These famous books tell exciting stories with deep meanings. Let’s discover how they explore human nature and power!
The Importance of Being Earnest (Author: Oscar Wilde)
This comedic play by Oscar Wilde takes a sharp look at Victorian social values while following two men — Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff — as they tell lies to bring some excitement to their lives. The Importance of Being Earnest was Wilde’s final play, and some consider it his masterpiece.
A Raisin in the Sun (Author: Lorraine Hansberry)
The story follows the Youngers, a working-class black family living on the South Side of Chicago, who move to an all-white neighborhood and struggle with the unfair treatment. In 1959, Lorraine Hansberry became the first black playwright to get a play produced on Broadway.
Frankenstein (Author: Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley)
The story was published in 1818 and introduced readers to Dr Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who brings to life a creature that he put together from the parts of the dead body. Although Dr Frankenstein is frightened by his creation and gives up the plan halfway, the creature manages to educate itself and then seeks a punishment on his creator. The novel explores humanity’s desire for creation and the fear of the change it brings.
Animal Farm (Author: George Orwell)
A group of farm animals fight against their master, Mr Jones, after they realize he is mistreating them and offering them nothing in return for their work. When they challenge the leadership, they are punished for speaking out. This classic isn’t about animal rights. Orwell wrote it to protest (抗议) against Stalinism (斯大林主义) in Russia.

During evenings spent with her crafting (手工艺) group, Kate Smith has produced a host of lovely pieces: hand-made bags, summer dresses, and even jewellery. But the thing she’s most proud of creating is a group of close friends that value each other’s company.
The four members of the group, Smith, Ratnett, Jenny and Clark, whose children were of the similar ages, first met at the school gate in the village of Marshfield. Later Smith ran a shop called Makery, selling craft materials and running in-store workshops. When the four got chatting, it turned out that they all showed interest in crafting and had all popped into the shop at one time or another. From then on, they have been meeting regularly to get crafty, taking it in turns to host at home.
During their craft nights, the group will either work on their own projects or deal with a craft task together. Everyone will bring something delicious to eat, always Clark’s famous homemade bread, sometimes chocolates or a bottle of prosecco. But although all four women love to get their craft on, the real highlight of the evening is the chance to catch up.
“We’ll give each other a big hug when we see each other,” says Smith. “Sometimes we’ll have a lot going on at home, but at our crafting evenings we can just let it all out. We don’t have to pretend everything is all right. I get a huge sense of comfort from asking their opinions on things, and we love sharing and learning new skills together. It’s a safe space filled with lovely people, and just really therapeutic (治愈的).”
With Clark due to move back to her native New Zealand in November, the group plans to meet as regularly as they can in the run-up, and continue their meetings via video call once she’s overseas. As Christmas approaches, they’re also planning to keep up their crafting traditions.
4. What does Smith take greatest pride in about her crafting group?
A. The creation of beautiful craftwork.
B. The chance to improve crafting skills.
C. The close relationship among friends.
D. The lifelong company of the members.
5. What brought the four members together in Makery?
A. Their children of similar ages.
B. Their shared interest in crafting.
C. Their common habit in shopping.
D. Their idea of running workshops.
6. What is the best part of the crafting evenings?
A. Supporting each other.
B. Enjoying delicious food.
C. Improving new art skills.
D. Working on their project.
7. Which of the following is the group’s future plan?
A. They will move together soon.
B. They will meet every Christmas.
C They will travel to New Zealand.
D. They will keep their traditions alive.

Robots have learned to drive on Mars, carry out brain operation and defeat master chess players. But when it comes to baking, making tasty desserts is far from a piece of cake. After many failed attempts, US researchers have successfully 3D printed a cherry cheesecake, although the outcome is unlikely to trouble the world’s dessert masters.
In the latest experiment, researchers tried various cheesecake designs. In early attempts, which involved simply adding ingredients one by one, the team found that the cake quickly turned into a mixture. Through trial and error, they discovered that a more architectural solution was needed. Walls of biscuit base were required throughout the cake to hold the softer ingredients, while triangular (三角的) biscuit supports on the inside were necessary to keep the cake from falling apart. “To print the cake successfully, we need to put the ingredients together in a careful way,” said the team leader Cooper.
Although much work is still needed to collect data and improve the designs, scientists are hopeful that once mastered, 3D printing could replace traditional cooking, allowing food to be adapted to different nutritional(营养)needs. “We have a huge problem with the low nutrition of processed foods,” said Cooper. “3D food printing will still produce processed foods, but perhaps the silver lining will be, for some people, a better control of nutrition based on personalized needs.”
The team said 3D printing could also allow chefs to create entirely new food experiences, with flavours and textures (质地) placed very precisely. “It is particularly practical for the plant-based meat market, where texture and flavour need to be carefully designed to taste like real meats,” said Cooper. And, with more concern about food safety, food prepared with less human handling could lower the risk of food-related illness and the spread of disease. According to Cooper, this seems like a win-win solution for all of us.
8. Why does the author mention robots in paragraph 1?
A. To show the disadvantages of 3D printing.
B. To introduce the popularity of using robots.
C. To stress the difficulty of 3D printing desserts.
D. To explain the function of robots in different areas.
9. What is the key to the success of the 3D printed cheesecake?
A. The thickness of biscuit walls. B. The flexibility of inside support.
C. The unique taste of ingredients. D. The structural design of the cake.
10. What do the underlined words “the silver lining” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. The side effect. B. The main reason.
C. The positive aspect. D. The best solution.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning 3D printed food?
A. Promising markets. B. Additional benefits.
C. Practical concerns. D. Technical challenges.

Insomnia (失眠) is a sleep disorder that affects about 10% of adults in the United States. It is characterized by difficulty with falling asleep, or waking up too early, at least three times per week for a period of three months or more. If you happen to struggle with insomnia, you can try a weighted metal chain blanket (金属链毯子), one that might sound a little strange but effective.
A team of researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a study to determine whether a weighted metal chain blanket could improve insomnia symptoms (症状) compared to a light plastic chain blanket. Subjects were randomly given either a weighted metal chain blanket or a light plastic chain blanket, which were the same shape and size. Those who were provided with a weighted metal chain blanket first tried on an 8-kilogram blanket. If this was too heavy, a 6-kilogram blanket was then provided. Over a four-week period, their sleep was judged using surveys and a wrist-based device called an actigraph.
They found participants who used the weighted metal chain blanket reported that their insomnia symptoms dropped significantly, while those who had used the light plastic chain blanket did not experience such obvious improvements. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms decreased much more for those who used the weighted metal chain blanket than those who used the light plastic chain blanket.
The principle behind these blankets is that the pressure of the weight provides some value of treatment. It’s almost like a baby’s wrapping blanket that calms it as it sleeps. Weighted blankets can calm your nerves. Pressure from the blanket may contribute to nervous system responses that lower your heart rate and breathing when you’re anxious. This can help you calm down and sleep. The pressure could also cause your brain to release a chemical called serotonin, which helps your mind and body calm down.
“While these findings are promising, more research is needed to support the effectiveness,” says the lead researcher.
12. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By analyzing causes. B. By raising a question.
C By giving an example. D. By describing symptoms.
13. What does paragraph 2 focus on concerning the research?
A. Its process. B. Its background.
C. Its findings. D. Its limitations.
14. Why can a weighted metal chain blanket promise a better sleep?
A. It monitors people’s heart rate. B. It gives off comforting chemicals.
C. Its pressure calms people down. D. Its material reduces people’s anxiety.
15 Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the research?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Objective. D. Supportive.
