As students draw near the midterm season, so do their feelings of anxiety and stress. With deadlines approaching, it’s easy to become wrapped up in essays and exams, but Arthur Lyhne-Gold, a student at the University of Edinburgh, found the poems may be the means to calm that stress.
His idea blossomed from the concept of “the Poetry Pharmacy (药房)”, which was a shop that, instead of offering pills or prescriptions, gave customers books of poetry to solve their own problems. Calm, comfort, inspiration: whatever they were searching for, there was always a poem to help them find it.
Arthur brought this concept to campus, handing out 400 free poems with various themes to brighten the day of students. Students could always find him giving out poems outside the Main Library, especially when the midterms and Edinburgh winters got them down.
His project was rooted in personal struggles. During a study abroad year in Canada, he battled loneliness and seasonal depression. Arthur said, “I tried medical recommendations like light therapy but they weren’t as helpful. Instead, I found so much comfort in some songs, some literature, and some poetry.” He then began to hang posters around campus with poems relating to the theme of seasonal depression and decided to expand on the idea of “the Poetry Pharmacy”, when he came back to the University of Edinburgh.
While many discuss studies in arts as less useful as those in science, Arthur argues for the unique value of arts and poems. He explains that, “there is a tendency in Western medicine to compartmentalise things: You have a cardiologist (心脏病医生) for heart diseases, a dentist for tooth problems, but never someone looking comprehensively.” On the contrary, as he claims, arts can arrange all the things and words to bring peace to people and cure their body as a whole. “In a way, poetry is medicine.”
4. Who was “the Poetry Pharmacy” originally intended for?
A. Book lovers searching for themed poems.
B. Students anxious about essays and exams.
C. People struggling with personal problems.
D. Patients seeking free medical consultations.
5. What motivated Arthur to start his project?
A. His academic struggles in Edinburgh. B. His emotional issues in Canada.
C. His doctor’s medical recommendation. D. His experience in the Poetry Pharmacy.
6. What does the underlined word “compartmentalise” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Handle. B. Combine. C. Simplify. D. Divide.
7. What can be inferred about Arthur’s project from the passage?
A. It received official support from the university library.
B. It proved poems are better than medicine for treating stress.
C. It originated from his own belief in the power of poetry.
D. It aimed to change the university’s focus on science courses.
C
“Funny or die” has a whole new meaning, thanks to a study published in April in a medical journal. Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infection. Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study on the connection between the sense of humor and death among 53,556 women and men in their country. The team studied the influence of humor on people’s way of thinking, social skills and emotion development, and examined death from different conditions: heart problems, infection and other health problems.
The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the risk of death from infection — those with high humor scores had a 74 percent reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sex differences could be due to a small decrease in humor scores as the men aged. No connection was found for the influence of humor on social skills and emotion development.
“The humorous way of thinking plays an important role in people’s personality and may influence the way people cope with everyday life,” said study co-researcher Sven Svebak. “In this way, it may help reduce fighting in daily life, preventing the build-up of stress.” Although the sense of humor is a natural characteristic, it can also be developed through social activities.
“I expect that children whose parents have no sense of humor when facing challenges are less likely to develop their sense of humor to cope with everyday life when they grow up,” Sven Svebak said. “But if you had a humorless childhood, never fear — studies show people can learn to be humorous at any age.”
8. According to the study, what is the relationship between humor and death risk for women with heart problems?
A. Humor has no significant effect on their death risk.
B. Humor reduces their death risk by nearly three-quarters.
C. Humor increases their life expectancy only if they are not ill.
D. Humor helps men more than women in reducing death risk.
9. What led to the gender difference in the humor-infection death link?
A. Men have poor memories as they age.
B. Men have weaker abilities to fight disease.
C. Men become less humorous as they grow older.
D. Men take part in fewer social activities as they age.
10. What can we infer from Sven Svebak?
A. Engaging in social activities can cure infections.
B. A sense of humor is an inborn quality that is unchangeable.
C. Parents’ way of dealing with difficulties influences their children’s.
D. The lack of humor makes it difficult for people to deal with stress in life.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Track Humor, Ease Pain B. Worry Little, Live Better
C. Develop Humor, Reduce Stress D. Laugh Lots, Live Longer
D
The wonderful multiple-award winning producer, writer, and director Norman Lear, who is 100, was recently interviewed by a TV host, who asked him what advice he would give to younger people as a successful man. Without missing a beat, Lear said, “Learn to let things that bother you go.”
Those few words are some of the most powerful in the world. I know that if people could just learn to do it, murder and divorce rates would fall dramatically, and I would be out of a job.
Learning to let go of what bothers you is a dream for many people, each of us has our own personal demons (魔鬼)to fight. The big question is: how do you let go of them? There is no one solution that works for everyone, because we’re all different. Psychotherapy (心理疗法)may help some people who hold on to negative thoughts, while others don’t respond to such treatments.
Even after you’ve worked on this, you may have to deal with the after effects of a traumatic (痛苦的)experience. It’s hard to forget, for example, that you lost your beloved dog. Truly letting go means not forgetting what happened but rather learning to live with it, because no one can completely forget their past and it’s no use avoiding the unfortunate past. But each day is a chance to start anew.
Elvira, an actress, was disturbed by PTSD, a mental disorder. Medication didn’t help. She got counseling from some good people and did her own work, but she would still wake up in a state of anxiety every morning. When we started working together, I asked her to imagine, as often as she could, that the discomfort she was feeling was the negativity leaving her body. Whenever a negative thought entered her mind, she would repeat this visualization exercise and would soon begin to feel okay again.
Learning to let go of things that bother you frees you from the feeling that you don’t deserve good things coming your way. It takes effort, but it’s worthwhile.
12. What advice did Norman Lear share with younger people?
A. Being professional in various fields. B. Being enthusiastic about one’s life.
C. Having an optimistic attitude to bad things. D. Showing great love and caring for others.
13. What message is conveyed in Paragranh.3?
A. Annoying dreams share certain similarities.
B. Strategies for letting go vary between individuals.
C. It’s necessary for us to let go of negative thoughts.
D. It’s useful for us to receive psychological treatments.
14. What may the author encourage those bothered by traumatic experiences to do?
A. Avoid things related to past traumas.
B. Move onward together with bad memories.
C. Try to remember unpleasant experiences.
D. Mark the boundary between the present and the past.
15. What does the author try to explain by mentioning Elvira?
A. The technique for battling against anxiety.
B. The process of having mental disorders.
C. The way that mental disorders affect people’s life.
D. The reason why actresses are likely to suffer mental disorders.

