As I walked into my new high school for the first time, I felt uncertain, nervous and lonely. I missed my old friends terribly. My head hurt with the thought of making new friends all over again.
What will my new friends be like? Will we like each other? Will I even make a friend? These questions were on my mind as I walked over to a group of girls.
I didn’t know anyone in my new school. It seemed like everyone was watching me, as if every head was turning towards me, waiting for me to make a wrong move.
I nervously said “hi” in a low voice, waving my hand at the group. Expecting them to start laughing and making fun of me, I was surprised when they waved back and asked me to sit with them.
As if a switch had been turned off, all the anxious thoughts that had been killing me were gone. A feeling of acceptance and excitement rushed over me as I happily chatted with the six girls, telling them more about myself.
Looking back at how anxious I was upon entering my new school for the first time, I now feel stupid for I had been losing my sleep over something so small. Being myself and being polite had worked out for me just fine. Being confident proved to be the key that fit perfectly into the lock on the door of friendship, the same door that I had been too scared to even knock on before.
I had never expected that by the end of the day I would have any friends at all, let alone six. What I learned from my experience was to welcome everyday surprises with open arms and to accept the good or bad feelings that fill our hearts, the same place where love lives and where new friends are welcomed.

A. Every dog has his day
B. Every bean has its black
C. Each new day holds a surprise
D. Each one thinks in his own way

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Researchers said in the study some of the results were expected. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标)of mental health. as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
8. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study?
A. Talking about their lifestyles.
B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale.
D. Answering questions about screen time use.
9 What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
10. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
11. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
D
Some people will say that you can place a value on anything. We may know the price of milk. We can also find out the value of the most expensive building in the world. Do you think it is possible to put a price on the Earth or other planets?
You probably think this is impossible. Scientist Greg Laughlin thought differently. In March 2009, NASA sent the Kepler telescope (望远镜) into space to explore the Milky Way galaxy and to find Earth-sized planets orbiting (环绕) other stars. As there are billions of stars within the Milky Way, it could mean there were several thousand planets to discover. How could scientists decide which ones to study further and which ones to take no notice of?
Professor Laughlin used information received from the Kepler telescope to create a formula (公式) that puts a price on planets. The age and size of each planet, its temperature, and the energy (能量) it created were considered. Older planets were given a higher value. The most important consideration was whether or not it may be possible for life to live on the planet.
By using his formula, Professor Laughlin found that planet Earth was the most important. He gave it a value of five quadrillion (千的五次幂) dollars. Mars was given a value of US$16,500 and Venus was valued at zero. That’s because it’s impossible to support life on Venus because it is too close to the Sun. The professor said that any planet that had a value of more than US$100 million was worth studying further.
By November 2018, about 1,200 planets in total had been looked at. Most of them were worthless because of their unsatisfactory conditions. So should you run to the bank and borrow US$16,500 so you can buy Mars? Maybe not today. You should just enjoy the five quadrillion dollar planet you already live on — and learn how to look after it.
12. What purpose does the first paragraph serve?
A. To describe the prices of different things.
B. To bring up the topic of values of planets.
C. To introduce a scientific question.
D. To show a research result.
13. What part of Laughlin’s formula carries the most value?
A. A planet’s temperature.
B. A planet’s age and size.
C. The amount of energy a planet creates.
D. The possibility for life to live on a planet.
14. What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Venus was valueless.
B. Venus is too close to the Sun.
C. Mars was much cheaper than Earth.
D. A planet was usually valued at over US$100 million.
15. What does the writer expect people to do in the last paragraph?
A. To study space science. B. To protect and love Earth.
C. To save money to travel in space. D. To support scientific organizations.

There were once two boys who were very good friends. Their names were Arman and Batoor. Arman and Batoor would always play together after school on the basketball court close to where they lived.
One day, two bullies came to the basketball court, and one of the bullies stole their basketball. “This is ours now,” said a bully.
“And you are never getting it back,” said the other bully.
Then the bullies started pushing the two boys and Arman fell down and suddenly became very frightened. Without thinking, the young boy jumped to his feet and ran home without once looking back to see if his friend Batoor was also able to run away.
But Batoor was not so lucky, and anyway, he did not like being bullied and refused to run away. But the boys were bigger and stronger than Batoor and they hit him and kicked him.
“That will teach you,” said the bullies. And with that, the bullies walked away, leaving poor Batoor to walk home alone.
The next day, when Arman met Batoor in the playground at school, he was very sorry when he saw what the bullies had done to his good friend.
“I cannot believe you ran away and left me all alone!” said Batoor. “What kind of a friend acts like that?” Although Arman tried to apologise, Batoor was very angry and did not want to forgive his friend.
Arman felt terrible about running away, and now he had lost his best friend because of his actions.
Batoor’s mother bought him a new basketball, and because the boy decided not to have his life ruled over by bullies, he returned to the basketball court the following day and played alone.
Just as he was practising, he heard a voice behind him.
“I see we are going to have to teach you another lesson,” said the voice. “And I see that you have another basketball for us to take,” said the other.
And when Batoor turned around, sure enough, the two bullies were walking towards him. “Now hand over that basketball and we won’t beat you so badly this time.”
Just as Batoor was about to protest, another voice rang out loud and clear across the basketball court.

