When Param Jaggi was five years old, he had a passion to take things apart to see what was inside. He started with toys and even broke a computer, which made his parents not too pleased. As he got older, he shifted from breaking things to building things, which greatly comforted his parents. In middle school. he started working on projects in his kitchen laboratory, and his first project was making biofuels.
Although Jaggi’s parents initially thought his experiments were just. a boyhood fancy, he remained determined to make a difference to the environment. Eventually, his parents came around and started supporting his dreams. Jaggi’s interest continued as he grew up, but he focused more on solving real problems, especially those related to the environment.
At 17, Jaggi went beyond his school projects and. co-founded Ecoviate, a company that uses technology to solve everyday energy and environmental problems. He planned to transform people’s idea that going green is expensive, by making available a series of affordable products that are easy to use. Through Ecoviate, he designed products that could contribute to a greener future. One of his notable inventions was the “CO2ube”, a device that could be attached to vehicle tailpipes to reduce carbon emissions, and it’s available to many people at low prices. He also created a smartwatch that changed body heat into energy, which can be used to power up the watch as well as mobile phones.
Young Jaggi, now a third-grade college student studying engineering and economics, has become a famous eco-innovator and his company is developing promisingly. However, Jaggi’s vision to save the environment goes beyond creating products. He plans to launch an online platform through Ecoviate, which will encourage young students interested in science and technology to get actively involved in innovation and invention. Students can submit a science project online, and talk about the help that they need to make the project a reality.

Have you ever been somewhere truly free from the sounds of humankind? We become immune to the sounds of distant traffic and especially the subtle (不易觉察的) hum of planes high above in the sky, but there are few places that don’t have some form of noise pollution.
Noise pollution is noise that has surpassed surrounding noise levels and has a harmful impact on humans and animals. This type of pollution is generated by humans and is a form of environmental degradation (恶化). It can serve as a source of stress on fauna (动物群), which can have negative effects on animal welfare, and can even cause behavioral changes in birds, according to a study on the impacts of noise pollution on birds.
Noise pollution can be problematic when frequencies that are produced disrupt information transmission in animals, specifically animals that use similar frequencies to communicate. These disturbances can also lead to higher anti-predator behaviors in situations that don’t require it, as well as change species vocalization (发声), increase stress and stress related diseases, and have the potential to decrease populations.
Trees can be used against noise pollution, according to an investigation on the effects of leaves, branches, and canopies (树冠) on noise pollution. By decreasing the area in which noise is made and increasing tree presence with tree belts of at least 12 meters, trees could serve as a noise barrier in urban areas. Another study found that tree belts with a width of 30 meters could be planted on the roadside and have more than 6dB reduction of noise than a grassland would. The conclusion was that more trees, branches, and leaves could reduce noise pollution.
Regulations have also been placed in the US statewide and by local governments to reduce noise pollution. New York, for example, has a regulation that looks at occupational noise exposure; this ranges from monitoring noise to providing personal protective equipment. Many states and local governments in the US have their own regulations regarding noise pollution: however, many focus on the human impacts that noise pollution has and not the environmental impacts.
8. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 1?
A. Noise pollution widely exists. B. Humans aren’t impacted by noise.
C. It is hard for humans to hear plane noises. D. Lots of places are free from noise pollution.
9. What impact does noise pollution have on animals?
A. It can relieve them from stress in life. B. It can cause much trouble to their hearing.
C. It can cause them to behave abnormally. D. It can prevent them from making any sound.
10. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us about?
A. Trees can be used to reduce noise pollution.
B. A study carried out by scientists on noise pollution.
C. The function of leaves, tree branches and canopies.
D. The differences between tree belts and grassland.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The US has spared great efforts to deal with pollution.
B. Different states share the same regulations on in the US.
C All government levels take pollution seriously in the US.
D. Noise pollution has drawn great attention in the States.
D
What would happen to you if you fell into a black hole? Some physicists believe you would burn up the moment you entered one. Einstein’s general theory of relativity predicts that you would pass through, unaware that you were lost to the rest of the universe.
Black holes have a bottom, but you wouldn’t live to see it. Gravity, as you fell, would grow stronger. The pull on your feet, if you were falling feet first, would be so much greater than the pull on your head that you would be stretched until you were torn apart. But pieces of you would reach the bottom. From there, some physicists believe that those pieces that once were you could end up in another universe.
However, nobody has ever seen or will see a black hole. A black hole is invisible, a blank spot in space, but scientists are able to know its existence by the effect it has on things around it. For example, if an object comes close to a black hole, it should be possible to see the powerful gravity of the black hole trying to pull the object in. In fact, this is exactly what scientists are planning to do: to observe one while it eats a very large object.
The black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy is peaceful but is currently pulling a gas cloud toward itself fast. As the gas cloud begins to enter the black hole, telescopes will be able to take a picture of a black hole in action. This will be the best proof so far that black holes certainly exist.
A black hole is an eater. The nearer objects get to it, the hotter they become. Black holes also spin (旋转), and the extreme heat and spinning break up and expel large amounts of matter at extremely high temperatures. This heated matter flies through space, away from the hole at unbelievable speed. It can travel millions of light-years straight through a galaxy. The material then cools, comes together, and eventually forms new stars around the galaxy, thus the birth of new universes.
12. According to paragraph 2, what is the consequence of falling into a black hole?
A. Being reduced to pieces. B. Being stretched into a single piece.
C. Being burned in another universe. D. Being pulled to the bottom instantly.
13. Why does the author use the example in paragraph 3?
A. To prove that no one can see a black hole.
B. To show that black holes can in fact be detected.
C. To observe while a black hole eats a huge object.
D To see the powerful gravity a black hole possesses.
14. What’s the meaning of the underlined word in the last paragraph?
A. Set up. B. Take in. C. Throw off. D. Call for.
15. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. What a black hole is and its various aspects.
B. Why a black hole is invisible and its final discovery.
C. How a black hole is formed and its unknown mysteries.
D. When a black hole bears a universe and its amazing origin.

