Last month, 25 of our association members from our town spent a weekend in Colmar. Our hosts arranged a great program. We learned how cheese is produced in the region and had the chance to taste the products. The theme park trip was cancelled, but we all had a great time on the final boat trip down the river. This is a special year for the association because it’s been 25 years since it was founded. In Colmar, they’re planning to mark this by building a footbridge in the central park. We’ve been discussing what to do here and considered planting some poplar trees in the museum gardens. However, the authorities weren’t happy with that idea. Eventually, we decided to host a cultural festival. It will include a demonstration of English cookery, a concert, a football match and a film show. We’re looking forward to welcoming our French visitors here next week. Here’s the agenda for their visit ...

When was the last time you used a telephone box? I mean to make an actual phone call — not to shelter from the rain. Ages ago, right? The last time I used a phone box for its intended purpose was…2006. I was conducting auditions (试演) for my play in my tiny old shared house in London. Hoping to impress some talented actors to come and work for me for nothing, I spread some throws over the sofas and lit candles to make it seem a bit more ”young professional”.
As I rushed outdoors to empty the wastepaper baskets, the door swung shut behind me. Suddenly I was locked outside. My mobile phone was inside, but luckily there was a telephone box across the street. So, I called Directory Assistance, got put through to our landlady’s managing agent, and had a spare key sent to me with just enough time to get back in before the actors arrived.
As it has been many years since I last used one, I should hardly be surprised that then are no longer any public telephones near my house. The last one standing has just been turn into a “mini community library”: any passer-by can “borrow” a book from its shelves return it later, or replace it with another title from their own collection.
For a few months after the “library” opened, I didn’t bother taking a look, as I had assumed that it would be stuffed full of cheese love stories. Then I noticed folk conducting spring cleans dropping boxes of voluminous books on various subjects there. And these books were free. This unbeatable price-point encouraged me to experiment with dozens of titles that I would never normally consider buying. And I’ve discovered some great books!
If I ever get trapped outside my house again, my local telephone box will, sadly no longer be able to connect me with my keys. But it can certainly keep me entertained while I wait for my wife to rescue me.
24. What does the underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refer to?
A. The play. B. The shared house.
C. The sofa. D. The telephone box.
25. Why did the author use the telephone box in 2006?
A. To place an urgent call. B. To put up a notice.
C. To shelter from the rain. D. To hold an audition.
26. What do we know about the “mini community library”?
A. It provides phone service for free. B. Anyone can contribute to its collection.
C. It is popular among young readers. D. Books must be returned within a month.
27. Why did the author start to use the “library”?
A. He wanted to borrow some love stories.
B. He was encouraged by a close neighbour.
C. He found there were excellent free books.
D. He thought it was an ideal place for reading.
B 25. A 26. B 27. C
根据第一段第五句“I was conducting auditions (试演) for my play in my tiny old shared house in London.(我当时在伦敦我那狭小的合租房子里为我的剧本进行试演。)”
根据第二段第四句“So, I called Directory Assistance, got put through to our landlady’s managing agent, and had a spare key sent to me with just enough time to get back in before the actors arrived.(所以,我打电话给电话查号台,接通了女房东的经纪人,他们给了我一把备用钥匙,刚好来得及在演员们到来之前回去。)” 故选A。
根据第三段第二句“The last one standing has just been turn into a “mini community library”: any passer-by can “borrow” a book from its shelves return it later, or replace it with another title from their own collection.(最后一个被改造成了一个“迷你社区图书馆”:任何路过的人都可以从它的书架上“借”书,以后还回来,或者用自己收藏的另一本书来替换。)”
根据第四段最后四句“Then I noticed fork conducting spring cleans dropping boxes of voluminous books on various subjects there. And these books were free. This unbeatable price-point encouraged me to experiment with dozens of titles that I would never normally consider buying. And I’ve discovered some great books!(然后我注意到福克正在进行春季大扫除,把各种主题的大书一箱箱地扔到那里。而且这些书是免费的。这个无与伦比的价格点鼓励我尝试许多我通常不会考虑购买的标题。我还发现了一些很棒的书!)”可知,作者发现“迷你图书馆”里有很多免费的很棒的书,所以开始使用。故选C。

