People think and talk about them a lot. Is this harmless fun or is it bad for us? How many people are truly crazy about modern idols (偶像)? And on the other side of the coin, is being famous harmful to the celebrities? Studies suggest that most of the teenagers do not really idolize celebrities. Researchers have found three kinds of fans. About 15% of young people have a social interest. They love chatting about their favorite celebrities with friends and this does not appear to do any harm. Another 5% feel that they have a strong personal relationship with a celebrity. Sometimes they see them as their soul-mates (心灵伴侣) and find that they are often thinking about them, even when they don’t want to. These people are easy to feel depressed. If girls in this group idolize a woman star with a body they consider to be perfect, they are more likely to be unhappy with their own bodies. That leaves 2% of young people with an unreasonable interest. They might spend several thousand pounds on a paper plate the celebrity had used, or they would do something lawbreaking. These people are in most danger of being seriously upset. What about the celebrities themselves? Some researchers in the USA did a study to find out the effect of being famous on these people. The study showed celebrities showed off too much and they were very narcissistic (自恋的). The researchers looked at 200 celebrities, 200 young adults with high education, who were a group known for being narcissistic, and some general population. As the researchers expected, the celebrities were much more narcissistic than the people with high education and both of these two groups were a lot more narcissistic than the general population. Four kinds of celebrities were included in the study. The most narcissistic were the ones who had become famous through reality TV shows. Next came comedians (喜剧演员), and then actors. The least narcissistic were musicians. One interesting result was that there was no connection between narcissism and the length of time the celebrity had been famous. So, what can we learn from this? Most people who are very successful or famous are usually self-centered and are likely to act only for their own benefits. As we can see from celebrity magazines, they also often feel lonely and even hopeless. They make harmful role models. 1.The underlined word “depressed” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”. New research suggests that turning off your smartphone’s Internet can improve your mental health, your ability to focus (专注), and your sense of well-being. ③A group of researchers in the United States and Canada wanted to know how turning off the Internet on smartphones would influence people’s feelings. They studied 467 people aged between 18 and 74. These people used a special app that blocked the Internet on their phones for two weeks. They could still make calls and send text messages. ④The researchers asked the people questions about their feelings and tested how well they could focus. The results were very interesting! My daughters sighed (叹息) when I gently took the iPads away from their laps (大腿). One by one, our screens were turned off. We lit the candles and sat down to have a big meal. We call it our “Technology Shabbat” (科技安息日), which lasts from sunset on Friday to sunset onSaturday. I first understood the importance of “Technology Shabbat” in 2008, when my father had got brain cancer. Some days he would have only one awake hour, and the only thing I wanted to do was to be with him. When I looked after my father,I turned off my mobile phone. During our “Technology Shabbat”, time slows down. Our Saturdays now feel like mini-vacations. We drive cars or ride bikes. We work in the garden, play board games and cook meals with our kids. I feel like a better mother, wife and person. Keeping a balance between the good and the bad of technology is important for my family. The technology helps us share knowledge and funny ideas all over the world. But the technology also takes something away from us. When we stay up late at night linking from website to website or sending messages, we click again and again until we have been overloaded (超负荷的). With the development of technology, more and more people are using the Internet to work, study, and communicate. However, just like any other thing, the Internet has both advantages and disadvantages. One of the biggest advantages of the Internet is the convenience it brings. We can easily access(获取)information, such as news, knowledge, and entertainment, at any time and from any place. For example, students can search for study materials online, and people can watch movies or listen to music on the Internet. Besides, the Internet also makes communication much easier. We can chat with friends and family members who are far away through social media platforms like WeChat and QQ. It breaks down the barriers(屏障)of distance. On the other hand, the Internet also has some disadvantages. One of the main problems is the spread of false information. Some people may post untrue or misleading information on the Internet, which can cause confusion and harm. Another problem is the negative influence on people's health. Spending too much time on the Internet, especially on mobile devices, can cause eye-strain, neck pain, and other health problems. Moreover, online privacy is also a big concern. Personal information can be easily leaked(泄露), which may put people in danger. In conclusion, the Internet is a double-edged sword. We should make good use of its advantages and try to avoid its disadvantages. 1.How can students use the Internet according to the passage? A.They can watch movies and listen to music. D.The Internet causes a lot of problems, so we should stop using it. 14 The Influence of Social Media on Teenagers Social media has become an important part of modern life, and its influence on teenagers is particularly significant. With the development of technology, teenagers today are growing up in a digital age where social media platforms such as WeChat, Instagram, and TikTok are easily accessible. On one hand, social media offers many opportunities for teenagers. It allows them to connect with friends and family, no matter how far apart they are. They can share their daily lives, photos, and thoughts, which helps to strengthen relationships. Social media also provides a platform for teenagers to express their creativity. For example, many teenagers create and share their own short videos, music, or artworks on these platforms, and some even gain a large number of followers and recognition. In addition, social media can be a source of learning. Teenagers can follow educational accounts, join online study groups, and learn about various topics from different parts of the world. It broadens their horizons and enriches their knowledge. However, social media also brings some challenges. One of the main problems is the potential negative impact on mental health. Constant exposure to the seemingly perfect lives of others on social media can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and low self-esteem among teenagers. Cyberbullying is another serious issue. Some teenagers may experience verbal abuse, threats, or harassment on social media, which can have a profound and long-lasting impact on their psychological well-being. A.sad B.afraid C.pleased D.hopeful 2.What can we learn from the passage? A.Most fans of celebrities want to become famous. B.Talking about celebrities does harm to teenagers. About 91% of people felt better in at least one area—either their mood (情绪), their focus, or their overall happiness. Seventy-one percent said they had better mental health after the two weeks, and 73% said they had improved well-being. The people also did better on focus tests—like they were 10 years younger! ⑤Looking more deeply into the reasons for these changes, the researchers found that when people weren’t using the Internet, they spent more time outside, got more exercise, met and talked to others. ⑥It was hard for many people to stay offline for two full weeks. In fact, only 25% actually did so! However, even those who only blocked the Internet for part of the time showed improvements. Some people kept using their phones less even after the two weeks were over. ⑦Although completely blocking the Internet from our smartphones might be difficult, the study shows that using it less—like spending less time on some apps—can help us feel better too. 1.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to? I will always remember the most important thing in my family: Technology Shabbat. 1.When is “Technology Shabbat” in the writer’s family? A.From sunrise on Friday to sunrise on Saturday. B.From sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. C.From sunrise on Friday to sunrise on Sunday. Moreover, excessive use of social media can affect teenagers’ study and daily life. Spending too much time on social media means less time for studying, sleeping, and physical activities.
