College is a big deal for American students as well as for Chinese students. During the college application, some parents become extremely worried. This only adds to the pressure.
Before I applied to the colleges, I told my parents I would get everything straightened out. If I needed any help, I promised that I would ask them.
As it turned out, I had no problem putting everything together on my own, including my resume and a basic outline of my activities in high school. The only part where I asked my parents for advice was the essays. In writing and revising the essays, I needed feedback from an audience. As my parents know me better than anyone, they were perfect for the job.
The essays are extremely important in college admissions. In a competitive pool of applicants, the test scores and activities, as well as the recommendations are all going to be very similar. The essays are the one area in which students can make themselves stand out. Essays don’t have to be big and complicated. I wrote three essays, mainly focusing on small matters and using simple sentences. The admissions officers have to read hundreds of essays a day; they are already tired of SAT vocabularies and long sentences. Therefore, a straightforward writing style is refreshing to their eyes as well as their minds. Essays were the key to my success in the admissions game. I just wrote about what I wanted to say, not what I thought the admissions officers would like to hear.
In my main narrative-style essay, I told the story of my American journey at the age of 14. During that time, I was not bogged down (陷入) by trying to fit into a new environment; instead, I looked up to Mother Teresa for guidance and strength. I found my new self and grew to love the name Teresa and the memories it held.
In my two minor essays, I explained the major events of my life, why I loved writing and why my dad is the person who has the greatest influence on me. Both provided details of my character. The essay about writing, which is titled “I Shall Not Live in Vain” (inspired by an Emily Dickinson poem), earned a lot of praise. It is because I really looked into my heart and thought deeply in order to reach my answers. Looking back upon those days, I really appreciate what I have done to help me finally make it.
41. I asked my parents for advice about my essays because ________.
A. they are more experienced B. they know me perfectly well
C. they are the only people I can rely on D. they are extremely worried about my application
42. In order to impress the admissions officers, the applicants should write their essays ________.
A. with a big vocabulary B. with simple sentences
C. about small matters D. in a straightforward style
43. What helped the writer gain admissions to his or her university of choice?
A. High scores. B. Good recommendations. C. Good essays. D. Interesting stories.
44. According to the passage, ________ has the greatest influence on the writer.
A. Mother Teresa B. his or her father C. Emily Dickinson D. admissions officers
45. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. the writer’s experience in college admissions B. the importance of college education for students
C. how parents’ worries add to students’ pressure D. the importance of essays in college admissions

Hundreds of people die at sea every year due to ship and airplane accidents. Emergency teams have little time to rescue those in the water because the probability of finding a person alive falls dramatically after six hours. Beyond tides and challenging weather conditions, unsteady coastal currents often make search and rescue operations extremely difficult.
New insight into coastal flows gained by an international research team led by Geroge Haller, Professor of Nonlinear Dynamics at ETH Zurich, promises to enhance the search and rescue techniques currently in use. Using tools from dynamical systems theory and ocean data, the team has developed an algorithm to predict where objects and people floating in water will go. “Our work has a clear potential to save lives,” says Mattia Serra, the first author of a study recently published in Nature Communications.
In today’s rescue operation at sea, complicated models of ocean dynamics and weather forecasting are used to predict the path of floating objects. For fast-changing coastal waters, however, such predictions are often inaccurate due to uncertain boundaries and missing data. As a result, a search may be launched in the wrong location, causing a loss of precious time.
Haller’s research team obtained mathematical results predicting that objects floating on the ocean’s surface should gather along a few special curves (曲线) which they call Transient Attracting Profiles (TRAPs). These curves can’t be seen with our eyes but can be tracked from instant ocean surface current data using recent mathematical methods developed by the ETH team. This enables quick and precise planning of search paths that are less sensitive to uncertainties in the time and place of the accident.
In cooperation with a team from MIT, the ETH team tested their new, TRAP-based search algorithm in two separate ocean experiments near Martha’s Vineyard, which is on the northeastern coast of the United States. Working from the same real-time data available to the Coast Guard, the team successfully identified TRAPs in the region in real-time. They found that buoys and manikins (浮标和人体模型) thrown in the water indeed quickly gathered along these emerging curves. “Of several competing approaches tested in the project, this was the only algorithm that consistently found the right location,” says Haller.
