M:I can’t.I will have a big maths test tomorrow.I have to prepare for it.
Text 3
W:It looks like you’re having a hard time with that programme,Larry. Why don’t you use the method that I gave in the class yesterday?
M:I was absent.I’ll ask one of my classmates to send it to me.
Text 4
W:If we want to win the game this Friday,we need to come up with a plan now. They beat us every year.
M:We need to use teamwork more.John is our best player, but we can’t give him the ball every time.
Text 5
W:Excuse me.I’m trying to pay the parking, but all I have is dollar bills.Could you spare any change?
M:I’m sorry, madam. But our store policy is not to give out change unless you buy something.
W:OK.
Text 6
W:Tim,I saw you running from the bus stop this morning.Your mother and father wouldn’t be happy seeing you do that.
M:I was late for school though.
W:You need to be more careful when you cross the street. You need to walk during the right time and in the right places.
M:But I’m very fast.
W:Are you even listening to me? It is dangerous. It is also against the law.
M:But I hate waiting for the lights to change and the cars to pass by.I don’t want to be late.
W:It is important to obey the rules, but your safety is more important.I don’t want to see any one of my students get hurt.
Text 7
W:Sorry,Jim.I won’t be able to make it to the dinner tomorrow night.I’ll be busy volunteering at the library during that time.
M:That’s interesting,Carol. Most people I know volunteer by collecting garbage or something. What do you do at the library when you volunteer? Are they short on employees who put away books?
W:Nothing like that.I just read the children’s books and act out some of the stories for them. It’s very fun and it doesn’t take long, maybe one or two hours.
M:How often do you do that?
W:I do it on Monday,Wednesday and Friday every week. You should come to help me with it one time.

M:It’s said that they can reduce the risks of high blood pressure, heart disease and certain cancers.
W:Maybe I will start including them in our meals. Are there any foods on the list that we don’t have yet?
M:Nuts and greens are something we already eat plenty of.And although our type of rice—the white kind—isn’t on the list, brown rice is.

W:Doesn’t the bank’s owner need to make the decision to give you your money back?
M:No.I just have to prove that these purchases were not made by me.
W:I hope you can fix this problem soon.Something similar happened to my husband’s mother recently. She was tricked into giving away some important information over the phone.
M:I think the person who stole my information got it from the Internet.I bought a collection of movies recently.I won’t be doing that again unless the website is sure to be safe. It’s honestly my fault for being careless.
W:You can never be too careful.Well, your problem is inspiring me to look into protecting my account better.I think I can pay my bank more to help me.

Last year,my Singapore-based sister insisted my mother and I join her for the Christmas. My mum,a fearless woman, would get strangely nervous on flights.Perhaps the only thing that convinced her to overcome her fears was the chance to piece together our declining bond.
Growing up,moments with Mum were painfully short-lived because I spent most time at the boarding school, reuniting only during the holidays.Every year, she would eagerly await my return. Those cherished moments were gradually disappearing as I moved away for university.Soon, our relationship became tense. She seemed unable to understand me and her stubborn and old-fashioned advice forced me to shut myself.
I assumed the immersive(沉浸式) exhibits at Art Science Museum would refresh my mother, who was an art student. However,I was surprised when she just turned her nose up at the Bruges Whale,a sculpture using plastic waste to raise awareness about ocean pollution.“It’s art,Mum! Be more appreciative.” I defended.
Disheartened by the distance between us,I led her to the kid’s zone.We signed up for a joint sketching(素描) activity, hoping that would help us connect. As our creative juices flowed, our faded relationship began to shift to something sincere and beautiful.
“Look!” she excitedly pointed towards a digital screen that displayed our creations.“That one’s ours.” Mum went up and reached out, touching the fish as it moved its tail back and forth in the virtual tank.
Looking around,I saw children sharing moments with their parents, and my own childhood flashed back. That rare instance where she let slip an inner innocence and delight at a new experience revealed the little girl in her,who was like me,had lost a vital connection to responsibilities of motherhood.
“Our time together was like that of friends. You were my mother, and I’m a child following you around.” My mum said to me with a smile.

