In primary school, I learned to write using chalks. Letters felt like delightful but meaningless patterns, another kind of drawing. In secondary school, art was my favourite subject. I loved it so much that I thought I was good at it. For the art O-level exam I had to present an oil painting. I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over-confident. Now I’d been declared talentless. But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems. Still, I went to exhibitions often. I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterized as childish doodling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art. However, I couldn’t let myself have a go at actually doing it. I took oil painting as the taboo(禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice. One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so real that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Finally, I bought some oil paints. Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades-long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy. This time around, I can accept my limitations but keep going. Becoming a successful painter calls for being resolute. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments. 24. How did the author feel about the result of the art exam? A. Scared. B. Worried. C. Discouraged. D. Pleased. 25. In her 30s, the author _______. A. looked for a painting career B. avoided oil painting practice C. enjoyed abstract painting D. practice child doodles 26. Which word would best describe the author’s dream? A. Encouraging. B. Relaxing. C. Annoying. D. Boring. 27. What can we learn from this passage? A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Dreams always show real life truly. C. Hard work alone ensures success. D. Creative expression involves confidence. C 25. B 26. A 27. 根据第二段中“I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over- confident. Now I’d been declared talentless.(我觉得很难,但仍希望能通过测试。我没有通过,而且成绩很低。我过于自信了。现在,我被宣布为毫无(油画)天赋的人了)”并结合下文中作者多年不碰油画的经历可推知,作者对美术考试的结果感到气馁。故选C。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art.(在我30多岁时,我结交了画家朋友们,学到了看待艺术的新方法)”和“I took oil painting as the taboo (禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice.(我把油画作为禁忌的高级形式,不允许我练习)”可知,作者在30多岁时回避练习油画。 根据第四段中“The dream felt so real that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost.(这个梦给我的感觉是如此的真实,它震撼了我。它是能量的一种形式,让我找回我失去了的东西)”可知,作者的梦激励作者练习油画,因此这个梦是鼓舞人心的。故选A。 根据第六段中“Becoming a successful painter calls for being resolute. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much.(成为一名成功的画家需要有决心。我意识到我总是害怕想要得太多)”及文章内容可知,本文主要讲述了作者一直喜欢绘画,但中学时由于油画测试成绩较低,作者对绘画失去了信心。在40岁出头时,一个梦让作者重拾画油画的信心并接受了自身局限性的故事。由此可推知,我们能从文章中学到创作性表达需要自信。故选D。 C A new study, a project of the researchers from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, finds that a fitness tracker (健康追踪器) probably does not help with weight loss. The trackers are designed to record your physical activity. They are usually worn around the wrist (手腕), where they record a person’s heart rate. The research team looked at two groups of individuals. The first wore a fitness tracker and took part in health consultation (咨询) with experts for the best weight-loss plan. The researchers compared this group with people who only got health consultation. The study found that those only speaking with the health experts lost nearly 6 kilograms, but those using a fitness tracker lost only 3.5 kilograms. John Jakicic, the lead researcher, questioned the use of these trackers for weight loss. The study involved 470 subjects aged between 18 and 35. Some of them were overweight, while others were considered obese (肥胖的). Over three fourths of the subjects were women. All the subjects were told to increase physical activity and go on a low-calorie diet. They had their weight measured once every six months. After six months, researchers divided the subjects into two groups: one continued with monthly consulting, while members of the other group were given a fitness tracker. Eighteen months later, both groups showed great improvements in fitness, physical activity and diet, with no big difference between groups. However, when it came to losing weight, the people who only spoke with experts lost nearly twice as much weight. Jakicic said, “The study’s findings are important because effective long-term treatments are needed to deal with America’s obesity.” “More information is needed,” he added, “to learn how to best use these trackers to help adults who want to lose weight.” 28. What were both groups of people in the study asked to do? A. Go on a high-calorie diet. B. Wear a fitness tracker. C. Record their heart rates. D. Consult experts. 29. What can we infer about the study mentioned in the text? A. The study went on for about two years. B. More than 120 men took part in the study. C. Health consulting makes little difference to weight-loss. D. There are great differences in health between both groups. 30. Which of the following is TRUE about fitness trackers? A. Wearing a fitness tracker is useful for keeping slim. B. Fitness trackers might be effective if used in a better way. C. The present fitness trackers cannot record data accurately. D. Fitness trackers should be immediately given up as a weight-loss tool. 31. What’s the purpose of the text? A. To compare two different weight-loss methods. B. To explain the advantages of health consultation. C. To report the findings of a study on fitness trackers and weight loss. D. To encourage the use of fitness trackers combined with expert advice. 28. D 29. A 30. B 31. