Cameron looked down on Henry and spent his time at summer camp keeping away from him. Henry never followed the rules, and that drove Cameron crazy.
Cameron hated the fact that the boat ride was at least 5 miles long. Just then Cameron felt some small drops of water again on his neck.

Sure enough, when Cameron looked up, he could see light rain coming down. Things got quiet in the boat after that. Before long, the small drops turned into large ones, and thunder and lightning began racing across the sky. Cameron didn’t know what to do. Born and raised in Chicago, Linden first visited China in 1984. He received a scholarship (奖学金) from the Chinese government and came to study in Beijing. During his stay, he was deeply attracted by Chinese culture and would love to be its communicator.

Mum entered and told me Uncle Sam was taking me to Sparrow Hills. Unwilling to leave on such a cold day, I hesitated (犹豫) but didn’t want to disappoint Mum, so I put on my blue sweater. The doorbell rang, and Uncle Sam asked if I was ready.
“I suppose,” I replied, grabbing a warm wool hat. We headed to the station, catching the train to Sparrow Hills. The train is warm, and my body started to relax.
“Can we just stay on the train?” I said as the train stopped. Uncle Sam softly pulled me up and said, “You will miss all the fun.”
Outside, the wind was blowing strongly. The trees were shining and they swung in the wind.
“I don’t know how long I can stay out here,” I said as we started to walk uphill. He pulled me closer to the trees and said, “Listen!”
At first, I heard only the wind. Then came a jingling and chiming (叮叮当当). “That’s the music in winter,” My uncle said. I pulled my hat up to free my ears. I’ll have the TV on tomorrow, which should help.”
When I got off the bus the next day, I could hear it loud and clear: Lucky’s barking. After calling Ms. Smith, I look Lucky for a walk. We walked around the park three times before the dog calmed down. He kept nuzzling (蹭) my hand. “What’s going on?” I asked. “I wish I could understand you. We were both in great anger. “Jack! Never set foot in this house again!” shouted Father. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.
The street lights were shining, causing my feeling of sadness. I walked about, knowing nowhere to go.
A young father who held a child in his arm walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree (无忧无虑).
But now…I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because Dad is getting old. We are just like two persons coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened. I walked in the streets. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. I walked on. There were fewer and fewer people on the streets. When I finally reached the apartment block in which I lived, I saw that light was still on.
I thought to myself, “Is father waiting for me or is he still angry with me?”
In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, Dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps.
All the lights were off except Father’s.
Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any moments of regret (后悔). However, after an argument he has the habit of tucking (给……盖被子) me in while I am sleeping. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. On a Saturday night in January, I was making my way to a sleepover at Nathan’s house. This was going to be a wonderful adventure as I had never been to his place before. I had received the address, 39 Western Avenue, via text message. As I turned the corner and stepped onto Western Avenue, a large cloud moved in front of the moon, leaving a shadow (阴影) over everything.
In the dimness, I found it truly hard to see the house numbers clearly. However, not wanting to waste any time, I walked up the driveway of what I thought might be Nathan’s house. I rang the bell and waited patiently, expecting someone to open the door and welcome me. But no one came. Thinking that perhaps they hadn’t heard the first ring, I rang the bell again. After a few moments of waiting, I realized with a sinking feeling that I had made a mistake. I had gone to number 37 instead of 39.
Just then, the door of number 37 opened suddenly. The house was completely dark inside, so I could hardly see anything. Suddenly, there was a loud shout and a man rushed past me, running towards the street. Another man quickly followed him. They were in such a great hurry to leave that they dropped most of the things they were carrying. Curiosity (好奇心) getting the better of me, I picked up one of the items so that I could look at it more closely. To my surprise, it was a beautiful brooch. Right then, I understood what had been happening. These men must be thieves! Without hesitation (犹豫), I took out my phone and called the police.
I stood on the doorstep, anxiously waiting for what seemed like a long time. After five or ten minutes had passed, an unmarked police car finally arrived. Two policemen got out of the car. One of them immediately went into the house to look for clues while the other policeman asked me about the thieves. “You did extremely well,” he said with admiration. “It was really of you to interrupt (打断) those thieves and chase them away.” I felt a sense of pride and relief knowing that I had done the right thing.

Over the next several months, I came to know Chip well enough to see that he was neither evil nor uncontrollable.
But, one day, Chip threw a chair at his teacher and was sent to my office. I asked him what made him do this. He replied that his teacher hated him. He felt there was no way to ever get her to like him. I asked him if he would tell his teacher this. He nodded, and we called her into my office.
When the teacher came, I encouraged Chip to express his feelings. He then said that he knew he was a very, very bad boy, and he didn’t think anyone could ever like him. His teacher listened to him with heartfelt compassion. Then she gave him a big warm hug, telling him she didn’t hate him at all and, actually, she cared very much about him. Only sometimes Chip’s behavior really scared her. It was clear to both Chip and me that she really meant it.
I put my left arm on his shoulders and the right hand on his heart. I told him how wonderful and lovely I saw him to be. I praised how special and brave he was to express his hurt feelings.