Take a Thought Walk
Have you ever considered when you get your best ideas? Or what you’re doing when the solution to a problem pops into your head? ____16____ But it could also be doing something unrelated, like taking a shower or washing the dishes. The best ideas can land when you least expect them — but there are things you can do to help them along, and that’s where walking comes in. Even a quick walk can reduce stress, clarify thinking or give your creativity a boost. Here’s why you should put your best foot forward.
____17____ Michelle, a 21-year-old university student, discovered walking as a teen when she was going through a tough period of stress. “My mum loves walking, so it was her who first suggested I go out for a walk,” she remembers. “Within about 10 minutes it made me feel so much better.”
The benefit of walking goes beyond calming — it opens mental capacity. Gillian Mills, a high school teacher with 20 years of classroom experience, explains, “When students feel too stressed to think straight, we often suggest a walk outside. ____18____ Just picture stress like a balloon blowing up. It fills with air and pressure builds. Walking and taking big breaths of fresh air are like gently letting the pressure out...”
____19____ It holds partial focus, letting you notice your surroundings while your mind wanders in new directions. Whether you’re revising for an exam, feeling stuck on a school project or working through a friendship problem, going for a walk could help.
Stanford University confirms this effect. They found a clear link between walking and creative thinking. ____20____ This suggests that it increases what the experts call “divergent thinking” — the process where the mind generates a wide range of possible ideas or solutions to a problem.
A. It helps clear your head for new thoughts.
B. Many experts believe walking improves mental health.
C. Some people find their best ideas come when relaxing quietly.
D. Critically, walking occupies just enough attention, but not all.
E. Evidence for walking’s calming power comes from lived experience.
F. It might be sitting at your desk in school or working at a computer.
G. Participants in a study increased their brainstorming by 60% during/after walks.

第五题读后续写(满分15分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写最后一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a typical busy noon at the downtown fast-food spot. The smell of sizzling patties (滋滋作响的肉饼) and crispy fries lingered (弥漫) in the air, and the place was packed with folks rushing to grab a quick meal. I’d just gotten off a long morning at work, and my stomach was empty as I finally reached the front of the line and got my order-a burger, fries, and a cold drink.
As I set the tray (托盘) down on a small table by the window, I glanced over and saw two firefighters in the corner. Their uniforms were heavy with faint spots, like they’d just stepped away from a smoky scene, and their boots were still wet from the morning dew (露水). They stood in the back of the line, shoulders relaxed but eyes tired.
I was just about to pick up my burger — the cheese melted perfectly — when a loud, sharp siren (警报) cut through the noise of the restaurant. The two firefighters froze for half a second, and then moved. No hesitation, no exchange of words — just muscle memory. One grabbed his helmet off the nearby counter, the other adjusted his radio on his shoulder, and they turned toward the door, their steps quickening. I watched them go, and my fork paused mid-air.
My empty stomach served as a quiet reminder of how long I’d waited for this meal. I’d stood in that line for 15 minutes, my feet aching from the morning’s work. Giving them my lunch meant I would have to wait again — maybe another line, maybe my break slipping away faster. I bit my lip, staring at the tray. Then I thought of their uniforms, the spots, the way they’d act upon hearing the siren (警笛) like it was a call they couldn’t ignore. They didn’t get to pause for a meal when emergencies hit. They’d probably go hours without eating, running from one call to the next.
My hesitation melted away. I grabbed the tray and hurried after the two firefighters, calling out softly, “Excuse me!” They paused at the door, turning with slight surprise. I held out the tray, smiling, “You guys must be in a rush — take this. It’s not much, but it’ll keep you going.” One of them hesitated for a second, then nodded gratefully, taking the tray. “Thank you, really,” he said, before they rushed out into the street, the siren growing louder as they went. I stood there for a moment, my stomach still growling, but my chest felt light.

