A
Four ancient Chinese irrigation (灌溉) projects have been designated World Heritage Irrigation Structures, raising the number of such Chinese facilities on the WHIS(世界灌溉工程遗产) list to 42. The Honghe Hani Rice Terraces, the Chishan Lake irrigation project, the Jianjiangyan irrigation system and the Yongding River ancient canal irrigation project were included in the list.
The Honghe Hani Rice Terraces (梯田)
Also a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces in Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture, Yunnan province, date back more than 1,300 years to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Spread over 3,740 hectares (公顷), the site features a complex ecosystem of forests, villages, terraces and waterways that is closely connected with the daily lives of the people, the process of growing crops and the ecology.
The Chishan Lake Irrigation Project
The Chishan Lake irrigation project in Jurong, Jiangsu province, was built more than 1,700 years ago. It remains a crucial irrigation and flood-control project in the upper Qinhuai River, serving more than 5,130 hectares. The project is known for harnessing the natural terrain to its advantage. In plain polder or low-lying areas, embankments have been built to create retention lakes. Equipped with bidirectional sluice gates, the lakes mitigate flooding and drought in the low-lying areas.
The Jianjiangyan Irrigation System
Construction of the Jianjiangyan irrigation system began around 141 BC in Pengzhou, Sichuan province. It continues to irrigate 10,800 hectares of farmland. Builders used bamboo cages filled with pebbles to create weirs that coordinated irrigation, floodwater discharge and sediment removal. The system also features weirs that divert spring water from wells, ensuring irrigation even during droughts when river water is rare.
The Yongding River Ancient Canal Irrigation Project
The Yongding River ancient canal irrigation project in Mentougou district, Beijing, is believed to have been built during the Liao Dynasty (916-1125). It still irrigates about 133 hectares and provides additional water for orchards and ecological areas. The canal uses a bend in the Yongding River to draw water. Its sloped design ensures natural sedimentation, turning silt-laden river water into clean irrigation water.
21. Which of the following is TRUE about the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces?
A. It was built during the Liao Dynasty.
B. It covers an area of 5,130 hectares.
C. It is both a UNESCO World Heritage site and a WHIS site.
D. Its ecosystem is independent of local people’s lives.
22. What is special about the Jianjiangyan irrigation system?
A. It uses bidirectional sluice gates to control floods.
B. It relies on bamboo cages with pebbles to build weirs.
C. It draws water from a bend in the Yongding River.
D. It creates stepped canals for navigation.
23. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To explain how ancient irrigation systems work.
B. To introduce four Chinese irrigation projects added to WHIS.
C. To compare different irrigation projects around the world.
D. To discuss the importance of protecting historical irrigation works.
B
The Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival is the first national festival that has been set up for farmers since 2018. There is no doubt that without farmers’ hard work, social and economic development is impossible. The creation of the harvest festival is meeting Chinese farmers’ expectations for society’s emphasis on agriculture. It reminds people that more attention needs to be paid to agriculture and farmers since agriculture is the foundation (基础) of China’s national economy and the source of the Chinese population’s food supply including grain, meat, vegetables and fruits.
The most important thing is how to celebrate the festival. Farmers are the major players during this festival and relevant authorities (有关部门) plan and promote harvest activities in a way that attracts farmers’ interest and draws them out to participate. This will hopefully lead to their celebrating the festival with energy and enthusiasm, which will impact on the coming years’ celebrations. Apart from farmers, people from all walks of life can also take a short trip to different places and take part in the harvest activities. Not only can they experience and taste the joy of the harvest, but they can also buy green agricultural products online and offline to contribute to farmers’ incomes.
The festival creates an atmosphere of respect and caring for farmers. It is necessary to make full use of preferential policies, capital and good environment to boost agricultural production and the rural economy, and to improve farmers’ living conditions so that they can devote themselves to their agricultural work. Although recent years have seen economic growth in most rural areas, there has not been the same increase in farmers’ income. The festival will help to increase food output, encouraging farmers to grow more quality food, which will greatly improve farmers’ life quality.
24. What is the purpose of establishing the Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival?
A. To increase food varieties for Chinese people.
B. To spread ancient Chinese agricultural culture.
C. To stress the importance of farming and farmers.
D. To promote the development of modern agriculture.
25. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The ways of celebrating the festival. B. The present situation of agriculture.
C. The history of celebrating the festival. D. The new direction in argriculture.
26. What does the underlined word “boost” in the last paragraph probably mean?