As I walked into my new high school for the first time, I felt uncertain, nervous and lonely. I missed my old friends terribly. My head hurt with the thought of making new friends all over again.
What will my new friends be like? Will we like each other? Will I even make a friend? These questions were on my mind, as I walked over to a group of girls.

6. What advice might the author give to new high school students?
A. Get enough sleep.
B. Keep in touch with old friends.

7. What is the best title for the text?

根据文章第一段“As I walked into my new high school for the first time, I felt uncertain, nervous and lonely. I missed my old friends terribly. My head hurt with the thought of making new friends all over again.(当我第一次走进我的新高中时,我感到不确定、紧张和孤独。我非常想念我的老朋友们。一想到要重新结交新朋友,我就头疼)”和文章第二段“What will my new friends be like? Will we like each other? Will I even make a friend? These questions were on my mind, as I walked over to a group of girls.(我的新朋友会是什么样子?我们会喜欢对方吗?我能交到朋友吗?当我走向一群女孩时,这些问题一直在我脑海中盘旋)”可知作者第一次进新高中时,对于即将要重新结交朋友而感到焦虑,因为他不知道新朋友会是什么样子的,也不知道会不会交到朋友,所以在第二段提出这些问题显示了作者的焦虑;故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“I nervously said “hi” in a low voice, waving my hand at the group. Expecting them to start laughing and making fun of me, I was surprised when they waved back and asked me to sit with them.(我紧张地低声说了“hi”,向大家挥了挥手。

C“Each new day holds a surprise(每一天都有惊喜)”适合作为本文标题;故选C项。

9. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
C 9. D 10. B 11. B

根据第三段中“Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators of mental health. as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.(比如,没有课后活动的学生们经常会有更长的时间面对屏幕。
根据最后一段中“While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.(尽管以前的研究已经证明课后活动对社会和学术发展的重要性,而现在的研究强调了它们对于好的心理健康结果的重要性)”可知,新的研究表明,课后活动对提高青少年的心理健康很重要。故选B。

B To bring up the topic of values of planets.
B 13. D 14. A 15. B

“____ senior high school life is like”是宾语从句,从句缺少宾语,表示“高中生活是什么样的”,用连接代词what引导从句。故填what。
故填be developed。
have confidence in... 故填in。
“(realize) your potential fully”是“to make the most of our school resources”的目的,用不定式作目的状语;句首单词首字母大写。故填To realize。
这是一个完全倒装句,系动词be作谓语,讲述客观事实,用一般现在时态,主语“good study habits, useful skills and a positive attitude”是并列的名词词组,是复数概念,谓语用复数形式are。故填are。
故填As。
“(make) a ____ (continue) effort to train your mind and develop your character”作主语,用动名词making作主语,句首单词首字母大写。

I’m Li Hua, in charge of our school’s newly-launched English Corner. I’m writing to sincerely invite you to be our resident special guest, as your guidance will greatly help students improve their English.
The English Corner is set up to provide a free platform where students can practice oral English, since many of them lack chances to speak English in daily life. Your main work will include giving a 15-minute weekly speech on interesting topics and helping correct students’ pronunciation when they communicate.
We would be grateful if you could accept our invitation. Please let me know your decision at your earliest convenience.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
“Get away from my friend,” called Arman.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Batoor thanked his friend and forgave him for running away.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “Get away from my friend,” called Arman. This time Arman didn’t run away. He bravely shouted at the bully. The two bullies came at him, but he did not flinch and positively defended his good friend. He argued with the two bullies, but they didn’t listen. Instead, they struggled with Arman. By this time many other students came, as well as their teachers. Together, they sent the two bullies to the school peace room.
Batoor thanked his friend and forgave him for running away. Arman apologizes to Batoor for his last escape, and Batoor forgives Arman for his best friend’s rescue. They became good friends again. They believe that when confronted with bullies, they cann’t choose to run away from them, but to fight evil. Positive energy will always compete with winning energy. Good will prevail over evil.
