Ron Davis Alvarez Ron Davis Alvarez, a product of Venezuela’s El Sistema, a program offering free classical music training to disadvantaged children, founded the Dream Orchestra in Sweden. This orchestra brings together over 400 people from more than 25 nationalities, ranging from 3 to 56 years old, including immigrants, refugees (难民), second-generation immigrants, and native Swedes. Alvarez’s initiative uses music as a tool for integration, friendship, self-expression, and rebuilding self-esteem (自尊) among refugees. Payton McGriff Payton McGriff, during her senior year at the University of Idaho, founded Style Her Empowered (SHE) after realizing the scoring cost of school uniforms for many girls in Togo. SHE began by hiring local seamstresses to make uniforms for 65 girls and evolved to create a “growing” uniform that adjusts to fit a girl for up to three years. Today, SHE supports 1,500 girls annually with free uniforms, school fees, supplies, tutoring, and more, while also providing employment and education opportunities for the women involved. Yamilée Toussaint Yamilée Toussaint combined her love for math and dance to create STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) From Dance, a nonprofit that integrates dance with STEM education to engage girls of color. Recognizing the underrepresentation of black women in her engineering field, Toussaint aimed to inspire girls of color in STEM. The program operates in nine US cities, offering free school and summer programs that combine dance routines with STEM elements, benefiting over 2,000 girls to date. 21. But for Ghaffar Pourazar, a British-American dual (双重的) citizen living in California, this legendary figure has been a part of his identity for decades. Pourazar’s lifelong passion for Peking Opera began by chance. In 1993, Pourazar attended a performance at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and was instantly captured. He went backstage right after the show and made friends with the Chinese performers. With their help, Pourazar was enrolled at an opera school. Just three months later, he left his life in Britain behind and moved to Beijing to train in the martial roles of the art. Starting as an adult was not easy, as Peking Opera is a complex mixture of vocal performance, mime, martial arts, dance and acrobatics (杂技). In addition to the physical demands, mastering the Chinese language posed another problem. “I was constantly reciting the subtitles and songs, whether I was eating, bathing, walking, or even dreaming,” Pourazar said. Pourazar believes that great art transcends (超越) languages. Over the years, he has devoted himself to introducing Peking Opera and Sun Wukong to international audiences. He has also been teaching courses and organizing workshops in the United-States, bringing Peking Opera to curious Western learners. To better connect with Western audiences and learners, he adapted some classic plays such as The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven into English versions and he also adapted Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream into Poking Opera. In recognition of his contributions, Pourazar received the Great Wall Friendship Award from the Beijing government in 2014. “Cultural exchange should be reciprocal (互惠的). I aim to blend my expertise in opera with my multicultural background to create enriching artistic experiences for the audiences,” said Pourazar. 24. What is the author’s purpose of writing paragraph 1? A. To prove Ghaffar Pourazar’s achievement. B. To introduce a cultural influence on an individual. C. To explain the cultural significance of Sun Wukong. D. To highlight the fascination of ancient Chinese tales. 25. What do we know about Pourazar’s experience of learning Peking Opera? A. Language was a significant barrier for him. B. The performers he met backstage taught him the art. C. Queen Elizabeth made him interested in Peking Opera. D. His enthusiasm for Peking Opera started at an early age. 26. Why did Pourazar adapt Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream into Peking Opera? A. To show off his talent in adapting different plays. B. To add more complexity to traditional opera forms. C. To prove that Peking Opera is superior to other art forms. D. To make Peking Opera more accessible to Western audiences. 