A Good Idea to Help the Neighbor
The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy, his name was Bernard, had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish.”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

When they got home, they made a lot of popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told Bernard how to sell the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And Meredith family also felt very happy to help this family.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He took the popcorn around to the houses and sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self-dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs. Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and salt to the popcorn to make it taste better. Bernard grew up to be a remarkable man. He did not forget the help of Meredith’s family, and he also did what he could to help those in need.

Last night came the first snow of the year. The trees put on caps overnight and the little town was blanketed with fresh snow. The children had a snow day off from school. For them, the fall of snow was a magical event. Jack could hardly wait to go outside. His mother handed him a scarf, a hat and mitts and suggested he build a snowman.
Jack dressed, got a bucket and collected everything he needed to decorate his snowman. He walked into his front yard, happy to hear the snow crunch under his feet. He first packed some snow and made a very small ball. Then he got on his knees and rolled the snow into a big ball.
At another window, a little girl flattened her nose against the cold window, watching Jack play alone. It was his new neighbour Nancy. Nancy asked her mother if she could go outside and play. Her mother agreed. Immediately, Nancy zipped up her coat, tugged (用力拉上) her boots and ran outside to Jack’s yard. She said hello and asked if she could help him finish his snowman. Jack nodded willingly.
“Okay. What can I do?” asked Nancy.
“I built my snowman’s body with two snowballs. I need to roll one more for its head.” “But snowmen only have two snowballs. One is for the body and one is for the head,” Nancy laughed.
“No, snowmen always have three snowballs,” Jack argued. “I don’t think I need you to help me after all.” He made a small snowball and rolled it away, leaving Nancy alone.
Low in spirits, Nancy thought to herself, “I’m going to make my own.”

Nancy walked back to her own yard. She began to build her own snowman. First she rolled two big balls of snow and put them on top of each other. To make the snowman look beautiful, she decorated it with her hat and scarf. Then she found some sticks and pine cones for snowman’s eyes, mouth and arms. Looking at the beautiful snowman, Nancy overflowed with happiness and achievement. Meanwhile, Jack also finished his snowman. As he stood back to admire his own work, unexpectedly, its head fell off and crashed to the ground! “Oh no! My snowman fell apart!” Jack cried, tears of sadness rolling down his face.
Hearing Jack’s cry, Nancy ran over to his yard. In front of her was a snowman whose head shattered into pieces on the snow. Nancy comforted Jack, “It doesn’t matter. I’ll help you roll a new ball.” Hearing this, Jack wiped off the tears and his eyes soon lit up. Together, they rolled a new snowball, lifted it up onto the snowman’s body and decorated it again. Finally a new snowman was born! Jack jumped with joy and held Nancy’s hands, saying with a trace of blush, “Thank you for making my day.” Nancy gave him a big grin, “Our snowmen are good neighbors!”

He was there every morning, sitting motionless on the front steps of his house. His bright blue eyes seemed so distant and sad. Every morning, I walked this route with my daughter to her kindergarten. We were new to the neighbourhood, so I didn’t know many of my neighbours. On one beautiful morning, as we passed his house, my daughter piped up and called out to him, “Hi, Mr. Man!”She was an outgoing girl, and I wasn't surprised at her cheerfulness, but her enthusiasm soon faded when the man didn’t look at her or say ‘Hi’ back.
As we continued on our walk to school, my daughter asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Stumbling over words, because I didn’t have the answer, I said simply, “Maybe he is having a bad day.”
Once back home, I tackled the breakfast dishes, and I thought about Mr. Man.What was his story? Why did he seem so sad?1 wanted to do something to cheer him up. I thought of a few ways to make his day a bit brighter, but nothing seemed special enough.
The next morning, after dropping my daughter off at school, I saw one of my other neighbours tending her front garden. After I introduced myself, she invited me in for a chat. She was a long-time resident of the neighbourhood, who knew everyone and everything. She was a bubbly personality, but when I asked her about the man who lived nearby, she grew serious. Bob recently lost his wife in a car accident. He hasn’t been the same since.
The following week seemed to fly by. I had talked to my daughter about what we could do to make Mr. Man smile.

