On June 17th, ocean rower Lia Ditton set off on a 20-foot-long rowboat, alone and unsupported, in an attempt to set the fastest ever time for a solo (独自的) crossing from San Francisco to Hawaii, about 2,500 sea miles. Currently, the women’s record stands at 99 days and the men’s record at 52 days. The women’s record goes to the island of Oahu and the men’s record goes to the Big Island. Ditton intends to beat the record for fastest solo row for any human, man or woman.
Ditton is a licensed captain and professional adventurer. The London-born 40-year-old has been training from her base in San Francisco and has spent the final few weeks before setting off wiring her own boat, ensuring all the necessary equipment was on-board, and packing enough food for 75 days while keeping her boat as light as possible. For the past several years, Ditton has been preparing herself and her boat, ready to take on the challenge of rowing 5,500 miles from Japan to San Francisco in spring, bidding to succeed where 19 other attempts have failed. She has completed several long training rows off the west coast of America, and most recently, a successful 728-mile, 24-day training row from Ilwaco, Washington to San Francisco in September 2019.
But this week just after Lia’s start, a tragedy occurred. Fellow distance rower, Angela Madsen lost her life during some routine in-water training. The waters that lie ahead aren’t for the faint of heart. The journey will require Ditton to sail for the Continental Shelf before facing the possibility of ship encounters, extreme weather, and currents, and the travelling through the Shark Café, an area where great white sharks frequent.
“The Continental Shelf is always rough, but I love the challenge. I’ll also row right through Shark Café,” says Ditton. “It’s certainly not over, until it is over. But I’m ready for everything ahead.”
4. What is Lia Ditton’s goal for the crossing?
A. To get the best annual award. B. To be the fastest solo rower.
C. To row for the longest days. D. To reach the farthest island.
5. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How Ditton is trained every day. B. What Ditton claimed in the past.
C. Ditton’s readiness for the crossing. D. Ditton’s past experiences of rowing.
6. What can be known from Paragraph 3?
A. The journey ahead of Ditton is difficult. B. Ditton is worried about her future path.
C. Some other ships will keep her company. D. A sea disaster is there waiting for Ditton.
7. Which of the following can best describe Ditton?
A. Fearless yet knowledgeable. B. Strong-willed and positive.
C. Well-trained and intelligent. D. Self-confident but cautious.
B 5. C 6. A 7. B

根据第一段中“Ditton intends to beat the record for fastest solo row for any human, man or woman.(Ditton想要打破人类(无论男性还是女性)在这一单人划船项目中的最快纪录。)”
根据第二段中“The London-born 40-year-old has been training from her base in San Francisco and has spent the final few weeks before setting off wiring her own boat, ensuring all the necessary equipment was on-board, and packing enough food for 75 days while keeping her boat as light as possible. (这位出生于伦敦的40岁女子一直在旧金山的基地进行训练,并在启程前的最后几周里着手为自己的船只进行线路铺设,确保船上配备了所有必要的设备,并为75天的航行准备了充足的食物,同时尽可能地减轻船只的重量。)”以及下文内容可知,第二段主要讲述了Ditton为了这次航行所做的包括训练在内的所有前期准备。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“But this week just after Lia’s start, a tragedy occurred. Fellow distance rower, Angela Madsen lost her life during some routine in-water training. The waters that lie ahead aren’t for the faint of heart. The journey will require Ditton to sail for the Continental Shelf before facing the possibility of ship encounters, extreme weather, and currents, and the travelling through the Shark Café, an area where great white sharks frequent.(但在Lia Ditton启程后的这一周,发生了一件悲剧事件。 故选A。
纵观全文以及最后一段““The Continental Shelf is always rough, but I love the challenge. I’ll also row right through Shark Café,” says Ditton. “It’s certainly not over, until it is over. But I’m ready for everything ahead.”(“大陆架总是崎岖不平,但我喜欢挑战。我还会划船穿过‘鲨鱼咖啡馆’,”Ditton说:“在它结束之前,它肯定不会结束。但我已经为未来的一切做好了准备。”)”可知,Ditton试图打破记录且准备充分,面对困难时说“我爱挑战”、“我准备好了一切”,由此可知,她非常坚定,且积极乐观。故选B。
C
High school can be challenging for everyone. You are going through an awkward time and you may either fit in right away or feel like a complete outcast. But no matter how well you may fit in (or not), joining a club will be helpful for you now and in the future.
