An interesting finding has been discovered from psychological research: Introverts may manage the challenges of aging better. While extroverts have long been celebrated for their social butterfly abilities, it turns out that the introvert’s natural inclinations (倾向) may serve as a built-in buffer against some of aging’s most common challenges. The very qualities of introverts—preference for quieter environments, comfort with being alone, and deeper but fewer social connections—appear to match well with the natural development of the social world as they grow older.
The key lies in what is known as “positive disengagement”. Laura Carstensen. the founding director of Stanford’s Center of Longevity, suggests that as people grow older, they naturally become more selective (有选择的) about their social interactions. preferring quality over quantity (数量). The change that extroverts may feel uncomfortable with often comes more naturally to introverts.
Another interesting work by Helene Fung at the Chinese University of Hong Kong found that introverts experience less worry about the social changes accompanying aging. While extroverts may have trouble with the decreased energy for socializing. introverts often find that such changes match with pre-existing (已存在的) preferences.
Robert McCrae’s research at the National Institute on Aging supports this “introvert advantage”. His team’s findings show that introverts may deal with the big questions of aging better because they naturally think deeply about life. While extroverts might look for outside activities that can pull their attention away from aging-related worries, introverts’ natural inclinations to turn inward often result in better adjustment (调整) and acceptance of life’s changes.
The most convincing research comes from Klaus Rothermund, who studies how people manage emotions as they age. His work shows that introverts often develop better coping skills earlier in life. Such skills as the ability to think deeply about themselves and the ability to form one-on-one connections become increasingly valuable as they grow older. It’s as if introverts have been unknowingly practicing for their elder years all along.
The meanings of the findings go beyond just research interest. Understanding how different personality types deal with change becomes increasingly important as people age.
For extroverts reading this, don’t feel disappointed—awareness is half the job done, and many coping skills that come naturally to introverts can be learned and trained. And for introverts? You might want to add this to your list of quiet victories. Your personality may have prepared you for a more beautiful journey into your later years.
Sometimes, it seems that the tortoise doesn’t just win the race. It may also enjoy the journey more.

Some research results have shown that health is connected to personality (性格). But until now, this relationship hasn’t changed how health care is given. Some health workers aren’t sure if there is a direct connection between them. Some think it’s their duty to treat all patients in the same way. Others believe that giving health care according to patients’ personalities doesn’t make a big difference to the patients, so it’s not worth trying.
However, some researchers think that treating patients differently can have a good effect on their health. Recently, research on personality has mainly focused on five types of personalities: being outgoing, being kind, being open-minded, being responsible and being easily nervous. They have already got some findings. For example, responsible people are less likely to smoke or drink a lot.
So, if health workers offer service according to patients’ personalities, it could be easier for patients to follow the advice or accept treatment. Let’s take people who like looking for excitement as an example. They are the out-going one in the five types and like to take part in risky activities and get energy in social situations. So, to encourage these people to follow health advice, we should design such activities to improve their health.
When health workers send information to some patients, they should also think about the patients’ personalities. And then the patients will be more willing to accept their advice or treatment. For example, if less responsible people need to see a doctor, making a call to remind them is more suitable. So far, there has been very little research in this area, but it’s worth further study.
Until now, the research on personality and health has had little practical (实际的) use. By exploring their connection further, the relationship between researchers and health workers could be improved.

Are you tall or short? How do you feel about yourself?
I was walking down the street in Beijing the other day and passed a couple sitting on a bench. “She must be 180 centimeters tall,” I heard the woman say to the man. I turned to look at them straight in the eye at once. I felt angry and awkward (尴尬的) that they were talking about me. The woman suddenly said, “Oh, she must understand Chinese.” “Yes, I do,” I replied. Then, they both smiled and laughed, and so did I.
This was yet another time in China when strangers stared or talked about my appearance (外表). It’s either because of my unusually tall height as a woman or because I am a foreigner. As a shy person, this makes me feel quite uncomfortable. I just want to fit in! I usually just try to ignore (忽视) such people, but this time, as soon as I talked to the couple, they changed from strangers to people I just shared a warm and funny moment with.
It reminded me how important it is to have the right attitude (态度) and to be understanding. There aren’t that many foreigners in China, so it’s only natural that Chinese people will feel curious about foreigners and how they look different. Although, when people stare at you it feels a bit hostile (充满敌意的), most people are simply curious and may even want to chat with you.
In short, I can’t change this situation. The only thing I can change is my attitude toward it. Life is too short to be influenced by the little things. We need to enjoy each moment with a positive (积极的) and open attitude!

B.couldn’t understand why people were curious about her
C.was interested in telling her life in a foreign country
D.tried to put herself in other people’s shoes
4.What has the writer learned from her experience?
A.It’s hard for a foreigner to live abroad.
B.It’s impolite to judge people by their looks.
C.We should have a positive and open attitude.
D.You will never fit in with the people in foreign countries.

We can see circles, squares and triangles everywhere in our daily life. Have you thought about their meanings in films? Much like colors, different shapes can show different features (特点) of characters in the scenes.
Circles represent (代表) things that are soft and natural. The round shape reminds us of things that appear in nature, like the sun, raindrops and so on. We can also connect circles with beautiful eyes, babies’ round faces. All these things make us feel happy and warm. This is why so many cartoon characters bodies-heroes, good people are round in shape, because circles represent goodness.
Squares show things that are unnatural or man-made, or things that are boring or old-fashioned. In Up, Carl, has a square face and wears square glasses, while Russell, always wears round medals. These shapes show the characters’ personalities. Carl is stubborn (执拗的) and lonely.
The angriest shape is the triangle. Every kid who draws a monster with sharp teeth draws a row of triangles, don’t they? That’s because the shape represents fear, distrust and doubt in some way. Look at the bad guys in cartoons—they are all drawn with plenty of points and triangles, like Shengongbao in Ne Zha. And triangles are stable (稳固的) and don’t easily fall down. In films, this feature makes bad people difficult to deal with.
Not only in cartoons, but also in other kinds of films, different shapes are used for the same purpose. So, try to find the hidden shapes and you will know what the characters are like.