27. Which of the following words best describe Pourazar? A. Determined and creative. B. Passionate and reserved. C. Humorous and charming. D. Traditional and cautious. C Self-confidence is trusting in our abilities or qualities. It’s usually seen as a good thing. But is it possible that we might benefit from a little less confidence in our beliefs? For many years, Dr. Mark Leary, a neuroscientist at Duke University in Durham, N.C., has studied the role of people’s beliefs in their behavior. He found overconfidence is very common, especially when it comes to what people believe to be true, and can lead us to disastrous decisions. In 1986, NASA believed that the risk of loss for any space flight was roughly l in 100,000. It was an overconfident belief and might have led to the explosion of the Challenger. The good news is that there’s a “vaccine (疫苗)” for overconfidence, and that’s what scientists call “intellectual humility” — recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong. A survey of 144 college students to measure their intellectual humility found that students who saw their thinking could be wrong tended to be more curious and more likely to seek out new knowledge. They ended up knowing more at the end of the day. But does it actually help you beyond that? To find out more, Dr. Tenelle Porter at Ball State University conducted a series of studies with high school students. She found that students with intellectual humility were much more likely to test themselves to see whether they really understood the material and seek out potential holes in their understanding. When they got test scores, they’d change their study strategies to improve their performance and master the material for the next test. Students who didn’t see their knowledge could be wrong might instead just sail through their studying and wouldn’t stop to ask themselves if they truly understood what they read, heard, or did. Such students thought they got a subject down pat, but when asked to explain it on a test, they found they didn’t actually understand as much as they had thought. Although it might be good for you, researchers recognize that questioning your beliefs can be truly hard. Still, it’s important to remember that questioning beliefs isn’t always about replacing old ones with new ones. If you find it hard to question a belief, try taking “baby steps”. 28. Why does the author mention the explosion of the Challenger? A. To express his sorrow for the loss. B. To give an example of overconfidence. C. To show the result of wrong operation. D. To stress the high risk of space flights. 29. What do we know about intellectual humility according to Porter’s research? A. It urged students to gain recognition. B. It encouraged students to take exams. C. It helped students to adjust learning methods. D. It motivated students to memorize knowledge. 30. What do the underlined words “got a subject down pat” mean in paragraph 5? A. Really enjoyed a subject. B. Put great effort into a subject. C. Fully mastered a subject. D. Benefited a lot from a subject. 31. What will probably be discussed in the following paragraphs? A. Why questioning our belief is hard. B. Why intellectual humility is helpful. C. How to become a confident person. D. How to practice intellectual humility. D My son just completed high school, and his departure for college marks a significant change for me. Among the things I’ll miss most are his lessons in teenage slang (俚语), which has offered me an accidental and useful portrait of how he and his generation see the world. The primary value of slang has been to create linguistic markers, a way to set you apart from other people. The terms change over time, but the meanings typically don’t — one generation’s “cool” becomes another’s “dope.” Members of my son’s generation have a vastly superior approach to slang. They have invented a language that responds to the new and distinct reality they face, a society characterized by collapsing institutions, erosions (削弱) in trust and a loss of faith in a shared sense of meaning. “Mid,” for example, in my son’s usage, describes things that are average or slightly below. You can’t really complain about them, but they produce no joy. Everything in Starbucks and airports falls into the category of “mid.” “Glazed” has a similarly impressive precision(精确), indicating the act of positively spinning a judgment on reality rather than complete lying. It is the perfect description of the way social media works, with everything taking on an artificially positive, unreal and not entirely trustworthy look. For example, beach photos on social media might make a destination look like paradise, yet they rarely show the crowded shores or bad weather that are part of the reality. My favorite slang word is “based,” often used to express agreement when someone states a controversial opinion. “Canada should join the United States,” one might say, to which someone else might reply, “Based.” To my ear, “based” is a perfect word to describe the informational chaos we inhabit. Slang has brought my son and me closer. It’s taught me that the current crop of teenagers created a language to describe the flawed (有缺陷的) reality we’ve abandoned them to, and in doing so they’ve proved themselves less misguided and more innovative than we were. 32. What does teenage slang reveal about young people? A. Their need to fit in with peers. B. Their response to the flawed reality. C. Their aim to challenge social norms. D. Their desire to outdo older generations. 