2021年6月新高考卷(为母亲准备早餐)
A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

第二部分 模拟演练(10篇)
1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“She wants a what?” barked the fruit seller. I was in one of the many street markets of Luzhou, a small city located in China’s Sichuan Province. Already, a crowd of curious on - lookers was gathering: white - haired grandmas, toothless old men, mothers holding infants. Everyone was waiting, wondering why the foreigner was causing such a fuss(大惊小怪).
I took a deep breath. The crowd leaned in. “Do you have a pumpkin?” I asked as clearly as possible. A mother holding an infant explained in English that there was no pumpkin here. I had to move on to yet another market in my search for Halloween.
As an American English teacher in China, the urge was strong to explain my country’s cultural traditions to my students. I’d had plenty of success in teaching the Chinese about significant United States holidays and events, Halloween being one of them. Yet I was now in a new teaching position, in a different region of the country which seems to have every kind of produce known to man except the one I wanted for Oct.31.
I had learned that in teaching about Halloween, there was no substitute(替代品)for a carved pumpkin. Descriptions produced blank stares. Drawings were misinterpreted. Pictures only puzzled.
Sure, I could give up showing a real jack-o’- lantern(南瓜灯)to my students. I could lecture on the history of this tradition, which had its origin in old beliefs about the return of the spirits of dead people. We could have a go at wearing masks, and role- play trick - or - treat.
But nothing could compare with the pumpkin. For that reason, I was willing to go through just about anything to find a pumpkin for my students.
In another section of the city, I headed to a big market. “Do you have a pumpkin?” I asked the seller I saw. “A what?” she seemed to be at a loss. However, I didn’t know how to make her understand what I wanted.

Suddenly, an idea occurred to me. I could bridge the language gap with visuals! I drew a simple sketch of a pumpkin, complete with a stem on top and the characteristic ridges (纹路). “I need something like this,” I said, showing my drawing to the seller. She studied the sketch with curiosity, then looked up at me, understanding dawning on her face. After a moment, she disappeared behind a pile of produce and soon returned with a round, orange pumpkin. “That’s it!” I exclaimed, my face lit up with joy. Immediately I rushed back home, starting to carve my beautiful pumpkin.
On Oct. 31, I brought the carefully- carved pumpkin into the class. The students gathered around, their eyes wide with curiosity as they observed the delicately carved face with a flickering candle inside. It was indeed a traditional jack-o’- lantern, and it captured the essence of the holiday. As the light cast shadows around the room, I began to tell them about the origins of Halloween, the legends of spirits and the custom of carving pumpkins to drive off evil spirits. They listened attentively, eyes fixed on me. We were all connected through the universal language of celebration and tradition despite the cultural differences.

It was late December. It was the great Christmas shopping time. I asked my son and daughter to go together, but they preferred to play at home.
People were busy buying gifts for their beloved ones. It seemed that the bigger the gifts were the better they would be. I shook my head sadly and walked on. I was shopping alone trying to pick up some thick winter socks to warm my frozen feet.
As I rounded the corner in the store I saw a Christmas tree full of paper angels (天使). On each angel was the name of a needy child whose family couldn’t afford to buy them a gift that year. Shoppers who picked an angel could buy a simple toy or gift. The store would wrap it and send it to the child at Christmas.
Around the tree I saw a teenage boy and girl picking out several angels. Their mother was smiling while she watched them. I walked up next to her and started talking with her. She told me that her children started this several years ago when she first explained to them what the Charity Angel tree was for. Each offered to give up one of their toys that year so that a needy child could have one. It didn’t stop then, though. Each year since the kids had saved money they earned throughout the year and bought more and more children the gifts they wouldn't have otherwise. It had become a family tradition.

Her voice faded, and before I knew it, I was standing before the Christmas tree. Glancing at the flying paper angels, I felt a surge of warmth welling up inside me. I carefully chose one with the name of a 10-year-old boy, whose family struggled to make ends meet. Determined to bring him joy, I picked out a cool model airplane and a set of storybooks. As I placed the wrapped gifts at the collection desk, the brother and sister, who had sparked my inspiration, flashed me a bright smile, their eyes filled with encouragement. I responded with a smile and a thumbs-up.
Waving them goodbye, I left the store, a plan for next Christmas taking shape in my mind. I decided to involve my son and daughter, who would surely be touched by this meaningful act. The moment I got home, I showed them photos of the Charity Angel tree and shared the heartwarming stories. Moved by what I told them, they immediately agreed to save money and join me next year. From then on, our family would also contribute to spreading love during Christmas, making helping others an unforgettable tradition.

