The movie theater is a fantasy land that takes the dreams of anyone. It attracts groups of different tastes. There are certain characteristics that distinguish these people from one another. And the characteristics also help guide directors towards what is going to be the next big cinematic presentation.
The Regulars
They are basically amateur movie critics themselves due to the number of movies they watch. They do not decide more between movies and can generally see two or even three in one sitting. So older people are the regulars due to their plenty of free time they have.
The Young Parents
Children’s movies are their entertainment of choice, and they tend to choose light-hearted humor over everything. Usually friendly, this group are great at socializing. As for the movie category for children, directors trust this group as they know what is wanted and expected in the types of movies.
The Couple
They are quick to get into the cinema and usually buy what is required by the female partner. What is usually a similar theme in their movies is at least a hinting at a love story of some sort. These groups are excellent test subjects for the production of Nicholas Sparks type movies as they feel like their love story is the next big production and thus directors are drawn towards them.
The Noisy Teens
These types can interrupt a movie countless times. Though they may buy tons of food, they seem somehow not to send the food into their mouths and employees find much food is left on the floor as if a food fight went on during the film. Action and adventure movies come out usually for this crowd because the plot and fast-paced nature of the film usually keep the teens at bay for that time period.
36. The text would most benefit ________.
A. film lovers B. theater visitors C. movie directors D. cinema bosses
37. What do we learn about the Couple?
A. The female partner often decides what they see.
B. Both of them enjoy movies of different themes.
C. They are required to get into the cinema soon.
D. They like to judge the quality of the love-story films.
38. Which group will probably pay little attention to the subject of the movie?
A. The Young Parents. B. The Regulars.
C. The Couple. D. The Noisy Teens.
39. What kind of movies most likely attracts the teens?
A. Light-hearted humor movies. B. Nicholas Sparks type movies.
C. Romantic love-story movies. D. Exciting movies about the war.
40. What’s the text mainly about?
A. The recipe to pick a popular movie. B. Movies for people with different tastes.
C. Approaches to attracting audiences. D. Analysis of movie theater goers.

A Teacher’s Lifesaving Call
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Julia Koch began what was only her second year as a first grade teacher in a virtual classroom.
One September afternoon a few weeks into the school year, she received a call from Cynthia Phillips, who was having technical difficulties with her granddaughter’s tools for online learning.
Koch immediately knew something was wrong with Phillips. The two women had spoken numerous times before, but Koch had never heard the grandmother sound quite like this. Her words were so jumbled that Koch could barely understand her, though she was able to make out that Phillips had fallen four times that day.
Koch called her principal, Charlie Lovelady, who assured her that he would call and check on Phillips himself.
Just like Koch, Lovelady could barely understand Phillips. He suspected she might be having a stroke—he recognized the signs from when his own father had suffered one. Lovelady was able to make out the word “kids” and immediately became concerned that Phillips’s two grandchildren, aged six and eight, were probably home alone with her—she is their primary guardian—and scared. Lovelady asked his office manager to send an ambulance to the grandmother’s home. Then Lovelady called two deans in the school district, to tell them what was going on, both of whom dropped everything and drove to the family’s home.
When they pulled up less than ten minutes later, the EMTs(急救人员)were treating Phillips while the two girls, looking visibly shaken, were outside with a neighbor.
The quick response from Koch and Lovelady saved Phillips’s life. She arrived at the hospital in time to get treatment and before chronic damage occurred.
“If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here,” said Phillips from her hospital bed about a month after her stroke.
Thanks to an extended stay in the hospital, she has regained most of the movement throughout her body except for one hand and a portion of her mouth, which affects her speech.
41. When did the story happen?
A. When Koch was in her first grade.
B. When the grandchildren were having online classes.
C. When Lovelady was with his own father.
D. When the EMTs were giving medical help to Phillips.
42. Why did Koch know that Phillips was in trouble?
A. Because Phillips’s voice sounded strange.
B. Because Phillips had seldom called Koch.
C Because Phillips spoke a strange language.
D. Because Koch could not hear very clearly.
43. How did Lovelady know that Phillips might be having a stroke?
A. By calling the hospital for advice.
B. By visiting Phillips in person.
C. By recognizing the signs he knew.
D. By asking the office workers for help.
44. The underlined word “chronic” in Paragraph 7 may best be replaced by ____.
A. minor. B. unknown. C. obvious. D. serious.

Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics, but sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time that you built a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.
Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world.
The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.
It very well might be that you are having a negative self-image because you can’t move past one weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves (卷起你的袖子) and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true.
The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!
46. You need to build a positive self-image when you ________.
A. dare to challenge yourself
B. feel it hard to change yourself
C. are unconfident about yourself
D. have a high opinion of yourself
47. According to the passage, our self-image ________.
A. have positive effects
B. are probably untrue
C. are often changeable
D. have different functions
48. How should you change your self-image according to the passage?
A. To keep a different image of others
B. To make your life successful.
C. To understand your own world.
D. To change the way you think.
49. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to prepare for your success.
B How to face challenges in your life.
C. How to build a positive self-image.
D. How to develop your good qualities.
50. Who are the intended readers of the passage?
A. Adolescents. B. Parents.
C. Educators. D. Grandparents
D
Over the past 300 years, 1.5 billion hectares (公顷) of forest have been lost, resulting in biodiversity loss, desertification, and increased flooding risks.
In the book Treewilding ecologist Jake Robinson explains while the solution to forest clearing might appear straightforward—simply plant millions of trees—the reality is far more confusing. Random tree planting can threaten ecosystems and the livelihoods of local communities.
This charming book mainly reveals how a well-developed approach is required — one that integrates (融入) the latest scientific advancements, for instance. Treewilding asks us to reflect on our interconnectedness (相互联系) with the woods, a realization that is perhaps the biggest “secret” to restoring nature.
Tree-planting initiatives have exploded since the turn of the century. Globally, the area of planted forests rose from 170 million hectares in 1990 to 293 million hectares in 2024. However, unless thoroughly researched and well organized, tree planting can backfire.
Often, only one type of tree is planted across pieces of land. This reduces biodiversity, in terms of plant species and the wildlife and micro-organisms associated with them. Because trees of the same species can all fall victim to the same diseases, a whole forest can be wiped out at once. Moreover, non-native trees can beat local species, disturbing the local balanced ecosystems.
To solve environmental crises, Robinson advocates a more informed strategy. He speaks to Forrest Fleischman, a specialist in forest and environmental policy, who highlights how local people depend on forests for highly self-sufficient agricultural activities. Fleischman also proposes that locals know well what species are best suited to the environment and how these species are interconnected with the local wildlife and ecosystem.
The author also describes the concept of ecoacoustics (生态声学). The approach uses the sounds made by organisms including birds and bats to explore the composition of and changes in ecosystems. Working with ecoacoustics specialist Carlos Abrahams, Robinson concludes that as forests are recovered, the number of animals hidden in the soil increases, producing an “underground soundscape—a hidden symphony of life”.
Robinson ultimately emphasizes natural regeneration—just as a phoenix (a mythical bird) is reborn from its own ashes (灰烬), a damaged forest can regenerate itself.
51. What is the main focus of Jake Robinson’s Treewilding?
A. The importance of technology in modern agriculture.
B. The changes of global forests over the past 300 years.
C. Major benefits of maintaining healthy ecosystems.
D. Effective methods in solving the loss of forests.
52. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “backfire” in paragraph 4?
A. Lead to negative outcomes. B. Produce predictable results.
C. Facilitate relevant initiatives. D. Encourage sustainable growth.
53. What might Fleischman expect tree-planting organizers to do?
A. Increase the number of non-native species planted.
B. Standardize planting practices across different regions.
C. Take natives’ knowledge in planting processes into consideration.
D. Encourage locals to adopt advanced agricultural methods at once.
54. What insight can researchers gain through the ecoacoustics approach?
A. The economic benefits of forest recovery.
B. The health and biodiversity of ecosystems.
C. A better understanding of local soil composition
D. A potential change of forest temperature over time.
55. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Forest clearing poses a serious threat to us.
B. Repairing forests is more than just planting trees.
C. Natural regeneration is the key to ecosystem restoration.
D. The underground soundscape allows us to know nature better.

Thanksgiving Day was near, and the first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment—to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful. Most of the class might be considered not very well-off, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional treats of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her students’ art. And they were.
But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher’s true child of sadness, weak and melancholic. As other children played during break time, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.
Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.
His abstract image captured the imagination of his peers. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because the police protect and care for people. And so the discussion went—until the teacher almost forgot the young artist himself.
When the children had gone on to other assignments, she paused at Douglas’ desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and said softly, “It’s yours, teacher.”
She recalled the times she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, as she had the other students. How often had she said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.” Or, “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.” Or, “Let’s do this together.” Douglas was most thankful for his teacher’s hand.
Brushing aside a tear, she went on with her work.
In fact, people might not always say “thanks,” but they’ll remember the hand that reaches out.

