Rueben Mayes was born and raised in a farming community in Saskatchewan, Canada, where football was not an important part of life. However, Mayes was naturally drawn to the sport, and his talent was obvious from an early age. His passion (激情) for football only grew stronger as he played for the High School under the guidance of coach Don Hodgins, who recognized Mayes’ potential and took a personal interest in his development.
Hodgins’ support for Mayes went far beyond the typical role of a high school coach. He saw something special in Mayes and wanted to ensure that he had every opportunity to succeed in the sport. Hodgins helped Mayes get a place in a football camp in the U.S., which proved to be a turning point for the young sportsman. Mayes’ time in the camp gave him the confidence and skills he needed to become a successful football player.
Mayes went on to attend Washington State University, where he played football and quickly caught the attention of National Football League (NFL) interviewers. In 1986, he was selected by the New Orleans Saints. Although he faced several challenges early in his work, Mayes quickly became a force to be treated seriously on the field. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons, becoming one of the most promising young players in the league.
In 1991, Mayes went to the Seattle Seahawks, where he played for two more seasons before stopping work in 1993. Although he only played for a few years, Mayes left a lasting legacy (遗产) in the NFL. He was a strong-willed sportsman, and his success on the field serves as an encouragement for young sportsmen everywhere, showing that hard work and a strong belief in oneself can get over even the biggest difficulty.
4. How did Don Hodgins mainly help Mayes?
A. By training him to be a professional. B. By helping him join a sports school.
C. By making him interested in football. D. By finding his talent and guiding him.
5. What was the life-changing experience for Mayes?
A. Playing for his high school team. B. Attending a football camp in the U. S.
C. Studying at Washington State University. D. Joining the New Orleans Saints.
6. Which of the following best describes Mayes’ career in the NFL?
A. Smooth and ordinary. B. Remarkable but short.
C. Challenging but rewarding. D. Disappointing and discouraging.
7. What message does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. It’s honorable to be admitted to NFL. B. It’s admirable to serve as role models.
C. It’s promising to be a professional. D. It’s important to have passion and determination.

The simple act of blowing out birthday candles carries a rich history dating back thousands of years. The tradition dates back to ancient Greece, where people honored Artemis, goddess of the moon, with round honey cakes called “nouton-gonosupahon”. Historians like Marie Nicola suggest candlelight likely represented moonlight during lunar celebrations. “Fire represented the presence of gods across Indo-European cultures,” notes Nicola. The Romans later adopted these customs, adding candlelit cakes into birthday celebrations as their empire expanded.
By the Middle Ages, Germans developed their own candle tradition through Kinderfest, a children’s festival. People believed children were vulnerable (易受伤害的) to bad spirits on their birthdays. Candles burned all day, their smoke carrying protective prayers heavenward. German writer Goethe’s 1799 account of his 52nd birthday cake with 50 candles marks one of the earliest documented uses matching modern practice.
The 19th century saw the tradition develop quickly. Swiss records from 1881 describe cakes with candles representing each year of life-the first clear documentation of today’s celebration. Germans then brought the custom to America, where it gained new meaning: blowing out all candles in one breath ensured wishes come true.
Mass production and media promoted the tradition worldwide. By the 1920s numbered candle sets began to be sold, while Disney’s 1931 Mickey Mouse cartoon “The Birthday Party” cemented the image in popular culture. After World War II, the fixed practice spread globally, from Japan adopting it in the 1950s to Hallmark cards featuring candle imagery.
What began as spiritual protection became a universal celebration of life-proving even ancient celebrations can develop into joyful traditions. As Nicola reflects, “That single breath blowing out candles still carries shadows of ancient prayers, now transformed into wishes for the future.”
8. What can be known about blowing out birthday candles in paragraph 1?
A. It was related to belief. B. It stands for long life.
C. It adds light to birthday. D. It came from Rome.
9. How is this text developed?
A. By listing examples. B. By following time order.
C. By listing events. D. By telling stories.
10. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “cemented” in paragraph 4?
A. Copied. B. Suggested. C. Strengthened. D. Won.