Mosquito repellents (驱蚊剂) have come a long way. For decades, the market leader was DEET, which fights the insects off successfully, but only for an hour or two. Recently, Icaridin has become available. This lasts up to eight hours and is just as effective. Yet both are mildly poisonous to cells grown in culture (培养物). The search is thus on for something that is unquestionably not poisonous at all.
Francesca Dani of the University of Florence, in Italy, thinks she might have the answer. As she and her workmates describe in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, they looked at a range of chemicals called aldehydes and ketones, and produced something that seems a good, long-lasting, safe mosquito repellent.
Dr Dani knew from the scientific literature that some aldehydes and ketones have insect-repelling properties. Such chemicals, however, evaporate (蒸发) faster than DEET. But she also knew from her own work that hydroxylated cyclic acetals, which form from certain aldehydes and ketones when exposed to alcohol, evaporate much less rapidly. That, she thought, might be the key to the puzzle.
She and her workmates therefore made a score of hydroxylated cyclic acetals and tested their mosquito-repelling qualities against those of DEET and Icaridin. The standard way to do this is to spray (喷) some onto the back of a volunteer’s hand and have him or her then put both hands into a mosquito cage. The unsprayed hand acts as a control, and it is thereby possible to decide, by comparing the number of insects landing on each, how effective such a repellent is.
As expected, DEET scored 95% protection efficiency. Such protection was provided by 8.3 micrograms of the stuff being applied per square centimetre of skin, and lasted two hours. For Icaridin, a fifth of that amount produces an equal repelling effect for eight hours. To the researchers’ satisfaction, two of their hydroxylated cyclic acetals performed as well as Icaridin. And when they tested them on cell cultures, they found that one, called 12a in the paper, killed none of the cells exposed to it.
28. What is the problem with DEET?
A. It can be harmful. B. It is not effective.
C. It is eco-friendly. D. It lasts less than an hour.
29. Which of the following may play a key role in preventing evaporation?
A. Aldehydes. B. Ketones. C. Icaridin. D. Alcohol.
30. How was the test performed?
A. By comparing different repellents. B. By putting a volunteer into a cage.
C. By counting the number of dead insects. D. By spraying some repellents onto mosquitoes.
31. What conclusion can be drawn about 12a?
A. It works well even after 12 hours. B. It is a cheap alternative to Icaridin.
C. It is a promising mosquito repellent. D. It will soon be available on the market.
A 29. D 30. A 31. C
根据第一段中“Mosquito repellents (驱蚊剂) have come a long way. For decades, the market leader was DEET, which fights the insects off successfully, but only for an hour or two. Recently, Icaridin has become available. This lasts up to eight hours and is just as effective. Yet both are mildly poisonous to cells grown in culture (培养物). (驱蚊剂的发展已取得显著进步。数十年来,市场主导产品DEET,它能有效驱赶蚊虫,但时效仅一两个小时。最近,Icaridin问世,其防护时长可达八小时,且效果相当。然而,这两种成分对培养细胞均有轻微毒性。)”可知,DEET的问题在于它可能有害。故选A。
根据第三段中“But she also knew from her own work that hydroxylated cyclic acetals, which form from certain aldehydes and ketones when exposed to alcohol, evaporate much less rapidly. (但她也从自己的工作中了解到,当某些醛和酮暴露在酒精中时,会形成羟基环状缩醛,这种缩醛蒸发得要慢得多。)”可知,酒精在防止蒸发方面可能起着关键作用。故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“She and her workmates therefore made a score of hydroxylated cyclic acetals and tested their mosquito-repelling qualities against those of DEET and Icaridin. (因此,她和同事们制造了20种羟基环状缩醛,并测试了它们的驱蚊效果,与DEET和Icaridin进行了对比。)”可知,测试是通过比较不同的驱蚊剂来进行的。故选A。
根据最后一段中“And when they tested them on cell cultures, they found that one, called 12a in the paper, killed none of the cells exposed to it. (当他们在细胞培养物上测试时,他们发现其中一种,在论文中被称为12a,没有杀死任何暴露在其中的细胞。)”可知,12a 驱蚊效果好且无毒,是有前途的驱蚊剂。故选C。

