After taking an introductory course in global health last winter,Yashaswi Bista, president of
Stanford SupplyHer,was empowered to take action against malaria-a disease that has been claiming
hundreds of thousands of lives every year for centuries.
Stanford SupplyHer,a student group supporting women's health through art, hosted an event in
partnership with United to Beat Malaria(UBM)to encourage funding for malaria prevention, treatment
and research initiatives while tabling at White Plaza last Monday."Knowing that malaria is especially
dangerous to pregnant individuals and children makes advocacy for malaria funding and research
essential for our mission,"said Bista.
"We in the U.S.need to be aware of the impact of global warming on malaria because less developed
countries in other parts of the world are more heavily affected by our emissions,"Bista said.Last year,
the U.S.experienced its first local outbreaks of malaria since 2003.Infectious disease experts have
warned that climate change will spread malaria and other diseases carried by mosquitoes to areas that
were once free of malaria.
This summer, after discovering the work of UBM,a global grassroots campaign of the UN
Foundation,Bista met with her congressional (representatives to advocate for malaria treatment
and research. To support continued funding for global malaria programs,Bista wrote to officials in
Congress."It's easy for people to feel like they are powerless with issues as big as malaria. But any person
can give input to their decision makers on issues as big as these,"wrote Maegan Cross,a senior advocate
at UBM."By sending messages to your elected officials in support of global health funding, you are
making sure your voice is heard."
Bista encouraged students to become involved in initiatives on campus to spread awareness of
malaria and other global health issues."Global health is important to me because there are so many health
inequities (around the world and health itself is important to live a fulfilling life,"Bista said.
"Because there are so many health inequities around the world,I want to raise awareness and help people
live fulfilling lives."

Researchers at the Beijing Academy ofAgrioulture and Forestry Seiences are on the frontline of
postharvest technology, dedicated to preserving the freshness and nutritional value of vegetables while
reducing waste.Their work extends beyond shelf life alone, focusing also on maintaining the quality
of produce.
One key focus is rapid precooling,a critical step in preserving freshness. This involves lowering
the temperatures of freshly harvested vegetables to the ideal levels for long-term storage."It's like
enveloping them in invisible freshness'armor',"said Wang Qing,a researcher at the academy.
However, achieving effective precooling involves its challenges.Different vegetables and
varying levels of ripeness require temperature controls. To address this issue, the researchers created
advanced experimental platforms in their lab, carefully recording changes under various conditions to
identify the ideal temperature range for each produce type. After months of research, they developed
new methods like controlling air cooling speed and humidity, using flowing-ice in layered containers,
and using tiny ozone particles(臭氧分子)for cleaning bacteria.Beyond the technology,we've
developed a range of precooling equipment suited to various vegetables,"said Zhao Xiaoyan,an
official at the academy. These new methods have made precooling much more effective, doubling or
even quadrupling the shelf life of vegetables sent to cities.
Discoloration also poses significant challenges for vegetable preservation."Discoloration
during storage often results in entire shipments being rejected, causing financial losses for farmers and
businesses alike,"said Wang Dan,a member of the team.Starting with white radishes ()creating
and analyzing the vegetable's blue discoloration process in laboratory and real-world conditions, the
team identified a plant compound (that produce the unwanted blue color and discovered that
5
controlling gas composition within packaging could effectively prevent discoloration.Researchers
then expanded their research to other vegetables, identifying the main processes that cause color.
Over the past two years, the team's innovations have been applied in 75 cities, including Beijing.
Shanghai and Shenzhen. The researchers'specialized preservation technologies and devices have
revolutionized the vegetable supply chain, generating additional sales and increasing profits for
related industries.
28.What does the underlined word"armor"in paragraph 2 most likely mean?
A.A precooling system
B.A storage method.
C.A temperature controller.
D.A protective covering.
29,What innovation did researchers aehieve in precooling?
A.Using ozone particles to replace cleaning processes.
B.Improving air cooling efficiency and humidity level.
C.Developing tailored equipment and diverse methods.
D.Creating standardized temperature for each produce type.
30.What is the key to tackling discoloration'?
A.Recreating discoloration process.
B.Adjusting gas inside the sealed pack
C.Identifying plant compounds causing blue.
D.Testing white radishes under real conditions
31.What's the purpose of the text?
A.To explain major challenges in vegetable storage.
B.To introduce breakthroughs in vegetable freshness.
C To share researchers'opinions in vegetable preservation.
D.To highlight the value of Chinese postharvest technology.