Europe was about to enter World War II when Tove Jansson, the Finnish writer and artist, began her first “Moomin” story, featuring a snout-nosed troll (长鼻子精灵) living in a magical land threatened by a rising flood. This was eventually published in 1945 as The Little Trolls and the Great Flood, the first of nine Moomin books that became Finnish literary classics. The Moomin characters achieved international recognition when Jansson adapted them into a comic series for The Evening News in London in1954, and saw renewed popularity again in the 1990s with an animated series and feature film.
However, Jansson’s life as an artist and peace activist is far less well-known. The newly opened exhibition in Paris, “Houses of Tove Jansson’’, aimed to bring more attention to her work and the utopian vision (乌托邦愿景) that influenced it. It featured Moomin illustrations and cartoons, along with Jansson’s paintings, and designs for costumes and sets-many of them expressing a wish for peace and harmony.
Exhibit organizer Tuukka Laurila said that many characters in the Moomin series were inspired by Jansson’s personal relationships. Moominpappa and Moominmamma are often seen as representations of Jansson’s parents Viktor Jansson and Signe Hammarsten-Jansson. Snufkin is inspired by Atos Wirtanen, one of Tove Jansson’s close friends.
Born in Helsinki in 1914, Jansson began drawing at a young age and worked with magazines, creating around 100 illustrations. From 1944, she lived for half the year on Klovharun, a tiny island with only one house, enjoying a simple lifestyle and welcoming guests. This open-door friendliness is mirrored in the Moomin stories, where home symbolizes safety yet faces various threats.
Laurila shared that “Houses of Tove Jansson” encouraged visitors to explore her creativity and the important topics in her Moomin universe, from friendship to environmental awareness, making her impact significant even today. “She’s describing what we’re currently going through,” she added,“but it’s amazing to think that she was writing these about 80 years ago.”
28.What brought the Moomins a second wave of popularity?
A. An art exhibition in Paris. B. A comic series in a newspaper.
C. A collection of children’s books. D. An animated TV show and a movie.
29.What was the focus of the exhibition “Houses of Tove Jansson” ?
A. Jansson’s house on Klovharun. B. Jansson’s artworks and peaceful vision.
C. The role of nature in Jansson’s life and art. D. The cultural impact of the Moomin characters.
30. What does paragraph 3 mainly infer about Jansson?
A. She wanted to hide her past. B. Her close connections shaped her art.
C. She preferred traditional artistic expression. D. Her work reflected her academic background.
31. What message did Laurila want to express in the last paragraph?
A. Jansson’s artistic style is ahead of its time. B. Jansson primarily focused on societal issues.
C. Jansson’s creations remain thought-inspiring. D. Jansson valued illustrations above narratives.
D
With their stiff leaves and large flowers, bromeliads (凤梨) can add drama to a plant stand or window sill. Though they are not the flashiest of houseplants, some pollution scientists are ready to give them credit. Their new data show these plants are experts at cleaning the air.
Paints, furniture, photocopiers and printers, cleaning supplies and dry-cleaned clothes can all release volatile organic chemicals, or VOCs. Chronic VOC exposure poses serious health risks, from dizziness and asthma to potential organ damage and cancer. But certain types of greenery can suck the pollutants up, which keeps them safely away from us. Chemist Vadoud Niri’s found that a single bromeliad can remove at least 80 percent of six different VOCs from the air inside a 76-liter container. His team tested five houseplants against eight VOCs, finding bromeliads outperformed others. Only two VOCs, dichloromethane and trichloromethane were ignored by all plants.
“Plants absorb VOCs from the air”, explains medicinal chemist Webe Kadima. Those gases enter through tiny openings in plant leaves and stems. Once inside, the plant’s enzymes (酶) break down the VOCs into smaller, harmless chemicals.
Of course, a house, or even a bedroom, is much bigger than the container Niri and his team used. But their work suggests people might breathe easier if they can figure out what type and how many plants it takes to clean the air in a room. This is important because indoor air usually has three to five times greater concentrations of VOCs than outdoor air.
Niri says he plans to test how many houseplants it takes to clean the air in an average-size room. After that, he will repeat the experiment in a nail salon. “With bottles of nail polish and remover, the air in those salons tends to have high levels of VOCs”, he notes.
While special air filtering machines might do the same job as green plants, they cost a lot more, Niri says. And they are nowhere near as pretty as a bromeliad, especially one in bloom.
32. What is one of Niri’s findings about bromeliads?
A. They lead in VOCs removal during tests.
B. They beat machines in air cleaning.
C. They absorb most pollutants in a room.
D. They break down VOCs through enzymes.
33. What does Webe Kadima try to explain in paragraph 3?
A. The pollutant removal process of plants. B. The necessity to solve air pollution.
C. The medical value of plants’ enzymes. D. The absorption capability of different plants.
34. What will be the focus of Niri’s research?
A. Designing cheap air-filtering device. B. Researching blooming bromeliads.
C. Repeating the tests in various salons. D. Testing plant performance in larger space.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Plants: Efficient VOCs Remover B. Enzyme: Air Pollution Solution
C. Nail Salons: Indoor VOCs Producer D. Bromeliads: Nature’s Air Purifier