With every suggestion I made, she simply said “No, not that.”Under my questioning, she spoke her own mind. She wanted to write an invitation to Bob this afternoon, inviting him to come over for the evening. I could make a nice dinner for him, and we could eat and talk with him as a family, so he wouldn’t be so sad and lonely. The happy atmosphere of the family can make people feel happiness from the bottom of their hearts. In the evening, when Bob came over for dinner with the family, the atmosphere was a little awkward at first. Later, in our conversation and laughter, Bob laughed in delight. After dinner, we invited him to come over often. The next morning, we received a letter.
Inside, in perfect calligraphy, it simply read, “Thank you, from Mr. Man.”When we opened the letter, we saw that it was written by Bob. We were happy because Bob had regained his hope for life. A month later, Bob came to our house with a gift. My family is very happy. Bob told us about his recent situation. He had begun to work hard and to live happily. Once again, thanks to us.

Tonny and Danial were twins and had been my next door neighbours since I was five years old. Not only did we go to the same school, but our evenings and weekends were spent together too. It was like we were inseparable. I never felt that I needed any friends other than them. Unexpectedly, one evening their parents shared the news of them moving to another country.
I was shocked to realise that now we would never be together. I started recalling all the good times we had spent together, such as playing in the school breaks, the play dates, the tricks we played and all the fun things we did. Was it all going to end?
When we had been through so many highs and lows together, shared secrets and supported each other through thick and thin, their moving away felt like a part of me was being ripped away (猛力撕开). The news of their departure (离开) left me feeling empty and lost.
I was thinking about the biggest change that I was going to face in a few days. It was a difficult pill to swallow, but I knew I must move on. Though it wasn’t easy at first, I was trying my level best to beat the mental pain I was in.
After hearing the news, every day felt like a struggle, the school didn’t feel the same; the lunch breaks had no purpose. Soon there would be no one to compare the test marks with, homework remarks would not excite me like before, and so on. I couldn’t help but feel lost and alone already.

In their last ten days here, they had quit school, we made a list of things we always planned on doing and, one by one, we did those things. We watched a movie, went out for lunch, baked a cake, and went for a picnic to a water park. We created more memories that would last a lifetime and we could look back on fondly. It was challenging to come to terms with the situation I was in, but my parents helped me realise that one way to help cope with emotions is to create memories.
When the departure day came, saying goodbye wasn’t easy. Tonny, Danial and I hugged each other tightly, unable to contain sadness with tears streaming down our cheeks. In order to relieve our pain of departure, our parents promised to keep us connected through online meetings once every week. They also encouraged sharing photos of activities we did on the weekends. All these efforts helped me regain my jovial self, and the realization that even when they moved so far, we could still be the closest best friends, set my heart at ease.

When we were finally dismissed from the last class of the day, the students streamed out of the classrooms. It was another boring day after school. I dragged my feet home as I sighed. Yet another uneventful day, I thought. Little did I know that the day would take a turn for the worse.
The lift lobby (电梯间) of my flat was old and dirty. The walls, which were painted white, had been dirtied over many years. I reached my flat’s lobby, and pressed the lift button and went in. Just then, Mrs Lim, my elderly neighbour, hobbled (蹒跚) in. She looked ancient with tissue paper white hair, wearing a faded old-fashioned dress. I held the lift door open, flashing a friendly smile, and politely greeted her. I asked her how she felt that day and pressed the buttons. She thanked me for being so polite, then we were silent for the rest of the ride.
The lift fell increasingly fast. There were loud clanking sounds here and there while the lift grew slower and slower. My heart beat hard and fast as my hands turned cold and wet with sweat. Unfortunately, the lift came to an abrupt stop at the fifth floor. I pressed the buttons hard several times, but it was of no help. The lights on the buttons had gone out. It soon dawned on me that we were trapped. An icy fear crept up my spine. Mrs Lim was hysterical (歇斯底里).

“We will never get out!” she cried with her face pale. I tried my very best to comfort her, telling her that everything would be all right and that we needed to find out how to get out safely. Mrs Lim began having trouble breathing, and I immediately helped her sit down and loosened her collar. “Help!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, trying to get someone’s attention. A wave of despair washed over me. I felt as if we could never get out. In one last effort, I tried banging on the doors. The next few minutes felt like hours as we waited in complete silence.
Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door. Help was finally here! The brave firefighters hit the door open using their tools. It felt like a hundred pound weight was lifted off me, and Mrs Lim thanked the heavens that someone had come to our rescue. I made a sigh of relief when the doors were finally opened and all this drama was over. The firefighters praised me for helping Mrs Lim. I returned their praise with gratitude and Mrs Lim thanked me and even gave me a hug..