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering (基因工程) to make them into partners in the fight against the disease. For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations. “But that approach is short-term,” says Anthony James, a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California, Irvine, “because mosquitoes are very tough little insects, and their populations can quickly increase.” Therefore, James and his colleagues want to try a different approach: making mosquitoes themselves into malaria-fighting warriors, which is completely different from traditional ways of controlling malaria. To understand how it works, it helps to understand the life cycle of malaria. The malaria pathogen (病原体) is a parasite (寄生虫) that grow inside humans. It’s passed via mosquitoes that move from person to person, sucking blood. “If we can make the mosquitoes difficult for the pathogens to survive, we can wipe out the disease,” he says. But making mosquitoes uninviting to malaria is a Herculean task. To solve the problem, the team used a gene-editing technique called CRISPR. They started with genes from mice, whose immune systems do fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them to the mosquitoes. It turned out the gene-edited mosquitoes worked very well. They reduced the number of parasites in the mosquito before they were passed to a human host. James’ team are now working on planning a field trial, which he hopes could be done on an island or in another isolated location. But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. “There’s no need to engineer a mosquito,” says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth. Perls points out that natural ways to reduce malaria appear to be showing promise, as does a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease. “Why take unnecessary risks and use mosquitoes that can’t be controlled once sent into the wild?” she asks. 32. What can we know from the second and third paragraphs? A. Mosquitoes can reproduce quickly. B. Mosquitoes can be easily controlled. C. Mosquitoes have killed thousands of people. D. Mosquitoes have been used to fight against malaria. 33. What does the underlined phrase “a Herculean task” in Para.4 mean? A. A great comfort. B. A tough job. C. A narrow escape. D. A key factor. 34. What is environmentalists’ attitude towards this new approach? A. Unconcerned. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Unclear. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Preventing Malaria with a New Vaccine. B. Curing Malaria with Gene-edited mosquitoes. C. Limiting Malaria by Controlling Mosquito Populations D. Controlling Malaria by Engineering Mosquitoes’ Genes 【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. 【32题详解】 推理判断题,根据文章第二段“For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations. “But that approach is short-term,” says Anthony James, a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California, Irvine, “because mosquitoes are very tough little insects, and their populations can quickly increase.” (多年来公共卫生官员一直试图通过控制蚊子数量来限制这种疾病。“但这种方法是短期的,”加州大学欧文分校生物学和遗传学教授Anthony James说,“因为蚊子是非常顽强的小昆虫,它们的数量可以迅速增加。”)”可知,蚊子的繁殖速度很快。故选A。 根据下一段“To solve the problem, the team used a gene-editing technique called CRISPR. They started with genes from mice, whose immune systems do fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them to the mosquitoes. (为了解决这个问题,该团队使用了一种名为CRISPR的基因编辑技术。他们用老鼠的基因进行实验,老鼠的免疫系统确实能对抗人类疟疾,他们改造了这些基因,然后把它们交给蚊子。) ”可知,为了解决这个问题,团队需要使用基因编辑技术,由此可知,这个问题是一个很难解决的问题,故选B。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. “There’s no need to engineer a mosquito,” says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth .(但是,改变野生动物的基因并不受环保人士的欢迎。“没有必要改造蚊子”非营利组织地球之友新兴技术项目的高级项目经理Dana Pers说。).”可知,环保人士对于这种新方法的态度是不赞成的。故选C。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Mosquitoes (蚊子) carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering (基因工程) to make them into partners in the fight against the disease.(蚊子携带疟疾,每年导致数千人死亡。现在,一些研究人员正试图利用基因工程技术使它们成为对抗这种疾病的伙伴。)”可知,文章主要一些研究人员正试图利用基因工程技术使蚊子成为对抗这种疾病的伙伴。因此本文的最佳标题是D项“通过改造蚊子基因控制疟疾”。故选D。 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Maybe you are an average student. My classmates called me“Mr. Champion(冠军)”. One day, there was a sports meeting at my school. Well-prepared for the running competition, I took part in all the races: the 400m, 200m, and 100m. A large number of people gathered to watch. The crowd was eager to see the running races because they were the most exciting events. When the 400m race started, all the boys ran fast. Unsurprisingly, I finished first and received a big round of applause(掌声). Although it was tiring, I felt proud and was on top of the world. In the 200m race, I ran at full speed and finished first once again. The crowd gave me thunderous applause. I jumped all over the place and even didn’t think it was necessary to shake hands with other racers. Then came the 100m race. Discouraged by the previous races, most boys gave up except one: a boy named Matt, who looked a little clumsy(笨拙的) but was a determined racer. The judge came to Matt and explained the situation, asking if he would like to give up too. Wild with joy, I thought I would win the championship without effort. However, to everyone’s surprise, Matt decided to finish the race. I sniffed(嗤之以鼻), “It’s a waste of time. I’m sure he doesn’t even know where the finish line is.” The race between the two of us began. On hearing the starting gun, both Matt and I ran toward the finish line. I tried to stand up, but there was a sharp pain in my leg. My dream of winning for the third time was over. The crowd’s cheers changed into shocked gasps. I felt my face burn with shame and frustration. Just moments ago, I was about to win; now I was lying helpless on the track, unable to move. To my surprise, Matt didn’t rush past. Instead, he stopped beside me with concern. “Are you okay? Let me help you.” He said as he reached out his hand. With his help, I slowly stood up. Leaning on his shoulder, I hopped painfully toward the finish line. My heart was filled with a mixture of gratitude and regret. The audience began to clap—not for a winner, but for two boys who supported each other and crossed the finish line together. That day, I realized that the heart of a true champion doesn’t lie in winning, but in kindness and sportsmanship. 词汇激活 行为类 ①站起来:stand up/get to one’s feet/rise to one’s feet ②冲过去:rush past/dash past/hurry past ③越过终点线:cross the finish line/get across the finish line 情绪类 ①令某人吃惊的是:to one’s surprise/to one’s astonishment ②沮丧:frustration/discouragement/dismay 【点睛】【高分句型1】He said as he reached out his hand. B When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at home. C A new study, a project of the researchers from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, finds that a fitness tracker (健康追踪器) probably does not help with weight loss. B To explain the advantages of health consultation. C. To report the findings of a study on fitness trackers and weight loss. D. To encourage the use of fitness trackers combined with expert advice. D Mosquitoes (蚊子) carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Soon I sped up and left Matt behind. Just 30 meters before reaching the finish line, I was expecting to receive applause for the third time when I suffered a leg spasm(抽筋). I fell hard to the ground. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With his help, I slowly stood up. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