Joining a club is a great way to meet new friends, especially if you are new at school. Being in a club encourages you to talk to people who share the same interests with you. Even if you are the shyest person, you are sure to make friends with at least one person in the club you choose to join. From my own experience, I have made some of my best friends through after-school activities and have had many new opportunities.
Another good thing about joining a club is that taking part in activities looks great on college applications. Being known as outgoing is an important quality (品质); it shows that you are willing to try new things and be determined. It can also help you build skills that you might need during a college interview.
Many teens fight with staying productive. Most students go to school and then come home to spend the rest of the day in front of the TV or on their phones, but clubs help prevent this. Teens are also easily influenced, and if they join the wrong group, they might get into trouble. Clubs are a wonderful place to spend time with good friends who can support you if you need help.
Perhaps the most important reason to join a club is the long-term benefits (益处) it provides. The classroom is not the only place to learn in a school. Meeting and talking to new people, managing your time, and staying organized are skills you will use every day in your life.
8. What might the underlined word “outcast” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. A person who is popular. B. A person who is not smart.
C. A person who is confident. D. A person who is not accepted.
9. What do colleges think highly of according to the text?
A. The number of clubs you have joined.
B. The strong relationships you have built.
C. The bright personality you have developed.
D. The skills you have learned while forming a club.
10. What benefit of joining a club is talked about in paragraph 4?
A. Increasing the knowledge.
B. Learning team working skills.
C. Improving the fitness level.
D. Making good use of the time.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why should you join a club? B. What club should you join?
C. Should you join a second club? D. How should you join a club you like?
D 9. C 10. D 11. A
根据画线词的上文“High school can be challenging for everyone. You are going through an awkward time and you may either fit in right away (高中对每个人来说都是充满挑战的。你正在经历一段尴尬的时期,你可能会马上适应)”和表示选择关系的“or (抑或)”可知,进入高中你可能会立即融入集体,也可能感觉自己完全被排斥,画线词意思应该与fit in right away“马上适应”相对立,表示“一个不被接受的人”。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Another good thing about joining a club is that taking part in activities looks great on college applications. Being known as outgoing is an important quality (品质); it shows that you are willing to try new things and be determined. (参加社团的另一个好处是,参加活动对大学申请很有帮助。外向是一种重要的品质;这表明你愿意尝试新事物,并且很有决心。)”可知,参加社团体现出的外向品质有助于大学申请。由此可知,大学很看重你所培养的开朗性格。故选C项。
10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中“Most students go to school and then come home to spend the rest of the day in front of the TV or on their phones, but clubs help prevent this. Teens are also easily influenced, and if they join the wrong group, they might get into trouble. Clubs are a wonderful place to spend time with good friends who can support you if you need help. (大多数学生去学校,然后回家看电视或玩手机,但俱乐部有助于防止这种情况的发生。青少年也很容易受到影响,如果他们加入了错误的团体,他们可能会陷入麻烦。俱乐部是一个与好朋友共度时光的好地方,如果你需要帮助,他们可以支持你。)”可知,本段主要介绍了加入俱乐部有助于学生好好利用时间。故选D项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“But no matter how well you may fit in (or not), joining a club will be helpful for you now and in the future. (但无论你是否能很好地融入,或不融入,加入一个俱乐部对你现在和将来都有帮助。)”可知,文章讨论了加入俱乐部的各种好处,包括结交新朋友、提升大学申请形象、提高时间管理能力以及获得长期的技能。因此,A项“你为什么要加入俱乐部呢”涵盖了文章介绍的加入俱乐部的各种好处,最适合作为文章标题。故选A项。
D
Travel is one of the most exciting experiences a human being can have. Imagine how Italian traveler Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself in China, seeing a way of life quite different from anything he’d seen before.
And how wonderful must it have been to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia? His brain must have been filled with everything he’d seen and heard, leading to the founding of the Silk Road.