I had just poured my second cup of tea that morning and sat down to read the paper. From somewhere, an inner voice said, “Go and see Jeff and bring him the chair to repair. Go right now.”
It was such a strong impulse that I hurriedly dressed and lugged a dining-room chair to his door. Jeff was a neighbour who had lost his wife a while back, and he occasionally did minor repairs for me on furniture because he enjoyed working with his hands.
I knocked on his door and waited a while. I was about to walk away when he answered. He looked like he was far away in his thoughts. I felt awkward about disturbing him so early. I greeted him and then asked if he could repair my chair. He invited me inside. We sat in his living room. He looked depressed and not his usual self. He said he had had a stroke recently, and while he was home now, he still needed to attend outpatient physical therapy. He had to build his strength back up. I apologized for the chair and told him under the circumstances I would just bring it back home. He said to leave it.
We talked for a while. It had scared him to be in the hospital. He hadn’t been there since his wife had died. Having worked as a mental health therapist, I listened to how hard it had been since his wife passed away and how much worse it was now since the stroke. The longer we talked, the more I saw his mood lighten.
We even started talking about his diet and how he had not been eating. He said the dietician had told him to eat more fruits and vegetables, but he didn’t care for them. Mostly, I was concerned because he was not eating much at all. I stayed talking with him until I saw his mood lift and the tension leave his face.

After I left his home, I went to the grocery store and gathered ingredients. I made him a hot meal, which I thought would lift his spirits. Carefully, I cut up some vegetables and prepared a dish for him. I believed it was the best dish I’d ever made. Then, I made some home-made biscuits and prepared fresh fruit for dessert. I dropped it off for him. He was delighted that someone cared. Emotionally, he seemed in a better place.
The next time I saw him, he said the dish was wonderful. Though I am usually skeptical of praise, I understood because I’d made it with love. He talked of his next physical-therapy appointment. I made sure he had transportation; I would gladly have driven him, but he had figured it out. What’s more, he repaired my chair. He said it gave him a reason to get his strength back. He had returned to his usual self, and his confidence had returned. I was so thankful for the inner voice that directed me to see him that morning.

Glenfield was the kind of town where people took care of each other in a quiet, New England sort of way. When there was a need, there was always someone there to meet it. Few had to ask for help and few expected thanks from others. In general, everyone gave when they could and received when they had to. The atmosphere of the residents’ families was warm and the relationship between the neighbours was harmonious. People lived and worked happily there.
Luckily, Jane, a middle school student, lived in the town. Her mother, Catherine, was a hardworking housewife, who was good at cooking all kinds of delicious food, especially cookies. Jane often followed her mother to give away good food to their neighbours.
Her nearest neighbour was John, an old man, whose farm was no more than a quarter mile down the road. John grew up in the town and preferred to live there, but his children moved to a large city. He had been busy with his career. He knew farming, hard work and his place among the other men of Glenfield, but anything else was unfamiliar and awkward to him.
John changed so much after his wife died. He stopped smiling, rarely went into town, never spoke to others, and had no patience for children. What’s more, his health was getting worse and worse.
When John became too old to farm, Catherine’s husband bought his land on which vegetables and trees were planted. Despite his retirement, John helped out on the farm all day. Unlike any other person who ever came to Catherine’s home, he never entered the house or sat at the table to share a meal.
Despite John’s stubbornness (固执), Catherine respected him and refused to let him go hungry after work. Helping him wouldn’t be easy, but Catherine always found a way of meeting his needs when she set her mind to something.
One day, John finished his task on the farm and returned to his house behind the farm.
After working in the kitchen for a while, Catherine called out to her daughter, “Jane, take these cookies to John.” Jane replied joyfully, “OK, Mum.” Then Jane packed them up and went to John’s house.

When Jane went into John’s home, she found John lying on the ground. Jane thought John was tired and asleep. She called him several times, but he still didn’t respond. She immediately performed CPR, which she learned in first aid class. When he was conscious, she laid him down in a comfortable position and ran to her parents. “Dad, Mum, John was ill!” Catherine and her husband stopped working and rushed to John’s home. They called 911 and sent John to the hospital on time. Thanks to the care of the family, John recovered.
From that day, John was kinder and more friendly to Jane’s family. He came to the farm early every morning to help but never asked for a penny. Catherine warmly invited him to dinner. He sat down to eat together at the table without hesitation, just like a member of the family. At weekends, when his children got home, he also invited Jane’s family to his house party. What a sweet picture! They exchanged kindness and felt comfortable and peaceful. That was just the living way in Glenfield.