Languages represent far more than mere communication tools;they are complex carriers of cultural
memory,showing unique viewpoints,cultural traditions,and collective wisdom.Language loss occurs
when the final native speakers disappear, transforming vivid linguistic (traditions into
historical artifacts. The loss of a language is not merely a loss of words but a deep loss of human heritage
()disconnecting communities from their ancestral roots and their unique worldview. While
language extinction is not a new phenomenon, languages are disappearing at the fastest rate in recorded
history, with one language lost every three to four months.
Artificial intelligence (AD)has introduced innovative methods for preserving and refreshing
6
endangered languages, offering tools that were unimaginable in traditional linguistic research.
Automated Transcription Tools can change spoken language into written text, while Large Language
Models (LLMs)are trained on extensive datasets to perform translations across a wide range of
languages.
While AI offers promising solutions,it faces a significant challenge which blocks its full potential.
The vast majority of these endangered languages are underrepresented digitally. If one language doesn't
have a lot of text online,it will be less represented in those technologies. This digital divide is further
worsened by the dominance of a few languages on the Internet.Consequently, endangered languages
are often excluded from AI technologies, leaving their speakers pushed aside in the digital space.
Tech companies, linguists and local communities are all vital in ensuring that AI tools are culturally
relevant and technically effective, which can lead to the developments that meet the unique needs of
each language community.By involving native speakers in the design and use of AI technologies, create
resources that reflect the true essence of the language and encourage a sense of ownership among
community members. This shared approach is essential for building trust and ensuring the long-term
sustainability of language preservation efforts.
32.Why are the roles of languages talked about in paragraph 1?
A.To call for global language unity.
B.To draw attention to lost languages.
C.To show the effect of language loss.
D.To prove the uniqueness of languages.
33.What major difficulty does AI face in handling endangered languages?
A.Their limited speakers.
B.Their poor digital data.
C.The dominant languages.
D.The backward technologies.
34.What does the author urge people to do in the end?
A.Prioritize communities over experts.
B.Meet common needs of communities
C.Create technically effective Al models.
D.Make joint efforts at specific solutions.
35.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Save Dying Languages Through Teehnology
B.Bridge the Digital Language Gap with AI Tools
O AI in Teaching People Endangered Languages
D.Fruitful Smart Projects in Language Proteetion

为多余选项。
I am a child of traditional book reading.I used to go through one book continuously from beginning
to end, taking notes or highlighting lines before going on to the next book.It was a slow but deeper way
to absorb a book.36 My struggle with Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov early on is a good
example.
After college,my job involved reading a lot of background materials for projects. Many nights I
stayed awake till past midnight leafing through pages.37It helped me breeze through my
reading requirements. However, for books I was genuinely passionate about,I switched to a slower pace,
and still read one book at a time.
38 I no longer stick to one book, but jump between them, spending about half an hour on
each.Currently,I'm reading six books in various stages, with more lined up to start soon.My speed
reading skills help me scan quickly without losing comprehension.I can easily switch to slow reading
mode whenever needed.
Recently,I learnt from a journal that my previous reading method is known as."Blocked Practice",
which involves studying one topic thoroughly before moving on to another.39 However,it tends
to restrict how you apply knowledge in new and varied situations.
On the other hand, the"mixing it up"approach, also referred to as "Interleaved Practice",could
produce dramatic,long-lasting learning benefits.By switching between topics, readers can make
connections between ideas and skills._40 Over time, readers could be more capable of solving
problems critically. If this is true, then my evolution as a reader of books has been in the right direction
all along.
A.It helps widen perspectives.
B.This method has its limitations.
C.That was when I took up speed reading.
D.I'm not great at trying out different reading styles
E.That's why it took me months to finish heavy books
F.Nowadays I've acquired the habit of multiple book reading.
G This approach can be effective for mastering individual concepts.