【答案】4. C 5. B 6. D 7. C

根据第二段中“His idea blossomed from the concept of “the Poetry Pharmacy (药房)”, which was a shop that, instead of offering pills or prescriptions, gave customers books of poetry to solve their own problems.(他的想法源于“诗歌药房”的概念,这是一个商店,不提供药丸或处方,而是给顾客提供诗集,以解决他们自己的问题。)”可知,“诗歌药房”最初的目标人群是为个人问题而挣扎的人们。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“His project was rooted in personal struggles. During a study abroad year in Canada, he battled loneliness and seasonal depression.(他的计划源于个人的奋斗。在加拿大留学的一年里,他与孤独和季节性抑郁症作斗争。)”可知,在加拿大留学期间的情绪问题促使Arthur启动这个项目。故选B。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文“You have a cardiologist (心脏病医生) for heart diseases, a dentist for tooth problems, but never someone looking comprehensively.(心脏病找心脏病医生,牙齿问题找牙医,但从来没有人进行全面综合的考量。)”可知,心脏病专家、牙医各司其职,但不提供全面的健康检查,因此此处指西医“分科而治”的特点,画线词意思是“划分”,与Divide意思一致。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Arthur said, “I tried medical recommendations like light therapy but they weren’t as helpful. Instead, I found so much comfort in some songs, some literature, and some poetry.” He then began to hang posters around campus with poems relating to the theme of seasonal depression and decided to expand on the idea of “the Poetry Pharmacy”, when he came back to the University of Edinburgh.(Arthur说:“我尝试了一些医学建议,比如光疗,但效果不太好。相反,我在一些歌曲、文学作品和诗歌中找到了很多安慰。”然后,他开始在校园里张贴与季节性抑郁症主题有关的诗歌海报,并决定在回到爱丁堡大学后扩展“诗歌药房”的想法。)”可知,亚瑟的计划源于他对诗歌力量的信念。故选C。

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. D

【11题详解】
主旨大意题。文章开篇即点明研究核心:“Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infection. Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.(研究发现,幽默感强的女性即使生病也能活得更久,尤其是那些有心脏病和传染病的女性。快乐的男人似乎能抵御感染)”,后文围绕 幽默感与长寿/降低死亡风险展开,核心是幽默与长寿的关联。D项“多欢笑,更长寿”准确概括主旨,可以作为本文最佳标题。故选D。

【答案】12. C 13. B 14. B 15. A

Psychotherapy (心理疗法)may help some people who hold on to negative thoughts, while others don’t respond to such treatments.(没有一种解决方案适用于所有人,因为我们都是不同的。
根据文章第四段中“Truly letting go means not forgetting what happened but rather leading to live with it. because no one can completely forget their past and it’s no use avoiding the unfortunate past. (真正的放手意味着不忘记发生的事情,而是带着它生活,因为没有人能完全忘记他们的过去,逃避不幸的过去是没有用的)”可知,作者鼓励带着过去不好的记忆继续生活,因为逃避或刻意遗忘是没有用的。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段中“Whenever a negative thought entered her mind, she would repeat this visualization exercise and would soon begin to feel okay again.(每当一个消极的想法进入她的脑海,她就会重复这个想象练习,很快就会感觉好起来)”的总结可知,Elvira使用了作者教给她的“想象练习”方法处理“焦虑”和“消极”,达到了一定的效果。由此可推知,这里提出Elvira的案例是为了证明一个对抗焦虑的有效方法。故选A项。

【答案】16. F 17. E 18. A 19. D 20. G

It fills with air and pressure builds.(想象一下压力就像一个气球在不断膨胀。它不断充气,压力也随之增大)”可知,此处强调散步帮助释放压力,理清思路的作用,A选项“它有助于让你的头脑清醒,从而产生新的想法”符合语境。故选A。

【20题详解】
由上文“Stanford University confirms this effect. They found a clear link between walking and creative thinking.(斯坦福大学证实了这一现象。他们发现步行与创造性思维之间存在着明确的关联)”和下文“This suggests that it increases what the experts call “divergent thinking” — the process where the mind generates a wide range of possible ideas or solutions to a problem.(这表明,它能够增强专家们所说的“发散性思维”——即大脑在处理问题时能够产生大量可能的想法或解决方案的过程)”可知,此处需具体说明散步对创造性思维的作用,选项G“在一项研究中,参与者在散步期间/之后的头脑风暴次数增加了60%”中的“brainstorming”与下文的“divergent thinking”(发散思维)同义,直接对应研究发现。故选G。

注意:
1.续写词数应为80词左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
