Before I bought the bike in 2016, I resisted and reasoned. I was in my sixth decade and therefore too old to start something new and potentially dangerous. I couldn’t stop wondering: Would my body handle this new activity? Would I spend hundreds of dollars, only to have the thing sit in the parking lot, laughing at me every time I walked past, until eventually being cleared away? Would I be safe on the roads? And would it be any fun on my own, or just some childhood imaginings?
But then I read an interview with Cadel Evans — Australia’s only Tour de France winner — about his annual charity bike ride. He said his mother aged 65 still rode in the 65km race along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, and there was no turning back. I headed to the bike shop, with my husband coming along to be the voice of reason. Among various bikes, my preference went to a blue cruiser-style (巡航款)BMX, which felt right the first time I sat on it.
It didn’t fit in the back of the car, so I rode it home. With a fair amount of fear I quickly got on to a back street and was home in about 15 minutes, my heart pounding. I rode again the next day to meet a friend for coffee, a 15-minute ride each way. A few days later I rode for 40 minutes around a nearby lake, along a shared pathway.
When travelling around on my bike, I notice things that I never have before, like a dead bird on the side of the road. I haven’t joined a club, and haven’t purchased cycling clothes, but my weekly rides have become my rewarding moment in time when I feel like a kid again. It makes me feel carefree and strong. As I ride along the local wetland’s bike pathway, I’m smiling for no particular reason, almost like flying.
4. Why was the author worried about buying a bike?
A. Her child would laugh at her. B. It would be stuck on the road.
C. Her living costs would rise. D. It would be reduced to junk.
5. What made the author decide to buy a bike?
A. Inspiration from Evans’ mother. B. Her childhood dream.
C. Eagerness to join bicycle races. D. Her husband’s support.
6. What does the author imply in paragraph 3?
A. She purchased a light-weight bike. B. She finally chose a quiet pathway.
C. She invested more time in cycling. D. She felt like a child when cycling.
7 How did cycling benefit the author?
A. It taught her the nature of life. B. It fueled her love for workouts.
C. It broadened her social networks. D. It awakened her innocence and joy.
C
One day, while sitting in a busy Viennese restaurant in the 1920s, Russian psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik noticed that the waiters could successfully remember the details of the orders for the tables that had yet to receive and pay for their food. As soon as the food was delivered and the check was closed, however, the waiters’ memories of the orders seemed to disappear from their minds.
Zeigarnik conducted a series of experiments to study this phenomenon. She asked participants to complete a series of 18 to 22 simple tasks, including things like making a clay figure, constructing a puzzle, or completing a math problem. Half of the tasks were interrupted before the participants could complete them. Meanwhile, the participants were able to work on the others until they were done. Afterwards, the participants were asked to tell the experimenter about the tasks they worked on. An initial group of participants recalled interrupted tasks 90% better than the tasks they completed, and a second group of participants recalled interrupted tasks twice as well as completed tasks.
Other studies have failed to copy the Zeigarnik effect, and evidence demonstrates that there are a number of factors that impact the effect. This is something Zeigarnik accounted for in the discussion of her original research. She suggested that things like the timing of an interruption, the motivation to successfully complete a task, how tired an individual is, and how difficult they believe a task is, will all impact one’s recall of an unfinished task.
The Zeigarnik effect can also be useful for students who are studying for an exam. The effect tells us that breaking up study sessions can actually improve recall. So instead of studying intensely for an exam all in one sitting, breaks should be scheduled in which the student focuses on something else. This will automatically cause thoughts about the information that must be remembered, which will enable the student to review and consolidate (巩固) it, leading to better recall when they take the exam.
8. What phenomenon does the author describe in paragraph 1?
A. Customers delayed ordering food. B. Waiters had a bad instant memory.
C. Waiters memorized unfinished orders. D. Customers only focused on efficiency.
9. What can be inferred from Zeigarnik’s experiments?
A. Interrupted tasks were better remembered. B. Participants failed to finish simple tasks.
C. Participants thought tasks uneasy. D. Interrupted tasks were important.
10. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Hidden principles of Zeigarnik effect. B. Elements that affect Zeigarnik effect.
C. Tips that help improve memory. D. Impacts of sudden disturbance.
11. How can students apply the Zeigarnik effect?
A. By making use of leisure time. B. By intensifying targeted drills.
C. By keeping learning without cease. D. By valuing discontinuous learning.
D
Traffic jams in Japan not only contribute to greenhouse gas emissions (排放) but also cause economic losses annually. A group of Japanese researchers have developed a new spatiotemporal (时空的) artificial intelligence (AI) technology, known as QTNN, to predict the location and length of upcoming traffic jams.
QTNN first uses deep learning to predict the average speed and traffic volume at each intersection on the basis of jams and road network data for numerous roads. Next, it predicts the traffic jam length while correcting the traffic flow model used in traffic engineering. Through this two-step prediction method, the group achieved traffic jam prediction consistent with the knowledge from traffic engineering by using cutting-edge deep learning.
A test was performed using the data provided by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department to predict — one hour in advance — the length of traffic jams on 1,098 roads in Tokyo over two months. The company achieved a highly accurate prediction with an average error of less than 40m by accurately predicting instances of severe traffic jams as well as no traffic jams. The results indicate a 12.6% reduction in prediction error as compared to currently considered state-of-the-art deep learning methods.
Plus, QTNN was able to find that the number of incoming vehicles increases dramatically around 6:00 a. m., and the length of the jam soars significantly. Traffic volumes and average speeds decrease as jam peaks. However, owing to a certain amount of traffic on the nearby roads that started diverting (分流), this jam would continue until 10:00 a.m.
QTNN is being considered by the Metropolitan Police Department in its project to upgrade traffic control systems using AI and big data. They plan to conduct evaluation tests on some roads to prove the reliability of the technology in preparation for full operation in a real-world environment. Furthermore, the project aims to realize a spatiotemporal AI technology that will serve as a foundation for urban operation, flexibly employing information on signal control, road construction, and accident occurrence to predict traffic jam length.
12. What is the core idea behind QTNN?
A. Combining AI and traffic engineering. B. Adding indicators to the traffic model.
C. Relying on a data-driven prediction. D. Setting up a road network database.
13. What do we know about the prediction test?
A. It won government funding. B. It targeted the busiest roads.
C. It mirrored real traffic environment. D. It advocated observing traffic rules.
14. What does the underlined word “soars” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Declines. B. Varies. C. Interrupts. D. Grows.
15. What is the ultimate goal of the project that plans to use QTTN?
A. To make roads available. B. To keep cities habitable.
C. To help direct visitors. D. To reduce car crashes.

