Passwords are private. If someone has your passwords, they can use your account. You can be best friends without sharing passwords! Explain this to your friend. I’m sure she’ll understand. If you’re still worried, you should talk to your parents or another adult. Good luck.

Frightened, I was walking into my first school in America. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been here for three years, hoping America would help my future. My father decided that I would have a better education here, so I enrolled (登记) in the local high school in my new town.
I was afraid of how I would do. On the first day, I went to my second class after I had missed my first. With anxiety, I reached for the door, opening it slowly. Without paying attention to my classmates, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered, “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little.
He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India we had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector (投影仪). In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.
It was noon. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. I went to my next class and the bell rang as I entered. I went through the regular (惯常的) process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said, “It’s still fourth period.”
“But the bell just rang,” I said.
Changing from a gentle tone to a harsh (刺耳的) one, she said, “That is the lunch bell, young man.”
I apologized. Without another word I headed for the cafeteria I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India. Every confusion seemed like a barrier I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either. I saw my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn’t so bad.

B. Because his father thought little of Indian schools.
C. Because his family wanted him to have a bright future.
D. Because he had been anxious to leave his homeland.
5. What can we learn about the author’s first day of school?
A. He missed his lunch because he was lost.
B. He had no choice but to sit in a fixed seat.
C. His classmates and teachers were all unfriendly.
D. He felt differences between the two education systems.
6. What does the underlined word “barrier” probably mean?
A. Period. B. Difficulty. C. Task. D. Door.
7. What was the author’s feeling of his first day in high school?
A. Happy. B. Sad. C. Helpless. D. Doubtful.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time (屏幕设备使用时间) after school, including how much time they spent swiping their mobile phone, watching TV, Netflix, or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programs. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级) .
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
8. What were the students asked to do after they reported time spent on after-school activities?
A. Talk about their lifestyles. B. Introduce their after-school activities.
C. Report their mental states on a scale. D. Answer questions about screen time use.
9. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. Higher levels of satisfaction fills their hearts.
B. They take more active part in after-school activities.
C. They have lower levels of anxiety.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
10. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
11. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
B. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
D
A new observation in Sumatra caught seasoned scientists by surprise. An orangutan (红毛猩猩) known as Rakus treated a fresh wound with a medicinal plant, making this the first time an animal has been seen applying a biologically active substance (物质) for its health benefits. This leaves scientists wondering: Did humans invent medicine, or does it pre-date our species?
These animals are known to be among the most intelligent non-human primates (灵长类). They’ve been observed using tools, communicating vocally, and engaging in even more complex behaviors like calculated reciprocity, which involves aiding another orangutan with the expectation of being paid back. They can even use Skype with some help from humans.
Roughly 60,000-70,000 of these creatures remain in the wild, about 15,000 of which live on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. That’s where the Suaq Project, part of the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behavior, observes orangutans in their natural habitat.
The researchers noted in June that Rakus had a small wound on his face following a fight with another mature male orangutan. Several days later, Rakus did something no one had ever seen a primate do before. He began carefully picking the leaves from a climbing vine (藤蔓) known as akar kuning. Local human populations have long used these leaves for pain relief and to treat conditions like malaria. Orangutans don’t usually eat these plants; indeed, Rakus didn’t eat them. He chewed (嚼碎) them and then applied the resulting paste to his facial wound.
This is the first time researchers have seen such behavior in 21 years at the Sumatran research station. Wild orangutans are rarely injured so this may be a rare but widespread behavior. Or perhaps Rakus is the only one that knows this trick. The researchers assumed that early humans may have learned about certain treatment by observing animals engaging in similar behaviors. And here we are, thousands of generations later, still watching and wondering just how smart they are. Increasingly, it looks like orangutans are one cave painting away from civilization.
12. Why does the author mention Skype in paragraph 2?
A. To support an idea. B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To explain a problem. D. To present a suggestion.
13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How Rakus got injured. B. How Rakus treated his wound.
C. What Rakus ate in the wild. D. What Rakus explored in the forest.
14. What can be inferred about the new observation?
A. It proves the medical value of a plant leaf.
B. It shows a widespread behavior among orangutans.
C. It answers one of scientists’ questions about medicine.
D. It adds evidence to show the intelligence of orangutans.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Non-human Primates Seen Using Tools in the Wild
B. Orangutans Proved to Be the Most Intelligent Primate
C. A Project Observes Orangutans in Their Natural Habitat
D. An Orangutan Observed Applying Medicinal Plant to a Wound

