Blists Hill Victorian Town, Shropshire Visitors to this Victorian town could happily wave goodbye to their smartphones, cars and almost any modern convenience. Walk through the gates and enjoy the smell of freshly baked bread and carbolic soap, hear the sounds of steam engines, a horse and cart. November and December are the perfect months to visit, as the town lays on its annual Christmas celebrations. The Workhouse, Southwell, Nottinghamshire Experience the life inside without enduring the punishing conditions, with a tour of the best-preserved workhouse in Britain, serving as a place of labour. Life here for Victorian Britain's poorest was incredibly tough, with the 160 inmates spending their days pulling rope apart by hand or turning the mill, but today it's a peaceful site and an abundant vegetable crop, with heritage varieties. Grand Hotel, Scarborough, North Yorkshire The hotel was built in the peak of this domestic train tourism boom. In 1845 the town was linked to York by rail, a development that brought a flood of holidaymakers. When it opened, it was one of the largest in Europe. Visitors can still book in at the hotel today and enjoy the same traditional seaside pastimes as their ancestors — watching Punch and Judy shows, eating ice creams or riding along the coastal path on donkeys. Tower Ballroom, Blackpool Another immensely popular Victorian seaside town, Blackpool, received a sudden increase in visitors following the erection of the Blackpool Tower in 1894. In 1899, the Tower Ballroom was opened, designed to rival the nearby Empress Ballroom. The specially designed dancefloor attracted dancers from all over the world, and even the most working-class locals could experience a night of luxury. Today, visitors still flood to dance in its grand interior or enjoy afternoon tea under the dreamy painted ceiling. 1. What may you see if you visit Blists Hill Victorian Town? A. A phone shop. B. A coffee bar. C. A steam train. D. A net bar. 2. What is The Workhouse, Southwell used as now? A. A school. B. A factory. C. A museum. D. An attraction. 3. What do Grand Hotel and Tower Ballroom have in common? A. By the sea. B. Go in a taxi. C. Amusement buildings. D. Enjoy performances. 1. C 2. D 3. The GGW is an ecological restoration project designed by African people for African people. Heavy rains, droughts, wildfires and landslides have all become common throughout the world. But nowhere is quite like the Sahel. In this huge African region, climate change has materialized in a dramatic manner. In some cases, the severe conditions have left people with no option other than to migrate elsewhere to survive. It was with all of this in mind that the extraordinary, but heavily debated project was first put forward. Fourteen years have passed since the initiative formally kicked off. The stated goal was to create a 15-kilometre-wide, 8, 000-kilometre-long green belt of trees and other plants that, by 2030, would span(跨越)the entire width of the Sahel, from Senegal to Djibouti. Overall, 100 million hectares(公顷)of land would be restored by 2030. Once completed, it was announced, the wall could end up capturing(俘获)250 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, while its creation and upkeep could create ten million jobs in rural areas. Looking at the project as a whole, there’s still a long way to go. According to a status report by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, about four million hectares of degraded land have been restored. This means that progress towards the 100 million hectares target stands at just four per cent. “When we started restoring the soil, we realized the area at risk was much wider than we initially thought,” explains Elvis Paul Tangem, the African Union’s GGW coordinator. “We had few funds to push the initiative as much as we wanted to. There was skepticism among investors, who didn’t understand the project, but also among the African states themselves, which needed time to figure out if the GGW was a priority.” 8. What is the purpose of the GGW project? A. To improve local ecology. B. To develop rural economy. C. To predict climate patterns. D. To strengthen regional ties. 9. What do the statistics in paragraph 3 show of the initiative? A. The service period. B. The total budget. C. The targeted groups. D. The expected benefits. 10. How does Elvis Paul Tangem feel about the project? A. Skeptical. B. Worried. C. Confident. D. Satisfied. 