B During evenings spent with her crafting (手工艺) group, Kate Smith has produced a host of lovely pieces: hand-made bags, summer dresses, and even jewellery. But the thing she’s most proud of creating is a group of close friends that value each other’s company. The four members of the group, Smith, Ratnett, Jenny and Clark, whose children were of the similar ages, first met at the school gate in the village of Marshfield. Later Smith ran a shop called Makery, selling craft materials and running in-store workshops. When the four got chatting, it turned out that they all showed interest in crafting and had all popped into the shop at one time or another. From then on, they have been meeting regularly to get crafty, taking it in turns to host at home. During their craft nights, the group will either work on their own projects or deal with a craft task together. Everyone will bring something delicious to eat, always Clark’s famous homemade bread, sometimes chocolates or a bottle of prosecco. But although all four women love to get their craft on, the real highlight of the evening is the chance to catch up. “We’ll give each other a big hug when we see each other,” says Smith. “Sometimes we’ll have a lot going on at home, but at our crafting evenings we can just let it all out. We don’t have to pretend everything is all right. I get a huge sense of comfort from asking their opinions on things, and we love sharing and learning new skills together. It’s a safe space filled with lovely people, and just really therapeutic (治愈的).” With Clark due to move back to her native New Zealand in November, the group plans to meet as regularly as they can in the run-up, and continue their meetings via video call once she’s overseas. As Christmas approaches, they’re also planning to keep up their crafting traditions. 4. What does Smith take greatest pride in about her crafting group? A. The creation of beautiful craftwork. B. The chance to improve crafting skills. C. The close relationship among friends. D. The lifelong company of the members. 5. What brought the four members together in Makery? A. Their children of similar ages. B. Their shared interest in crafting. C. Their common habit in shopping. D. Their idea of running workshops. 6. What is the best part of the crafting evenings? A. Supporting each other. B. Enjoying delicious food. C. Improving new art skills. D. Working on their project. 7. Which of the following is the group’s future plan? A. They will move together soon. B. They will meet every Christmas. C. They will travel to New Zealand. D. They will keep their traditions alive. C Robots have learned to drive on Mars, carry out brain operation and defeat master chess players. But when it comes to baking, making tasty desserts is far from a piece of cake. After many failed attempts, US researchers have successfully 3D printed a cherry cheesecake, although the outcome is unlikely to trouble the world’s dessert masters. In the latest experiment, researchers tried various cheesecake designs. In early attempts, which involved simply adding ingredients one by one, the team found that the cake quickly turned into a mixture. Through trial and error, they discovered that a more architectural solution was needed. Walls of biscuit base were required throughout the cake to hold the softer ingredients, while triangular (三角的) biscuit supports on the inside were necessary to keep the cake from falling apart. “To print the cake successfully, we need to put the ingredients together in a careful way,” said the team leader Cooper. Although much work is still needed to collect data and improve the designs scientists are hopeful that once mastered, 3D printing could replace traditional cooking, allowing food to be adapted to different nutritional(营养)needs. “We have a huge problem with the low nutrition of processed foods,” said Cooper. “3D food printing will still produce processed foods, but perhaps the silver lining will be, for some people, a better control of nutrition based on personalized needs.” The team said 3D printing could also allow chefs to create entirely new food experiences, with flavours and textures (质地) placed very precisely. “It is particularly practical for the plant-based meat market, where texture and flavour need to be carefully designed to taste like real meats,” said Cooper. And, with more concern about food safety, food prepared with less human handling could lower the risk of food-related illness and the spread of disease. According to Cooper, this seems like a win-win solution for all of us. 8. Why does the author mention robots in paragraph 1? A. To show the disadvantages of 3D printing. B. To introduce the popularity of using robots. C. To stress the difficulty of 3D printing desserts. D. To explain the function of robots in different areas. 