Wimbledon High School carried out the Phone Away Box system over the summer holidays. Students arriving in September were now expected to place their phones in clear boxes on their lockers before morning registration, where they must remain till the bell rings at 4 p.m. It is the first school in the UK to use a system of this type.
Ben Turner, headmaster of Wimbledon High School, said, “School life doesn’t end at the end of the school day any more, as it did during our childhoods. There is loads of evidence of the influence of phones on mental health. Children go home and continue to communicate with their school friends into the small hours. We felt like we needed to help our students make decisions that are right for them. We have talked a lot about the Phone Away Box with our students and their parents.”
“The Phone Away boxes are for our year 7’s and 8’s and are housed in their locker room. It shows our policy of zero tolerance (容忍). It makes it very clear from the moment you come into school what our belief about phones should be. The school day is for normal socialisation, education, time in the classroom and time in clubs. It’s not for whatever’s on my phone. That is not important.”
Turner added how the new Phone Away Box system is part of a wider policy of excluding (把……排除在外) phones from school. He said, “Our policy also goes beyond that. Our students also went away on trips for three days in the summer for mountaineering and rock climbing and during that time they were not allowed to bring their mobile phones with them.” These measures (措施) are hugely popular with them and their parents. They express their thanks and have words of praise. It’s clear that you don’t need phones to get the best education.
28. What were the new students of Wimbledon High School asked to do?
A. Put phones in a fixed place at school. B. Keep their lockers closed until 4 p.m.
C. Avoid bringing their phones to school. D. Register with a teacher in the morning.
29. What was Ben Turner’s purpose of saying that in paragraph 2?

An adult African elephant consumes about 223 liters of water and 300 pounds of roots, grass and fruit daily. That’s like having 634 cans of soda and 1,200 hamburgers every day. This keeps elephants moving thousands of miles across Africa each year. Elephants usually migrate at the beginning of the dry season, between June and November. Females live in groups with their children, and quickly run out of the food supply. They hit the road in search of food. Male elephants live alone, so they don’t use resources as quickly as the females. Instead, they migrate during the mating (交配) season. When the females move, so do the males.
During migration, elephants face a shortage of water and extremely high temperatures. But people are their number one problem. Poachers (偷猎者) kill about 35,000 elephants each year for ivory. Many African farmers build fences to protect crops and cattle, which might block regular migration paths. Roads affect elephant migration, too. During one study of 28 elephants in Central Africa, only one female crossed an unprotected road.
Scientists, wildlife organisations and governments find solutions for Africa’s elephants. “To know the secret of where elephants move and how they move, we place collars with a satellite unit inside, Dr. Michael Chase says. GPS collars help map which routes elephants use most so that countries can establish protected elephant passages.
Locals come in as well. James Isiche, East Africa Director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare says, “We have got the community on our side by a project; they’ve agreed to partner with us to conserve elephants.” The local community run wildlife parks to attract tourists. “This project helps us take care of both the wildlife and our cows,” says Sikira, a tribal elder in Maasai, Kenya. Protecting elephant migration routes allows these gentle giants to survive.
32. What can we learn about the elephants from paragraph 1?
A. They migrate for different reasons. B. They move south to survive the cold.
C. They show an interest in hamburgers. D. Females have a short life for food shortages.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Results of poaching. B. Difficulties in migrating.
C. Reasons for killing elephants. D. Efforts to protect migration paths.
34. Why are collars applied by scientists?
A. To protect elephants in time. B. To track elephants with technology
C. To know the population of elephants. D. To explore a new migration route.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Say No to Ivory B. A Journey Across Africa
C. Ready for Migration D. Technology in Migration

根据第一段“Females live in groups with their children, and quickly run out of the food supply. They hit the road in search of food. Male elephants live alone, so they don’t use resources as quickly as the females. Instead, they migrate during the mating (交配) season.(雌性大象与幼崽一起群居生活,但很快就会耗尽食物供应。于是它们便踏上寻觅食物的旅程。雄性大象则独自生活,因此它们不像雌性那样迅速消耗资源。相反,在交配季节,它们会进行迁徙)”可知,大象迁徙的原因各不相同。故选A。
根据第二段“During migration, elephants face a shortage of water and extremely high temperatures. But people are their number one problem. Poachers (偷猎者) kill about 35,000 elephants each year for ivory6Many African farmers build fences to protect crops and cattle, which might block regular migration paths. Roads affect elephant migration, too. During one study of 28 elephants in Central Africa, only one female crossed an unprotected road.(在迁徙过程中,大象会面临水资源短缺和极端高温的问题。但人类才是它们面临的最大威胁。偷猎者每年会捕杀约35000头大象以获取象牙。许多非洲农民为保护庄稼和牛群而修建围栏,这可能会阻断大象的常规迁徙路线。道路也会影响大象的迁徙。在对中非地区28头大象的一项研究中,只有1头雌性大象成功穿越了一条未设防护的公路)”可知,这一段主要是关于大象迁徙过程中遇到的困难。故选B。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段““To know the secret of where elephants move and how they move, we place collars with a satellite unit inside, Dr. Michael Chase says.(“为了了解大象的行踪规律以及它们的移动方式,我们会在它们的项圈里安装带有卫星装置的设备,”迈克尔·查斯博士说道)”可知,科学家使用项圈是为了用技术追踪大象。故选B。

上文“The first step in choosing courses is to take a look at your strengths and interests. What courses are you better at?(选择课程的第一步是审视自己的优势和兴趣。你擅长哪些课程?)”说明选择课程首先要考虑自己的优势和兴趣,空处和前文为顺接关系,应进一步询问被什么科目吸引,所以E项“你发现自己自然被什么科目吸引?”符合语境。该项中的subjects与前文courses相呼应,且“naturally attracted to”紧扣“interests”。故选E。
【37题详解】
上文“Think about what jobs you are interested in in the future.(想想你将来对什么工作感兴趣)”说明要考虑未来的职业兴趣,这是选择课程的一个重要出发点。下文“For instance, if you want to become a doctor, you might want to take biology and chemistry courses.(例如,如果你想成为一名医生,你可能需要学习生物学和化学课程)”举例说明需要根据工作喜好选择课程,空处承上启下,说明根据工作偏好来选择课程,所以D项“你可以根据自己的工作偏好选择课程。”
上文“School advisers are your valuable source when it comes to choosing courses. They can help you find your interests, strengths, and career goals. They also recommend courses that are suitable for you.(在选择课程方面,学校顾问是你宝贵的资源。他们可以帮助你找到自己的兴趣、优势和职业目标。他们还会推荐适合你的课程)”说明学校顾问在选择课程方面有很大帮助,空处和前文为顺接关系,应总结学校顾问的作用,即他们能帮你找到特别适合你的课程,所以F项“总之,他们帮你找到最适合你的课程”符合语境,该项中的they指代前文“School advisers”。故选F。

Will the courses conflict with each other?(选择课程时,考虑你的时间表很重要。
上文“Before choosing a course, take some time to research the subject matter. Look for reviews and feedback from present and former students.(在选择课程之前,花点时间研究一下课程内容。看看现在和以前学生的评价和反馈)”说明选择课程前要研究课程内容并查看评价和反馈,空处和前文为顺接关系,应说明这些评价和反馈的作用,所以G项“它们可以帮助你了解课程的内容和难度”符合语境,该项中的“They”指代前文“reviews and feedback”,“get a sense of the course’s content and difficulty level”是对“research the subject matter”的具体阐释。故选G。