11. What message does the author intend to convey in the text? A. African countries should stand together. B. The progress of the GGW project is slow. C. Fighting climate change is our top priority. D. Natural disasters are worse than we thought. A 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第二段的“Heavy rains, droughts, wildfires and landslides have all become common throughout the world. But nowhere is quite like the Sahel. In this huge African region, climate change has materialized in a dramatic manner. In some cases, the severe conditions have left people with no option other than to migrate elsewhere to survive. It was with all of this in mind that the extraordinary, but heavily debated project was first put forward.(暴雨、干旱、野火和山体滑坡在世界各地很普遍。但没有什么地方能像萨赫勒人那样。在这个巨大的非洲地区,气候变化以戏剧性的方式实现。在某些情况下,严重的情况使人们别无选择,只能迁移到其他地方去生存。正是考虑到所有这一切,首次提出了这个非凡的,但却有激烈的争议的项目)”可知,GGW计划的目的是应对非洲多变的气候,改善当地生态。故选A。 根据第三段内容“Fourteen years have passed since the initiative formally kicked off. Once completed, it was announced, the wall could end up capturing(俘获)250 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, while its creation and upkeep could create ten million jobs in rural areas.(该倡议正式启动已经过去14年了。既定的目标是建立一个15公里宽,8000公里长的树木和其他植物的绿化带,到2030年,将横跨整个萨赫尔地区,从塞内加尔到吉布提。总的来说,到2030年将恢复1亿公顷的土地。一旦完工,这堵墙最终可能会俘获2.5亿吨二氧化碳,而它的创造和维护可以在农村地区创造1000万个就业机会。)”可推断,这些数字表明了GGW计划的预期收益。故选D。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段的“‘When we started restoring the soil, we realized the area at risk was much wider than we initially thought,’ explains Elvis Paul Tangem, the African Union’s GGW coordinator. ‘We had few funds to push the initiative as much as we wanted to. There was skepticism among investors, who didn’t understand the project, but also among the African states themselves, which needed time to figure out if the GGW was a priority.’(“当我们开始恢复土壤时,我们意识到处于危险中的区域比我们最初想象的要大得多,”非洲联盟GGW协调员埃尔维斯·保罗·坦吉姆(Elvis Paul Tangem)解释说。“我们没有足够的资金来尽可能多地推动这项计划。投资者存在怀疑,他们不理解这个项目,但非洲国家自己也存在怀疑,他们需要时间来弄清楚GGW是否是优先项目。”)”可推断,埃尔维斯·保罗·坦吉姆对这项计划存在担忧。故选B。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段内容“Looking at the project as a whole, there’s still a long way to go. According to a status report by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, about four million hectares of degraded land have been restored. This means that progress towards the 100 million hectares target stands at just four per cent.( 从整体来看,这个项目还有很长的路要走。根据《联合国防治荒漠化公约》的一份现状报告,大约400万公顷的退化土地已经恢复。这意味着,实现1亿公顷目标的进展仅为4%。)”可推断,作者通过这篇文章想要传递的信息是,GGW计划进展缓慢。故选B。 D Accents are a sign of belonging and something that separates communities. Yet we can probably think of people who seem to have lost their accent and of others whose accent stays firmly in place. Given the personal and social importance of how someone speaks, why would anyone’s accent change? A conscious or subconscious desire to fit in can influence the way you speak. If someone moves from Australia to America to work, for example, they will probably at least change their accent in order to get a better sense of belonging. This may be out of a need or desire to be more clearly understood and to be accepted in a new community. They might also want to avoid ridicule for the way they speak. For people whose accents do shift, the way they speak may be less important to their sense of identity, or their identity with a social or professional group may be more pressing. Even before we are born, we are exposed to the speech patterns of those around us. We progress through various stages of speech development that result in us having speech patterns similar to those around us. For others whose accent does not seem to change, it could be because they feel safe in their identity, and their accent is much part of that identity — or that keeping the difference is valuable to them. Meanwhile, brain damage may result in foreign accent syndrome (FAS), which results from physical changes that are not under the speaker’s control. Suffering from FAS, speakers may lose the ability to speak at all or experience strange changes in the way they pronounce. In some cases, listeners might look down upon a person with FAS as they believe them to be foreigners. It’s no wonder many people unconsciously protect themselves by adapting their speech to those around them. 12. What does the underlined word ”This“ in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. The desire to fit in. B. The change of career. C. The adjustment of accents. D. The influence on language. 