Volunteering is a good way for teenagers to make a difference and meet new people. Here are a few volunteer opportunities that you could encourage your teen to take up.
Help a local food bank
Food banks always welcome donations (捐赠) and new volunteers. They provide perfect volunteering opportunities for those who are interested in helping the homeless. Your teen would be involved in anything, from preparing meals to working behind the scenes to repack donated food items, serving food, and carrying boxes.
Help at a soup kitchen
A soup kitchen is one of the places where the hungry can get free or affordable meals (usually soup and bread). Most soup kitchens run mainly on donations and the generosity of people. As a soup kitchen volunteer, your child may clean the tables and plates, help distribute food, cook food, and more.
Volunteer for Meals on Wheels
By volunteering for Meals on Wheels, your teen will deliver nutritious meals to the elderly or the disabled. It’s perfect for teens who have just received their driving license and love any reason to get behind the wheel!

Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. With over 40 years of experience, he taps the overgrown ground with a wooden stick, warning wild animals for safety.
He lives in Shixia village near the 8.6-kilometer part. Shixia villagers have a deep love for the wall. Mei remembers when he ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on the large building as a child. However in 1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. “Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses,” Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter.
In 1984, a Great Wall protection program started, with Mei’s effort encouraging many, and it was quickly picked up by villagers in Shixia. Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organisation, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. His niece, Liu Hongyan, encouraged by him, also became a guardian in 2019. “When I was a child, my uncle always told me his patrol stories and talked about the history of the Great Wall,” Liu says. “It is my duty and responsibility to protect the Great Wall.”
Mei’s hard work has made a difference. From 2015 to 2023, 289 protection projects were allowed and thousands of guardians joined.
Even though there is progress, the Shixiaguan part still remains closed to the public. “My biggest wish,” Mei says, “is to see the Great Wall well-protected and open for all to visit, encouraging more people to join us in protecting it.”
4. What made Mei Jingtian decide to protect the Great Wall?
A. The dream of being a hero. B. The influence of his friends.
C. Poor condition of the Great Wall. D. Encouragement from the villagers.

A. Careful and confident. B. Kind-hearted and humorous.
C. Creative and curious. D. Responsible and strong-willed.

Insomnia (失眠) is a sleep disorder that affects about 10% of adults in the United States. It is characterized by difficulty with falling asleep, or waking up too early, at least three times per week for a period of three months or more. If you happen to struggle with insomnia, you can try a weighted metal chain blanket (金属链毯子), one that might sound a little strange but effective.
A team of researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a study to determine whether a weighted metal chain blanket could improve insomnia symptoms (症状) compared to a light plastic chain blanket. Subjects were randomly given either a weighted metal chain blanket or a light plastic chain blanket, which were the same shape and size. Those who were provided with a weighted metal chain blanket first tried on an 8-kilogram blanket. If this was too heavy, a 6-kilogram blanket was then provided. Over a four-week period, their sleep was judged using surveys and a wrist-based device called an actigraph.
They found participants who used the weighted metal chain blanket reported that their insomnia symptoms dropped significantly, while those who had used the light plastic chain blanket did not experience such obvious improvements. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms decreased much more for those who used the weighted metal chain blanket than those who used the light plastic chain blanket.
The principle behind these blankets is that the pressure of the weight provides some value of treatment. It’s almost like a baby’s wrapping blanket that calms it as it sleeps. Weighted blankets can calm your nerves. Pressure from the blanket may contribute to nervous system responses that lower your heart rate and breathing when you’re anxious. This can help you calm down and sleep. The pressure could also cause your brain to release a chemical called serotonin, which helps your mind and body calm down.
“While these findings are promising, more research is needed to support the effectiveness,” says the lead researcher.
8. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By analyzing causes. B. By raising a question.
C. By giving an example. D. By describing symptoms.
9. What does paragraph 2 focus on concerning the research?
A Its process. B. Its background.
C. Its findings. D. Its limitations.
10. Why can a weighted metal chain blanket promise a better sleep?
A It monitors people’s heart rate. B. It gives off comforting chemicals.
C. Its pressure calms people down. D. Its material reduces people’s anxiety.
11. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the research?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Objective. D. Supportive.