They don’t mean it
Our family moved here from China two years ago, and we thought we were pretty well adjusted to American ways. This year my parents decided to give a party on Chinese New Year and invite some of our American friends.
The party went pretty well. Our guests were amazed at the flavor of all the special foods. After the dinner, they thanked us for showing them what a real Chinese New Year dinner was like.
“I loved the dishes. You and the girls must have spent hours doing all the work!” Mrs. O’Meara said to my mother.
“The girls helped with the cutting and I’m sorry they did such a terrible job.” said Mother.
I heard a little gas(倒吸气)from my friend Kim O’Meara, who stared wide-eyes at Mother. When I asked what the matter was, she told me she just didn’t understand why my mother said so.
I had to laugh. “She doesn’t mean it! It’s just the way she talks.”
Seeing her still confused look, I went on explaining, “In China, parents consider it good manners to deny praises about their children. Otherwise, it would be the same as bragging (自夸).” Kim seemed a little hesitant, but she nodded anyway.
That Easter, the O’Mearas invited our family for dinner. Mrs. O’Meara cooked a huge ham which we enjoyed a lot. As Mrs. O’Meara started cutting up the cake for dessert, Mother said, “I’m not sure if I can eat one more bite. That was the best ham I’ve ever tasted!”
“Aw, that ham was terrible,” said Kim. “I bet you could do a lot better, Mrs. Yang.”

There was a stunned(震惊的) silence around the table. Kim was on the receiving end of a cold stare from Mrs. O’Meara, whose face reddened with embarrassment. I was also shocked at my friend’s mean remark. Clearing my throat, I finally asked, “What made you talk like that to your mother?” Kim whirled around, seemingly furious“But you were the one who told me that saying nice things about your own family was the same as bragging!” she stuttered. “I was just trying to act modest!”
I finally knew how Kim had misunderstood what I had said.“Listen, Kim,” I took her hands in mine to calm her down, “Chinese parents might say critical things about their children to show modesty but young people are always expected to be respectful to the elders.” Hearing this, Kim sighed deeply, her cheeks flushed. “Mommy, daddy!” young Matt screamed, running into the house. “Our lantern is gone,” he explained as he tried to catch his breath. Matt, with his mother and father following, walked outside and looked at the Spring Festival decorations adorning the front of their house. “It's gone,” his father sighed, noticing the missing lantern. “I bet it was stolen by a neighbor.” “That lantern was my favorite decoration,” Matt sadly noted. “Do you think we can get it back?” “I don't know, son,” his father replied in a frustrated tone. All three retreated(离开)back into the house. The atmosphere had changed from happy and cheery to somber and reflective. An uncharacteristic silence had smothered the holiday spirit.
Darkness fell with Matt and his father standing on the sidewalk gazing at the lighted decorations. Their eyes kept returning to the empty place where the lantern had been hung. Both Matt and his father remained void of any holiday cheer.
Matt’s mother came outside to join them. “Come on guys,” she pleaded, “cheer up... it’s Spring Festival.” “I miss my lantern, Mommy. We made it with our own hands. Not worth a lot of money but it does have a lot of memories,” Matt replied with a sad tone. “I just can't understand why someone would steal it,” Matt's father added. “Look,” Matt’s mother interrupted, “you two are letting this ruin your festival. We have each other, a beautiful home, and look at all those wonderful decorations on our house and the other houses on our street.” “I keep hoping my lantern will come home,” Matt sighed. “Well, I will go inside and turn on some good music and try to enjoy the evening,” Matt’s mother proclaimed(明确表示)as she walked away.
A distant crisp jangling of the bicycle interrupted the discussion. They looked at that direction as two figures approached. “It looks like a man and a boy,” Matt’s father observed. “and that’s our lantern behind their bicycle seat!”

The man came over and asked politely, “Is this your house?” Matt’s father nodded cautiously, noticing their lantern. “We found it damaged on the sidewalk,” the boy explained shyly. “The frame was bent and the candleholder loose — we just wanted to fix it.” Matt’s eyes widened. “So you didn’t steal it?” Relief washed over the family as the boy shook his head. “Thank you,” Matt’s father said sincerely. “This means so much to us.” The man smiled warmly, “Spring Festival should be about kindness.”
The boy proudly handed back the beautifully restored lantern. Its frame straightened, silk polished, with a new tassel gleaming. “It’s better than before!” Matt gasped. His mother clasped her hands, “You've given us more than a decoration.” Touched, Matt’s father invited them in for snacks. As laughter filled the house, Matt realized the true festival magic wasn’t in decorations, but in the kindness that made them special. Outside, neighborhood lights twinkled like stars, mirroring their joy.