Small mammals will have a hard time surviving the stressors associated with climate change, according to a new study from the University of Southern Denmark. The experts found that large,long-lived animals are better able to cope with extreme weather such as long-time drought and heavy rainfall.
The researchers analyzed historical population variations among 157 mammal species from around the world. These fluctuations(波动) were compared with weather and climate date from the same time period. The results are providing new insight into how animals respond to extreme weather. In particular, the experts have identified which animal populations will be the hardest hit by climate change.
“We can see a clear pattern: Animals that live a long time and have few offspring are less vulnerable(脆弱的) when extreme weather hits than animals that live for a short time and have many offspring,” said study Professor Owen.
Large animals that live longer can cope better with an extreme event such as a persistent drought because these animals have the option to wait until conditions improve to reproduce. The same weather event would affect small mammals differently,as food sources like insects, flowers, and fruits would disappear quickly.
On the other hand, populations of small mammals may also take advantage when weather conditions improve by producing many offspring.
“These small mammals react quickly to extreme weather, and it goes both ways.Their weakness to extreme weather should therefore not be equated(等同) with a risk of extinction. Our analysis helps predict how different animal species might respond to future climate change based on their general characteristics.” said study co-author Jackson. He emphasized that the ability of animals to endure climate change is not the only factor for their extinction.“Habitat destruction, pollution, poaching and invasive species are factors that threaten many animal species—in many cases even more than climate change,” he added.

For many of us,there’s nothing better than burying our head in a good book.Whether it’s an adventure story or a biography of someone’s amazing life,it’s good to read a book to switch off from the distractions(分心) of everyday life. 36 It may seem obvious that reading is beneficial to our health. It can be educational and broaden the mind.A good novel can make us happy or make us cry as we empathize with characters. 37 This power of reading books was first recognized a few years ago by the British charity Reading Agency, which published a list of books that doctors could offer to patients, dealing with topics from depression, dementia(精神错乱) to chronic pain.
Professor Philip Davis, the author of a book called Reading for Life, studied people in reading groups and found that it’s reading literature—only written works thought to have artistic value—that has the best effect.“When reading something for pleasure,” he said,“the brain begins to work from different parts. It gets excited. It gets pre-emotional. 38 ”
In our smartphone time,we tend to abandon a good book and play with our phones instead. But opening up a book could be a simple way to help maintain our mental health. 39 And it may allow you to see that awkward situation you’ve been anxious about for long from someone else’s view.
40 Refer to the Reading Agency’s book list,or you could read book reviews, visit a library or bookshop or ask a friend.Once you’ve found the right one, you’ll be fascinated!

(2024·江苏苏州高二期中)
Alex rode his bike on his way home, and Johnson’s Pond came into view.
Sometimes his dad took him canoeing(划独木舟) there, and Alex loved it.The pond was always so alive with activity, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles(乌龟) sunbathing on sunny rocks.Alex was curious about the turtles he saw. When it was too rainy to go canoeing,he and his dad would go to the library to check out books on turtles.
Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day.He decided he would ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again.
Just then Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be.He jumped off to have a look.It turned out that it was actually a large turtle making its way across the road.Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
Out of the corner of his eye,he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road.Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up because snapping turtles have a powerful bite and they could even bite off someone’s finger! What could he do?
Thinking fast,he started waving both hands wildly.“Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to a stop.
“Are you alight,Alex?” It was his neighbor,Mrs Ramos.
“I’m fine,Mrs Ramos,” said Alex.“I’m just trying to save a turtle. It’s probably going to lay egg.”
“Oh,yeah. It’s spring,” said Mrs Ramos.“So,I guess a lot of turtles need to lay their eggs in the grass across the road.” Then she waved goodbye and drove off.
Alex thought about what Mrs Ramos had said.“There would probably be more turtles trying to cross the road at this spot!” he realized. But he couldn’t stand there all day trying to stop cars.He looked around and a road sign caught his eye.And then his face brightened.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad.
The next morning,Dad and Alex drove to the pond with the wooden sign in the car.
参考范文
He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad.“Dad,can I have some old wood to make a wooden sign?” Alex asked eagerly.Hearing Alex’s full explanation,Dad then smiled knowingly. Then the father and son devoted themselves to cutting a wood board into the right “T” shape. After that,Alex wrote down a line with red paint on both sides of the sign, reading “Slow! Turtles Crossing!” Work all done, they put the wooden sign into their car and went for dinner.
The next morning,Dad and Alex drove to the pond with the wooden sign in the car.Upon arriving, they sprang into action.Alex pulled the sign to the side of the road and held it tightly while Dad hammered it into the ground.Sweat dripping into their eyes, they worked with passion until the sign got fixed firmly in the ground.Alex stepped back and surveyed their work.“Slow! Turtles Crossing!” he read out loud and grinned.“Ready to go canoeing?” “Yes!” Alex blurted out, rushing to the pond with pride.