9. What is the key to the success of the 3D printed cheesecake? A. The thickness of biscuit walls. B. The flexibility of inside support. C. The unique taste of ingredients. D. The structural design of the cake. 10. What do the underlined words “the silver lining” in paragraph 3 mean? A. The side effect. B. The main reason. C. The positive aspect. D. The best solution. 11. What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning 3D printed food? A. Promising markets. B. Additional benefits. C. Practical concerns. D. Technical challenges. D Insomnia (失眠) is a sleep disorder that affects about 10% of adults in the United States. It is characterized by difficulty with falling asleep, or waking up too early, at least three times per week for a period of three months or more. If you happen to struggle with insomnia, you can try a weighted metal chain blanket (金属链毯子), one that might sound a little strange but effective. A team of researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a study to determine whether a weighted metal chain blanket could improve insomnia symptoms (症状) compared to a light plastic chain blanket. Subjects were randomly given either a weighted metal chain blanket or a light plastic chain blanket, which were the same shape and size. Those who were provided with a weighted metal chain blanket first tried on an 8-kilogram blanket. If this was too heavy, a 6-kilogram blanket was then provided. Over a four-week period, their sleep was judged using surveys and a wrist-based device called an actigraph. They found participants who used the weighted metal chain blanket reported that their insomnia symptoms dropped significantly, while those who had used the light plastic chain blanket did not experience such obvious improvements. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms decreased much more for those who used the weighted metal chain blanket than those who used the light plastic chain blanket. The principle behind these blankets is that the pressure of the weight provides some value of treatment. It’s almost like a baby’s wrapping blanket that calms it as it sleeps. Weighted blankets can calm your nerves. Pressure from the blanket may contribute to nervous system responses that lower your heart rate and breathing when you’re anxious. This can help you calm down and sleep. The pressure could also cause your brain to release a chemical called serotonin, which helps your mind and body calm down. “While these findings are promising, more research is needed to support the effectiveness,” says the lead researcher. 12. How does the author introduce the topic? A. By analyzing causes. B. By raising a question. C. By giving an example. D. By describing symptoms. 13. What does paragraph 2 focus on concerning the research? A. Its process. B. Its background. C. Its findings. D. Its limitations. 14. Why can a weighted metal chain blanket promise a better sleep? A. It monitors people’s heart rate. B. It gives off comforting chemicals. C. Its pressure calms people down. D. Its material reduces people’s anxiety. 15. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the research? A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Objective. D. Supportive. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How does it feel when you solve your problem by yourself? B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了四部著名作品,分别阐述了每部作品的作者、故事情节及所探讨的深层主题。 【1题详解】 细节理解题。 根据A Raisin in the Sun部分中“The story follows the Youngers, a working class black family living on the South Side of Chicago who move to an all-white neighborhood and struggle with the unfair treatment(故事围绕扬格一家展开,这是一个生活在芝加哥南区的工人阶级黑人家庭,他们搬到了一个全是白人的社区,并因不公平待遇而挣扎)”可知,该书聚焦美国黑人家庭的生活与困境,最适合研究美国黑人相关课题的人。故选B。 【2题详解】 推理判断题。 根据Frankenstein部分中“The story was published in 1818 and introduced readers to Dr Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who brings to life a creature that he put together from the parts of the dead body(该故事出版于1818年,向读者介绍了维克多・弗兰肯斯坦博士,这位科学家将尸体部件拼凑成一个生物,并使其复活)”可知,书中“复活尸体部件组成的生物”属于科幻元素,因此《弗兰肯斯坦》是一部科幻小说。故选D。 【3题详解】 细节理解题。 根据 Animal Farm部分中“This classic isn’t about animal rights. Orwell wrote it to protest against Stalinism in Russia(这部经典作品与动物权利无关。