Studying the DNA of 300 mice has flagged up (引起注意) genes which have been linked to hereditary (遗传的) sight loss for the first time. Researchers say because mice’s genes are so similar to humans’, their findings could lead to the treatment of more genetic diseases.
Scientists at the University of California, Davis studied information from a data bank of mice’s genetic material. They found 347 genes linked to eye problems, with just 86 of them having been studied in the past.
Only around 50 to 75 percent of hereditary eye diseases in human can be explained with present science. The researchers believe these hundreds of new genes found in mice could be a key to explaining and therefore being able to treat the other 25-50 percent.
“This is extremely valuable for people with hereditary eye disease,” said researcher Professor Ala Moshiri. “All researchers are going to start using these data. In the past, we knew the problem was there but we didn’t know where to look. Now eye centers can call back patients and screen them for these new genes. We expected that more and more of these genetic diseases will be treatable.” Also, the fact is that more than 60 percent of eye problems at birth are ones resulting from the baby’s parents!
Thanks to data from the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC), which is trying to work out what every single gene in a mouse is responsible for, with the aim of translating it to humans, scientists are moving closer to figuring out all genetic causes of blindness. To do this, scientists separate a single gene from other ones at a time and then observe what effect it has on the mouse for a long time. This has so far been done more than 7,000 times and has achieved great success. Researchers are now working alongside eye care centers in Texas and Iowa in order to compare the mice’s genes to those of patients.
12. How did the researchers find the genes linked to eye problems?
A. By tracking down the baby’s parents.
B. By screening patients for new genes.
C. By studying the data of mice’s genes.
D. By figuring out all genetic causes.
13. Why is the percentage of genetic eye problems mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To warn the high-risk level of suffering them.
B. To prove mice’s genes are similar to humans’.
C. To explain how common they are among people.
D. To show the importance of studying mice’s genes.
14. What should scientists do first to unlock secrets of genetic blindness?
A. Set apart a gene of mouse each time.
B. Compare human’s genes with mice’s.
C. Cooperate with eye care centers.
D. Identify each gene’s function of a mouse.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. New Ways to Cure Sight Loss
B. Genes Found Behind Eye Problems
C. Genetic Disease Discovered in Mice
D. Humans Genes Causing Eye Disease

5. What do the underlined words “picked up” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Recognised. B. Finished. C. Managed. D. Developed.
6. Which of the following best describes Mei Jingtian?
A. Careful and confident. B. Kind-hearted and humorous.
C. Creative and curious. D. Responsible and strong-willed.
7. What does the text mainly talk about?

They found participants who used the weighted metal chain blanket reported that their insomnia symptoms dropped significantly while those who had used the light plastic chain blanket did not experience such obvious improvements.

C. By giving an example. D. By describing symptoms.
9. What does paragraph 2 focus on concerning the research?
A. Its process. B. Its background.
C. Its findings. D. Its limitations.
10. Why can a weighted metal chain blanket promise a better sleep?
A. It monitors people’s heart rate.

D Identify each gene’s function of a mouse.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. New Ways to Cure Sight Loss
B. Genes Found Behind Eye Problems
C. Genetic Disease Discovered in Mice
D. Humans Genes Causing Eye Disease

Dear David,
I’m thrilled to know you’re learning Chinese. It’s normal to feel a bit anxious at first, but this feeling will fade quickly. Here are some suggestions.
First, read aloud little poems. Chinese is a beautiful language, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy its rhythm. Second, try to communicate often. You may try joining Chinese cultural clubs at your school to meet like-minded friends. That way, you will feel more relaxed and comfortable. Last but not least, make use of websites of Chinese media, such as China Daily or CGTN, where abundant high-quality learning resources are available. By immersing yourself in these resources, you’ll soon have a deeper insight and eventually be eager to learn more.
As the saying goes, “The Great Wall was not built in one day.” I’m convinced that your persistent efforts will pay off. Go for it, David!
