They “see” and “behave” appropriately through 2.various/varied(vary) hardware and deep-learning AI.First, cameras as well as sensors capture a variety of data from the external environment. Then the data 3.is sent(send) to the AI system so that it is analyzed and the car can “see” 4.its(it) surroundings and determine its position.Meanwhile, the AI system identifies patterns from the data and learns from them. Then an action plan is created 5.to instruct(instruct) the car how to “behave” in real time. This may sound perfect in theory,6.but in reality technological barriers in the development of self-driving cars exist,7.which remain to be overcome. The ethical responses self-driving cars would make in specific 8.circumstances(circumstance) are another aspect that needs careful 9.consideration(consider).Besides,the legal situations that the autonomous vehicle industry is confronted with have sparked debates.10.Despite all the challenges,it is certain that self-driving cars will form a big part of our future.
1.The car responds immediately(immediate),easing smoothly(smooth) into the busy traffic and avoiding obstacles(obstacle) on the road.(P30,Para.1)
easing...
2.Once the data is sent(send) to the AI system, the “brain” of the self-driving car,it is analysed and put together like a puzzle so that the car can “see” its surroundings(surrounding) and determine its position.(P30,Para.2)
3.Since it is unreasonable(reasonable) for the database to include every possible object in every possible condition ahead of time, the system might not recognize everything on the road.(P31,Para.3)
Since引导原因状语从句,it为形式主语,真正的主语是to include every possible object in every possible condition ahead of time。
4.Another aspect that needs careful consideration(consider) is the ethical responses self-driving cars would make in specific circumstances.(P31,Para.4)
that引导定语从句,self-driving cars would make...circumstances是省略了that/which的定语从句。
5.Besides such ethical concerns, the legal situations the autonomous vehicle industry is likely to be confronted with have fuelled heated(heat) debates.(P31,Para.5)
the autonomous vehicle industry is likely to be confronted with为省略了that/which的定语从句。
6.As advances in autonomous vehicle design and technology are in progress, the final agreement on laws and regulations governing this industry remains to be seen (see).(P31,Para.5)
7.Some argue that self-driving cars should be allowed to operate without human control, while others are more cautious (caution) and believe that human operation, even if limited,is still necessary.(P31,Para.6)
There can be little doubt that...
There can be little doubt that, despite all the challenges,self-driving cars will form a big part of our future.(P31,Para.6)

The Ragged School Museum
In a nutshell
In 1877 Dr Thomas Barnardo opened the Copperfield Road Free School, the largest of three ragged schools (charitable institutions that offered the poorest children a free education) in a row of three storehouses in East London. Now an underfunded, independent museum (opened in 1990),a small exhibition offers an insight into how tough life was in East London in the late 1800s,but the highlight is one of the original classrooms where visitors can attend a lesson led by an actor in Victorian costume. The museum is in the second phase of applying for a lottery grant(彩票福利基金),which will allow it to make vital repairs to the largest of the three storehouses, though the aim is to keep the authentic(真实的) atmosphere of the building.
Getting there
Easiest by car.The train station is a 30-minute walk away and trains are infrequent.A limited bus service from Liskeard drops you 20 minutes away.Parking is free right outside the gates.
Opening hours
10am-6pm Monday-Saturday.Last entry: 5:30pm.Outside these times the museum runs a school programme, with 16,000 school children coming through the doors each year.
Value for money?
A little pricey,but the ticket is valid for a year.Entry is £18 adult,£ 13 child,family tickets £37.60 (1 adult+3 children) or £49.60 (2 adults+3 children).
Verdict(评价)
8/10.Lots of ideas, interactive activities and friendly, knowledgeable staff. This is an authentic slice of East End history that strives (努力) to inspire children through its work.

Dubai is the commercial capital of the oil-rich United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf. But officials want to turn it into the world’s “smartest” city.Earlier this year,Dubai announced plans to be the world’s first city to use self-driving taxis. In June,it placed the first robot police officer at shopping centers and places popular with visitors.Dubai police officials now say they plan to use self-driving vehicles to patrol(巡逻) city streets by the end of the year.
Dubai will be the first in the world to use the O-R3 vehicle, according to the Singapore company that builds it.The company,OTSAW Digital, recently signed an agreement with the Dubai Police Force to supply the driverless robots.
The vehicles look a lot like most other automobiles, but are much smaller. They are equipped with cameras, machine learning tools and 3D technology to help them operate independently. The robots automatically charge themselves when power gets low.
The vehicle’s cameras can scan faces and record registration information to check for criminals and possible illegal activities.A police official said the robot can recognize people in any area.It will be used to “identify suspicious objects and follow suspects”.“We seek to increase operations with the help of technology such as robots,” said Dubai’s police chief.“We always search for the best technology to serve our police work for a safer and smarter city.”
The O-R3 can communicate with computers at police centers in different locations. The patrolling robot is able to send data and video to the centers, where operators can control the vehicle remotely. The vehicles can also work together with drones (无人机) that can be launched from the back of the robot. The drones can then follow the vehicles and provide more support from the air.
The CEO of OTSAW Digital,Ting Ming Ling, says the use of such vehicles is designed to help humans with their jobs, not replace them.“Eventually, robots exist to improve the quality of human lives, where men take on high value jobs while robots perform the low skilled ones,” he said.