13. What makes people choose to change their accents? A. The result of brain damage. B. Their strong sense of identity. C. Their desire to learn about locals. D. The need to adapt to new environment. 14. What can we know about the people suffering from FAS? A. They may be taken as foreigners. B. They can not help making a sound. C. They suffer from emotional changes. D. They may change accents to gain respect. 15. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text? A. To explain the loss of accents. B. To introduce the history of accents. C. To analyze why accents are lost or kept. D. To show the significance of accent changes, 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第二段中“If someone moves from Australia to America to work, for example, they will probably at least change their accent in order to get a better sense of belonging. This may be out of a need or desire to be more clearly understood and to be accepted in a new community.(例如,如果有人从澳大利亚搬到美国工作,他们可能至少会改变口音以获得更好的归属感。这可能是出于需要或渴望被更清楚地理解并在新社区中被接受。)”可知this指代的是口音的调整,故选C项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段中“A conscious or subconscious desire to fit in can influence the way you speak.(有意识或潜意识想要融入环境的欲望会影响你说话的方式。)” 根据文章最后一段中“In some cases, listeners might look down upon a person with FAS as they believe them to be foreigners.(在某些情况下,听众可能会看不起患有FAS的人,因为他们认为他们是外国人。)” 根据第一段中“Given the personal and social importance of how someone speaks, why would anyone’s accent change?(鉴于某人说话方式的个人和社会重要性,为什么人的口音会改变?)”以及第四段“For others whose accent does not seem to change, it could be because they feel safe in their identity, and their accent is much part of that identity — or that keeping the difference is valuable to them.(对于那些口音似乎没有改变的人来说,这可能是因为他们对自己的身份感到安全,而他们的口音是这种身份的重要组成部分——或者保持差异对他们来说是有价值的。)” The Power of Peers Do birds of a feather really flock together? People do tend to choose friends who are similar to them. Many behaviors spread socially. Activities in certain brain areas change when other people are around. ____16____ You can use the power of social relationships to gain healthier habits — and motivate others to do the same. ____17____ Teens are especially responsive to peer influence. At the same time, the reward system in the teen brain becomes extra sensitive. Teens are just learning to explore the social world. Understanding other people’s values and being influenced by them are important parts of socializing. A research shows that even just having another peer around can change the reward response in the brain and also the risk-taking tendencies of teenagers. Some people seem to be more easily influenced than others and more sensitive to feeling included or excluded by others. ____18____ But it’s also a time that peer influence can help teens thrive if it gets them more involved with their community or helps them learn behaviors to get along with others. It’s the quality of friendships — not quantity — that really makes the difference. Friendships you feel you want to let go of may be low quality. ____19____ High quality friendships provide understanding, support, and recognition of your self-worth. These types of friendships are more steady and satisfying. Spending time with friends can be especially helpful for people. Noticing that our behavior is influenced by other people, we can be intentional and try to focus on the people who are doing the things we want to get into ourselves. ____20____ A. Adolescence is such a risky period. B. That can affect what you choose to do. C. Peer pressure can sometimes lead to competition. D. People care about what others think across all different age groups. E. They are linked to poor academic performance and behavioral issues. F. Sharing your healthy habits could also make a real difference to others. G. The number of friends you have determines your level of social influence. B 17. D 18. A 19. E 20. 【16题详解】 上文“People do tend to choose friends who are similar to them. (人们确实倾向于选择与自己相似的朋友)”和“Activities in certain brain areas change when other people are around. (当其他人在身边时,某些大脑区域的活动会发生变化)”讲志趣相投的朋友在身边,你的某些大脑区域的活动会发生变化,该空应该承接上文讲发生变化后会产生什么样的结果,才能引出下文“You can use the power of social relationships to gain healthier habits — and motivate others to do the same. (你可以利用社会关系的力量来养成更健康的习惯,并激励他人也这样做)”讲人们可以选择利用此类社会关系的力量改变自己、于自己有益, B选项“这会影响你的选择。”切合语境。故选B项。 【17题详解】 由下文“Teens are especially responsive to peer influence. (青少年对同伴的影响特别敏感)”和常识可知,人敏感是因为在意别人的看法,结合下文出现了“青少年”,该空应该引出各年龄阶段都会有因在意别人看法而变得敏感的人的内容,D选项“不同年龄段的人都关心别人的想法。”