In the risky world of nuclear arms control, Princeton student Lepowsky is exploring how robots can make inspections more accurate and acceptable to host nations worried about invasive (侵入的) traditional methods. His latest research has led to a robot performing inspections without saving sensitive information.
“The host nation likely won’t want a human inspector poking their nose around,” said Lepowsky. “But even a robot has memory and sensors acquiring data.” The goal is to have high-confidence inspections without the robot saving information. For example, the robot would not save radiation measurements or create floor plans of sensitive areas.
The new prototype (样机) is built on an iRobot Create 3 platform, an educational robot. Robots offer advantages over human inspectors:they can tolerate higher radiation levels, are more consistent, and can be cheaper. They also can be programmed to generate trust, such as not using cameras to avoid seeing unwanted details. The idea for the robot started with Lepowsky’s adviser, Glaser, who was curious about creating a “forgetful robot” that could perform highly accurate nuclear arms inspections but forget everything afterward. This led to an even more interesting idea: “Rather than forgetting, we’re not even remembering in the first place,” Lepowsky said. He believes this feature can reassure hosts concerned about privacy.
Lepowsky likes the interdisciplinary nature of his work — drawing on both his robotics and policy expertise — and he likes that it requires a breadth of knowledge, not just depth. He values that his research is grounded in real-life applications for global security and nuclear nonproliferation (防扩散).
Predicting when the robot might be used in the field is difficult. “It’s easy to say, today, it’s not very realistic, but you have to be ready for if and when it becomes possible,” said Lepowsky. Research into this problem is very active. Because arms control is changing, the specific objectives of future agreements are hard to predict. “But we can hope they will be positive, and we need to be ready, technically. “
32. In which aspect is Lepowsky’s robot different from human inspectors?
A. Data security. B. Memory capacity. C. Social acceptance. D. User friendliness.
33. What is said about the robot in paragraph 3?
A. Its accurate system. B. Its privacy risks.
C. Its design mechanism. D. Its operational problems.
34. What does Lepowsky like about his work?
A. Scientific research data. B. Real-time technical cooperation.
C. In-depth theoretical studies. D. Integrated knowledge across fields.
35. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. Princeton’s “Forgetful” Robots in Global Security
B. No-Memory Robots:The Future of Nuclear Checks?
C. Nuclear Arms Control:Robots or Human Inspectors?
D. Lepowsky’s “Curious” Robots for Radiation Detection
A 33. C 34. D 35. B
根据文章第二段““The host nation likely won’t want a human inspector poking their nose around,” said Lepowsky. “But even a robot has memory and sensors acquiring data.” The goal is to have high-confidence inspections without the robot saving information. For example, the robot would not save radiation measurements or create floor plans of sensitive areas.( Lepowsky说:“东道国很可能不希望人类核查员到处窥探。但即便是机器人也有会采集数据的内存和传感器。” 其目标是在机器人不保存信息的情况下进行高可信度的核查。例如,机器人不会保存辐射测量数据,也不会绘制敏感区域的平面图。)”可知,东道国不希望人类核查员到处窥探,而Lepowsky的机器人的目标是在不保存信息,如不保存辐射测量数据、不绘制敏感区域平面图的情况下进行核查。所以Lepowsky的机器人与人类核查员在数据安全方面不同。故选A。
在文章第三段中,首先提到“The new prototype (样机) is built on an iRobot Create 3 platform, an educational robot.(这款新的样机是基于教育机器人iRobot Create 3平台制造的。)” 接着阐述“Robots offer advantages over human inspectors: they can tolerate higher radiation levels, are more consistent, and can be cheaper. They also can be programmed to generate trust, such as not using cameras to avoid seeing unwanted details.(与人类核查员相比,机器人具有一些优势:它们能够承受更高的辐射水平,工作更加稳定一致,而且成本可能更低。它们还可以通过编程来赢得信任,比如不使用摄像头以避免拍摄到不必要的细节。)”介绍了机器人相较于人类核查员的优势,以及为了赢得信任所采用的编程方式,比如不使用摄像头。还提到“The idea for the robot started with Lepowsky’s adviser, Glaser, who was curious about creating a “forgetful robot” that could perform highly accurate nuclear arms inspections but forget everything afterward. This led to an even more interesting idea: “Rather than forgetting, we’re not even remembering in the first place,” Lepowsky said. He believes this feature can reassure hosts concerned about privacy.(关于这款机器人的想法最初来自Lepowsky的导师Glaser,他对制造一个能够进行高度精确的核武器核查、但事后会忘掉一切的“健忘机器人”很感兴趣。这引出了一个更有意思的想法:“我们不是让它事后忘掉,而是从一开始就不记录任何信息。” Lepowsky说。他认为这一特点可以让那些担心隐私问题的东道国放心。)” 讲述了机器人设计理念的起源以及最终确定的“从一开始就不记录信息”这一特色,这些都围绕着机器人的设计机制展开。所以关于第三段中提到的机器人,主要说的是它的设计机制。故选C。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“Lepowsky likes the interdisciplinary nature of his work — drawing on both his robotics and policy expertise — and he likes that it requires a breadth of knowledge, not just depth. He values that his research is grounded in real-life applications for global security and nuclear nonproliferation(防扩散).( Lepowsky喜欢自己工作的跨学科性质——既利用了他在机器人技术方面的专业知识,也运用了他在政策方面的专长——而且他喜欢这份工作需要广泛的知识,而不仅仅是深度的专业知识。
B“No-Memory Robots: The Future of Nuclear Checks?(无记忆机器人:核核查的未来?)”