Some people have traveled all over the world, and travel is a way of life to them. But among the travels to a specific destination, the first is more likely to be the best. Imagine a person who has been expecting his first travel to the United States. Of course, he may have seen all the famous sights a thousand times on TV. But none of that would compare to the excitement of looking out of the cabin window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into view.
Although travel is often just for recreation (消遣), it’s also educational. We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are.
We’re learning every day: new words, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not just the classroom. One of the lessons we learn is undoubtedly a moral (道德上的) one. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way. Just like British politician Benjamin Disraeli said, “Travel teaches toleration.”
12. Why does the author mention Marco Polo and Zhang Qian?
A. To explain how the Silk Road was founded.
B. To present travel as an amazing experience.
C. To show how the way people travel has changed.
D. To describe important cultural exchanges in history.
13. What does the author want to convey in Paragraph 3?
A. The best trip is often the first in-person experience.
B. One’s first trip is usually the most challenging.
C. There is always much to learn on one’s first trip.
D. People usually make better preparations for their first trips.
14. What can we know from the last two paragraphs?
A. Traveling should be included in formal education.
B. Traveling improves people’s confidence in their lifestyle.
C. There is more to learn in classroom than from adventures.
D. A foreign journey may raise people’s cultural understanding.
15. According to the passage, what is one of the key moral lessons that travel teaches?
A. The importance of staying at home.
B. The value of exploring new places.
C. The necessity of being tolerant of different cultures.
D. The idea that one’s own culture is better than others.
B 13. A 14. D 15. C
根据第一段“Travel is one of the most exciting experiences a human being can have. Imagine how Italian traveler Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself in China, seeing a way of life quite different from anything he’d seen before. (旅行是一个人所能拥有的最令人兴奋的经历之一。想象一下,当意大利旅行家Marco Polo发现自己来到中国,看到一种与他以前见过的完全不同的生活方式时,他会有什么感受)”和第二段中“And how wonderful must it have been to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia? (当张骞从中亚和西亚旅行回到中国时该是多么美妙啊)”可知,作者先提到旅行是最令人兴奋的经历之一,然后举出Marco Polo和张骞的游历,提到他们完全不一样的美妙感受。由此推知,作者提到两人是为了表明旅行是一种奇妙的体验。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“But among the travels to a specific destination, the first is more likely to be the best. Imagine a person who has been expecting his first travel to the United States. Of course, he may have seen all the famous sights a thousand times on TV. But none of that would compare to (比得上) the excitement of looking out of the cabin window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into view. (但在前往特定目的地的旅行中,第一次旅行更有可能是最好的。想象一下,一个人期待着他的第一次美国之旅。当然,他可能在电视上看过上千次所有的著名景点。但是,当飞机降落时,这些都比不上从机舱窗口望向窗外,看到真实的美国城市和街道时的兴奋)”可知,作者以一个人第一次的美国之旅为例,描述了他看到真实场景时的兴奋。由此推知,最好的旅行往往是第一次亲身的体验。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中“Although travel is often just for recreation, it’s also educational. (虽然旅行通常只是为了娱乐,但它也有教育意义)”和最后一段中“One of the lessons we learn is undoubtedly a moral one. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way. (我们学习的一课无疑是道德上的。随着我们对外国的了解,我们开始明白有许多不同的生活方式,我们的生活方式不一定是最好的)”可推知,作者认为出国旅行可以提高人们对文化的理解。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way. Just like British politician Benjamin Disraeli said, “Travel teaches toleration. (随着我们对外国的了解,我们开始明白有许多不同的生活方式,我们的生活方式不一定是最好的。正如英国政治家Benjamin Disraeli所说:“旅行教会宽容。”)可推知,旅行的一个重要道德教训是学会包容不同的文化和生活方式。故选C项。

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Boxing has been practiced for centuries — it was even one of the sports in the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece. ___16___ Hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life participate in the sport every week. But why? The answer lies in the physical, mental and even social benefits boxing can bring.
Its help for our body is clear. These can, in turn, positively affect other aspects of physical well-being, like heart health and weight management.
