Ever since I was a little child, I have always liked learning words and expressions in other languages.
When I was nine, I started studying English at school, and I loved it. And, when I was sixteen, I began to learn French. Now I have friends from the UK and France. Keeping in touch with these friends is a great way to practice the language.
I am also learning Japanese and German. These languages are a little bit more difficult for me, but being able to express myself in these languages is exciting.
Some people ask me why I spend so much time learning foreign languages. I always say there are a lot of benefits (好处). For example, learning a foreign language improves your memory, introduces you to all kinds of information, helps you to communicate with people from different places and cultures and to make wonderful friends.

When Teng Fei walked into the school hall for the speech contest, no one recognized him at first. “Is that really Teng Fei? He used to be so quiet!” two students said quietly. But Teng Fei smiled confidently and stepped onto the stage.
Teng Fei’s change didn’t happen overnight. Two years ago, he was a 14-year-old boy with little confidence. He used to have short straight hair and wear thick glasses. “I was afraid to speak in public,” Teng Fei recalled. “In class, I always sat at the back and never put up my hand. When teachers asked me questions, my face turned red at once.” He even used to stay at home on weekends instead of playing with friends.
The turning point came when his English teacher Ms. Li noticed his problem. She asked Teng Fei to join the school’s English drama club. At first Teng Fei wanted to refuse. “I thought I could never act in front of others,” he said. But Ms. Li encouraged him: “Change takes courage, but it will make you grow.”
Teng Fei started joining in the club. He used to forget his words easily and felt nervous during rehearsals. Gradually, he learned to express himself through body language and voice changes. “I still remember my first small role,” he said. “I played a farmer and only had three sentences, but I practiced them many times.” With time going on, he became more outgoing. He even began to help new members of the club.
Now Teng Fei is 16. He has grown taller and changed his hairstyle—his hair is now a little longer and wavier. He still wears glasses but looks more energetic. Most importantly, he has become brave and confident. “I used to hate speaking in front of people, but now I enjoy it,” he said. “Drama didn’t just change my personality; it taught me that growth means challenging yourself.”
Next month, Teng Fei will take part in a city-level speech contest. “I’m not afraid anymore,” he said. “I know even if I don’t win, I’ve already succeeded in changing myself.”

①A new form of transport will be with us in the next few years—flying taxis. Many of us grew up watching sci-fi (科幻) movies with flying taxis. They are now becoming science fact.
②The Japanese airline ANA teamed up with a US tech start-up called Joby Aviation. The two companies want to start producing flying taxis at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka. They are now working together on building the flying taxi. They also need to work out what traffic rules the taxis will need to follow, and what kind of training flying taxi pilots will need. The five-seat (座), all-electric taxi will be able to take off and land freely. It will fly about 300 kilometers an hour.
③Joby’s CEO said the taxi would be good for the environment. He told reporters, “Joby helps people save time while cutting down their carbon footprint (碳排放量). Japan offers us a good chance to do that with 92% of the population living in cities, and Tokyo being one of the top 20 busiest cities in the world.” The president of ANA, Koji Shibata, was also excited about the project. He said, “ANA has 70 years of experience. It can offer safe flights (飞行) to customers across the world. Also, it is able to offer them the chance to travel fast. From an international airport to the center of a city is very popular.” The two companies successfully tested a flying taxi for the first time in 2020. How I’ve Changed!
Over the past few years, I have changed a lot. Physically, I’ve grown taller and stronger. My interests have shifted from playing video games to reading books and playing basketball. But the biggest change is in my personality. I used to be very shy, but now I’m much more confident.
This change started when I joined the school English speech contest last year. At first, I was too nervous to speak clearly. However, after practicing every day with my teacher, I improved step by step. Finally, I won third prize! This experience taught me that courage and hard work can overcome fear. Now I believe in myself more than ever before.