根据上文“Imagine you buy a new shirt and do not intend to buy a new jacket. You were perfectly happy with it until you wore it with the new shirt. However, you imagine that the new shirt makes the old jacket look worn. Then you can’t help buy a new jacket or even more to better fit the shirt.”(假设你买了一件新衬衫,但不打算买一件新夹克。
根据上文“The simplest description of it is the scenario of buying something new and replacing our old possessions with items to match the new one, even if that means an empty bank account.”(最简单的描述就是买新东西,用新东西替换旧东西,即使这意味着银行账户空了。)
根据下文“A store may be having a great sale on a new outfit—but if the new outfit forces you to buy a new pair of shoes or handbag to match, it just became a more expensive purchase than originally assumed.”(一家商店的一套新衣服可能正在大减价,但如果这套新衣服迫使你去买一双新鞋或一个新手袋来搭配,那么它的购买成本就会比原先想象的要高。) 故选A项。
根据上文“You may avoid replacing those end tables at first, but eventually, at some point down the road, you are going to break down and buy new ones that better match the new couch.”(一开始你可能会避免更换那些茶几,但最终,在这条路上的某个时刻,你会让步,买一个更适合新沙发的新桌子。)根据下文“But the best way to overcome the Diderot Effect is to never allow it to overpower you in the first place.”(但克服狄德罗效应的最好方法是,从一开始就不要让它压倒你。)
根据上文“Remind yourself that possessions do not define you.”(提醒自己,财产并不能定义你。)

Dear Principal,
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Principal,
I am writing to express my heartfelt support for the two-day weekend policy, which I believe is essential for students’ long-term development.
Not only does this policy allow us to recharge physically and mentally, but it also creates space for personal growth beyond textbooks. More importantly, whether it’s reading for pleasure, exercising, or simply spending time with family, what we gain during these breaks is far more than relaxation — it’s balance, motivation, and inner peace. Without regular rest, seldom can we maintain focus, creativity, or emotional stability under academic pressure.
To make the most of weekends, I suggest organizing optional skill-building workshops on campus, such as coding or public speaking classes. Additionally, creating a “weekend activity guidebook” with museum schedules and community service opportunities would help students plan meaningful activities.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Principal,
As a dedicated advocate for students’ well-being, I am writing to support the two-day weekend policy and offer suggestions to maximize its benefits.
To begin with, adequate rest is indispensable to students, as it helps us rejuvenate and sustain productivity throughout the week. Additionally, weekends offer a rare chance to pursue personal passions, enhance social skills, and develop emotional resilience. Without sufficient downtime, hardly can students strike a balance between academic pressure and personal growth. Clearly, this policy contributes greatly to holistic development.
To better utilize weekends, I recommend adopting effective time management strategies, such as goal-setting, scheduled breaks, and engaging in intellectually and physically enriching activities.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Leadership. What does the word mean? Leadership is not just the ability to lead a team, it is a journey of selflessness. Some people are born leaders while others are not. This was how I had to start my journey
“Alright, class! We are going to work in groups to create a mind map! It needs to contain the facts we discussed during the Science Centre trip!” Mrs. Low’s voice boomed across the classroom like thunder. “This is a great opportunity for our newly appointed group leaders to prove themselves worthy of that title.”
Mrs. Low then raised one of her eyebrows with great expectations. The class burst into non-stop chattering. Rita and John glanced at me warily. I raised my head, the gleaming badge (闪耀的徽章) with the words “Team Leader” pinned proudly on my uniform.
Mrs. Low instructed the class, “Go to your seats now.” In the blink of an eye, everyone rushed back to their tables to begin their project. I took out a piece of paper and pointed to Rita, “Hey you! Make a list of the stuff that we have learned.” Rita angrily slammed her hand on the table. She complained, “Why do you have to be so bossy?” “Because I’m the leader!” I shouted back. She glared at me with anger burning in her eyes.
I turned to John, “And you! Start drawing the mind map! I want it done quickly!” John did not protest; he simply bit his lip, muttering, “Is this really leadership?”
He went on to draw the mind map while his question rang in my head and I asked myself, is this really leadership? It was as if I was standing in front of a mirror, looking at my reflection, wondering if I was proud to see how I was behaving then. “Am I right to order people around like that? Should I be more polite and less bossy?” Questions bombarded my brain until I felt it was about to explode. I closed my eyes and sighed.
Suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned my head around. It was Mrs. Low. As though she could read my mind, Mrs. Low explained, “Leadership is not just about being a leader. It is to serve others, not yourself. It is a selfless journey.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
Mrs. Low gave me a pat on the back and left.