Next to our house lived an old couple, who, accustomed to country life, were unwilling to move to the city to live with their son and stuck in a lonely existence for many years. It seemed that they didn’t feel like making any new connections with others, including their next-door neighbours.
The neighborhood kids nicknamed the strange old couple Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose. Rumor (流言) was that they sat inside and drank tea all day. The only words we ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes!” The rosebushes crawled along the fence. Or rather, they served as a fence between our house and theirs, overgrowing the support.
I was eleven at the time and the oldest of our family girls. A suitable playing court was a headache problem for us when we felt like playing softball games, which was our favourite sport then. We should have played our softball games elsewhere to avoid hurting the roses, but we secretly enjoyed annoying Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose.
One day, we had a softball game in our yard. Mary was trying to catch a fly ball. She stumbled (绊倒) over one of Ruby Rednose’s rosebushes and fell on top of several more. Just at that moment, Ruby Rednose sprang out and ran toward Mary. She screamed angrily, “Look at what you’ve done to our family’s roses! You’ve always been a trouble. You have no idea what this rosebush means to me!”
Hearing this, my sisters and I ran into our house. Breathlessly, we told Mom what had happened. “Girls, I have told you not to play softball near those bushes. Come outside right now and help me fix them.” “Mom, we thought you didn’t like the couple,” we protested. “They’re mean to us.” Mom just glared at us. We followed her outside to help repair the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged roses, Ruby slowly walked out. She looked sad. And it wasn’t her nose that was red, but her eyes.

Ruby walked over to my mother, with we girls holding our breath. We waited to see who would shout first and what terrible things would be said. “We are sorry about the flowers. The girls will fix them and help weed the roses.” said Mom. My sisters and I looked at each other in horror, but Ruby smiled through her tears. “I know we’re particular about these roses, but they’re very special because they remind me of my mother.” Soon both women were down on their knees examining the damaged bushes together.
A few weeks later, the plants all came back to life. My mother and Ruby worked together on the roses all summer and many summers to follow. So did my sisters and I. A friendship was formed between the families. Ruby became part of our family, spending many happy hours at our house, especially during countless birthdays, graduations and weddings. And the rose fence wasn’t a fence any longer. My mother had turned it into a bridge.

Fifty years ago, we saw a house in the South Farmingdale, North Massapequa area. The house is located on the ground floor. It is not only well lit, but also has a small garden. My husband and I fell in love with the house. The price was within our reach. Without hesitation we made our decision to buy it.
But there was one problem. It was a corner property. We both agreed there had to be a fence. So after moving in, my husband put up a fence and I painted it white.
How time flies! There have been many changes in our lives since that fence went up. My four children often enjoyed themselves in the garden. Our family had a happy family life in the garden. Now my four children have grown up and moved out. Most of the old neighbours have been replaced with new ones. It was last week that a young couple moved in next door to me. They have three children. Some of them go to school. Sometimes they play in the yard. When I saw their happy family, I felt as if I had gone through decades ago.
However, the fence remains, and at the moment, so do I. The fence has been repaired more often than I can remember. Most times a broken board or two was suddenly repaired. During the past ten years, it has been repainted professionally.
But more seriously, the white fence had turned green with mildew (霉菌). The boards were too old to paint. So this spring I had it rebuilt and repainted. I was satisfied with the rebuilt and repainted fence because it brought me back to my happy memory.
In a week, however, I was shocked to discover that a part of it was destroyed. A post (桩) was broken and some boards were left lying on the ground.

I don’t know who did this. Whatever the reason was, I decided to call the police and ask them to help me find out the truth. As I was taking a photo of the damage for a police report, a young man approached me. He introduced himself as the relatively new neighbor, and offered sympathy for the damage. He said he would help me as much as possible. I thought he was just talking and didn’t take it to heart.
The next evening as I ate my dinner, I heard a noise outside. When I walked into the yard, I realized the sounds came from my property. As I walked closer, I saw the neighbor I met yesterday repairing my fence. There were still warm-hearted people who loved our community and reached out to a stranger in my time of need. Sometimes, when the fence falls down, there is a bridge of communication. Suddenly, I felt there was a warm current in the cold early spring.

