There is really no reason for my writing the life of Su Tungpo except that I want to do it. For years, the writing of his biography (传记) has been at the back of my mind, but the regret has never quieted down. Now that I am able to apply myself to this task, I am happy, without any reason.
A vivid personality isn’t that easy to be understood. One might say that Su Tungpo was an unchangeable optimist (乐观主义者), a friend of the people, a prose master, an original painter, a great calligrapher, an experimenter in wine making, an engineer, a secretary to the emperor, a dissenter (持异议者) in politics, and a poet. And yet that might miss the sum total of why people like Su Tungpo. Su Tungpo’s complex personality gives a reason. Always deeply stuck in politics, he was always greater than politics. Without trick and without purpose, he went along singing, composing (写作), and criticizing, to express something he felt in his heart, paying no attention to what might be the results for himself. He wrote just because he enjoyed writing, and today we enjoy his writing just because he wrote so beautifully, generously, and out of the clearness of his heart.
As I try to find the reasons why for a thousand years in China each generation has a crowd of crazy admirers of this poet, I come to the second reason, which is the same as the first, stated in a different way. Su Tungpo had charm. The chief charm of Su Tungpo was a force of character (that could not be stopped by anyone), a force (that started at the moment of his birth, had to run its course until death closed his mouth and stopped his laughing chatter). He wielded (运用) his pen almost as if it were a toy. He could be curious, or humorous or serious, very serious, and from his pen we hear various human emotions of joy, happiness, worry and love.
On the whole, we get the impression that he played and sang through life and enjoyed it greatly, and when sadness came and unluckiness fell, he accepted them with a smile. That is the kind of charm which I am trying to describe in my way and which has made him the favorite poet of so many Chinese experts.
5. What does the underlined phrase “this task” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A read about the life of Su Tungpo B. read Su Tungpo’s poems
C. write the life story of Su Tungpo D. write down Su Tungpo’s poems
6. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Su Tungpo’s works were all full of joy and love.
B. Su Tungpo had a crowd of fans at home and abroad.
C. Su Tungpo was good at many things except making wine.
D. Su Tungpo always expressed himself without caring about the results.
7. What’s the structure of the passage? (P①= paragraph ①)
A. B. C. D.
8. Which words can best describe Su Tungpo according to the passage?
A. Beautiful and clear. B. Sad and changeable.
C. Serious and unlucky. D. Optimistic and charming.