A.telling a story B.giving an example

Are you an “E person” or an “I person”? These two personality labels (个性标签) are widely discussed online. They are part of a popular personality test called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. There are 16 results in total of the test.
Usually, an “I person” is quiet, while an “E person” is outgoing. But an “I person” can still act outgoing sometimes. For example, when an “I person” is with a group of “I” friends, they might want to change and become more social like an “E person”.
According to psychologists (心理家), this idea of personality changing is called “masking” (伪装). That is hiding your true personality in certain situations. “Humans want to be welcomed, and they might change their personalities within a short time,” wrote the Master Class website.
Using the MBTI result to describe someone’s personality seems fun. However, I realized I was deeply influenced by the result once. My sister was excitedly making a travel plan. But I remembered from an article that a “P person” doesn’t like to make or follow plans. So I said to her, “You don’t seem like a ‘P person’.” “Why?” She asked back. “Because the personality test tells a ‘P person’ doesn’t like to make plans!” At that moment, I realized I’d taken the result too seriously.
The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself. And it can even be a fun way to start a conversation when meeting new friends. And that’s all for fun. Knowing someone’s MBTI result doesn’t mean you really know this person. And those results of yours don’t define (定义) who you are.

A.quieter B.more popular
C.more outgoing D.more typical
2.Humans change their personalities within a short time to _______.

B.The writer’s sister may take a trip soon.
C.The writer’s sister was influenced by the test result.
D.It’s not fun to use the MBTI result to describe someone.
4.If you know a person’s MBTI personality test result, you _______.
A.can’t see it as a fun game B.may still not know this person well

Are you afraid to speak in public? Are you a shy person? If you think you are too shy and want to be a little bit braver, try the following. You can make it.
★Tell people you’re shy.
There’s no need to hide it. When they get to know you are a shy kid, they’ll understand you better. This also helps you feel at ease in talks.
★Smile to everyone.
When you smile, people think you are friendly and easy to talk to. Remember that other people also have such feelings and most people will stay away from an angry-looking face.
★Say something nice about the people around you.
If you find it hard to start talks, say something nice about the people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn’t it make you want to keep talking to that person?
★Get your attention elsewhere.
Enjoy the party or the game. Don’t waste time worrying about your looks or whether people like you or not.
Take one small step at a time. Each time after you say “Hi” or smile at someone for the first time, say to yourself “I did it”! Or it could be something bigger, like buying yourself an ice-cream.

Are you an oldest child, a middle child, a youngest child or an only child? Nowadays, it is an accepted fact that our positions in the family possibly have the strongest influence on our characters.
Firstborn children often have to look after their younger brothers and sisters, so they’re usually responsible as adults. They also may be ambitious (有雄心的) and they make good leaders. On the negative side, the oldest children can be insecure. This is because when the second child is born, they lose some of their parents’ attention.
Middle children are more relaxed than the oldest children, probably because their parents will be more relaxed themselves when the second child arrives. They’re usually very sociable—the kind of people who get on with everybody. They are also more aware of what other people need, because they grow up between older and younger brothers and sisters. For the same reason, they’re often quite good at solving arguments. On the other hand, middle children sometimes are not ambitious and don’t have directions in life.
The youngest children are often very outgoing. This is the way they try to get the attention of both their parents and their older brothers and sisters. But they might depend too much on other people, because they have always been the baby of the family.
Only children usually do very well at school, because they have a lot of contact (联系) with adults. They get a lot of love and attention from their parents, so they’re often very self-confident. They’re also independent, as they spend much time by themselves. But they might get quite selfish and impatient.

3.What can we learn about introverts and extroverts as they age?
A.Introverts need to find ways to stop worrying about their age.
B.Extroverts can learn from introverts about ways to slow aging down.
C.Extroverts have the ability to deal with personal problems earlier in life.
D.Introverts’ qualities better suit the natural changes of the social world.

1.What do some health workers think of giving health care according to patients" personalities?
A.It’s very important and they must do it. B.It makes a big difference to all patients.

A.she understood Chinese B.the woman spoke loudly to her
C.they knew well each other D.she was proud of her appearance

② The writer felt angry and awkward.
③ The woman’s word about the writer’s height was heard by the writer.
④ The writer replied to the woman and shared a smile with them.
A.①④③② B.③①②④ C.③②④① D.①③④②
3.In Paragraph 4, we can know the writer ________.
A.was still angry with strangers’ staring and talking

1.An “I person” is usually _______ than an “E person”.
A.quieter B.more popular
C.more outgoing D.more typical
2.Humans change their personalities within a short time to _______.
A.be welcomed B.make new friends
C.be a psychologist D.laugh at others
3.What can we infer (推断) from Paragraph 4?
A.A “P person” doesn’t like to make plans.
B.The writer’s sister may take a trip soon.
C.The writer’s sister was influenced by the test result.
D.It’s not fun to use the MBTI result to describe someone.
4.If you know a person’s MBTI personality test result, you _______.
A.can’t see it as a fun game B.may still not know this person well
C.can’t find an interesting way to communicate D.won’t feel happy to stay with this person

②The study of 2,000 women has found that women visit the hairdresser five times a year on average, and about 100 like to try something different with each trip to the hairdresser. Almost half are willing to change their hairstyle.