“Our results are rapidly obtained, easy to interpret, and cheap to perform,” points out Serra. Haller stresses: “Our hope is that this method will become a standard part of the tool kit of coast guards everywhere.”
46. In a search and rescue operation, ________.
A. the survival rate drops to almost zero after six hours B. the use of dynamics leads to the wrong location
C. weather conditions are a determining factor D. changing currents present a challenge
47. The main significance of the new algorithm is ________.
A. accurately predicting weather conditions during rescue operations
B. dependence on satellite technology to locate distressed individuals at sea
C. cost-effective, efficient tracking of objects and individuals in coastal waters
D. predicting the exact time and location of ocean accidents
48. What is the meaning of the underlined word in paragraph 2?
A. a mathematical way of operating data B. a principle in science and technology
C. a software to locate anything floated D. an approach to rescue lives
49. Paragraph 5 mainly talks about ________.
A. the collection of data B. the testing of the algorithm
C. the identification of the TRAPs D. the cooperation of two research teams
50. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. How Mathematics Can Save Lives at Sea
B. How Coastal Waters Affect Saving Lives
C. Why Algorithms Are Popular in Rescue Operations
D. Why Success Rates of Rescue Operations Have Fallen
D
Have you ever found that those so-called classical literature is actually boring and wordy? Have you ever been employed to read such works with total reluctance and unwillingness? However, these works, when published, suddenly became a hit all around the world, and won a large number of followers. Why here exists the huge distinction between their venerable fames and your natural judgement?
The answer lies not in the works themselves, but in the mismatch between readers’ expectations and the historical context in which these texts were created. Classics reflect the language, values, and concerns of their own time, which can feel distant or irrelevant to modern readers. Long-winded descriptions, unfamiliar social customs, and archaic sentence structures can be barriers to engagement. However, labeling them as boring overlooks the lasting human truths they contain — truths that have resonated for generations.
One key reason we struggle to connect with classical literature is that these works explore deep emotions and moral dilemmas — love, guilt, ambition, loss — that resonate most when we’ve lived through similar experiences ourselves. It is difficult to appreciate Shakespeare’s meditation on mortality in Hamlet until we have lost someone we love; it is hard to understand Jane Eyre’s moral independence without having struggled with our own identity. These books don’t lack meaning — we simply haven’t grown into them yet.
Like a child who cannot fully grasp the complexities of adult life, an inexperienced reader may fail to see the emotional depth of classic literature. That’s why the same book can feel entirely different when read at different stages of life. A passage that once seemed dull may suddenly feel profound. A character’s decision that once seemed irrational may now appear deeply human. Classics don’t change — but we do. Our growth brings new insights into old texts.
More importantly, literature helps us practice empathy. By stepping into the shoes of people from different times, cultures, and social classes, we broaden our emotional perspectives. We are exposed to ways of thinking and feeling that may be unfamiliar but are essential to understanding the human experience.
So perhaps the problem is not with the books, but with how we approach them. Some books ask us to slow down, think harder, and feel deeper. That is not a flaw (缺点) — it is their strength. And as we gain more life experience, these works reveal their beauty, wisdom, and relevance. Through them, we don’t just understand literature — we come to understand others, and ultimately, ourselves.
51. What is the main reason the author suggests modern readers may struggle with classical literature?
A. Classical literature uses outdated vocabulary
B. Classical works reflect values and concerns from a different historical context
C. Modern readers lack interest in older texts
D. Classical works are too short to engage with deeply
52. According to the article, why might a young reader find Hamlet or Jane Eyre difficult to relate to?
A. They carry many special designs of plots B. They have not yet experienced similar emotions
C They have little empathetic ability D. The characters are too unrealistic
53. What is the primary purpose of literature, as described in the article?
A. To entertain readers with exciting plots B. To expose readers to different historical periods
C. To help readers practice empathy and understand others D. To teach readers about the complexities of life
54. What is the central argument of the article?
A. Classical literature is irrelevant to modern readers
B We should approach classical works with openness and patience
C. Modern literature is superior to classical literature
D. Some classical literature should be rewritten for modern readers
55. Which of the following best summarizes the article’s view on classical literature?
A. Classical literature is outdated and should be replaced by modern works
B. Modern readers should learn to read classical literature carefully
C. Classical literature is useful for academic study and personal growth
D. Classical works have their necessary values behind

I'm no literary luddite I bought an iPad with my first paycheck from my first full time job after I graduated college. But after two years of reading occasionally on the device, I gave it away to my brother. It just wasn't the right reading experience for me.