奥威尔写这本书是为了抗议俄罗斯的斯大林主义)”可知,奥威尔创作《动物农场》的目的是抨击斯大林主义政权。故选B。 B During evenings spent with her crafting (手工艺) group, Kate Smith has produced a host of lovely pieces: hand-made bags, summer dresses, and even jewellery. B. Although much work is still needed to collect data and improve the designs, scientists are hopeful that once mastered, 3D printing could replace traditional cooking, allowing food to be adapted to different nutritional(营养)needs. 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. C 11. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了美国研究人员成功地用3D打印技术制作了樱桃芝士蛋糕。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中“Robots have learned to drive on Mars, carry out brain operation and defeat master chess players. But when it comes to baking, making tasty desserts is far from a piece of cake. After many failed attempts, US researchers have successfully 3D printed a cherry cheesecake, although the outcome is unlikely to trouble the world’s dessert masters.(机器人已经学会了在火星上驾驶,进行大脑操作和击败国际象棋大师。但是说到烘焙,做出美味的甜点可不是小菜一碟。经过多次失败的尝试,美国研究人员成功地用3D 技术打印出了一个樱桃奶酪蛋糕,尽管这个结果不太可能困扰世界甜点大师们)”可知,机器人能在火星上驾驶,但是却很难做出美味的甜品,由此可推知,作者在第一段中提到机器人是为了强调3D打印甜点是有难度的。故选C。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“Through trial and error, they discovered that a more architectural solution was needed. Walls of biscuit base were required throughout the cake to hold the softer ingredients, while triangular (三角的) biscuit supports on the inside were necessary to keep the cake from falling apart.(通过反复试验,他们发现需要一个更加体系结构化的解决方案。整个蛋糕需要饼干底座的墙壁来容纳较软的成分,而内部的三角形饼干支架是必要的,以防止蛋糕掉下来)”可推知,3D打印芝士蛋糕成功的关键是蛋糕的结构设计。故选D。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线短语所在句子“3D food printing will still produce processed foods, but perhaps the silver lining will be, for some people, a better control of nutrition based on personalized needs.(3D食品打印仍将生产加工食品,但也许the silver lining将是,对一些人来说,基于个性化的需求能更好地控制营养)”中but可知,前后是转折关系,3D食品打印仍将生产加工食品,这是不好的一面,但是对一些人来说,基于个性化的需求能更好地控制营养,这是它的积极方面。由此猜测,划线短语the silver lining意为“积极的方面”,故选C。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“And, with more concern about food safety, food prepared with less human handling could lower the risk of food-related illness and the spread of disease. According to Cooper, this seems like a win-win solution for all of us.(此外,由于人们对食物安全的关注日益增加,以较少人手处理的食物可以降低与食物有关的疾病和疾病传播的风险。据库珀所说,这对我们来说是个双赢的解决方案)”可知,最后一段主要介绍了关于3D打印食品的附加好处,故选B。 D Insomnia (失眠) is a sleep disorder that affects about 10% of adults in the United States. A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Objective. D. Supportive. 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. Things may not always go as planned, but being resourceful can help you stay calm and work your way out of tricky situations. Being resourceful means finding smart and creative ways to solve a problem, using whatever resources you have at the time. ____16____ They can also be anything else that’s useful, such as information, advice or your own experience. It also means trusting your instincts, the ability you’re born with, rather than through training and being confident about your ability to face challenges. A resourceful person is not the one getting cross or panicking when something goes wrong. They’re thinking about how to solve the problem. _____17_____ when we learn to problem solve for ourselves rather than immediately going to others for help, it can help to build our confidence, help us feel more independent, and feel better about making decisions. Being resourceful may not help you avoid problems, but thinking creatively about how you can deal with them will make you feel less stressed and more prepared next time. _____18_____ This can boost self-esteem, that is, how you feel about yourself. When you’re facing a challenge, try to focus on the actual problem rather than how you feel about it. Think about where and when it happened and what the causes are. Next, think up as many solutions to the problem as you can. ____19____ Finally, review what has and hasn’t worked, so you’re equipped to deal with a situation next time. And remember, if you have a tricky problem that you’re unable to solve, then ask a trusted adult for help. ____20____ A. You also learn what you’re good at. B Here is how you can be more resourceful. C. These may be practical things like pens and paper. D. No one is expected to solve all problems by themselves. E. Resourcefulness is a skill that’s good for you in lots of ways. F.