33. Which comment on a crowded beach reflects the underlined word “glazed”? A. “What a disaster!” B. “Not crowded at all.” C. “A wonderful getaway!” D. “At least we found a spot.” 34. Which word best describes the tone of the text? A. Appreciative. B. Analytical. C. Instructive. D. Cautious. 35. What is a suitable title for the text? A. Teenagers’ Fondness of Nonsense Words B. Modern Slang Tells Us about Youth Culture C. The Impact of Teen Slang on Social Relations D. Teens Have Invented a Language for the World 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 In some US states, gym class is changing. Many schools are focusing on getting students ready for life after high school. They are looking for ways to leave even the least athletic kids with the will and skills to keep moving. For gym teachers, that means less focus on who is best at a sport. It means less rope climbing and dodgeball(躲避球). 36 A New Model In one New York school district, there is no “gym” class. 37 They include dance, self- defense and rock climbing. They include mountain biking, in-line skating, and boating. “We want our kids…, to be active for life,” said Ron Whitcomb. He manages the physical education, or PE, program for the Victor, New York, school district. A US law passed in 2015 increased the importance of health and fitness in education. It also gave more funding to PE programs. Whitcomb’s program started before that law passed. 38 Connecticut, Vermont and Michigan are all planning to improve PE’s place in their schools. Outside the Gym Tracy Krause teaches PE in Washington State. For a few years, she has taken students fly-fishing and rock climbing. 39 It combines PE, English, and science into one program. “We want kids to leave with a plan for the future,” Krause said. “I think the same needs to be true about their health.” Lifelong Skills In Washington D.C. , all second-graders learn to ride bikes. Fourth and seventh-graders learn parkour(跑酷). Parkour teaches students to jump, climb and roll in the fastest way they can. Sixth- graders learn how to read a compass. High schoolers swim. 40 Teachers hope to keep students liking, not hating, PE. That means finding sports or activities they enjoy. A.They are also cutting back on team sports. B.It means more bike riding and outdoor hikes. C.Other schools are now following his program. D.Instead there is a list of different fitness classes. Every day, he eagerly logged in, diving into the vibrant world of the game. He quickly became the expert among his friends, showing them the hidden tools and tricks he had discovered. Their game group chat always buzzed with excitement. However, one day while playing online, his enthusiasm turned into frustration. As he instructed his friends on what to do, he shouted at them when they made mistakes. “Michael, stop yelling,” his friend Mark said over the headset, sounding annoyed. “Yeah, I’m just trying to have fun here,” Jay added. Michael felt a wave of frustration wash over him. The joy of the game was slipping away, drowned out by the constant noise of his friends. After that incident, Michael decided to play on his own. He thought it would be better to focus without them. Often, he was deep into a game when his friends wanted to start a new one. Ignoring their messages, he continued his solo adventures. As summer vacation began, Michael spent entire days lost in Legend of Starfell. The game’s colorful landscapes and exciting quests pulled him in completely. Meanwhile, his friends made plans to hang out, but he chose to stay home and play games instead, thinking he was having more fun. By the end of summer, Michael’s progress had slowed. Even though he was ranked high, he couldn’t reach the “elite pro” level, and the game started to feel dull. The chat, once lively, had gone silent for weeks. His friends had stopped calling him, and when he tried to reach out, they were often busy or uninterested. As summer came to an end, Michael felt a deep sense of loneliness. He realized he had spent so much time gaming that he had nothing except tired eyes and a heavy heart. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150词左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。 Feeling empty, he knew it was time for a change. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The game group chat lit up with their voices again. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始,请看听力部分第一节。 