Smart T.rex is for the birds, scientists claim. We know that Tyrannosaurus rex was strong, with strong jaws (下巴).We know it was scary, with big teeth. But was the king of the dinosaurs also clever?
This is the question that has divided scientists, ever since a paper was published last year that argued the dinosaur might have had intelligence comparable to that of a monkey. Now, researchers from an international team have re-analyzed that information, and their findings are disappointing for those who rather liked the idea that behind its sharp teeth lay a sharp mind.
The disagreement comes down to how many neurons (神经元) a T.rex had. That was the argument made last year by neuroscientists from Vanderbilt University in the U.S. By looking at the skull (颅骨) space of dinosaurs including T.rex, and mapping that on to those of living relatives, they decided it had a brain similar to a modern monkey’s.
While Kai Caspar, a zoologist at Heinrich Heine University, does not deny the scariness of the T.rex, his new study is, he believes, a corrective to the idea that scariness came with notable cleverness. His team made sure of two areas of disagreement with the U.S. study.
The first is about how much of the skull is brain. Birds pack their skulls with neurons, but reptiles (爬行动物) such as crocodiles do not. Most of their skulls is not brain, Caspar says its brain looked a lot more crocodile-like, than bird-like. The second disagreement is about the thickness of brain in the part that does have neurons. Here there was more room for disagreement as no soft body parts remained. If it has a brain like a bird’s, it might have a billion neurons. If it was like a modern reptile, it would be a third of that. He thinks it is the latter.
This did not mean it was stupid, he said, as reptiles could perform difficult behaviors. “We do not look down upon it by saying it’s a reptile grade intelligence. Certainly not. It was a difficult animal, for sure.” Caspar said.
12. What was discovered about the T.rex in the rethink of the old information?
A. It was as clever as a monkey. B. It was the king of dinosaurs.
C. It was not as clever as expected. D. It had sharp teeth and sharp mind.
13. What is the key to deciding whether T.rex is intelligent?
A. The number of neurons. B. The space of its skull.
C. Its scariness. D. Its skull size.
14. What does paragraph 5 tell us about the U.S. study and the new study?
A. Their achievements. B. Their disagreements.
C. Their similarities. D. Their research methods.
15. What does Caspar think of T.rex?
A. It’s clever. B. It’s heavy-headed. C. It’s simple. D. It’s respectable.

What Is the Concept of Aging?
For much of human history, a person’s ability to complete tasks or offer help to their family and community shaped the idea of old age.
____16____ While the official age to stop working will hit 67 beginning in 2026, the normal American stops working at 62, which is around the time most governments consider a person old.
The range (范围) of 60 to 65 has remained relatively unchangeable over time, even as life expectancy extended and humans experienced big social and economic changes.
____17____ Most older people will spend an important part of their lives influenced by these age-related diseases and other health problems. By some surveys, nearly 95 percent of U.S. adults over 60 have at least one disease, while nearly 80 percent have two or more.
Yet age may not be a good indicator (指标) for deciding old age. ____18____ And it’s true that no one wants to be old. Ageism leads to social loneliness, poor health, and even earlier death. Becca Levy, a professor of age and psychology (心理学) at Yale University, has spent much of her work studying the downstream effects of age beliefs. ____19____
Research shows that negative beliefs about aging can harm physical and mental health, while positive beliefs improve health. One study estimates that ageism costs the U.S. $ 63 billion every year. ____20____ Western cultures value youth, while Eastern cultures, like China and Korea, often connect aging with wisdom and view it as a good character.
A. Getting older is often described as a problem to fix.
B. Rather, every person might enter old age at different times.
C. Overall, aging is the strongest risk for cancer or Alzheimer’s.
D. She explains those effects in her book, Breaking the Age Code.
E. Besides, cultural differences influence attitudes toward aging.
F. She explains in her book aging is not something that happens slowly.
G. Traditionally, stopping work marked the change in people’s focus from ability to age.

Second Chance Under the Snow
The world turned upside down in a second. One moment, Ian Steger was skiing through fresh snow at Mount Baker Ski Area, the next he was throwing himself headfirst into a tree well (井), covered under six feet of snow. The snow weight made every breath painful. Darkness surrounded him completely.
As an experienced 40-year-old snowboarder, Ian knew the dangers. Just three months earlier, his friend Bill had died the same way. Now, stuck and frightened, Ian’s mind raced with regrets — especially about his wife-to-be Emilia and the unsigned will still waiting on their kitchen table.
With one free arm, Ian pushed away the snow around his face, creating a small air pocket. He pulled his jacket over his mouth to protect it, each breath becoming shorter. His radio rang — his friends were searching downhill, unaware of his situation. Time was running out.
As minutes passed, Ian accepted his fate. He thought of Emilia and how they’d argued just that morning about his risky hobby. Then a gentle pull on his snowboard. Was it real?
Nearby, carpenter Francis Zuber saw something unusual — a red snowboard tip (末端) moving under the snow. Without thinking twice, he threw his skis and fought through the deep powder. Every step was tiring as he swam through the snow.
After what felt like hours (but was only minutes), Francis reached the tree well and began digging wildly with his hands. His fingers burned with cold, but he didn’t stop until he uncovered Ian’s pale face. “Can you hear me?” Francis shouted. A weak “Yes” was the only reply.
Using his avalanche shovel (雪崩铲) Francis finally freed Ian completely. As Ian struggled to breathe air, coughing blood onto the clean snow, the two strangers shared a wordless hug. “You saved a life today,” Ian whispered.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Ian Steger was immediately sent to a nearby hospital.

By the 1920s, numbered candle sets began to be sold, while Disney’s 1931 Mickey Mouse cartoon “The Birthday Party” cemented the image in popular culture.