Though they may buy tons of food, they seem somehow not to send the food into their mouths and employees find much food is left on the floor as if a food fight went on during the film.
C. Because Phillips spoke a strange language.

Good luck!

A. have positive effects
B. are probably untrue
C. are often changeable

D. To change the way you think.
49. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to prepare for your success.
B. How to face challenges in your life.

Over the past 300 years, 1.5 billion hectares (公顷) of forest have been lost, resulting in biodiversity loss, desertification, and increased flooding risks.
In the book Treewilding, ecologist Jake Robinson explains while the solution to forest clearing might appear straightforward—simply plant millions of trees—the reality is far more confusing.

【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了植树并不是想象的那么简单,要综合考虑当地的情况,不能一味地种植同一棵树种,要充分考虑当地物种和生态系统的平衡。
【51题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Over the past 300 years, 1.5 billion hectares (公顷) of forest have been lost, resulting in biodiversity loss, desertification, and increased flooding risks.(在过去300年里,15亿公顷森林消失,导致生物多样性丧失、荒漠化和洪水风险增加。)”以及第三段中“This charming book mainly reveals how a well-developed approach is required — one that integrates (融入) the latest scientific advancements, for instance.(这本引人入胜的书主要揭示了如何需要一个完善的方法——例如,一个整合了最新科学进展的方法。)”可知,杰克·罗宾逊的《Treewilding》这本书主要关注的是解决森林消失的有效方法。故选D项。
【52题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第五段中“Often, only one type of tree is planted across pieces of land. This reduces biodiversity, in terms of plant species and the wildlife and micro-organisms associated with them.(通常,一块土地上只种植一种树木。这减少了生物多样性,就植物物种以及与之相关的野生动物和微生物而言。)”可知,如果缺乏科学规划,只种植一种树木,会导致生物多样性减少,因此“backfire”意为“导致负面结果”。故选A项。
【53题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中“He speaks to Forrest Fleischman, a specialist in forest and environmental policy, who highlights how local people depend on forests for highly self-sufficient agricultural activities. Fleischman also proposes that locals know well what species are best suited to the environment and how these species are interconnected with the local wildlife and ecosystem.(他采访了森林和环境政策专家福里斯特·弗莱希曼(Forrest Fleischman),弗莱希曼强调了当地人如何依靠森林进行高度自给自足的农业活动。弗莱希曼还提出,当地人很清楚哪些物种最适合环境,以及这些物种如何与当地野生动物和生态系统相互联系。)”可知,弗莱希曼希望植树组织者考虑当地人在种植过程中的知识。故选C项。
【54题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“The author also describes the concept of ecoacoustics (生态声学) . The approach uses the sounds made by organisms including birds and bats to explore the composition of and changes in ecosystems. Working with ecoacoustics specialist Carlos Abrahams, Robinson concludes that as forests are recovered, the number of animals hidden in the soil increases, producing an “underground soundscape—a hidden symphony of life”.(作者还介绍了生态声学的概念。该方法利用鸟类和蝙蝠等生物发出的声音来探索生态系统的组成和变化。与生态声学专家卡洛斯·亚伯拉罕合作,罗宾逊得出结论,随着森林的恢复,隐藏在土壤中的动物数量增加,产生了一种“地下声景——一种隐藏的生命交响曲”。)”可推知,研究人员可以通过生态声学方法获得生态系统的健康和生物多样性这一见解。故选B项。
【55题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第三段中“This charming book mainly reveals how a well-developed approach is required — one that integrates (融入) the latest scientific advancements, for instance.(这本引人入胜的书主要揭示了如何需要一个完善的方法——例如,一个整合了最新科学进展的方法。)”和第四段中“However, unless thoroughly researched and well organized, tree planting can backfire.( 然而,除非进行彻底的调查和组织,否则植树可能会适得其反。)”可知,这本书主要介绍的是一种有效的森林恢复的方法,以及如何避免植物的弊端。故文章最好的标题是“修复森林不仅仅是植树”。故选B项。

阅读下列短文并回答问题
阅读下列短文并回答问题。