Hi Alex,
My best friend wants me to share my passwords with her. Shall I give them to her?
From Star44
Hi Star44!
Passwords are private. If someone has your passwords, they can use your account. You can be best friends without sharing passwords! Explain this to your friend. I’m sure she’ll understand. If you’re still worried, you should talk to your parents or another adult. Good luck.
Alex

4. Why did the author enroll in an American high school?
A. Because his mother had worked in it for 3 years.
A. Happy. B. Sad. C. Helpless. D. Doubtful.
C 5. D 6. B 7. A

根据第一段“I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been here for three years, hoping America would help my future.(我从印度远道而来,只为能与已经在此生活了三年的父母团聚,我满怀期望,希望美国能为我的未来带来改变)”可知,父母希望作者在美国受到好教育从而有个更好的未来。
根据第三段“Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India we had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector (投影仪). In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.(然后他让我自己决定坐哪个位置。其实我根本不想去挑选座位。在印度,座位都是固定的,所以我从来都不用为此担心。在那堂课剩下的时间里,我都在用投影仪展示的图像内容做笔记。在印度的学校里,我们不使用这种技术,老师讲课时我们就得边听边做笔记)”可知,美国高中和印度高中有很大差异。故选D。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Every confusion seemed like a (每一个困惑似乎都是……)”以及后文“I had to get through to reach my goal (我达到目标必须克服……)”

C They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
C 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据第二段“Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programs. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级). (然后,学生们报告他们参加体育或艺术项目等课外活动的天数。之后,研究人员让学生描述他们的心理状态。例如,当被问及“我大多数日子开始时都认为自己会有美好的一天”这样的陈述时,他们可以在一个等级量表上选择自己同意的程度)”可知,学生在报告完参加课外活动的时间后,被要求在等级量表上报告自己的心理状态。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.(他们预计女孩在心理健康的消极指标上得分会更高,因为早期的研究发现,与男孩相比,女孩往往有更高程度的焦虑)”可知,研究人员发现女孩本身心理健康消极指标得分更高、焦虑程度更高,过多屏幕时间会进一步影响心理健康,对她们危害更大。
根据第四段“What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.(研究人员说,值得注意的是,即使在参加课外活动的学生中,46%的人仍然超过了建议的两小时屏幕使用时间。与此同时,67%没有参加课外活动的学生每天的屏幕使用时间也超过了两小时。总之,这表明青少年普遍存在屏幕使用时间过长的情况)”可知,作者通过列举“参加课外活动的学生中46%屏幕时间超标”和“未参加课外活动的学生中67%屏幕时间超标”这两个数据,是为了说明青少年中屏幕使用时间过长的现象很普遍。故选B项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段““The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.” (该研究称:“研究结果表明,课外活动对青少年的快乐成长很有价值。虽然过去的研究已经证明了课外活动对社交和学业发展的重要性,但目前的研究表明,课外活动对良好的心理健康结果也很重要”)”可知,这项新研究认为课外活动重要,是因为它有助于改善青少年的心理健康。故选A项。

They’ve been observed using tools communicating vocally, and engaging in even more complex behaviors like calculated reciprocity, which involves aiding another orangutan with the expectation of being paid back.
Wild orangutans are rarely injured, so this may be a rare but widespread behavior.
A 13. B 14. D 15. D

