B Good friends and good physical health may be even more closely linked than previously thought, new research has found. Researchers discovered that positive social experiences impact not only a person’s stress level and ability to cope, but also markers of physical health, according to a study published Monday in the journal Society for Personality and Social Psychology. The study followed more than 4,000 people over three weeks as they completed check-ins every three days on their smartphones or smartwatches regarding their positive and negative experiences with their closest social relationships, as well as assessments of their blood pressure, heart rate, stress and coping. Having more positive experiences in social relationships was generally associated with better coping, lower stress and lower blood pressure, according to the study. But having social relationships which bounce between good and bad often can be unhelpful. When there is a lot of volatility, the negative experiences seemed to have a bigger impact on a person than the positive, said lead study author Brian Don of the University of Auckland. Then, how to build good social relationships? Adam Smiley Poswolsky, a workplace belonging expert, suggests starting small. Text a friend that you haven’t talked to in a long time, meet one new person a month, host a dinner party, or join a class. “If you do just one thing, make a list of five people in your life that you care about, and give one of them a phone call,” Poswolsky added. There might not be just one definition of a good friendship, but most strong relationships share some similar qualities, he said. They tend to prioritize laughter, joy, excitement, courage, and non-judgmental support. And good friendships are often two people helping each other become better versions of themselves, he added. “You know someone is a true friend when they have your back when you’re sick, when you lose your job, when you make a mistake, when you’re stressed, when you’re sad,” Poswolsky said. 4. How was the study carried out? A By doing regular check-ins on devices. B. By following the participants for three days. C. By interviewing the closest friends of participants. D. By monitoring the health conditions of participants. 5. What does the underlined word “volatility” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Pressure. B. Association. C. Changeability. D. Certainty. 6. Which statement will Poswolsky probably agree with? A. Friendship is about being always available. B. Friendship is based on shared interests and hobbies. C. Friendship begins with tiny moments of connection. D. Friendship means always having positive interactions. 7. Where is the passage most likely to have been taken from? A. A questionnaire survey. B. A personal diary. C. A biology textbook. D. A news report. C I took a trip to visit New York with my dad after graduating from high school One of the places on his list for us to visit was a “rare violin shop”. We made our way down the crowded streets and stopped in front of a tall building. This building was not what I had pictured. I’d been imagining a street-level shop, open to the public, with some interesting and older violins on display. As we walked inside, we were greeted by a receptionist who asked if we had an appointment, since they were by appointment only. I wanted the ground to swallow me whole and decided to give up the visit. However, my dad eagerly told her, “No, we didn’t but, my daughter plays the violin with her high school orchestra. And we would love to just pop inside and browse! Don’t mind us!” The receptionist gave him an odd look but excused herself to talk to a well-dressed man, who told us that since he had no other appointments right now, he would love to give us a tour. The starting price for a violin here, we found out, was 10 thousand dollars. He showed us around a very private-feeling and swanky-looking condo (奢华的工作间) , pointing out a room where he casually mentioned he would chat with Joshua Bell when he came by. My jaw was on the floor the entire time. At the end, the man picked up a Stradivarius and asked me to play a string while he held it. And he triumphantly said, “There! Now you’ve played a Stradivarius.” I don’t remember the man’s name, but meeting him is a real stroke of luck for me and I’m grateful that he decided to show a no-appointment, non-customer visitor around. His warm behavior helped inspire me to continue pursuing my instrument after high school! 8. What kind of violin shop had the author expected to visit? A. Tall and magnificent. B. Mysterious and odd. C. Popular and fascinating. D. High-end and professional. 9. How did the author feel after being greeted by a receptionist? A. Proud. B. Embarrassed. C. Guilty. D. Depressed. 10. According to Paragraph 4, what might Joshua Bell be? A. A receptionist. B. A celebrity. C. A salesman. D. A shopkeeper. 11. What can be concluded from the passage? A. The shop overprices its customers. B. Stradivarius is a mass-market brand. C. The author enjoys her visit to the shop. D. The well-dressed man is a great violinist. D When people think about improving their physical fitness, they often neglect (忽视) balance. Good balance is a necessary part of being physically fit and key to living a long life, according to research. It’s important for everyone, no matter your age. Older adults are most affected by poor balance. Falls are the leading cause of injury and death for those 65 and older, with nearly 30% in this age group reporting at least one fall in 2018, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But younger adults frequently fall down, too. Forty-eight percent of young adults reported falling at least once during one 16-week study. The falls most commonly happened during sports activities, with women in the study reporting more falls and fall-related injuries than men. Falls within the previous two years were reported by 18% of young adults (ages 20 to 45) in another study published in the journal BMC Public Health. That figure (数据) compared with 21% of middle-aged adults (46 to 65) reporting falls and 35% of those over 65. While falls among young adults were often connected with sports, falls by the middle-aged group were typically related to health problems and physical changes. Many factors (因素) can affect your balance outside of age, such as vision changes, brain injuries, overweight and a general lack of physical fitness. Even if you have no risk factors, simply neglecting to work regularly on your balance will result in increased instability “Our body is conditioned to lose what we don’t regularly use and practice, and balance is no different,” said Susan Baxter. 