Growing up
Unit 1
A
(选自译林版选择性必修第四册 Unit 1)
Honoured guests, teachers and students,it is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you here today and present my thoughts on this special occasion.
Students, the time has arrived for you to fully accept your passage into adulthood.I have seen you grow from nervous Senior 1 students into confident young adults, who sit before me today, ready to embrace the next phase of your lives. You must be both excited and anxious about the new experiences that are in store for you.Don’t worry, for you are all responsible young people, well prepared and well equipped to successfully manage the challenges of the years ahead.
At school, you have gradually understood the importance of a well-developed sense of responsibility. You accept that you are responsible for your successes and your failures.Hopefully, you have learnt to treat responsibility not as a weight that burdens you,but rather as a foundation which will support your future development.A ship without an anchor is at the mercy of the waves and winds;likewise,a person who has no sense of responsibility is at the mercy of their own careless and thoughtless behaviour.
As students, you must take your studies seriously and accept responsibility for your own learning. This means meeting deadlines for your schoolwork, following your teachers’ guidance, and of course, always aiming for academic excellence. However, your responsibilities go far beyond your studies. As you go through your daily life, you will encounter many difficult situations where things may go wrong.Instead of being quick to blame others, analyse the problem, and if it is indeed your own fault,be ready to admit your mistake and then correct it.This way,you practise the virtue of courage.Always give your best in whatever you set out to do,however difficult that might be.This way,
you practise the virtue of determination.Be honest by saying what you mean and by meaning what you say. This way,you practise the virtue of integrity.Taking responsibility in all aspects of your everyday life, therefore, will help build a strong character.
Apart from personal development, assuming responsibility for your actions is also important for the betterment of society.Society is an organic whole, and as social beings,we have a responsibility to make a contribution. You may have heard the story of a small boy who tried to save starfish left on the beach after a storm,by throwing them back into the sea.Passers-by told him that he was wasting his time, for he could not possibly save them all. However, the boy was not discouraged, believing that he could make a difference to the ones that he saved. As a result, the passers-by felt inspired and joined him in saving the starfish.Similarly,
the little things you do can make a difference! For example, picking up garbage around your neighbourhood contributes to a cleaner environment.Reporting a speeding car helps ensure road safety.Being energy-efficient leads to savings of our precious natural resources.Doing volunteer work at a local nursing home brings love and warmth to the elderly.Just like the “starfish boy”,you may even inspire people around you to do the same, which is an added bonus.Working together,we have the power to gradually but continuously advance our society.
So,dear students, take your first step into the adult world by accepting your responsibilities,so that adulthood will be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for both you and those around you.Sometimes, responsibilities may weigh heavily on you. However, just as the Chinese saying goes,“Jade is good-for-nothing if not carved.” A man cannot be perfected without trials.Sow the seeds of success today and your harvest will be great tomorrow.I wish you every success in your adult life!

As teenagers grow up,they become more
independent and start making their own decisions.
However, during this period,it can be easy for
some of them to form bad habits. These bad habits,
if left unchecked, could lead to more serious ones when they become adults. For example, some of them may become involved in tobacco or alcohol abuse, which can lead to physical and mental health problems. To prevent harmful habits like these from dominating a teenager’s life is essential. They must learn to recognise bad habits early and make appropriate changes.
To change bad habits is never easy, even with many attempts. There is a famous saying based on the philosophy of Aristotle:“We are what we repeatedly do.” In many ways, our lifestyle is the sum of choices we have made.We make a choice to do something, and then we repeat it over and over again.Soon that choice becomes automatic and forms a habit that is much harder to change. The good news is that we can change,if we understand how habits work.
According to modern psychology,we must first learn about the “habit cycle”,which works like this:
·Firstly, there is a “cue”,an action, event,or situation that acts as a signal to do something.
·Secondly, there is a “routine”,the regular action you take in response to the cue.
·Thirdly, there is the “reward”,the good thing or feeling we get from the routine.
For example, when we feel unhappy (cue),we eat lots of unhealthy snacks (routine),which makes us feel happy (reward). The reward makes us much more likely to continue the cycle, and the bad habit of relying on unhealthy snacks is formed.
To facilitate a positive change in our bad habits,we must first examine our bad habit cycles and then try to adapt them.We can do this by combining the information from our habit cycles with our own positive ideas. For example,we could try to replace a negative routine with something more positive. So,when we feel unhappy again (cue),rather than eat snacks,we could listen to some of our favourite music instead (routine),which will make us feel relaxed (reward).Aside from changing bad habits,we can also use the habit cycle to create good habits. For example, when we come to an escalator (cue),our normal routine is to ride it,but we could change this routine into something more positive by taking the stairs instead.
Many of us try to change bad habits quickly, and if we are not successful straight away,we often become pessimistic and give up.In fact, the most successful way to change is not suddenly, but over a period of time.As the Chinese philosopher Lao Zi wrote,“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” One step seems small, but it is essential. To reach the goal of change,a person must show some discipline and repeatedly take many small steps. After all,it is not easy to break bad habits.
For young people, there is plenty of time to change bad habits. However, there is no “magic pill” or delete button that will help you;you have to think about your bad habits and decide on some changes. You have the power to build a happy and healthy life full of good habits!

Jenn Larson was just 14 years old when she took over the bookkeeping for her family’s dairy farm near Firth,Idaho. She soon saw firsthand how challenging it was for her parents, who lacked any college education,to properly manage the unpredictable earnings of farming. This started a lifelong passion for finance, and it led her down an unexpected path to becoming a role model she never had.
Yet,such ambitions ran in obvious contrast to everything familiar to her.“I didn’t have any advisors,” Larson says.“I didn’t have anyone to look up to for a professional example. All the women I associated with were stay-at-home moms.” Despite having parents who couldn’t fully understand her ambitions,Larson went to the BYU Marriott School, where she earned a business degree and focused much of her coursework on international finance.
Larson worked for seven years as a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual, advising clients on important financial decisions.Larson returned to BYU Marriott in 2008 to earn an MBA,and accepted a position in the school as an assistant professor following her graduation. For more than a decade,Larson has taught finance classes to undergraduate and MBA students. While she teaches finance,Larson tries to help her students see how mastering finance principles can also impact their personal lives.
Constantly balancing motherhood and work,Larson makes adjustments to the way she teaches. She gave birth to her first three children in three years while teaching at BYU Marriott, wondering at times if labor might start while in front of a class full of students. At one time,Larson taught online classes from her dining room table while taking care of a newborn and other young children at home.
As a female instructor in the often male-dominated finance industry,Larson works to inspire other women who seek a similar path to hers.Larson became the role model that she never had—the example that a 14-year-old girl staring at a farming expense sheet couldn’t find. Now,Larson’s children and students will always have that example.