Annabelle’s best friend, Lucy, had a deep love for trees. She spent her free time climbing trees, finding joy in their branches and leaves. She also loved to draw pictures of trees, capturing their grace and beauty on paper. Whenever her favorite tree-printed shirt was clean, she wore it with pride. Today was Arbor Day, a day dedicated to celebrating and planting trees. Annabelle wanted to make it special for Lucy.
“Happy Arbor Day,” Annabelle called out, her voice filled with enthusiasm as she pedaled her bike up to where Lucy and Ethan were standing. Ethan, however, looked puzzled. “What’s Arbor Day?” he asked in confusion. Lucy’s eyes lit up as she explained, “It’s a holiday to celebrate trees, my favorite one!” Ethan’s frown(皱眉)deepened, and he shook his head, insisting, “Arbor Day is not a real holiday.” Lucy’s face flushed(脸红)with embarrassment. Before she could respond, Annabelle stepped in firmly. “It is a real holiday,” Annabelle said confidently, “And Lucy and I are here to celebrate it in our own special way.”
Lucy, though passionate about trees, had never given thought to planning an Arbor Day celebration. Seeing her friend’s hesitation, Annabelle’s determination only grew stronger. “We’ll show Ethan,” Annabelle whispered to Lucy, leading her into the garage. “First, we’ll hang decorations.” She scanned the holiday storage boxes, finding decorations for Halloween with its ghosts and goblins, Christmas with its twinkling lights and stars, and Valentine’s Day with its hearts and love notes. But there was no sign of Arbor Day decorations, no leaves or tree-themed stuff.
“Mom,” Annabelle called out with hope, “where are our Arbor Day decorations?” Her mother replied with a gentle smile, explaining that they had never had any specific decorations for Arbor Day. But Annabelle wasn’t easily discouraged.

“Let’s make our own,” Annabelle suggested, her eyes shining with excitement. “We can create our own Arbor Day decorations using things we have around the house. We’ll craft paper leaves and tree cutouts, and maybe even make some garlands with twine and pine cones.” Lucy’s face lit up as the idea began to take shape. Together, they rummaged through craft supplies, finding colored paper, scissors, and glue. They worked diligently, transforming plain materials into vibrant tree-themed decorations. By the time they finished, the garage had been transformed into a beautiful forest, ready to celebrate the day in true spirit. The two girls called Ethan to come over.
“What are you doing?” asked Ethan, as he stepped into the garage and saw the decorations. Lucy and Annabelle beamed at him, their creation now complete. “It’s for Arbor Day,” Annabelle replied, her voice filled with pride. “We wanted to show you that even if it’s not a widely known holiday, it’s still special to us. And we hope it can be special to you too.” Ethan’s frown softened, and a hint of a smile played on his lips. “Alright,” he said, “I’ll play along. Lead the way.” As they walked out of the garage, hand in hand, Lucy felt a surge of happiness. Today, she had not only celebrated Arbor Day but also strengthened her bond with her friends, proving that sometimes, the best celebrations are the ones you create yourself.

On the walk home from school, my friend, Cherry, happily said, “Tomorrow is Mother’s Day. I’ve been saving up for the past month and plan to buy my mother the perfume(香水)she’s been wanting for so long.” Her excitement made me realize that I hadn’t prepared anything special yet. But I only had a little money left. I began to regret spending so much on snacks every day.
I continued walking along the road, carefully thinking about what gift I should choose. I planned to buy something like flowers or chocolate, but now it seemed like those were way too simple. Therefore, I pushed open the door to a mall and tried to find the perfect gift. The bright lights shined the collection of various goods. I picked up a lipstick (口红) but immediately put it back after seeing its price. I could never afford that! Then I walked into another shop and saw a lovely cup. I picked it up and turned it over to see the price listed, hoping it was not too expensive. But once again, I couldn’t afford it even with all the money that I had. Feeling sad, I continued to wander around the shops. Time flew by quickly, and before I knew it, the sky began to darken, so I had to go home.
Since there was no time or money for me to pick out a gift, I decided to make a simple card. I held up the card, examining its hardcover, handwritten letter and the tiny pictures I’d drawn of my mom and me. It’s probably never going to compare to the expensive gifts that my friends bought for their mothers, I thought sadly.