It was a pleasant New Year’s morning. Edward rose, washed and dressed himself in a hurry, because he wanted to be the first to wish everybody a happy New Year.
He looked in every room and shouted out the words of welcome. He ran into the street to repeat them to those he might meet. The festive atmosphere swept up the neighborhood.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright new silver dollars. His face lit up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
It was freezing and dry outside and the wind blew strongly. However, Edward left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books.
As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother and three children trembling with cold. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, a she was cheerfully passing by. The man shook his head, saying nothing. “I wish you a happy New Year,” repeated Edward, feeling a little puzzled. The man shook his head again, for he couldn’t understand or speak the language. “You do not belong to this country, do you?” asked Edward. Still the man said nothing, but this time he pointed to his mouth and to his children, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.” Edward quickly understood that these people were in trouble. The family were in great need of help. At that moment, he took out his dollars, looked at them over and over, thinking for a short while and finally gave one to the man and the other to his wife.
How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which meant, “We thank you a thousand times and will remember you in our prayers.”
Without a word, Edward made his way home, delighted.

C. All government levels take pollution seriously in the US.
D. Noise pollution has drawn great attention in the States.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. A 11.

13 Why does the author use the example in paragraph 3?
A. To prove that no one can see a black hole.
B. To show that black holes can in fact be detected.
C. To observe while a black hole eats a huge object.
D. To see the powerful gravity a black hole possesses.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. A
【解析】

The pull on your feet, if you were falling feet first, would be so much greater than the pull on your head that you would be stretched until you were torn apart. But pieces of you would reach the bottom. From there, some physicists believe that those pieces that once were you could end up in another universe. 故选A。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段内容“However, nobody has ever seen or will see a black hole. A black hole is invisible, a blank spot in space, but scientists are able to know its existence by the effect it has on things around it. For example, if an object comes close to a black hole, it should be possible to see the powerful gravity of the black hole trying to pull the object in. In fact, this is exactly what scientists are planning to do: to observe one while it eats a very large object.( 然而,没有人见过黑洞,也不会有人看到黑洞。
根据最后一段中“A black hole is an eater. The nearer objects get to it, the hotter they become. Black holes also spin (旋转), and the extreme heat and spinning break up and expel large amounts of matter at extremely high temperatures.(黑洞是一个吞食者。物体离它越近,温度就越高。黑洞也会旋转,极端的热量和旋转会在极高的温度下分解并expel大量物质。)”可知,黑洞吞食一切,黑洞的极端热度和旋转使其分解并排出大量物质,因此推断“expel”的意思是“排出”。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段的“Black holes have a bottom, but you wouldn’t live to see it. (黑洞有一个底部,但你不会活着看到它。)”,第四段的“The black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy is peaceful but is currently pulling a gas cloud toward itself fast.( 位于银河系中心的黑洞是和平的,但目前正在快速地将气体云拉向自己。)”以及第五段的“A black hole is an eater.( 黑洞是一个吞食者。)”可知,文章讨论了黑洞的性质、它如何被发现以及它的影响等方面的信息,因此可知,这篇文章的主要内容是关于黑洞是什么以及它的各个方面。故选A。

He looked in every room and shouted out the words of welcome. He ran into the street to repeat them to those he might meet. The festive atmosphere swept up the neighborhood.
When he came back his father gave him two bright new silver dollars.

Here is a whole bundle of books. I give them to you, more as a reward for your goodness of heart than as a New Year’s gift.