Technology lovers choose e-readers over books because e readers are more convenient. They're right. It is objectively easier to carry an 7oz. tablet with thousands and thousands of books at your fingertips than it is to carry five books in your bag (which is exactly what I did on vacation).
But I don't read for convenience. I read to learn more about the world and myself. I have made friends by seeing a book cover in a cafe and noticing that it was the same title that I was reading. I can trace my life by the books that have been my companions. When I open an old book and come across my previously scribbled notes — shaky ones when I've been reading on the subway, covered in sand if I read it at the beach, next to a train ticket if I was traveling — I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to re-read. It's just not enough to simply consuming the story, which is what e-readers are great for.
When I read paper books, I hold onto them for long periods of time. I just purchased a new bookshelf specially for my “to be read” pile. Once in a while, I go through the process of deciding which books to donate, but usually the idea of parting with a book feels like giving away a part of my soul.
Physical books may not be the most efficient medium, but they are the most meaningful. So keep your Kindle, by all means. But I'll be happy hoarding with my library.
56. Why did the author give his iPad to his brother? (no more than 10 words)
57. What is the second paragraph mainly about? (no more than 6 words)
58 Which word can take the place of the underlined word in paragraph 3? (1 word)
59. When the author has to give away some books, how does he feel about it? (no more than 15 words)
60. Do you like e-readers or physical books? Please explain your opinion. (no more than 25 words)(open)

根据第二段中的“The answer lies not in the works themselves, but in the mismatch between readers’ expectations and the historical context in which these texts were created. Classics reflect the language, values, and concerns of their own time, which can feel distant or irrelevant to modern readers. (答案不在于作品本身,而在于读者的期望与这些文本创作时的历史背景之间的不匹配。经典作品反映了它们所处时代的语言、价值观和关注点,这对现代读者来说可能会显得遥远或无关紧要)”可知,作者认为现代读者难以理解古典文学的主要原因是古典文学反映了特定时代的价值观和关注点,与现代读者的认知存在历史背景差异。故选B项。
【52题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“One key reason we struggle to connect with classical literature is that these works explore deep emotions and moral dilemmas — love, guilt, ambition, loss — that resonate most when we’ve lived through similar experiences ourselves. It is difficult to appreciate Shakespeare’s meditation on mortality in Hamlet until we have lost someone we love; it is hard to understand Jane Eyre’s moral independence without having struggled with our own identity.
根据倒数第二段中的“More importantly, literature helps us practice empathy. By stepping into the shoes of people from different times, cultures, and social classes, we broaden our emotional perspectives. (更重要的是,文学帮助我们培养共情能力。通过设身处地地站在来自不同时代、文化和社会阶层的人的角度,我们拓宽了自己的情感视野)”可知,文章认为文学的主要目的是帮助读者培养同理心,理解他人。故选C项。
【54题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,作者先指出读者觉得古典文学枯燥的现象,再分析其原因,接着强调古典文学的价值,在最后一段中提出核心观点:“So perhaps the problem is not with the books, but with how we approach them. Some books ask us to slow down, think harder, and feel deeper. That is not a flaw— it is their strength. (所以,或许问题不在于书籍本身,而在于我们对待它们的方式。有些书要求我们放慢速度、深入思考、深刻感受。这并非缺点—— 而是它们的优势所在。)”,因此,文章的中心论点是我们应该以开放和耐心的态度对待经典作品。故选B项。
【55题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“However, labeling them as boring overlooks the lasting human truths they contain — truths that have resonated for generations. (然而,将它们贴上“无聊”的标签,却忽视了其中蕴含的持久的人类真理 —— 这些真理已经引起了几代人的共鸣)”以及最后一段中的“And as we gain more life experience, these works reveal their beauty, wisdom, and relevance. (而且,随着我们积累更多的生活经验,这些作品会展现出它们的美、智慧和现实意义)”可知,文章认为古典文学并非枯燥无用,其背后蕴含着永恒的真理、美感与智慧,具有重要价值。故选D项。

2. 本卷共6小题,共35分。
第三部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5个小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