Mrs Winnington was called Winnie by everyone. She lived in a very big house that was close to a girls’ boarding school. Twelve girls stayed with Winnie from Mondays to Fridays. Then their parents would drive them home for the weekends. Winnie looked after the girls. She sometimes helped them with their homework.
Winnie had a cat called Feathery because he had a big soft tail. She always said that Feathery was the cleverest cat in the world. The girls did not believe that, but they loved stroking (抚摸) Feathery’s tail.
One Wednesday morning when the girls were getting seated for their breakfasts, one of them, Anna, ran into the dining room and told them all, “The watch that my parents gave me for my birthday is missing. I took it off last night before going to bed and it was gone when I got up this morning!”
Winnie was as upset about the missing watch as Anna.“This is terrible,” she said. “We may have a thief (小偷) among us. We will have to be very watchful.”
But the following morning another girl, Candice, told them that her necklace (项链) had been stolen during the night.
“If this goes on for much longer, I will have to call in the police,” said Winnie.
On Friday morning when the girls came downstairs for breakfast, Winnie told them all, “Last night, the thief came into my room and stole my earrings.”
“Oh no!" said the girls. “What are we going to do?”
“Don’t worry, girls,” said Winnie. “I was asleep when the thief came into my room, but Feathery was awake and he saw what happened. Feathery is the cleverest cat in the world and he will identify the girl who has been stealing things in this house.”
Winnie continued, “I have left Feathery in my bedroom. I want every girl to go in there, one at a time. Each girl must stroke Feathery’s big tail. Feathery loves that, but he knows which girl stole my earrings and he will scratch that girl.”

The girls did what Winnie told them to do. Later, when all of them were back in the dining room, Winnie told them all to form a straight line and to hold up their hands. She then went from one girl to the next, smelling their hands. She stopped in front of one of them and said,”You’re the one who has been stealing! Hand over the stolen things. I will phone your parents to come and collect you. You cannot return here.” All of the stolen things were handed back.
When the other girls praised Feathery, Winnie said the thief was caught thanks to her perfume. Winnie said, ”When I found that my earrings were missing, I put some of my perfume on Feathery’s tail. When you girls stroked his tail, I was able to smell it off your hands. But one girl had no smell at all. She was obviously afraid Feathery would scratch her so she did not stroke his tail. I knew that girl was the thief!” The other girls said they thought it was Feathery’s cleverness, but Winnie was the really clever one.

根据第一段中的..saw renewed popularity again in the 1990s with an animated series and feature film(姆明角色在20世纪90年代随着一部动画片和电影再次流行起来)可知,是动画系列和电影给姆明系列带来了第二波人气。

根据第二段中的“Chemist Vadoud Niri’s found that a single bromeliad can remove at least 80 percent of six different VOCs from the air inside a 76-liter container. His team tested five houseplants against eight VOCs, finding bromeliads outperformed others.(化学家Vadoud Niri发现,在76升的容器中,一株凤梨科植物能清除空气中至少80%的六种不同挥发性有机化合物。他的团队用八种挥发性有机化合物对五种室内植物进行了测试,发现凤梨科植物的表现优于其他植物。)”可知,Niri关于凤梨科植物的发现之一是在测试中它们在清除挥发性有机化合物方面领先。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“Plants absorb VOCs from the air, explains medicinal chemist Webe Kadima. Those gases enter through tiny openings in plant leaves and stems. Once inside, the plant’s enzymes (酶) break down the VOCs into smaller, harmless chemicals.(药用化学家Webe Kadima解释说,植物从空气中吸收挥发性有机化合物。这些气体通过植物叶子和茎上的微小开口进入。一旦进入,植物的酶会将挥发性有机化合物分解成更小的无害化学物质。)”可知,Webe Kadima在第三段试图解释植物清除污染物的过程。故选A项。
根据第五段中的“Niri says he plans to test how many houseplants it takes to clean the air in an average-size room. After that, he will repeat the experiment in a nail salon.(Niri说,他计划测试在一个普通大小的房间里需要多少室内植物才能净化空气。之后,他将在一家美甲沙龙重复这个实验。)”可知,Niri的研究重点将是测试植物在更大空间里的表现。故选D项。
35.主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Though they are not the flashiest of houseplants, some pollution scientists are ready to give them credit. Their new data show these plants are experts at cleaning the air.(尽管这些植物并非是最引人注目的室内植物,但一些污染研究专家却愿意认可它们的作用。他们的最新研究结果表明,这些植物是净化空气的能手。)”以及文章内容可知,文章主要围绕凤梨科植物展开,介绍了其在清除空气中挥发性有机化合物方面的出色能力、净化原理以及相关研究,因此“凤梨科植物:大自然的空气净化器”最适合作为本文标题。故选D项。