When Valentine’s Day was around the corner, Grandma came down with a terrible cold as she was travelling from Colorado to my family’s house in California. She was too weak to go out at all, which was sad and disappointing. Grandma and Grandpa had been planning to take my little sister Indi and me to the zoo for Valentine’s Day. Grandma, as an animal lover, had been especially looking forward to it.
On Valentine’s Day, Indi begged Grandma to go to the zoo with us. But Grandma jokingly explained that if she went there, she might spread her cold to other visitors, or even to the animals, making them all start sneezing.
I imagined the sight of an elephant kept sneezing. Meanwhile, I pretended my arm was a trunk and blurted out a funny trumpeting sound that ended with a gigantic sneeze. “Good one, brother,” Indi laughed. “That elephant would need a huge box of tissues.”
Grandma was amused. But she insisted that she should stay at home and rest up. She wished us a pleasant visit and reminded us to send her regards to the monkeys.
Well, we did go and we did have a great time, but I kept wishing Grandma could have been there with us. When we reached the monkey mountain, Grandpa suggested taking a picture with the monkeys and told us to hold still and say “cheese”.
“Cheese,” I said. But Indi said, “Happy Valentine’s Day, Grandma!”
“You were supposed to say cheese,” said Grandpa.
Indi shrugged, “It just came out.”
“I’m glad it did,” I said. “Because you’re just given me a fantastic idea. What if we take pictures of different animals, and then turn them into a special Valentine gift for Grandma?” Indi and Grandpa agreed and we kept taking pictures for Grandma.

When we got home, we set about making the gift. We printed out the photos we had taken at the zoo, each one capturing a different animal in its playful or majestic moments. Indi and I carefully selected the best shots, making sure to include the monkeys as per Grandma’s request. We then took out a beautiful photo album and lovingly arranged the pictures inside, adding little notes about each animal and the memories they brought back. It was a labor of love, and we were excited to see Grandma’s reaction.
Then we took the gift upstairs to Grandma’s room. We tiptoed in, trying not to disturb her, but her eyes lit up as soon as she saw the wrapped photo album in our hands. “What’s this?” she asked. We handed her the gift, and as she flipped through the pages, her face broke into a wide smile. “Oh, this is the best Valentine’s Day gift ever,” she exclaimed. “Thank you, my darlings. This means so much to me.” We sat with her, sharing stories about the day and watching her delight as she revisited the zoo through our pictures. It was a moment of pure happiness, and we knew that even though she wasn’t physically with us at the zoo, she was very much a part of our adventure.

An Unforgettable Thanksgiving
We were living in Jakarta, Indonesia. However, our family of six had to experience a holiday without my wife, Esther, who was in Singapore. This meant that I was in charge of our four children. It was a struggle, putting in part-time at the union mission office, then coming home to manage the children.
Shortly after arriving in Indonesia, I made friends with some of the employees at the United States embassy, where a number of United States marines(海军陆战队)were stationed, and I had great conversations with them. I checked out films from the United States Information Service office at the embassy to show to our children and neighbors.
With Thanksgiving week upon us I thought what we would do to celebrate. Many thoughts ran through my mind. The film about the National Football League game of the week could be checked out for a few days.
The Sunday before Thanksgiving, the quiet of our house was disrupted by the sound of a jeep. We heard it drive up and stopped in our driveway. Before we could determine who had come to visit us, a big muscular man was knocking at our door. It was Willie, one marine guard stationed at the United States Embassy. He held a big box in his arms, leaving me instructions: “Pastor Jones, let’s have a real nice Thanksgiving dinner together, OK?” Then out the door he went, “I’ll bring four other marine guards”. I immediately investigated the contents of the box: a frozen turkey and a half-gallon container of Magnolia ice cream — Singapore’s best brand.
The next day I walked from our union mission office to our home. I came across one of my newly-made friends, Tim. He was walking along, depressed and downhearted. I greeted him and asked, “What’s the matter, Tim?”
“Pastor Jones,” he said, “this is our first Thanksgiving away from home, and my wife and I are in the dumps. We went shopping for a turkey for Thanksgiving, and all we could find was a lot of skinny chickens. No turkeys anywhere. Thanksgiving will be no perfect despite my wife’s excellent cooking skills.”

No turkey? First Thanksgiving away from home? I made a deal with Tim on the spot. If he would ask his wife to prepare the turkey, they could take part of it for themselves and let the marines from the U. S. embassy eat the rest of it. “Yes!” he responded quickly, as if to seal the deal before I could change my mind. “She’ll be glad to do that.” Later that day Tim was at my home to get the big frozen turkey. A day later he returned the “marine” portion of the cooked bird with many words of appreciation. When Thanksgiving Day came, we five Joneses were ready. We had the National Football League game of the week to watch after dinner. We had the “marine” part of the turkey on a platter with all the trimmings.
At the appointed time we heard the jeep from the embassy at the gate of our house. The hungry marines all wearing civilian clothes, got out of the jeep and eagerly entered our house, where the aroma of food filled the air. What a dinner that was and how unusual—five marines, four children and me! When the meal was finished, they wanted to go outside and shoot basketball on our little court. My children enjoyed watching them shoot baskets and laugh at one another. It was truly a fun time! Returning to the house, we served the pie and ice cream, watched the football game, and finally said goodbye. The food was abundant and delicious, the fellowship was superb, the recreation was relaxing. An unforgettable Thanksgiving!