58. Which word can take the place of the underlined word in paragraph 3? (1 word)
59. When the author has to give away some books, how does he feel about it? (no more than 15 words)
60. Do you like e-readers or physical books? Please explain your opinion. (no more than 25 words)(open)
56. Because he didn't like reading on the device .
Because it couldn't give him the right reading experience .
Because reading on the device couldn't help trace his life .
Because it couldn't add personal depth and experience to stories .
57. The advantage of e-readers .
Why the technology lovers choose e-readers.
58. Reading
59. He feels that he is giving away (a) part of his soul.
He feels that he is parting with (a) part of his soul.
He feels that it is like giving away/ paring with (a) part of his soul.
60. Possible answers:
I like reading physical books, because they are like my companions and more meaningful to me.
I like reading e-readers, because they are very convenient for me to lake them anywhere.
根据第一段的“But after two years of reading occasionally on the device, I gave it away to my brother. It just wasn't the right reading experience for me.( 但经过两年偶尔在这个设备上的阅读以后,我把它交给了我哥哥。 对我来说这不是正确的阅读体验)”以及第三段的“I can trace my life by the books that have been my companions.(我可以用一直陪伴我的书来追踪我的生活。)”和“I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to re-read.( 我能够增加一个额外的个人深度和经验到我即将重新阅读的故事中。)” Because he didn't like reading on the device ./Because it couldn't give him the right reading experience ./Because reading on the device couldn't help trace his life ./Because it couldn't add personal depth and experience to stories .
根据第二段的“Technology lovers choose e-readers over books because e readers are more convenient. They're right. It is objectively easier to carry an 7oz. tablet with thousands and thousands of books at your fingertips than it is to carry five books in your bag(科技爱好者选择电子阅读器而不是书籍,因为电子阅读器更方便。他们是对的。比起把五本书装在你的包里,客观上携带7盎司重的平板电脑更容易,成千上万本书触手可得)”可知,第二段主要讲述电子阅读器的优点,爱好科技的人为什么喜欢选择电子阅读器。故答案为The advantage of e-readers ./Why the technology lovers choose e-readers.
上文“I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to re-read.( 我能够增加额外的个人深度和体验到我即将重新阅读的故事中)”可知,重读已经读过的故事,作者增加了个人的认识深度,以及体验,因此推断作者不只是简单的读这个故事,即划线词词义为“阅读”,可以用reading代替。
根据倒数第二段的“Once in a while, I go through the process of deciding which books to donate, but usually the idea of parting with a book feels like giving away a part of my soul.(偶尔,我会经历一个决定捐赠哪些书的过程,但通常与一本书分开的想法就像赠送我灵魂的一部分)”可知,当作者必须捐赠一些书籍时,他感觉就像与自己的灵魂分离。 He feels that he is giving away (a) part of his soul./He feels that he is parting with (a) part of his soul./He feels that it is like giving away/ paring with (a) part of his soul.
I like reading physical books, because they are like my companions and more meaningful to me./I like reading e-readers, because they are very convenient for me to lake them anywhere.

My Growth in Senior High
The three-year senior high school life is a crucial stage of my growth, during which I've experienced significant changes.
In terms of study and living habits, I've become more self-disciplined. In the past, I often wasted time on unimportant things. But now, I make a daily schedule, ensuring enough time for study, exercise, and rest. This change has greatly improved my learning efficiency.
My thinking quality has also enhanced. When dealing with problems, I no longer rely on others easily. Instead, I think independently, analyze the situation from different perspectives, and try to find solutions on my own. This has made me more confident in facing challenges.
Inter-personally, I've learned to be more understanding and cooperative. In group projects, I respect my classmates' opinions and work together with them harmoniously. We help each other and make progress together.
In conclusion, senior high school has witnessed my growth in many aspects, preparing me well for my future.