12. What role does a good balance play in our lives? A. It helps us live a healthy and long life. B. It enables us to build a perfect shape. C. It protects us from getting seriously sick. D. It has the power to make us look young. 13. How does the author show the research results? A. By having a discussion. B. By following the time order. C. By raising questions. D. By giving a list of figures. 14. In which situation are young adults likely to fall down? A. When a health problem comes up. B. When working regularly. C. When a physical change appears. D. When joining in a sport. 15. What can we learn from what Susan Baxter said? A We’ll lose our balance if we don’t practise it often. B. Our body is used to working in its own way. C. We should manage our body properly. D. We are naturally born with balance. Studies have shown that physical activity can improve mental alertness and cognitive function. A. By doing regular check-ins on devices. B. By following the participants for three days. C. By interviewing the closest friends of participants. D. By monitoring the health conditions of participants. 5. What does the underlined word “volatility” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Pressure. B. Association. C. Changeability. D. Certainty. 6. Friendship begins with tiny moments of connection. D. Friendship means always having positive interactions. 7. Where is the passage most likely to have been taken from? A. A questionnaire survey. 根据第二段“The study followed more than 4,000 people over three weeks as they completed check-ins every three days on their smartphones or smartwatches regarding their positive and negative experiences with their closest social relationships, as well as assessments of their blood pressure, heart rate, stress and coping. (这项研究在三周内跟踪了4000多人,他们每三天在智能手机或智能手表上完成一次签到,了解他们与最亲密的社会关系的积极和消极经历,以及对他们的血压、心率、压力和应对能力的评估。)”可知,研究是通过参与者每三天在他们的智能手机或智能手表上完成签到来进行的,即这项研究是通过在设备上定期签到进行的。故选A。 根据第三段“But having social relationships which bounce between good and bad often can be unhelpful. When there is a lot of volatility, the negative experiences seemed to have a bigger impact on a person than the positive, said lead study author Brian Don of the University of Auckland. (但是,在好与坏之间摇摆的社会关系往往是无益的。奥克兰大学的主要研究作者布莱恩·唐说,当volatility很大时,负面经历似乎比正面经历对一个人的影响更大。)”可知,这里指有的社会关系会在好与坏之间摇摆,所以volatility的意思是“波动”,和选项C“变动性”意思一致。故选C。 【6题详解】 细节推理题。根据第四段“Then, how to build good social relationships? Text a friend that you haven’t talked to in a long time, meet one new person a month, host a dinner party, or join a class. “If you do just one thing, make a list of five people in your life that you care about, and give one of them a phone call,” Poswolsky added. (那么,如何建立良好社会关系呢?职场归属感专家Adam Smiley Poswolsky建议从小处着手。给一个你很久没说话的朋友发短信,每月认识一个新朋友,举办一个晚宴,或者参加一个班。Poswolsky补充道:“如果你只做一件事,列出你生活中关心的五个人,给其中一个人打个电话。”)”可知,Poswolsky建议从小事开始,从小的连接时刻开始。故选C。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Good friends and good physical health may be even more closely linked than previously thought, new research has found. Researchers discovered that positive social experiences impact not only a person’s stress level and ability to cope, but also markers of physical health, according to a study published Monday in the journal Society for Personality and Social Psychology. (新的研究发现,好朋友和良好的身体健康可能比以前认为的更紧密地联系在一起。周一发表在《人格与社会心理学学会》杂志上的一项研究表明,研究人员发现,积极的社会经历不仅会影响一个人的压力水平和应对能力,还会影响身体健康的标志。)”可知,这篇文章是一篇新闻报道,它介绍了一项新的研究。故选D。 C I took a trip to visit New York with my dad after graduating from high school. One of the places on his list for us to visit was a “rare violin shop”. 8. C 9. B 10. B 11. My jaw was on the floor the entire time.(他带我们参观了一套非常私密、看起来很时髦的公寓,指着一间房间,漫不经心地提到,如果Joshua Bell路过,他会和他聊天。 根据最后一段中“but meeting him is a real stroke of luck for me and I’m grateful that he decided to show a no-appointment, non-customer visitor around. His warm behavior helped inspire me to continue pursuing my instrument after high school!(但能见到他对我来说真是幸运,我很感激他决定带一个没有预约、不是顾客的参观者参观。 D When people think about improving their physical fitness, they often neglect (忽视) balance. A. We’ll lose our balance if we don’t practise it often. B. Our body is used to working in its own way. C. We should manage our body properly. D. We are naturally born with balance. A 13. D 14. D 15. 和第四段中“Falls within the previous two years were reported by 18% of young adults (ages 20 to 45) in another study published in the journal BMC Public Health. That figure (数据) compared with 21% of middle-aged adults (46 to 65) reporting falls and 35% of those over 65. 根据围绕年轻人摔倒情况的第三段中“The falls most commonly happened during sports activities (摔跤最常发生在体育活动中)”和围绕另一项研究的第四段中“While falls among young adults were often connected with sports (而年轻人的跌倒通常与运动有关)”可知,年轻人参加体育运动时容易摔倒。 根据最后一段Susan Baxter所说的话“Our body is conditioned to lose what we don’t regularly use and practice, and balance is no different (我们的身体习惯于失去我们不经常使用和练习的东西,平衡也没有什么不同)”可推知,如果我们不经常练习,我们就会失去平衡。故选A项。 Studies have shown that physical activity can improve mental alertness and cognitive function. Regular physical activity throughout the week enhances brain function when you need it most—during your study sessions — rather than isolating it to the weekend.(每天坚持锻炼,结合你的学习和课程安排,比把150分钟的体育活动塞到周末更有效。 故选A项。 It was the first time that I had traveled around Cyprus with my husband John. My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair workshop.” “Frank, no interrupting,” said Miss Clare, their teacher. “And Bradley has a fine market. I’m glad that Emily shared her experience with us. Go ahead, Emily,” Miss Clare smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue. A slight smile lifted, “Thanks.” On hearing this, Frank felt a wave of relief flooding into his heart. “I help my dad fix things all the time.
