Yesterday, my 6-year-old son taught me a valuable lesson that stayed with me for hours. It might sound surprising, but he taught me a powerful lesson.
A few weeks ago, I had to travel for work, and I couldn’t spend much time with my son. Even though he is a bit stubborn (固执的), he’s growing up fast. That’s when the lesson happened. While I was eating dinner, he was in the bath, and suddenly he started crying. I asked him what happened, and he said, “Shampoo (洗发水) got in my eyes.”
I got really worried and rushed into the bathroom. I tried to help by splashing (泼) water on his eyes, but things got worse when he rubbed his eyes with his soapy hands. I was nervous, telling him not to use his hands.
Out of the blue, he said, “Calm down! Dad.” It amazed me. I realized I was making things worse. I stopped splashing water, washed his hands, and calmly told him to use his hands to clean his eyes while blinking (眨眼). It worked, and he felt better.
I’m not sure where he learned to stay calm, maybe from me or somewhere else. But the bigger lesson is that when we face problems, acting emotionally and quickly might not be best. Staying calm and thinking about the right solution is better.
In today’s tough job market with many people losing their jobs, it’s easy to feel worried. My son’s lesson reminded me that staying calm and taking a moment to relax can help us face challenges with a clear mind, more energy, and better solutions.
4. What happened to the author’s son yesterday?
A. He argued with his dad. B. He fell in the bathroom.
C. He got angry due to the meal. D. He felt something in his eyes.
5. Why did the author worsen the situation at first?
A. He missed an important step. B. He told his son to keep quiet.
C. His hands were covered with soap. D. His son disagreed with his advice.
6. How can we solve problems according to the author?
A. By putting forward many ideas. B. By getting our thoughts straight.
C. By turning to friends for assistance. D. By finding out causes behind them.
7. What does the author’s experience show?
A. Knowledge is power. B. Still waters run deep.
C. Parenting is learning. D. Actions speak louder.
C
When people think about improving their physical fitness, they often neglect (忽视) balance. Good balance is a necessary part of being physically fit and key to living a long life, according to research. It’s important for everyone, no matter your age.
Older adults are most affected by poor balance. Falls are the leading cause of injury and death for those 65 and older, with nearly 30% in this age group reporting at least one fall in 2018, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But younger adults frequently fall down, too.
Forty-eight percent of young adults reported falling at least once during one 16-week study. The falls most commonly happened during sports activities, with women in the study reporting more falls and fall-related injuries than men.
Falls within the previous two years were reported by 18% of young adults (ages 20 to 45) in another study published in the journal BMC Public Health. That figure (数据) compared with 21% of middle-aged adults (46 to 65) reporting falls and 35% of those over 65. While falls among young adults were often connected with sports, falls by the middle-aged group were typically related to health problems and physical changes.
Many factors (因素) can affect your balance outside of age, such as vision changes, brain injuries, overweight and a general lack of physical fitness. Even if you have no risk factors, simply neglecting to work regularly on your balance will result in increased instability (不稳定性).
“Our body is conditioned to lose what we don’t regularly use and practice, and balance is no different,” said Susan Baxter.
8. What role does a good balance play in our lives?
A. It helps us live a healthy and long life.
B. It enables us to build a perfect shape.
C. It protects us from getting seriously sick.
D. It has the power to make us look young.
9. How does the author show the research results?
A. By having a discussion. B. By following the time order.
C. By raising questions. D. By giving a list of figures.
10. In which situation are young adults likely to fall down?
A. When a health problem comes up. B. When working regularly.
C. When a physical change appears. D. When joining in a sport.
11. What can we learn from what Susan Baxter said?
A. We’ll lose our balance if we don’t practise it often.
B. Our body is used to working in its own way.
C. We should manage our body properly.
D. We are naturally born with balance.
D
We all want to give our kids the best possible advice, but when it comes to what path they should explore after education and what career possibilities are out there, where should we start?
“For parents, the most important thing is to keep options open and to understand that equipping them with life skills are important,” says secondary school teacher David Earl.
Your kid will probably have some idea of the terms “growth” and “fixed mindset”. Simply put, the central idea of the growth mindset (思维模式) is that intelligence (智力) and ability can be developed, and children who have this idea will try to seek opportunities to push themselves, understanding that they are likely to achieve what they want if they persevere. This challenges a fixed mindset, the idea that a child’s ability is limited and set in advance.
Help your kid prepare for closed doors, tough interviews, rejection letters by encouraging them to embrace them and understand that none of them is failure. Remind them of things they’ve overcome, suggesting they view every negative experience as a chance to learn and grow, rather than an end point.
Employers lay stress on all kinds of life skills including problem-solving, leadership and creative thinking. So getting your children to think about those skills is helpful. Barclays LifeSkills has listed skills important for individuals in their future careers — communicating through videos and audio, rather than writing, and working with people from different generations and backgrounds.
Good grades and passing examinations may seem like the most important thing to your kid right now, but try to encourage them to also think of longer-term goals. By thinking of a long-term goal, you may be able to find areas they need to improve.
Thinking about the future can be challenging, but it’s important that your kid understands that the next step is just that one small step. It doesn’t have to be anything as huge as what career to pursue or which course to take. This is a team effort: Ask teachers, friends, or turn to experts for tips.
12. What does the growth mindset stress?
A. A child’s ability can be improved. B. Success comes only from good grades.
C. One’s intelligence stays unchanged. D. Children should avoid challenges to succeed.
13. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “embrace” in Paragraph 4?
A. Ignore. B. Measure. C. Perform. D. Accept.
14. Which of the following might the writer agree with?
A. Children should consider long-term goals instead of good grades.
B. It’s parents’ responsibility to choose their children’ future careers.
C. It’s a life skill to get along with people from different backgrounds.
D. Children should be independent of their parents as early as possible.
15. Who is the above passage mainly intended for?
A. Children. B. Parents. C. Employers. D. Teachers.