excuse me, can you please tell me how much the shirt is? It’s great pleasure for me to deliver a speech here. The topic is about the greatest scientist---Professor Yuan Longping. Details about him are following. Yuan Longping, considered as “father of hybrid rice”, was born in 1930. Dedicated to the scientific research into hybrid rice all his life, Yuan’s efforts have paid off and he succeeds in applying his theory about hybrid rice into practice and speeding up the production of rice in China, helping feed countless people. As to my comments on Professor Yuan, I consider him as one of the greatest scientists at home and abroad. He is a person with responsibility and good and high morals, deserving to be respected by everyone. That’s all. Thanks for your listening . Feeling empty, he knew it was time for a change. Michael closed the game and took a deep breath. He realized that chasing rankings had cost him real connections. Determined to fix things, he messaged his friends, apologizing for his past behavior. To his relief, they responded warmly. He suggested meeting up in person, and they agreed. Over pizza, they laughed about old gaming memories and made new plans— not just for games, but for hikes, movies, and even study sessions. Michael felt lighter, understanding that true joy came from balance and friendship, not just pixels on a screen. The game group chat lit up with their voices again. One evening, Michael sent a funny meme to the group. Soon, replies poured in— jokes, inside references, and even invites for a casual match. This time, he played differently: no yelling, just encouragement. They lost a battle but laughed it off, remembering why they loved gaming together. The chat stayed active, now filled with both game strategies and real-life updates. Michael smiled, realizing that games were best when shared. His rank didn’t matter as much as the friendships he’d almost lost— and was now rebuilding. 听力原文 Text 1 W: David, do you want to have an apple pie or fried bread for lunch? M: No, Mom. I need high energy for my PE class in the afternoon. How about some fried meat or a chicken hamburger? Text 2 W: Hello, Mr. Johnson. This is Doctor White’s office. You are scheduled to meet the doctor at 3:00 pm. M: Oh, thank you for reminding me. I’ll be there as soon as I finish my lunch. W: OK. See you then. Text 3 W: Mr. Robert, Mr. James would like to listen to your opinion on his marketing plan. M: I’m meeting my important customer. Would you please send the documents about the plan to my e-mail box? I’ll read them during my lunchtime and talk with Mr. James in the afternoon. Text 4 M: My wife and I are thinking about taking our parents on a vacation. Do you have any suggestions about where to go? W: Why not try some historical places of interest? They can have fun there. Text 5 M: I’m so excited to hear this speaker. I can’t believe the famous film star is visiting our little town! I want him to sign on the cover of his book for me. W: I’m not sure who the film star is. I’m just here for a free T-shirt. Text 6 M: It’s Monday today. I have so much schoolwork to do: a book report that I must hand in tomorrow, a math test on Wednesday, and a paper that I have to finish before Friday, W: Sam, you’re in ninth grade now. It is normal that you have a lot more schoolwork than before. Can I help you with any of the tasks? M: I need someone to help me work out some math problems and check my paper, but these can be left to be done tomorrow. I have to work on my book report tonight. Can you check it for me? W: Sure. M: Thank you. Text 7 M: Can I help you, Madam? W: I’m looking for a two-bedroom flat in the city. How much does it cost on average in different areas? M: Well, flats in the eastern part of the city are the most expensive,$580 a month. In western and southern areas, $280 a month. The north, $180 a month. W: What are the advantages and disadvantages of the flats? M: In the south you've got a beach, but there are many factories alongside the beach. There are lots of parks all around the eastern part of the city. The northern area is made up of wetlands. It’s beautiful but it has poor transportation. So, few people have any real wish to live in the neighborhoods there. W: Can you show me some flats in western and southern areas? M: OK. Here are some photos. And I’ll search for more information on the computer. Text 8 W: I feel terrible. I really need to relax. Do you know any good ways to fight stress? M:Yeah, in fact, I read in a health magazine that you should drink two cups of lemon tea every day to fight stress. W: Lemon tea? M:That’s right. Lemon tea makes you feel more relaxed. And also, you should eat low-stress food like apples and grapes. W: Sounds very strange. I guess hamburgers and French fries cause stress, right? M: Yep. Hamburgers are high-stress food. W: Well, I guess I need to change my diet. Text 9 W: Um... Mr. Brown? I’m part of “Ears to Hear”. M: You are not Trevor. W: My name is Jessica Woods. I’m a new member of the volunteer program and I can read you anything you like. M: Actually, I just received some letters, but they are hard for me to read because I can’t see clearly. Could you read them to me? W: Of course. Shall I start with this one? It’s from Bella. M: That’s my granddaughter in college in Hawaii. W: Wow. Here’s what she says: Dear grandpa, I’m terribly sorry to hear you are in hospital and I want you to know I’m praying for you. I’ll come to visit you as soon as my exams are over. And...