切合语境。故选D项。 【18题详解】 由上文“A research shows that even just having another peer around can change the reward response in the brain and also the risk-taking tendencies of teenagers. Some people seem to be more easily influenced than others and more sensitive to feeling included or excluded by others. (一项研究表明,即使身边有另一个同伴,也会改变大脑中的奖励反应,以及青少年的冒险倾向。有些人似乎比其他人更容易受到影响,对被他人包容或排斥的感觉更敏感)”可知,青少年有冒险倾向,易受影响,对被他人包容或排斥的感觉更敏感,这都是在讲青少年时期不好的地方,A选项“青春期是一个非常危险的时期。”切合语境,与下文“But it’s also a time that peer influence can help teens thrive if it gets them more involved with their community or helps them learn behaviors to get along with others. (但如果同伴的影响能让青少年更多地参与社区或帮助他们学习与他人相处的行为,那么同伴的影响也能帮助他们茁壮成长)”讲青少年也能成为积极力量形成对比。故选A项。 【19题详解】 结合下文“High quality friendships provide understanding, support, and recognition of your self-worth. These types of friendships are more steady and satisfying. (高质量的友谊提供对自我价值的理解、支持和认可。这些类型的友谊更稳定、更令人满意)”描述了什么是高质量的友谊,可推知该空应该承接上文“Friendships you feel you want to let go of may be low quality. (你觉得想要放弃的友谊可能质量很低)”讲低质量的友谊是怎么样的,E选项“它们与学习成绩不佳和行为问题有关。”切合语境,上下文形成对比。故选E项。 【20题详解】 由上文“Spending time with friends can be especially helpful for people. Noticing that our behavior is influenced by other people, we can be intentional and try to focus on the people who are doing the things we want to get into ourselves. Australian couple Greg Denaro and Dany bought a bulldog for their peaceful lifestyle. C 29. D 30. C 31. B 32. C 33. A 34. D 35. A. talent天赋;B. relief 宽慰;C. strategy策略;D. desire渴望。 故选A项。 A. forgot忘记;B. explained解释;C. imagined想象;D. noticed注意。 根据下文“was pulling a skateboard with a strength beyond his size. ”可知,乔托的反应是疯狂的。故选C项。 【25题详解】 考查动词词义辨析。句意:起初格雷格·德纳罗认为乔托讨厌滑板发出的声音,但后来他们发现,他那兴奋的反应实际上恰恰表明了相反的情况。A. disliked不喜欢;B. heard听到;C. preferred偏爱;D. produced生产。 故选A项。 A. accidentally偶然地;B. traditionally传统地;C. publicly公开地;D. actually事实上。 A. screen屏幕;B. board木板、滑板;C. bike自行车;D. package包裹。根据下文“He jumped on it right away and tried to stand on it.(他立刻跳了上去,并试图站在上面)”可知,空格处应该是指“滑板”。 A. shocked使震惊;B. aided帮助;C. attracted吸引;D. annoyed使恼怒。根据上文“He jumped on it right away and tried to stand on it.(他立刻跳了上去,并试图站在上面)”可知,他对滑板表现出强烈兴趣,可知此处指“吸引”。 A. give给;B.put放置;C. throw扔;D. take拿走。 A. attempt尝试;B. promise承诺;C. wait等待;D. hesitate犹豫。根据下文“jump on it, bite it, and push it(抓住它、咬住它然后推它)”可知,此处是指“迫不及待”的状态。 A. appeared出现;B. changed改变;C. continued继续;D. existed存在。根据下文“three years later when his owners handmade a purpose-built board for him.(三年后,他的主人专门为他制作了一块特制的滑板)”可知,此处体现的是情况的“变化”。 A. within his reach在他力所能及的范围内;B. with his company和他的陪同;C. in his own right凭借他自身的实力;D. in his honor以他的名义。根据下文“to turn, flip the board over, and navigate around obstacles(转身、将木板翻转过来,并绕过障碍物前行)”可知,此处是指“凭借自身的实力”做这些事情。 A. improvement进步、改善;B. performance表演;C. difference差异;D. perseverance毅力。 故选A项。 A. work out解决;B. take off起飞;C. turn up出现;D. show off炫耀。 A. name名字;B. star星星;C. wish愿望;D. task任务。 故选A项。 5G is developing, but most of us aren’t really sure what it is or the reason____36____we need it. I knew if I didn’t leave the house soon I would unleash (发泄) a storm of anger on him. “I’m taking you to school.” Dad said, as rain came down in sheets and lightning flashed in the sky. “You are not used to driving in this kind of weather.” he continued, reaching for his boots. “I have been driving that route for many years. I can drive it today.” With these words, I struggled into my jacket, grabbed my bag and stormed out of the house. “Don’t take the shortcut, Donna!” Dad shouted after me, throwing through the car window a big pack of sandwiches. Dad had been working as a building worker when a heart attack last spring forced him to leave his job earlier than he had planned. Dad began to stay home and took over the household chores. As the medical bills mounted I realized I would have to work part-time after my school day to make ends meet. The new arrangement was a disaster for me. Exhausted after a day of dealing with my academic routine and food delivery, all I wanted was a hot home-cooked meal and a good night’s sleep. During the months that followed, Dad’s cooking somehow was getting worse. We dined on smelly baked potatoes and, of course, hard egg sandwiches. I would remember the time Dad had eaten every piece of potatoes on his plate and complimented (恭维) the dinner though I discovered later how he disliked it. So I wouldn’t say anything to him, even about the endless sandwiches. It was much harder for me to hold my peace after Dad served such meals for the third night in a row. As far as I was concerned, things couldn’t get much worse. So that rainy morning when I found my blue skirt badly folded, I could only burst out. I had had it! Ten minutes later, ignoring Dad’s warning about not taking the shortcut, I turned off the main route. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Helpless and hungry I was in a state of desperation. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Ten minutes later, ignoring Dad’s warning about not taking the shortcut, I turned off the main route. I hoped it didn’t rain enough to flood the road but my wheels were nearly in the water as I drove along. It was raining increasingly heavily with lightning flashing nonstop. I felt a bit scared, attempting to drive backwards but in vain. Gradually, the road ahead was totally covered and turned into a running stream. The last straw was when my car was power-off all of a sudden. I got completely stuck as it grew darker and darker. Helpless and hungry, I was in a state of desperation. The sight of the smelly sandwiches that Dad baked today gave me hope for the best. I grabbed them and swallowed to fill my empty stomach, refreshed and grateful. “Donna!” Oh, it was Dad, wet through. “I’m throwing a rope,” he yelled. “Hang on to it and walk towards me”. Opening the car door, I grabbed the rope and inched out. “Be careful!” Dad said quietly. “I got you Dad!” I hugged him, tears in my eyes. 1】I hoped it didn’t rain enough to flood the road but my wheels were nearly in the water as I drove along.(运用了省略 that 的宾语从句以及 as 引导的时间状语从句) 【高分句型 2】The last straw was when my car was power-off all of a sudden.(运用了 when 引导的表语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高2024级高二上期第一次学月统考英语试题 试题说明: 1、本试题满分150分,答题时间120分钟。 1. Tower Ballroom Blackpool Another immensely popular Victorian seaside town, Blackpool, received a sudden increase in visitors following the erection of the Blackpool Tower in 1894. B. B November 23 was the happiest day of last winter for Wang Xiaolong. On that day, he spotted nearly 400 white cranes (鹤) in his patrol (巡逻) area near Poyang Lake. “I was thrilled. It was the largest number of migratory birds I had seen in months,” Wang said. Wang has been a patrol officer at the Wucheng protection and administration station of the Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve Bureau for 38 years. Each morning, around 5 am, he rises early, has a simple breakfast, and sets off from the protection station. “Protecting the birds of Poyang Lake is my duty. This work has become a significant part of my life and holds the utmost importance to me. By protecting nature’s spirits, I have found my life’s purpose,” Wang said. Wang fondly recalls rescuing a young white crane 20 years ago on a winter’s day. He spotted the injured young crane during his patrol and brought it back to the protection station, where he fed it small fish and shrimp and took it to the bird hospital for treatment. “I remember when we went to the hospital; I walked in front, and the young crane followed me. We entered the hospital together. After about a month, its injury healed, and I decided to release it back into the wild,” he said. “That day left a deep impression on me. The little white crane circled above my head for a long time before flying away. It felt like it recognized me and was reluctant to leave.” Over the decades, Wang has rescued and released over 300 birds and participated in more than 180 projects involving the protection of migratory birds. C In 2007, the African Union announced an ambitious project—to plant the Great Green Wall (GGW), a band of trees that would stretch the length of the Sahel. D Accents are a sign of belonging and something that separates communities. Yet we can probably think of people who seem to have lost their accent and of others whose accent stays firmly in place. Given the personal and social importance of how someone speaks, why would anyone’s accent change? A conscious or subconscious desire to fit in can influence the way you speak. If someone moves from Australia to America to work for example, they will probably at least change their accent in order to get a better sense of belonging. A. People do tend to choose friends who are similar to them. Many behaviors spread socially. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Helpless and hungry, I was in a state of desperation. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