For years, scientists wonder whether plants can feel pain. A team of scientists from Tel Aviv University discovered some plants can produce a high-frequency pain sound in environmental stress. They tested tobacco plants and tomato plants by not watering them and by cutting off their stems (茎). ___16___
In both cases, the scientists found the plants began to produce sounds between 20 and 100 kHz. ___17___ When the stem of a tomato plant was cut, the researches found it produced 25 ultrasonic (超声的) pain sounds as reminders to other plants over the course of an hour.
The tobacco plants that had its stem cut sent out 15 pain sounds. When the team of scientists kept each plant from getting water, the tomato plants produced even more pain sounds, increasing to 35 in one hour, while the tobacco plants made 11. ___18___ They observed that the tobacco plants let out louder sound when they were not watered than when they had their stems cut.
___19___ It has been considered to be almost silent and not given much thought. The researchers used the data that they had gathered in a machine learning model to predict the different frequency of sound plants may produce in other cases like heavy rain or wind.
The team scientists believe listening to different types of sounds produced by plants could help with precision agriculture. ___20___ Last year, another study found that some plants registered pain after their leaves were touched, releasing smelly chemicals to avoid insects.
A. Studying plants’ sense of pain is easy yet costly.
B. Plants’ sound strength varies with types of stresses.
C. They then recorded their response with a microphone.
D. In this way, they could express the pain to nearby plants.
E. The results found plants struggled to avoid or reduce pain.
F. These findings can change how we view the plant kingdom.
G. Plus, it helps farmers discover any potential issue with crops.