My parents and I were enjoying the first Easter(复活节)we had ever spent away from home. As an anxious little boy, I had asked my mom several times whether we could get the Easter egg.
On Easter morning, my parents and I discovered that the Easter Bunny had visited during the night and left eggs on the hotel’s lawn (草坪)for all the kids. As we walked towards the group of adults and kids waiting for the start of the searching game, I noticed that all of the kids were much bigger than me except for a little boy in a red T-shirt. It wasn’t looking good.
“I will get an egg, right?” I asked my mom. “Yes, of course.” she replied, with a confident smile. I nervously held the handle of my Easter basket and my heart began racing as a hotel staff member yelled. “We are starting in 3...2...1… Go!” Kids rushed across the lawn, running from tree to tree looking for the plastic Easter eggs filled with candies. I ran to the closest tree but did not find any eggs. Then I ran to a nearby sandpit (沙坑) hoping there would be an egg hidden there. But there wasn’t. I looked across the lawn and saw other kids successfully holding up their plastic eggs and knew my chance of finding even one egg was decreasing On the other side of the lawn stood the little boy in red who was also empty-handed. Just then my mom pointed out a big tree across the lawn. “Look! There’s one!”

Marcus sat by his window, looking at the blinking lights on other buildings. He thought of Papa, who was visiting Marcus sick grandpa in Jamaica. “I’ll try to help Mama while you’re gone,” Marcus had promised his father.
His little brother, Peter, sat beside him and asked when they could get their Christmas tree so that he could decorate it with Mama’s Jamaican straw birds. Mama walked up and told them they couldn’t get a tree this year; she explained there were too many bills because of grandpa’s disease and that they couldn’t afford one.
Someone knocked on their apartment door suddenly, and Marcus hurried to the door, only to see it was his friend Jack. He let him in, and Jack looked around, “No tree yet? I set up an artificial tree a week ago. It’s up to the ceiling(天花板). Just two more days till Christmas! I guess you’re not getting a tree.” Marcus walked slowly to his room and shook his piggy bank(存钱罐). Seven dollars and some dimes(十分硬币)fell out - his trips from helping at the market. He thought he could earn enough money in two days to buy a tree and surprise Mama and Peter.
The next day, he stayed busy pushing carts to help shoppers. By the time he left, six more dollars were in his pocket. “My lucky day,” he thought. Thirteen dollars should buy a small tree. He whistled all the way to the store. But even the smallest trees were $15 or more. “Tomorrow will be busy with shoppers,” he thought. He was determined to earn those extra dollars.
The telephone rang early the next morning. Mama came into his room and said, “I need to go out today, Marcus. I’ll need you to take care of Peter for one day.” Marcus anxiously said it would be the busiest day at Mr. Smith’s market and he had to be there. “I’m so sorry. There’s nothing else we can do.” Mama gave Marcus a hug, promised to come early and headed for work.

“I’ll never get a tree now,” Marcus thought. Later, Peter pleaded, “Can we go out?” After thinking for a moment, Marcus nodded. He took his brother to the tree lot. There, he saw that most of the trees were gone, including the one he had been wanting. Then Marcus saw a very small tree in the corner. He asked if it was for sale. The seller said “That’s my last growing tree. It is small now, but it will grow tall as you do. It is Christmas Eve. For you, six dollars.” They bought the tree. With the rest of their money, they bought a scarf for Mama, a fire truck for Peter, a wallet for Marcus and a red tie, which matched black suits, for Papa.
Marcus set their tree on the table. They began placing Mama’s straw birds on the branches. They also decorated the tree with a variety of lamps and hung the gifts. So when Mama got home, it was such a great surprise that she was moved to tears. They sang and danced around the tree, spending an unforgettable Christmas. Marcus thought “When Papa returns, he’ll see that I keep my promise to help Mama while he is away.”

“Do you have a pumpkin?” I asked as clearly as possible.A mother holding an infant explained in English that there was no pumpkin here.

Yang.”

I imagined the sight that an elephant kept sneezing.

I looked across the lawn and saw other kids successfully holding up their plastic eggs and knew my chance of finding even one egg was decreasing. On the other side of the lawn stood the little boy in red who was also empty-handed.