Keep Current with Facts About Electric Cars
Sales of electric vehicles (EV) grew 40 percent last year worldwide.Stateside, nearly a third of drivers want their next car to be electric. 1 Almost 100 pure-electric vehicles are set to come into the market by the end of 2024.Many manufacturers, including GM,Jeep, and Volvo, have promised to offer fully electric lineups before this decade is done.
2 Tesla’s upcoming reimagined Roadster will start at $200,000,while Tesla’s current cheapest model is $41,000.Plenty of other EVs are even more affordable.Chevy,Nissan, and Hyundai all offer models for around $30,000.When assessing the cost of an EV,keep in mind that some models will even qualify you for a federal tax credit(联邦税收抵免) of up to $7,500. 3 A typical EV owner spends between $6,000 and $10,000 less than a conventional car owner on vehicle maintenance. One reason: EVs don’t have transmissions or clutches, two of the costliest parts to repair.
There are about 22,000 public charging ports nationwide,a number that is expected to be more than three times in the near future. But for most EV owners, charging at home is the way to go. 4
The average EV gets about 250 miles from a full charge, which is far less than the distance most gas-powered cars can go on a full tank. But EVs are catching up.Tesla comes the closest. Its newer version gets closer to 500. 5 BMW makes a fast-charging system that adds about 60 miles of drive time in about six minutes.
A.They’ll have options.
B.But electric cars are nothing new.

The best advertisement for public transportation is seeing a bus whoosh past lines of cars stuck in traffic. When transit is convenient, comfortable, affordable and faster than driving, the service practically sells itself. That’s why a recent bus lane boom in Los Angeles is so welcome.
Since 2019,Metro and the city’s Department of Transportation have rolled out nine new segments(路段) for a total of 40 miles of bus lanes on some of the most crowded streets with high bus ridership, such as La Brea Avenue,Venice Boulevard and Alvarado Street. The goal is to have 100 miles in place before the 2028 Olympics.
The result has been faster, more reliable service for passengers—and for drivers stuck in traffic, maybe even a little bus envy.Better bus service is essential to get people to jobs, schools and opportunities, and to entice drivers out of cars to help reduce planet warming emissions.
Great transformation has taken place since.Transit advocates have pressed Metro and elected officials to stop treating bus riders as an afterthought.Former Council member Mike Bonin, who also sat on Metro’s governing board, pushed for the creation of the Bus Speed and Reliability Working Group. With a clear goal—to speed up the buses—and a mandate(授权) from political leaders, staff at the two agencies were able to cut through bureaucratic barriers that often stymie(阻碍) public works projects.
Bus Rapid Transit,or busways, with dedicated lanes and special stops, have faced resistance from some residents and business owners, who worry about losing car lanes or parking. The compromise is that most bus riders get the benefit of bus lanes only during rush hours, from 7 to 10 a.m.and 4 to 7 p.m.These rush-hour lanes will demonstrate the benefits of giving people fast, convenient bus service,so L.A.’s political leaders will wholeheartedly support more dedicated busways and even 24-hour bus lanes.

There’s a continuing controversy over whether electric vehicles should produce sounds to let the blind and other pedestrians know they’re on the scene. Some think those sounds should be standardized—like the “beep, beep, beep” of heavy machinery backing up,so you’ll think “something heavy is coming this way” when you hear it—and some think any sound will do.
This is a serious subject.Plug-in hybrid cars(插电式混合动力车) and battery electric vehicles are super-quiet,and a study at the University of California,Riverside concludes that people listening to recordings on headphones can hear a regular gas car coming from 28 feet away, but a hybrid in battery mode only when it’s 7 feet away.
In response, the European Union has put new rules into play: all new electric vehicle models must have a sound-producing device, which sounds like a traditional engine.Starting in 2021,all new electric vehicles of any model will need the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System or AVAS.That sound will come into play when the car is traveling backwards or when it’s traveling at less than 12 miles an hour—speeds at which cars are more likely to be mixing with pedestrians.
That’s a nice start, say representatives for the blind, but more is needed.“We’re calling on the government to take this announcement further by requiring AVAS on all existing electric and hybrid vehicles and ensuring drivers have them switched on,” John Welsman, guide dog owner and Guide Dogs staff member, said in a statement.
Drivers in most cases have the ability to shut off the device when needed. My guess is that they will eventually be standardized so your mind will automatically register “electric car” when you hear it.And that’s probably a good thing to reduce the mayhem (混乱) on the roads.
