“That day started all wrong,” LaQuista Erinna said. “And we forgot his headphones. We were running late, traffic was horrible, so I knew it was going to be difficult that day.”
When Erinna and her son finally arrived at the place, it seemed like there was no way 6-year-old Jackson, a boy with autism (自闭症), would be getting his hair cut.
“He just got anxious right away,” Erinna explained. “Usually I have to encourage him a lot to get him in the chair. He will put on his headphones, and we power through.”
Erinna said Jackson is a typical little boy who loves to play and loves art. But some tasks can make him feel very uncomfortable and nervous, and haircuts are one of them.
The stress was so great that Jackson didn’t get another haircut for almost two years. But this time, the barber (理发师), Ree, made things easier.
Noticing his Super Mario Bros shirt, Ree told him he needed to “save Mario” by making sure no hair got on him. She cut his hair while he moved around the shop. She kept talking to him, encouraging him and reminding him to protect Mario.
“It touched me so much,” Erinna said. “She built a relationship and gained his trust.”
“I feel good I can go above and beyond for a child,” Ree said. “I know children want to be free. They want to express themselves so I try to find a different strategy to make them feel comfortable.”
Jackson’s smile told the rest of the story.
Erinna shared a video of the haircut online, which got millions of views. She also set up a GoFundMe to support Ree to make sure she’s able to continue to work and make up for any lost income from the influence of Covid-19.
4. What usually helps to calm Jackson during haircuts?
A. His mother’s trust. B. His art books.
C. His barber’s encouragement. D. His headphones.
5. Why did Ree tell Jackson he needed to “save Mario”?
A. To keep Jackson focused on a game-like task.
B. To show Jackson her own love for video games.
C. To teach Jackson the importance of helping others.
D. To encourage Jackson to become a barber in the future.
6. What did Erinna do to express her thanks to Ree?
A. She raised money to help her.
B. She advertised her skills.
C. She got haircuts at her shop regularly.
D. She put photos of the haircut online.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Ree?
A. Kind and honest. B. Caring and generous.
C. Patient and creative. D. Confident and friendly.

The feeling against tourism has been spreading in Europe over the past few months. In Barcelona, Spain, locals used water guns on tourists. In Paris, France, workers at the Louvre Museum stopped working in June and did not let visitors in.
Many European cities are dealing with huge numbers of tourists. Amsterdam, which has 1 million people, had over 20 million visitors in 2023. Rome, home to 4.3 million, sees about 22 million tourists each year.
Part of the problem is social media. Apps like Instagram and TikTok have made certain places super popular and crowded. And some popular posts (帖子) create quick demand, leading to short visits that focus on taking photos instead of experiencing culture. Also, AI algorithms in travel apps make planning more similar, sending the crowd to the same attractions at the same time.
Such crowding has caused housing problems. Many locals can’t find homes to rent because owners prefer short-term visitors. In Spain, home prices have gone up 85% in ten years. “Tourism has become such a big part of the economy that locals feel like they are no longer important,” said Xavier Font, a researcher at the UK’s University of Surrey.
The environmental effect is another factor. In 2024, three Cyclades islands in Greece were listed as endangered sites in Europe because of too many tourists. On top of that, bad tourist behavior, like leaving graffiti (涂鸦), makes the problems worse.
Governments are trying various solutions. For example, Greece’s Santorini only allows 8,000 cruise visitors per day, down from around 17,000. Barcelona plans to stop holiday apartment rentals by 2028.
8. How does the author begin the passage?
A By predicting the future of European tourism.
B. By explaining why people are against tourism.
C. By studying tourist behavior in different cities.
D. By using examples and facts to show a problem.
9. How do social media apps cause the tourism problem?
A. They offer travel discounts.
B. They provide false information.
C. They make tourism less meaningful.
D. They guide visitors to the same places.
10. What is Xavier Font’s attitude toward the present tourism situation?
A. Supportive. B. Uninterested. C. Worried. D. Understanding.
11. Which is the best title for the article?
A. Social Media’s Role in Overtourism B. Overtourism in Europe
C. Housing Problems in European Cities D. Tourist Rules in Greece
D
You spend about a third of your life asleep, and part of that time is spent dreaming. Yet most dreams are quickly forgotten. While the exact reason isn’t fully understood, scientists have gained insights into how memory works during sleep, offering explanations for our forgetfulness.
One idea centers on the hippocampus (海马体), the brain area that helps move short-term memory into long-term memory. Not all brain areas fall asleep at the same time. Studies show the hippocampus is one of the last areas to shut down. “If the hippocampus is the last to go to sleep, it could very well be the last to wake up,” said Thomas Andrillon, a neuroscientist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. This could explain why dream memories are so fleeting — our hippocampus hasn’t fully woken up when we open our eyes and it isn’t ready to move short-term memory into long-term memory, so the dreams slowly disappear before you can hold on to them.
Another explanation is that many dreams are simply unimportant. Just as you probably don’t remember your thoughts while brushing your teeth, ordinary dreams may be forgotten by the brain as too unimportant. However, lively, emotional, or well-structured dreams are more likely to be remembered.
If you want to improve dream recall, there are a few strategies to try. Drinking water before bed can cause you to wake up during the night. These middle-of-the-night awakenings are frequently accompanied by dream recall. Repeatedly reminding yourself that you want to remember your dreams or keeping a dream journal may also help. Upon waking, stay still with your eyes closed and replay the dream in your mind. This pause gives your hippocampus time to strengthen the weak memory before it disappears.
12. Why is the hippocampus mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To show it is the first brain area to go to sleep.
B. To explain why people often forget their dreams.
C. To introduce the main cause of people’s daydreaming.
D. To prove it is useless for processing short-term memory.
13. What does the underlined word “fleeting” probably mean?
A. Inactive. B. Short-lived. C. Important. D. Little.
14. What kind of dreams are most likely to stay in memory?
A. Active dreams that have strong feelings.
B. Ordinary dreams that are like daily thoughts.
C. Morning dreams that happen right before getting up.
D. Interesting dreams that quickly flash through the mind.
15. Which of the following can help you to recall a dream?
A. Drinking coffee before going to sleep.
B. Keeping a journal to plan your dreams.
C. Thinking back on your dreams right after waking up.
D. Reminding yourself of the need for midnight awakenings.