Passage 11
Back in New York, I am fighting fires as the assistant captain (副队长) of a volunteer fire company.
I still remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene, so there was a pretty good chance I was going to get in. When I found the captain, he was having a very engaging conversation with the homeowner (房主), who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the pouring rain, under an umbrella, barefoot, while her house was in flames (在燃烧中).
The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me, was asked to go inside and save the homeowner’s dog. The dog! I was stunned with jealousy. For the rest of his life, he could tell people that he went into a burning building to save a living creature (动物)! Just because he arrived five seconds earlier than me. Well, I was next. The captain then waved me over. He said, “Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and get this woman a pair of shoes.” So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but off I went up the stairs, down the hall, past the “real” firefighters, who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point, into the master bedroom to get a pair of shoes.
Now I know what you’re thinking, but I’m no hero. I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other volunteer with the precious dog. We took our treasures outside to the homeowner, where, not surprisingly, his received much more attention than mine.
A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for saving her home. The act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.

He was 11 years old and went fishing every chance he got at his family’s small house on an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.
On the day before the bass (鲈鱼) season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening. Before long, when his pole bent over, he knew something huge was on the other end. His father watched his son with admiration as he successfully lifted the fish from the water.
The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish, the fish jumped up and down in the moonlight. The father looked at his watch. It was 10 P.M.- two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy. “You will have to put it back,” he said. “I have never seen such a big fish before,” cried the boy. “There will be other fish”, said his father. The boy looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Passage 14
阅读下面短文,从题中所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
It’s easy to know if the plate I’m washing is my grandfather’s—it will have no food left. My younger brother is the opposite—there’s always food left over. The feel of warm water and the dish soap on dinner plates always comfort me a lot at the end of a busy day.
About a year ago, our family dishwasher broke. My dad had just left for a work trip, so I offered to do the dishes by hand to help my busy mum.
At first, doing the dishes greatly annoyed me. I was in a rush to get them done because there was endless work waiting for me to do. However, slowly, the task of washing off food leftovers soon led to a transformation in me. So even when we did finally buy a new dishwasher, I still kept washing the dishes by hand after dinner.
I always start with the dinner plates. I have learned to turn them over and wash the bottom. Then I move to any bowls that have been used. After the bowls, I turn to the dishes used to cook.
Standing in the same place every day, washing the dishes by hand has been more calming and meaningful than I could have ever imagined. For about 15 minutes every day, I can slow down and forget everything in the world as my mind, eyes and hands focus on (专注于) a simple task that would always result in success. Now I’m able to get myself out of all my worries and put myself more wholeheartedly into enjoying the simple task.
53.Why did the writer do the dishes at the beginning?
A.Because he had a hard life.
B.Because the dishwasher broke.
C.Because his father asked him to do it.

C.To show when he washes dishes by hand.
D.To tell what he’s learnt from washing the dishes.

Missing Leo isn’t your only problem, or you would bark all the time. What are you trying to say, Lucky?” Suddenly, I remembered that I used to see him and Leo playing in their yard every day when I’d get off the bus. “You’re used to chasing (追赶) that ball, aren’t you? You used to do that every afternoon. You want to play!” But Leo was at college, and his mom couldn’t come home early every day. “Poor Lucky,” I said. Maybe they could hire (雇佣) someone, I thought. Passage 6
“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation (回声). It was just standing there, with Father standing on one side, and I on the other side.
I suddenly realized that iron door that I have imagined between us did not exist at all. Love—it is second to none.

Passage 7

Haili Smith, 16, says she and her sister, Brooke, “have very different tastes in books.” Haili likes horror stories. Brooke, 13, prefers fantasy. What they both believe is that kids would like to read more if they are connected with a book’s characters (人物). That’s why, in 2020, they started Books Like Me. The group donates (捐赠) culturally different children’s books to schools.
“We didn’t really like reading a few years ago”, Haili told TIME for Kids. “Then we started to look for books that had characters we saw ourselves in. It made us want to read more. We thought we could share that with students, because we knew that this wasn’t something that changed us only.”
Haili and Brooke started with an Amazon Wish List of books they liked. They shared the list on social media, asking for donations of these titles. Soon, they began receiving boxes of new books to give away to schools. Also, requests have come in from schools nationwide. So far, Haili and Brooke have given away more than 16,000 books.
Anitra Carter teaches fourth grade at a primary school in Florida. She says donations from Books Like Me have gotten her students more interested in reading. “It excites them when seeing a character that may represent (代表;象征) them or look similar to them,” Carter says.
Over the years, Haili and Brooke have been invited to speak with educators about the importance of culturally diverse books. They’ve also taken books directly to students. At a book fair in Florida, “I was at a table showing kids the books and they were picking them out,” Haili recalls. “They all looked so happy when they found a book that really connected with them.”

Passage 9
Chip was in first grade when I arrived at his school as a counselor (辅导员). It was shocking to me that he was described as an angry, uncontrollable and evil (惹人厌的) boy. How could such a little boy, after being in school only one year, be considered “evil”?
As I was speaking to him, his whole body came to rest on my right hand next to his heart. It was a moment in time unlike anything I had experienced before. From then on, I’m pleased to see his behavior improved through the rest of school years.

So don’t wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody’s life. If you have something to give, give it now. ▲, but every day gives us a chance to influence (影响) one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.

Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, and he could tell by his father’s voice that it couldn’t be changed. He slowly put the bass into the water.
That was 34 years ago. And he has never again caught such a beautiful fish as the one he did that night long ago. But he does see the fish again and again--every time he faces a question of ethics (道德准则). As his father taught him, ethics are simple matters of right and wrong, but the practice of doing right is difficult.

D.To tell what he’s learnt from washing the dishes.
