How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this. Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.
“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way,” said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulty learning foreign languages. On his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, “A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and open the door for future research in this area.” Many language teachers know the value (价值) of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington D.C., depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. Not only does it work, but it is fun for kids.” Our brain likes music, especially for remembering. So, if you’re still struggling in learning a language, why not try singing it out?

D. teaches Chinese in an American school
47. The passage mainly tells us that ________.
A. your brain remembers a language better if you sing it
B. you will never learn a language well unless you can sing
C. many language teachers know the value of famous music

One day, I was teaching my daughter how to paint. I saw that a lot of her energy went into dipping her brush into the paint, and then into a bowl of water. But then most of the paint that was on the brush would just disappear in the water. As an impatient mother, I was thinking, “I am trying to teach you how to paint on paper and what are you doing? This is not what you are supposed to do. You have to do this way.”
But she is three years old so she is probably not going to bother doing it the right way. She had so much fun dipping the brush in the paint and in the water bowl. Pretty much within an hour, most of the paint was all over the room and I just sat there with my hands on my head thinking, “Oh my god, this girl is hopeless.” Soon after, however, she shouted, “Mama, when I mix pink and blue, it turns purple!”
I was surprised. While I was thinking that she was wasting perfectly good paint and paper, she actually learned something. What would have been a very theoretical experiment turned into a very practical experiment.
I am a designer and work with software like Photoshop and Illustrator. When my daughter sees me work on the computer, she is always very curious and she wants to work with me on the same thing that I do. She starts to mess with buttons, and in that process, sometimes lands up teaching me things! There will be many times when she will find something new. I will ask her how, and she will tell me, “I pressed this, and I pressed this, and then this happened.”
One of the things I realized from this is that everyone has a different way of learning things. When I was growing up, I related to literature very well, so everything that was turned into a story became my way of learning and understanding different ideas. Some kids understand through art, some understand through math and games, and it’s the job of a parent or a teacher to watch and discover how children learn and try their best to make these experiences educational.
48. What did the writer think about her daughter’s painting activity at first?
A. Her daughter was doing it the right way.
B. She was impatient with her daughter for not doing it the right way.
C. Her daughter’s activity was a total waste of time.
D. She did not mind what her daughter was doing.
49. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?
A. Her daughter is using the software the way the writer wants her to.
B. Her daughter is doing something that is not helpful.
C. Her daughter is playing with the software and discovering new things.
D. Her daughter is playing with the buttons for no reason.
50. What can parents and teachers do to help children learn?
A. Discover how children learn, and make it educational.
B. Let children learn in any way they want.
C. Teach children through stories only.
D. Tell children how they should learn.
51. How did the writer learn when she was growing up?
A. Through art and math.
B. Through experiments and practical activities.
C. Through playing computer games.
D. Through literature and storytelling.
52. What lesson can be learned from the writer’s experience with her daughter?
A. Parents should tell their children how to learn.
B. Everyone has a different way of learning things.
C. Children should not join in practical experiments.
D. Art and literature are the only useful ways to learn.
B)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You’ve been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you’re a reader, you have another way to learn words. What should you do when you come to a word and you think you don’t know what it means? ____53____
Say it
First, sound it out. Then say it to yourself. ____54____ Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don’t know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read—you have the word!
Use context
If this doesn’t work, take the next step: look at the context—the other words and sentences around it. Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway. ____55____ Rain and in the doorway might give you helpful information.
____56____
If the context doesn’t help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know? These can help you understand what it means. If you don’t know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a mine is a place underground where people get coal and other valuable things. A lot of times, er at the end of a word means “a person who does something”. So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
Look it up
If the three steps above don’t work, you can look it up. ____57____—either a book or online. Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don’t know.
A. Look at the words
B. Use word parts
C. You can find the word in a dictionary.
D. It might sound like a word you know.
E. Following some easy steps can help you.
F. We can learn from our mistakes.
G. If the word shelter doesn’t look familiar, look at the words around it.

1. —Sandy wanted to go home. But why didn’t she tell her parents?
—Because she wanted to give them a ________.
A. gift B. call C. surprise D. note
【答案】C
【解析】
【详解】句意:——Sandy计划回家。但她为什么不告诉她的父母呢?——因为她想要给他们一个惊喜。
考查名词词义辨析。gift“礼物”;call“打电话”;surprise“惊喜”;note“笔记”。根据“why didn’t she tell her parents”可知Sandy没有告诉她的父母是因为想要给他们一个惊喜。故选C。
2. —________ great progress John has made in his subjects!
—Yes.
A. How a B. What a C. What D. How
【答案】C
【解析】
【详解】句意:——约翰在他的学科上取得了多么大的进步啊!——是的。
考查感叹句。中心词是“progress进步”,属于不可数名词,句子符合感叹句结构“What+形容词+不可数名词+主谓!”。故选C。
3. My mother is very ________ with us when my sister and I ask her questions. We all love her.
A. wisely B. secret C. active D. patient
【答案】D
【解析】
【详解】句意:当我和妹妹问我妈妈问题时,她对我们很有耐心。我们都爱她。
考查词义辨析。wisely明智地,副词;secret秘密的,形容词;active积极的,形容词;patient有耐心的,形容词。根据空前“is very”可知,此处应该用形容词,且根据“We all love her.”可推知,妈妈对我们很有耐心,所以应该用patient。故选D。
4. I don’t know ________ it will be rainy on weekends. ________ it rains, I’ll stay at home.
A. unless; If B. if; If C. if; Whether D. whether; Until
【答案】B
【解析】

How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this.

【答案】 例文:
The Spring Festival in My Eyes
Chinese people have been celebrating the Spring Festival for centuries. In the old days, we used to set off fireworks and watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV. But now, things are different. We don’t set off fireworks much anymore because we want to protect the environment. Instead, we play games on our phones and chat with our family and friends online.
The food we eat during the Spring Festival has also changed. We still eat dumplings and fish, which are symbols of good luck, but we also try different kinds of food from all over the world.
I think these changes show how our lives are getting better and more colorful. Even though some old ways are gone, I like the new ways because they make the Spring Festival more fun and interesting. It’s a time to remember our traditions and also to enjoy the new things that come with the modern world.