Tracy’s fingers danced across the keyboard, with her eyes fixed on the screen. Her bedroom rang with the clatter (咔嗒声) of mouse clicks and the game’s explosive sound effects. It was noon, but she hadn’t noticed the sun climbing high in the sky — her world had narrowed to the digital battlefields of Starfall Legends.
“Just one more round,” she said to herself, ignoring her empty stomach. Since last term, the online game had become her escape. When chemistry formulas (方程式) turned into meaningless marks and math problems turned into unsolvable puzzles, logging into the game felt like breathing fresh air. Her grades had declined from A’s to C’s, but report cards and teacher warnings disappeared the moment she returned to the virtual world.
Today, the midterm exam schedule had slipped her mind entirely. Mrs. Henderson’s careful reminder about the chemistry test yesterday? Gone. The sticky note she’d stuck on her desk? Hidden beneath snack wrappers. As Tracy defeated three enemies, she jumped for joy.
Then she looked at the clock on the wall, 3:47 p. m. Her blood ran cold. Chemistry midterms started at 2:00 p. m. Tracy dropped the mouse, heart racing against her chests. She carried her backpack, rushing out of the house. The neighborhood flew past her — Mrs. Granger watering flowers, Mr. Higgins walking his dog — but she didn’t register any of it. Her mind replayed the past few hours: the first game at 10:00 a.m., the pizza she’d ordered during a break, and the excitement of leveling up.
By the time she reached the classroom, Mrs. Henderson was collecting papers. “I’m sorry,” Tracy apologized. “I forgot.” The teacher’s stare softened. “This isn’t just about forgetting an exam, is it?” Tracy shook her head, finally seeing the truth. The game hadn’t been an escape — it had been a prison, stealing her time, her focus, and her future. As she walked home, she made a promise: She would get rid of gaming addiction step by step.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
At night, Tracy decided to ask her mom to help in the early stages.

C 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据第二段“An initial group of participants recalled interrupted tasks 90% better than the tasks they completed, and a second group of participants recalled interrupted tasks twice as well as completed tasks.(结果显示,第一组参与者对被打断任务的记忆比已完成任务的记忆好90%;第二组参与者对被打断任务的记忆则是已完成任务的两倍)”可知,从Zeigarnik的实验中可以推断出被打断的任务更容易被记住。故选A。
根据第三段“She suggested that things like the timing of an interruption, the motivation to successfully complete a task, how tired an individual is, and how difficult they believe a task is, will all impact one’s recall of an unfinished task.(她指出,中断的时机、完成任务的动机、个体的疲劳程度,以及任务难度的主观认知,都会影响人们对未完成任务的记忆效果)”可知,第三段主要讲了影响Zeigarnik效应的元素。
根据最后一段“So instead of studying intensely for an exam all in one sitting, breaks should be scheduled in which the student focuses on something else. This will automatically cause thoughts about the information that must be remembered, which will enable the student to review and consolidate (巩固) it, leading to better recall when they take the exam.(因此,与其一次紧张地为考试而学习,不如安排休息时间,让学生专注于其他事情。这将自动引起对必须记住的信息的思考,这将使学生能够回顾和巩固它,从而在考试时更好地回忆)”可知,学生可以通过重视不连续学习来运用Zeigarnik效应。故选D。

A 13. C 14. D 15. B

根据上文“who accidentally travels back 2,000 years and”可知,句子时态为一般现在时,主语who指代先行词a teenager named Joey,谓语用第三人称单数形式,且与travels并列,故填arrives。
故填and。
根据时间状语“Since it was put on in Xi’an in 2021”可知,此处需用现在完成时,表示动作从过去持续到现在,主语为Sound of the Silk Road,助动词用has。故填has won。
region是可数名词,根据空后“across China, including Beijing and Chengdu”可知,此处指多个地区,需用复数形式 regions。故填regions。

The Warm-hearted Figure in My Heart
The warm-hearted figure in my heart is Ms. Wang, our English teacher. She’s always neatly dressed with a gentle smile, making her easy to approach.
What touches me most is her care for every student. Last month, I caught a bad cold and missed several classes. She stayed after school to explain the missed lessons to me patiently, even sharing her own cold medicine. When I felt down about my poor exam result, she encouraged me, saying, “Progress takes time—keep going!” Her kindness always gives me strength. She’s truly a warm-hearted angel around us.

Then, she looked at the clock on the wall, 3:47 p.

At night, Tracy decided to ask her mom to help in the early stages. She confessed her gaming addiction and its impact on her studies, tears welling up. Her mom hugged her tightly, saying, “Let’s tackle this together.” They agreed to set daily screen limits and store Tracy’s computer in the living room during study hours. Initially, Tracy felt restless without the game, but her mom encouraged her to replace gaming with jogging. Each time Tracy resisted the urge to play, her mom praised her effort, making her feel supported.
Over time, Tracy’s study and life had seen some improvements. She gradually reduced gaming time to weekends only, focusing on catching up in chemistry and math. Her concentration improved, and she joined a study group. By semester’s end, her grades rose from Cs to Bs. She even started reading novels, discovering a new passion. Though Starfall Legends still tempted her occasionally, Tracy now valued real-life achievements more. Her teacher’s approving smile during the final exam reminded her that freedom came not from escape, but from self-control.