We began working on the project as a team.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mrs. Low gave me a pat on the back and left. Reflecting on her words, they went straight into my mind and more importantly, my heart. It was as if someone had lit a light bulb in my brain, sweeping away all my confusion. She was right. Instantly I did realize that leadership was about serving, not bossing people around. Taking a deep breath and swallowing my pride, I sprang to my feet, dashed to John and Rita and apologized, “I’m sorry for my rudeness, guys. Let’s do this project in another way.” John and Rita’s annoyed expressions gave way to the widest smiles.
We began working on the project as a team. I kept reminding myself to be patient and not to order them around while giving tips, ideas and feedback. The following time witnessed our harmonious cooperation. It didn’t take long before we were done with the project. With the work, I went up to Mrs. Low and passed it to her. Upon receiving our work, she gave a satisfied nod and clapped proudly. “You’ve done well!” she commended. I laughed heartily and my heart fluttered. This experience served as a reminder to me that leadership is to serve others, not myself. Deep down, I recognized that this was just the start, the start of my lifelong selfless journey to become a true leader.

D
A Its accurate system. B. Its privacy risks.
C. Its design mechanism. D. Its operational problems.
34. What does Lepowsky like about his work?
A. Scientific research data. B. Real-time technical cooperation.
C. In-depth theoretical studies. D. Integrated knowledge across fields.
35. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. Princeton’s “Forgetful” Robots in Global Security
B. No-Memory Robots:The Future of Nuclear Checks?
C. Nuclear Arms Control:Robots or Human Inspectors?
D. Lepowsky’s “Curious” Robots for Radiation Detection

Imagine you buy a new shirt and do not intend to buy a new jacket. You were perfectly happy with it until you wore it with the new shirt. However, you imagine that the new shirt makes the old jacket look worn. Then you can’t help buy a new jacket or even more to better fit the shirt. _____36_____The simplest description of it is the scenario of buying something new and replacing our old possessions with items to match the new one, even if that means an empty bank account. _____37_____
Become aware it is happening. Observe when you are being drawn into consumption not because you are in actual need of an item, but only because something new has been introduced.
_____38_____ A store may be having a great sale on a new outfit—but if the new outfit forces you to buy a new pair of shoes or handbag to match, it just became a more expensive purchase than originally assumed.
Avoid unnecessary new purchases. Realize the Diderot Effect is a significant force and overcoming it is very difficult. You may avoid replacing those end tables at first, but eventually, at some point down the road, you are going to break down and buy new ones that better match the new couch. _____39_____ But the best way to overcome the Diderot Effect is to never allow it to overpower you in the first place.
Remind yourself that possessions do not define you. _____40_____ Your possessions do not define you or your success—no matter what marketers will try to tell you.
A. Analyze and predict the full cost of future purchases.
B. Buy things for their usefulness rather than their status.
C. We actually can employ this mind trick in the following ways.
D. The true abundance of life is not found in the things that you own.
E. Then how can we resist this pattern of unnecessary consumerism?
F. The phenomenon can be owed to the so-called “Diderot Effect”.
G. There are times when we have a proper need to buy new things, admittedly.

注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
Mrs. Low gave me a pat on the back and left.