①Every Saturday night, Mama would sit down by the kitchen table and count out the money Papa had brought home.
② “For the rent (房租).” Mama would count out the big silver pieces.
③ “For the groceries.” Another group of coins.
④ “I’ll need a notebook.” That would be my brother Nels or me.
⑤Mama would put one or two coins to the side. We would watch with great interest. At last, Papa would ask, “Is that all?” And when Mama nodded, we could relax a little, Mama would look up and smile, “Good, we do not have to go to the Bank.” We were so proud of Mama’s Bank Account (银行账户). It gave us such a warm, safe feeling.
⑥When Nels graduated from grammar school, he wanted to go on to high school. “It will cost a little money.” he said.
⑦We all gathered around the table. I took down a box and laid it in front of Mama. This was the “Little Bank”, which was used for sudden emergencies (紧急事件). Mama counted out the money in the Little Bank. There was not enough. “We do not want to go to the Bank, right?” she said. We all shook our heads.
⑧ “I will work in Dillon’s grocery after school,” Nels answered.
⑨ “I will give up smoking,” Dad added.
⑩ “I will look after the children every Friday night,” I said.
⑪Mama gave us a bright smile and wrote down a number. “That’s quite enough.” We all felt good because we didn’t have to go down town and draw money out of Mama’s Bank Account.
⑫That was twenty years ago.
⑬Last year I sold my first story, I hurried to give the check to Mama. “For you,” I said, “to put in your Bank Account.”
⑭Mama looked at me, surprisingly. “There is no account,” she said. “In all my life, I’ve never been inside a bank.”
⑮And when I didn’t-couldn’t-answer, Mama said seriously, “It is not good for little ones to be afraid-to not feel safe.”
9. From the first 5 paragraphs, we know ________.
A. the family counted out money every Sunday B. both Mama and Papa got a job
C. the family made a weekly plan for daily costs D. the family is free to buy anything
10. Nels was able to go on to high school because ________.
A. there was a Little Box at home for emergencies
B. the family drew money out of Mama’s Bank Account
C. Papa worked harder to make more money
D. the family worked together to collect money
11. In Paragraph 14, Mama looked at “me” surprisingly because ________.
A. “I” wrote a story and sold it B. “I” gave my first check to her
C. “I” believed there was a real bank account D. “I” graduated from school with little money
12. We can infer from the passage that Mama is ________.
A. wise B. humorous C. helpful D. hard-working
D
Tide is the regular rise and fall of the ocean level caused by the movement of the sun, the earth and the moon. It is considered a promising source of green energy to produce electricity in coastal areas.
To make use of tidal energy, we need to build tidal power stations (潮汐发电站). The bays and the river mouths where the tide is high (the tidal range is more than 10 metres) are usually perfect sites to build tidal power stations. There are many such places in the world. According to the IRENA (the International renewable Energy Agency), by just using 2% of our coastlines, we can produce 4,383 TWh of ocean power each year, enough to meet 16.4% of the world’s electricity needs.
To build a tidal power station, we need to build a dam (坝). In the dam are many turbines and on each turbine there is an electric generator (发电机). When the tide rises, water comes through the dam, the turbines turn and the electric generators work, producing electricity. When the tide falls, water goes out through the dam, the turbines turn again. The electric generators continue to work.
Tidal energy has its advantages. Using tidal energy to produce electricity is much cheaper than using the traditional energy, like coal or gas. For example, the Rance Tidal Power Station in France has been there for over 50 years, producing around 540 GWh of electricity each year.
The cost is only 1.3 cents/kWh. Tidal energy can be used nearly 24 hours a day. As long as the sun, the earth and the moon exist, we can use it to produce electricity. But without sunshine, there is no solar energy. When there is no wind, electric generators will not work. In addition, with the development of modern technology, tidal energy can be stored and used to produce electricity continuously. However, we still have some problems to solve. It is difficult to build a dam in the sea, and the cost is very high. Moreover, it’s expensive to keep a tidal power station in its best condition. Scientists are working on them.
13. A tidal power station is best built ________.
A. at a river mouth with wind B. along the coast with waves
C. in a bay with tide high enough D. in coastal areas with sunshine
14. The underlined word “turbine” in Paragraph Three is a machine to ________.
A. make the tide rise and fall B. make an electric generator work
C. let water go through the dam D. keep the dam in good condition
15. What advantage does tidal energy have?
A. We can use it to get useful tide. B. It can improve the ocean environment.
C. We can use it nearly all the time. D. It meets 16.4% of the electricity needs.
16. How can we make better use of tidal energy?
A. By digging more bays and river mouths.
B. By building cheaper tidal power stations.
C. By closing traditional electric power plants.
D. By using tidal energy to replace other energy.

On September 3 2025, China held a big military parade in Beijing. This parade was to commemorate the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in two wars: CPWRAJA (the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression) and WAFW (the World Anti-Fascist War). The theme of this event was “Commemorating the Great Victory, Upholding Peace and Development”.
The parade lasted about 70 minutes with 45 groups, including an aerial flag group, foot groups, honor groups with old battle flags, equipment lines and flying planes. It showed China’s home-made main battle tools (still in use), new armed cars (武装车辆), planes and unmanned (无人的) machines, reflecting the progress in defense (国防) technology.
A great part was the show by the joint military band. There were 14 rows—this stood for the 14-year resistance war. And there were 80 trumpet players—they represented the 80th anniversary. They played famous songs from the war years, which was a strong way to honor history.

I’m so glad to get your email and know you’re interested in the Mid-Autumn Festival! It’s on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. On this day, families get together for a big dinner and eat mooncakes, which are round and sweet.
This year, my family and I made mooncakes together. My mom taught me to mix flour and water, then put sweet fillings in. Though they weren’t perfect, we laughed a lot while eating them.
Besides, you can’t imagine how excited I feel to know you’ll come to Anshan in the Spring Festival. Could you tell me when you’ll arrive? And I’d be happy if you can come to my home—my family will cook delicious Chinese food for you!
Looking forward to your reply!