With travel on the rise, more families are planning to take their home life on the road, whether it’s for a weekend or a longer trip. Traveling with kids can be stressful — with all those suitcases and cries of “Are we there yet?” ___16___
Involving (使参与) young children in planning a trip might sound silly, but it’s far more valuable than it seems. “You shouldn’t expect a 4-year-old to spend eight hours in museums,” says Jason, a family travel researcher. “It’s really smart for parents to think like a kid. ___17___” That attitude helps parents avoid terrible situations that may ruin the day.
___18___ If a little one is into dinosaurs, perhaps you’ll want to check out a city’s Natural History Museum. If they love animals, maybe there’s a way to include a visit to a farm or an aquarium (水族馆).
One of Jason’s favourite ways to get younger kids excited about a trip is reading. “Books are perfect for little armchair travellers,” he says. “___19___” Before a recent trip to Puerto Rico, Jason read his kids a book about a frog native to the island. Afterwards, his daughters got really excited to hear this little frog singing at night.
People often think the trip is going to be one Instagram worthy moment after another, but that never happens. ___20___ When kids are involved, they can become invested in getting through those problems. They also learn to work things out together as a family.
A. Most children really enjoy challenges.

根据空前“Traveling with kids can be stressful — with all those suitcases and cries of “Are we there yet?”(带着孩子旅行可能会很有压力——带着所有的行李箱和“我们到了吗?”)”可知,带着孩子旅行可能会有压力,而空后“Involving (使参与) young children in planning a trip might sound silly, but it’s far more valuable than it seems. (让年幼的孩子参与计划旅行可能听起来很傻,但它比看起来要有价值得多。)”可知,带孩子旅行是有价值的,空前和空后的内容之间为转折关系,因此空格处应该出现带转折的词,C选项“However, it can also be a highly rewarding activity.(然而,它也可以是一个非常有益的活动。)”中的However表转折,说明带孩子去旅行是值得的,承上启下,符合语境。故选C。
【17题详解】
根据空后“That attitude helps parents avoid terrible situations that may ruin the day. (这种态度可以帮助父母避免可能会毁了一天的糟糕情况。)”可知,空格处应该是父母的一种态度,G选项“You can regard the trip as a 30-minute max type opportunity for the child. (你可以把这次旅行视为孩子最多30分钟的体验机会。)”是父母的一种态度,因此承接上文,且与空后的that attitude指代的内容一致,符合语境。故选G。
【18题详解】
空格处是本段的主旨句,根据空后的“If a little one is into dinosaurs, perhaps you’ll want to check out a city’s Natural History Museum. (如果孩子喜欢恐龙,也许你会想去城市的自然历史博物馆看看。如果他们喜欢动物,也许有一个方法包括参观农场或水族馆。)”可知,本段主要讲的是在计划带孩子去旅行时,应该要考虑孩子的喜好,F选项“Parents can also play into their kids’ interests when planning a trip. (在计划旅行时,父母也可以考虑孩子的兴趣。)”说明了父母在计划旅行时应该考虑孩子的兴趣,概括了本段主要内容,可作为主旨句。故选F。
【19题详解】
根据空前“One of Jason’s favourite ways to get younger kids excited about a trip is reading. “Books are perfect for little armchair travellers,” he says. Afterwards, his daughters got really excited to hear this little frog singing at night. (在最近一次去波多黎各旅行之前,Jason给他的孩子们读了一本关于岛上本地青蛙的书。后来,他的女儿们听到这只小青蛙在晚上唱歌真的很兴奋。)”说明Jason通过书让孩子对旅行感到兴奋,空格处也应该和让孩子兴奋有关,E选项“They get the kids curious about the trip before leaving home. (他们在离开家之前让孩子们对这次旅行感到好奇。)”说明了他们在离开家去旅行前让孩子们对旅行感到好奇,因此E选项承上启下,符合语境。故选E。