___18___ Boxing can also positively affect someone’s mental well-being. Dr. Jessica Pinchbeck, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Fitness at the Open University, says that boxing can reduce some of the symptoms (症状) of anxiety and sadness. Exercising regularly is already widely known to be good for mental health, but boxing can also bring a sense of focus.
And there is a third benefit to putting on boxing gloves. Practicing punches can be done alone, of course. ___19___ It also means working with others to train and stay safe. Dr. Gavin Williams, Senior Lecturer in Education at the Open University, says that this teamwork can create a sense of belonging. ___20___
A. It can improve our body strength.
B. But boxing is not just a one-person activity.
C. So the teamwork can make our society better.
D. So boxing also strengthens a sense of group.

G. It develops self-defense skills, helping build confidence to protect oneself.
E 17. A 18. F 19. B 20. D
根据上文“Boxing has been practiced for centuries — it was even one of the sports in the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece.(拳击这项运动已经存在了数个世纪——它甚至曾是古希腊第一届奥运会的参赛项目之一)”以及后文“Hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life participate in the sport every week. But why? The answer lies in the physical, mental and even social benefits boxing can bring.(每周都有成千上万来自各行各业的人参与这项运动。
根据上文“Its help for our body is clear. Whether it’s practicing with a punching (拳打) bag or facing an opponent in the ring, boxing can be an intense form of exercise and give a full-body workout.(它对我们身体的益处是显而易见的。无论是使用沙袋进行练习,还是在拳击台上与对手对抗,拳击都是一种高强度的锻炼方式,能让我们全身得到锻炼)”以及后文“And it can also increase anaerobic (无氧的) fitness — allowing someone to work out harder, for longer. These can, in turn, positively affect other aspects of physical well-being, like heart health and weight management.(而且它还能提高无氧运动能力——使人们能够更努力地锻炼,持续时间也更长。这些效果反过来又会对身体健康的其他方面产生积极影响,比如心脏健康和体重管理)”可知,空前提到拳击对身体的好处显而易见,空后提到拳击还会提高无氧适应性。由此可推知,设空处应该也是拳击对身体的好处的举例说明,并与空后内容为并列关系。A项与此相关,该项中的“can improve our body strength”与空后的“can also increase anaerobic fitness”构成并列关系,都是拳击对身体的好处的举例说明。
根据后文“Boxing can also positively affect someone’s mental well-being. Dr. Jessica Pinchbeck, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Fitness at the Open University, says that boxing can reduce some of the symptoms (症状) of anxiety and sadness. Exercising regularly is already widely known to be good for mental health, but boxing can also bring a sense of focus.(拳击运动还能对人的心理健康产生积极影响。开放大学体育与健身专业的高级讲师杰西卡·平奇贝克博士表示,拳击能够缓解一些焦虑和抑郁的症状。定期锻炼已众所周知对心理健康有益,而拳击还能让人集中注意力)”可知,空后提到拳击对心理健康的益处,设空处要点明本段拳击对心理健康有益处的主旨。F项与此相关,该项中的“But”将拳击对身体的益处过渡到下文对心理健康的益处,其中的“aren’t just good for the body”与空后的“positively affect someone’s mental well-being”衔接紧密,形成递进关系,共同点明本段主旨。
根据上文“And there is a third benefit to putting on boxing gloves. Practicing punches can be done alone, of course.(而且戴上拳击手套还有第三个好处。当然,练习出拳动作是完全可以独自进行的)”以及后文“It also means working with others to train and stay safe. Dr. Gavin Williams, Senior Lecturer in Education at the Open University, says that this teamwork can create a sense of belonging.(这还意味着要与他人合作,共同进行训练并确保自身安全。
根据上文“It also means working with others to train and stay safe.

A. The journey ahead of Ditton is difficult. B. Ditton is worried about her future path.
C. Some other ships will keep her company. D. A sea disaster is there waiting for Ditton.
7. Which of the following can best describe Ditton?
A. Fearless yet knowledgeable. B. Strong-willed and positive.
C. Well-trained and intelligent. D. Self-confident but cautious.
D People usually make better preparations for their first trips.