根据第一段中的“Historians like Marie Nicola suggest candlelight likely represented moonlight during lunar celebrations. ‘Fire represented the presence of gods across Indo-European cultures,’ notes Nicola. The Romans later adopted these customs, adding candlelit cakes into birthday celebrations as their empire expanded. (玛丽・尼科拉等历史学家认为,在月亮祭祀活动中,烛光可能代表着月光。尼科拉指出:“在印欧文化中,火象征着神灵的存在。”随着罗马帝国的扩张,罗马人后来采纳了这些习俗,将有点燃蜡烛的蛋糕纳入生日庆祝活动中。)” 可知,吹生日蜡烛的传统与“烛光代表月光”“火象征神灵” 等信仰相关,故选A。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。文中明确出现了多个时间线索:“ancient Greece (古希腊)”“the Romans (罗马时期)”“the Middle Ages (中世纪)”“The 19th century (19世纪)”“By the 1920s (到20世纪20年代)”“1931”“After World War II (二战后)”“the 1950s (20世纪50年代)”。
根据第四段中的“Mass production and media promoted the tradition worldwide. By the 1920s, numbered candle sets began to be sold, while Disney’s 1931 Mickey Mouse cartoon “The Birthday Party”cemented the image in popular culture.

根据第二段中的“Now, researchers from an international team have re-analyzed that information, and their findings are disappointing for those who rather liked the idea that behind its sharp teeth lay a sharp mind. (现在,一个国际研究团队重新分析了这些信息,他们的发现让那些宁愿相信霸王龙锋利牙齿背后藏着敏锐头脑的人感到失望。)” 以及后文新研究指出霸王龙大脑更接近爬行动物而非鸟类(智力较低)可知,重新分析旧信息后发现,霸王龙并不像预期的那么聪明,故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The disagreement comes down to how many neurons (神经元) a T.rex had. That was the argument made last year by neuroscientists from Vanderbilt University in the U.S. (分歧的核心在于霸王龙有多少个神经元。这是去年美国范德堡大学的神经科学家提出的观点。)” 可知,判断霸王龙是否聪明的关键在于其神经元的数量,故选A。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段中的“The first is about how much of the skull is brain. Birds pack their skulls with neurons, but reptiles (爬行动物) such as crocodiles do not. (第一个分歧在于颅骨中有多少空间是用于容纳大脑的。鸟类的颅骨中布满了神经元,但鳄鱼等爬行动物则并非如此。)”以及“The second disagreement is about the thickness of brain in the part that does have neurons. Here there was more room for disagreement as no soft body parts remained. If it has a brain like a bird’s, it might have a billion neurons. (第二个分歧涉及大脑中存在神经元的那部分区域的厚度。由于(恐龙的)软组织并未留存下来,这一点存在较大的争议空间。如果霸王龙的大脑结构与鸟类相似,它可能拥有10亿个神经元。)” 可知,第五段主要阐述了美国研究与新研究之间的两处分歧,故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“This did not mean it was stupid, he said, as reptiles could perform difficult behaviors. ‘We do not look down upon it by saying it’s a reptile grade intelligence. Certainly not. It was a difficult animal, for sure.’ Caspar said. (他说,这并不意味着霸王龙很笨,因为爬行动物也能完成复杂的行为。卡斯帕表示:‘我们不会因为说它拥有爬行动物水平的智力就看不起它。当然不会。毫无疑问,它是一种不好对付的动物。’)” 可知,卡斯帕认为霸王龙并非愚笨,且承认它是“不好对付的动物”,由此可推断他认为霸王龙是值得尊敬的。故选D。

此处修饰形容词“untouched(未受影响的)”,需用副词形式,“relative(相对的)”的副词形式是“relatively(相对地)”,表示程度。
“on ____5____ the fire show was performed”是定语从句,先行词是“the stage(舞台)”,指物,在从句中作地点状语,且位于介词“on”后,所以用关系代词“which”引导该定语从句,“on which”相当于“where”,表示“在舞台上”。故填which。
故填the。
故填were forgotten。
此处修饰名词“skills(技能)”,要用形容词形式,“profession(职业;专业)”的形容词是“professional(专业的)”。
“refuse to do sth.” 故填to learn。
“be listed as...” 故填as。

Using his avalanche shovel (雪崩铲), Francis finally freed Ian completely. As Ian struggled to breathe air, coughing blood onto the clean snow, the two strangers shared a wordless hug. “You saved a life today,” Ian whispered.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Ian Steger was immediately sent to a nearby hospital.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Francis and Ian formed an unlikely friendship.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ian Steger was immediately sent to a nearby hospital. Doctors discovered his lungs had been severely damaged from the extreme pressure and lack of oxygen. While recovering, Ian couldn’t stop thinking about how close he’d come to death. The unsigned will was finally completed. When Emilia arrived, tears streaming down her face, Ian made a silent promise to never take their time together for granted again. The doctors warned his recovery would take weeks, but Ian knew the emotional healing would take much longer.
Francis and Ian formed an unlikely friendship. They might never have met under normal circumstances. Yet their bond, formed in that life-or-death moment, grew stronger with each passing season. They returned to Mount Baker together the following winter — this time staying safely within boundaries and always checking each other’s equipment. What began as a rescue mission transformed into something far more meaningful — a reminder that sometimes our deepest connections come from our most unexpected encounters.
