I’m not confident.
D: The mid-term exam is coming. I stay up late these days.
Thank you. Well for the students’ problems, will you be helpful to solve the problems for them? Choose one student and discuss positive solutions. And write down2-3 sentences using expresions to show similarities and differences. Because we don’t have enough time to go through all these problems together. So I would like to let Group 1 help the studentA. Group2 help the student B. Group3 help the student C. And the last Group help the student D. Are we clear? OK, Discuss it with your partners.
OK, everyone, I want to hear your ideas. What do you gonna help these students. Who would like to help studentA? What about student B? The group3 shares your ideas? What’s your suggestion for student C? The last student is nervous about the coming examination? The group 4 can you help him? Thank you class for all your good solutions. I believe that that would be helpful for these students. I have a sentence for you guys. “Helping others is helping oneself.” If you are unhappy, my suggestion for you is that help others, and then you will be happy again. Believe or not, that is the truth.
What’s your problem? And how would you solve it? What will be the result of your solutions? Think about it. And write down some key words on your work book to prepare your writing. OK, I see most of you have finished. This is the first step when we do writing. First of all, we should make outline about our writing.
Before we start the writing, would you like to hear my story? Let’s see.
That’s my story. So class, when I tell my story, I state the problem at first which used two sentences here. Then I describe my changes. And at last, I state the result. That’s the content towards the structure of writing. And I want you to use some words and phrases of time to link the sentences and paragraphs. When you describe the changes, you should also use some expresions to show the simarlities and differences. We have learned that in this class. Now is your turn. Please write a short passage to describe your problem, your changes and your result. Your should use these 3 points as well as the languages we have just learned. Now the time is yours. I would be here with you. If you have any questions, I will be right there. Let’s do it.
Let’s check this student’s writing together.
Would you please check your writing with your deskmate accroding to the checklist below.
Sorry to interrupt. we don’t have enough time for you guys to finish this part. Here is your homework.

I used to be shy and afraid to speak loudly in class or in public. I knew I was lack of confidence and I decided to change.
Once I would keep quiet rather than speak out my thoughts. Now, I force myself to say something, to make friends with strangers. Instead of lowing my head, I would smile confidently and make eye contact with others.
Now I stop being a shy and quiet girl who nobody would notice. Instead, I become more confident and happier than before.
