Lily Rice Lily Rice was born in Wales with a special disease, which causes her leg muscles to be weak. As an Olympic swimmer, she became the first European female to land a wheelchair backflip (后空翻). She practiced for 6 hours a day, with some big falls before landing the backflip on a ramp (斜坡). Lily hopes to inspire other teenage girls to take up BMX riding and skateboarding. Krystal Cantu 28-year-old Krystal Cantu, an enthusiastic fitness trainer, lost her right arm in a horrible car accident in 2013 when she was driving outside of San Antonio, Texas. Amazingly, the accident did nothing to her passion. She says the accident was the best thing that could have happened to her, and that so much good has come from it. She has broken all her personal weightlifting records that she set when she had two arms. Angela Bachiller Angela Bachiller is Spain’s first city official with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征). She worked for three years in Social Welfare and Family as an administrative assistant (行政助理), and then got an opportunity to stand for election. Her main aim was to protect women’s rights, saying she believes that women need to play a more active role in politics. Marlee Matlin Marlee Matlin lost all hearing in one ear, and 80 percent in the other at the age of 18 months. At 21, she had her first film named Children of A Lesser God. For her role she won a Golden Globe Award for best actress in a drama, and an Academy Award for best actress. To date, she is the only deaf person to have won the award. In 2002 she published her first novel titled Deaf Child Crossing, which was followed by another titled Nobody’s Perfect. 21. What is special about Lily Rice? A. She was weak when she was born. B. She broke her weightlifting records. C. She set a record for the wheelchair backflip. D. She encouraged teenage girls to be an athletes. 22. Who published some well-known books according to the text? A. Lily Rice. B. Krystal Cantu. C. Angela Bachiller. D. Marlee Matlin. 23 What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text? A. To prove that diseases can be cured. B. To introduce some inspiring models. C. To tell about the ways to achieve success. D. To compare achievements of different people. B I’d been invited to help organize a charity party. It would be nice to get out of the house to make a difference to others’ lives. I looked in the mirror and nodded my head in approval. It was going to be a great day! After everything was done, we went to an all-you-can-eat buffet (自助餐). We arrived and I headed straight for my favorite section — the salad. I loaded my plate with lettuce, cauliflower, and cucumbers. As I reached for the salad dressing, an elderly man bumped (撞) into me. “Oh, I’m sorry. Excuse me,” I said pleasantly. I hadn’t moved so I knew it was he who had bumped into me. I felt a little sorry for him. I didn’t want him to feel bad so I apologized first. “I guess you just couldn’t wait to get to the food, could you? Look at your size,” he answered. My mouth dropped open and I no longer felt sorry for him. A million thoughts ran through my head. Should I try to shame him by telling him that I had gained weight due to a side effect of antidepressants (抗抑郁药)? Would it matter to him that I hadn’t always looked like this... that I had once been thin? And then it hit me... Did it matter to me? I immediately ran away from him. That evening I played the old man’s words over and over again in my mind. I was finally feeling better after years of antidepressant treatment. Sure I had gained some weight, but I had gained something else along the way. I’d become much more caring toward other hurting hearts. I gained insight into the people and things that are truly important in life. It felt good to feel good again. I would not allow this complete stranger to steal my joy. His words said more about him than they did about me. For the second time that day, I felt sorry for the old man. 24. Why did the author apologize to the elderly man first? A. She wanted him to feel comfortable. B. She knocked him down in a hurry. C. She was required to do that by him. D. She was uncertain if she was wrong. 25. How did the author react to the old man’s words? A. She explained why she had gained weight. B. She shamed him and walked away at once. C. She was more than shocked and hurt. D. She felt annoyed and shouted at him. 26. What can be inferred about the author? A. She rarely goes out to social events. B. She once went through a tough period of time. C. She cares little about what others think of her. D. She hadn’t known the side effects of antidepressants. 27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. The importance of helping others. B. The need to fight for fairness. C. The struggle of being overweight. D. The journey to self-acceptance. C After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park. By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves. Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around. The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations — major food sources (来源) for the wolf — grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation (植被), which reduced plant diversity in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’s red foxes, and completely drove away the park’s beavers. As early as 1966, biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets. The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone. Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone. Elk, deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well. 28. What is the text mainly about? A. Wildlife research in the United States. B. Plant diversity in the Yellowstone area. C. The conflict between farmers and gray wolves. D. The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park. 29. What does the underlined word “displaced” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Forced out. B. Separated. C. Tested. D. Tracked down. 30. What did the disappearance of gray wolves bring about? A. Damage to local ecology (生态). B. A decline in the park’s income. C. Preservation of vegetation. D. An increase in the variety of animals. 31 What is the author’s attitude towards the Yellowstone wolf project? A. Disapproving. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring. D An important development in forensic science, the scientific methods used for finding out about a crime, has come from cooperative efforts between researchers at Shanghai Normal University in China and the University of Bath in the UK. The teamwork has led to the creation of a water-soluble fluorescent spray (水溶性荧光喷雾) that significantly advanced the detection of possible fingerprints. Unlike traditional methods that often involve the use of poisonous or environmentally harmful chemicals, this innovative spray offers a safer and greener choice. By targeting the invisible prints left behind by sweat or oil on surfaces, the spray quickly makes them visible within seconds, promoting convenience and speed in forensic investigations. According to researchers, its water solubility further improves its applicability, allowing for adaptable use directly at crime scenes. Detecting latent (hidden) fingerprints (LFPs) is important in forensic science, but their invisible nature poses challenges. Traditional methods like powder dusting and chemicals have limitations in speed and safety. Using the fluorescence properties of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP), the researchers have developed two distinct dyes (染料) — LFP-Yellow and LFP-Red to address these challenges. These dyes exhibit an “off-on” fluorescence response upon different parts of LFPs, by selectively attaching to small elements present in fingerprints. Under blue light, they give out a soft fluorescent light, enabling easy detection. Developed from jellyfish (水母;海蜇), GFP serves as a biological basis for these dyes, ensuring they do not affect the following DNA analysis of the fingerprints. According to researchers, applying these dyes involves a fine spray, which prevents damaging spots and offers a cleaner way, compared to traditional methods. It works perfectly even on rough surfaces like brick, where collecting fingerprints can be particularly arduous. “This system can even be used on fingerprints that are a week old. Having two different colors available means the spray can be used on different colored surfaces. We’re hoping to produce more colors in the future. We’re looking for cooperation with various companies to bring the dyes to market for wide availability. Additionally, ongoing research and development efforts will be needed to continue to improve their products,” said Professor Tony James, from the University of Bath. 32. What is the advantage of the new spray over previous methods? A. It’s more accurate and applicable. B. It’s more effective and eco-friendly. C. It’s colorful and easy to produce. D. It’s cleaner and convenient to carry. 33. How do the two dyes make LFPs visible? A. By helping collect and analyze the DNA of them. B. By attaching to them and exhibiting them as fluorescent light. C. By taking in fluorescence and reflecting blue light to them. D. By slowing down the fluorescence response of finger elements. 34. What does the underlined word “arduous” mean in the fifth paragraph? A. Practical. B. Fruitful. C. Debatable. D. Difficult. 35. What do Tony James’ words intend to say about the spray? A. Its limitations on fingerprints’ existence time will be removed. B. It will be applied to various fields in the future. C. Its improvement can promise a brighter future. D. It could replace DNA analysis in forensics. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项 涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Sometimes, we get so busy that we end up losing connection with ourselves, others, or the world around us. One day, as I parked my car and walked towards the office, I noticed two boys who appeared to be around eight years old, selling popcorn on the street corner. Curious, I approached them and requested half a kilogram of popcorn. They prepared it for me within five minutes. “How much is it?” I asked. “It’s 30 rupees, sir,” they replied. I then asked their names, and they answered, “Sahib, Asib.” I asked Sahib why they weren’t in school and were selling popcorn instead. Sahib explained that they were doing it to earn money for their schooling. However, Asib quickly interjected (插话), saying they had no money left after covering food and medicine, not to mention schooling fees. “Medicine for what? You guys are looking well,” I said. Asib replied, “Our mother has a kidney (肾) disease, so we need money to purchase medicine for her treatment.” When I inquired about their father, Sahib sadly shared that he had passed away from cancer four years before, leaving their mother to support them with two jobs. I was deeply moved and struggled to find words. Before leaving, I asked whether they would be there the next day, intending to buy some then. They assured me they would come. “Take care, boys,” I said as I left. The next day, I returned to the spot where I had met Sahib and Asib the day before, but they were not selling popcorn as usual, standing there with a single bag of popcorn. I asked why and they explained that they had been waiting for me but had to leave because their mother’s health had got worse. They were too shocked to say a word. I told them I would try my best to help them go back to school and help their mother cure her disease. Hearing these words, the boys were so touched that tears poured out of their eyes. They cried, “Thank you very much...” Having a sudden idea, I left them immediately and returned to my office. Paragraph 2: At my office, I penned down this touching story and made the decision to share it with the public. I appealed to fellow citizens to extend their support, emphasizing that with everyone’s contribution of a little love, the kids would not fear to lose their mother or face homelessness. They shouldn’t have to resort to selling popcorn or dropping out of school. The response to my appeal was overwhelming. With the collective efforts of the community, the mother’s condition was stabilized, and the children went back to school. It was the joint love that turned a story of hardship into a story of hope. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始。Have you finished your homework, mike? Hello, i've been working on a paper on organic chemistry these days. I was told that your library has some related information here. Yes, we have a large number of journals. We also have quite a few newspapers and videos about this subject. I think some journals are enough. How can I find out the ones I want? I can give you a list of all of them, but if you want to search by author or by content, you can use one of the computers over there in the corner. You can also search for all outside books just by typing your request into the computer. You mean, I can get books from other universities. not only from other universities, but from almost any public or private library in the united states. The only problem is that outside books cannot be checked out. Hello, i've been working on a paper on organic chemistry these days. I was told that your library has some related information here. We set off early in the morning about two hours after sunrise. We were up in the balloon for an hour, although the whole experience took three hours in all because of the training without pilot ban. Before we took off, the view was wonderful. I was able to see all the way to the mountains. We also flew over some great sites in our town, like the castle, which I go to a lot, and the river. And I didn't realize that a bridge we flow over was the one I crossed to school every day. IT looked really different. Everyone had said I should wear thick clothes for the flight, as it'd be called in the basket. But in fact, I felt warm. The only problem was that I felt a bit uncomfortable in the basket. There were only six of us, so IT wasn't crowded, but there was nowhere to sit. We had to stand all the way, so IT was time to come down. Balloons often land somewhere like a farm or a park, but ban made us come down on a football field. There was a crowd watching when we got there. IT was exciting.