As the late afternoon sun beat down on his farm last May, Brandon Leseberg finished feeding his cows and decided to call it a day. As they often did, his two sons, Louie, 6, and Everett, 3 followed him. As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father who stopped to close the gate. Louie stopped at a water tap (水龙头) above an old well. Unknown to the Lesebergs, the board covering the well had, over time, grown brittle (易碎的). When Louie stepped on it, it caved in.
Brandon had just finished locking the gate when he turned around and saw only his youngest son. “Where’s Louie?” he shouted. “He fell in the hole!” Everett said. Brandon, 37, quickly realized what had happened. He ran to the well and heard Louie struggling. Without hesitation, he jumped in.
As he fell some 70 feet down the well Brandon heard Louie screaming. Somehow Brandon managed to grab onto a pipe that ran down the side of the well. He hit the cold water at the bottom of the well. He popped his head out of the water and grabbed Louie, who was panicking and trying to stay afloat (漂浮的) in the water. Brandon raised his son onto his chest as he put his own legs and back against the narrow walls for support. “All right, Dad, you can pull us out now,” Louie said.
If only it were that easy. There was no way he could climb out. The pipe that he’d grabbed during his fall was too slippery (滑的) to be of any use. There was only one way out. Looking up to see Everett looking down at them from the top of the well, Brandon shouted, “Everett, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and stand by the mailbox until someone stops. Tell them we need help.”

Everett did as he was told. About 15minutes later, Dan and Christi, nearby farmers, were driving by when they noticed Everett alone by the side of the road, waving. They pulled over and asked if he was OK. “My daddy’s in a hole” he told them. Hearing this, they piled Everett into their pickup and then drove to the well. “Brandon” Dan shouted, “It’s Dan. We’re going to send a rope down to you.” After several minutes they pulled Louie out of the well.
The neighbours now turned their attention to Brandon, but he was too heavy to pull out of the well using just the rope. After a brief discussion, they decided to use the old windmill that still stood over the well. Forty odd minutes after he’d jumped into the well to save his son, Brandon emerged, cold and wet. “You are our life saver.” Brandon thanked Dan, who turned to Everett. Dan said. “Everett is actually your life saver. Without him, I wouldn’t have known the accident, let alone the rescue!” Words couldn’t express his surprise when the father turned to the 3-year-old boy. Finally they thanked Dan again together.

A knock at the front door announced a visitor. Phil Radcliffe opened the door, looked down, and found a small boy of about 10, head down and face hidden, nose sniffing (抽鼻子), obviously in some unhappiness.
Phil and his wife Molly lived in this neighbourhood for almost three decades. The families here all knew and trusted one another. Youngsters bounced from home to home looking for friends and entertainment. In the school holidays, Molly and Phil had been known to take children at a time to the local cinema to give some of the parents a break.
Having taken him to the living room and had him seated, Phil asked the boy, “Philip, what’s happened?”
The boy seemed genuinely upset by the inquiry. “Sorry, Mr. Radcliffe,” he sobbed, “My dad’s just left home. He is not going to live with us any more. Mum’s crying. It’s made me cry. I don’t think I’m going to see him again.”
Phil sat down next to him and put a comforting arm around his shoulders, trying to reassure the youngster, “I’m sure that you’ll see your father again very soon Philip. You’re a lovely boy and he’ll want to see you a lot. And your teachers will understand if sometimes you’re a bit sad.”
The boy wiped away his tears with the back of a hand.
“Let me get something for us,” Phil suggested. He went into the kitchen, and then returned with an orange juice for the boy, a coffee for himself and a selection of biscuits for them. However upset he might have been, young Philip was obviously happy with the drink and concentrated on the chocolate samples among the biscuits.
Once the boy seemed more settled, Phil proposed, “Perhaps you should call your mum and tell her where you are, so that she doesn’t worry.”
“It’s OK, Mr. Radcliffe” he insisted. “I’ll go home in a few minutes. But I like talking to you.”
“You can stay as long as you want, Philip. I just don’t want your mother to think that she’s lost you.”

The response surprised and troubled Philip. He asked Phil if he would lose his mother one day. He was worried about she would die and he would be without her. Phil comforted him, “Philip, please don’t worry about your mother. She is still young and she’ll be with you. Of course, one day, she will die — but we all will die. When that happens, you will be a different person, an older person. It will be hard but you’ll manage it successfully — believe me.”
On the doorstep, young Philip looked up at his friendly neighbour. “Thank you very much, Mr Radcliffe. I feel a bit better now. Can I call again sometime?”“Of course,” Phil promised. “Come and talk whenever you like. Molly and I love seeing you and your friends.” The boy then said very quietly, “But you might be out. Or you might move away.” Phil cast a kind look at the boy, placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, and assured him, “Don’t worry. Whenever you want me, I’ll be there. Whatever happens, I promise you that I will be your friend as long as you trust me.”

2020年6月新课标卷(帮助社区的贫困家庭)

Man smile.

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