【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. A

(在一项为期16周的研究中,48%的年轻人报告至少跌倒过一次。)”和第四段中“Falls within the previous two years were reported by 18% of young adults (ages 20 to 45) in another study published in the journal BMC Public Health.

Employers lay stress on all kinds of life skills, including problem-solving, leadership and creative thinking.
A Ignore. B. Measure. C. Perform. D. Accept.
A. Children. B. Parents. C. Employers. D. Teachers.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. B

【13题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词embrace后代词“them”指代上文中的“closed doors, tough interviews, rejection letters (闭门羹、艰难的面试和拒绝信)”,结合下文“understand that none of them is failure”和“suggesting they view every negative experience as a chance to learn and grow, rather than an end point.(建议他们把每一次负面的经历都看作是一个学习和成长的机会,而不是终点)”可知,文中提出要让孩子们正确看待“闭门羹、艰难的面试和拒绝信”之类的负面经历,不要把它们看作是失败,要看作是一次成长的机会,即要接受负面经历。故画线词embrace意思应accept相近,意为“接受”。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Barclays LifeSkills has listed skills important for individuals in their future careers — communicating through videos and audio, rather than writing, and working with people from different generations and backgrounds.(巴克莱生活技能列出了个人未来职业生涯中重要的技能——通过视频和音频进行交流,而不是写作,以及与来自不同年代和背景的人合作)”可知,作者会赞同与来自不同背景的人相处是一种生活技能。故选C项。

She spoke highly of my singing voice and offered to help me, which built up my confidence. So I practiced singing every day. Emily kept my company (陪伴) all the way, giving me guidance and encouragement.
On the day of the show, the auditorium (观众席) was filled with students and teachers, chatting excitedly. As the show began, one after another, the students took the stage, showing off their amazing talents, like dancing, magic tricks, and playing musical instruments. My heart was pounding hard as I watched them.
Finally, it was my turn. I walked onto the stage with my legs trembling and my hands sweating. I was so nervous that I wanted to run off the stage right away.

Emily jumped up from her seat, clapping enthusiastically. She rushed to the stage and gave me a big hug. “You did it! I’m so proud of you,” she whispered in my ear. I knew that without her support, I wouldn’t have had the courage to perform.
