Junior Atreyee Ghosh, a biochemistry and psychology major, first knew about the Brain Exercise Initiative (BEI) from a friend. She had volunteered with seniors in Georgia since her freshman year and wanted to keep doing this work at the University of Rochester. So she started a BEI chapter in Rochester.
Alzheimer’s is a serious brain disease affecting 55 million people worldwide. BEI sends volunteers to help elderly people with Alzheimer’s do brain exercise packets. These packets have three parts: writing (with easy questions like “who’s on the dollar bill”), math (simple tasks), and reading (a short passage for discussion). Ghosh said volunteers don’t just help with exercises but also build relationships with the elderly.
The research behind BEI also had to be validated by Dr. O’Banion, a professor at URMC, before the chapter could be given government permission. The research showed that these exercises can help people with Alzheimer’s. After consistently completing the exercises, “their cognitive ability really improved,” Ghosh said. These exercises are used at more than 1,400 care homes.
Junior Ali Al Qazzaz, a microbiology major, joined BEI after reading its research. He’s a pre-medical student, interested in Alzheimer’s, and wants to study it while working with patients.
The chapter began recruiting volunteers in the spring of 2025. Before volunteering, members practiced with role-plays to handle problems. They also co-sponsored Family Science Day, playing memory games with kids.
On April 6, the executive board (E-Board) went to St. Ann’s Community for a trial. The BEI chapter is in conversation with Brookdale Senior Living and hopes to send volunteers there too. Their long-term goal is to get more UR students to help elders with Alzheimer’s. To know about volunteering, follow their Instagram: @rochester.bei.
4. What can we know about Atreyee Ghosh according to the first paragraph?
A. Her wish made her start the BEI chapter.
B. She began volunteering with seniors at UR.
C. She changed the major to psychology.
D. She was introduced to BEI by a professor of Georgia.
5. What can be inferred about the BEI’s approach?
A. It primarily focused on new medicines for Alzheimer’s.
B. It combines cognitive stimulation with social interaction.
C. Its complex mental exercises can improve cognitive ability.
D. It requires volunteers with a professional medical background.
6. What does the word “validated” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Criticized. B. Simplified. C. Invented. D. Confirmed.
7. What is the next plan of the BEI chapter?
A. It will end cooperation with St. Ann’s Community.
B. It may expand to Brookdale Senior Living.
C. It won’t recruit new volunteers in the future.
D. It will stop sponsoring Family Science Day.

Finding a Mojave Desert tortoise is getting harder in the American Southwest. These tortoises, with their domed patterned shells, live in California, parts of Nevada, Arizona and northwestern Mexico. However, they have lost habitat to development over decades. Disease and climate change also put them at risk, threatening their existence.
Estimates show that in four out of five main regions where the tortoises live, about 90% have disappeared since 1984. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife called them “threatened” in 1989, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) did the same a year later. This year, California took a further step, declaring them “endangered” under the state’s Endangered Species Act — meaning they may go extinct without proper management.
Krysten Kellum, a state agency spokesperson, said this status change could help get more funds for their protection. Yet, Kristina Drake, a former USFWS official, said federal support faces challenges — the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lost many workers, and its budget may be cut, and more federal money isn’t expected for the tortoises, which have lived in the desert for at least 15 million years.
Luckily, nonprofits like the Mojave Desert Land Trust still work to protect the tortoises and their habitat. Finding tortoises is hard because they spend most of their time underground in burrows (洞穴) to escape heat and predators like mountain lions. Scientists say the tortoises’ decline is “death from a thousand cuts” — caused by vehicle collisions, habitat loss, climate change, and more. Climate change makes temperatures higher and droughts longer. A study during California’s 2012-2016 drought found fewer female tortoises, as laying eggs uses much water and protein, which is worse in droughts.
Tortoises are important “ecosystem engineers”. They dig 7 to 17 burrows yearly, and abandoned ones become homes for other animals. Losing them would harm the whole ecosystem. Though seeing two tortoises in a day is rare and special now, nonprofits will keep fighting to protect them.
8. Why are the Mojave Desert tortoises harder to spot?
A. Because they have migrated to completely new regions.
B. Because their population has declined significantly.
C. Because their patterned shells provide perfect shelters.
D. Because they are hiding from human beings.
9. What do Kristina Drake’s words show about federal support?
A. It increases because of public demand. B. It will raise more federal money.
C It focused on other species instead. D. It is limited due to staff and budget issues.
10. What can be the cause of the Mojave Desert tortoise’s decline?
A. It is the result of a complex combination of factors.
B. It is primarily due to a single and identifiable threat.
C. It is mainly caused by a lack of public awareness.
D. It is directly linked to a specific disease outbreak.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The living habits of Mojave Desert tortoises.
B. The reasons for declaring tortoises endangered.
C. The efforts to protect Mojave Desert tortoises.
D. The impact of climate change on tortoises.

Saturn, the ringed planet, now boasts 274 moons after 128 new ones were officially recognized, nearly doubling its previous total of 146.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU), the global authority on such classifications, confirmed the discovery on March 11, though the moons were first detected in 2023 by a team of astronomers from China, Canada, the U.S., and France using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii.
Most of these newly confirmed moons are irregular and tiny, just a few miles across. By contrast, our moon has a diameter of 2,159 miles (3,475 kilometers). But they do have proven orbits around Saturn, which is a key element of official moon qualification. Dr. Brett Gladman, professor at the University of British Columbia, explained in a statement: “These moons are a few kilometers in size and are likely all fragments of a smaller number of originally captured moons that were broken apart by violent collisions, either with other Saturnian moons or with passing comets.”
This discovery marks another milestone for the team, which previously added 62 moons to Saturn’s count between 2019 and 2021 using the same CFHT. Lead researcher Dr. Edward Ashton, a postdoctoral fellow at Academia Sinica’s Institute, noted their strategy: “With the knowledge that more moons were likely to exist, we revisited the same sky fields for three consecutive (连续的) months in 2023 — and found 128 new ones.”
The observation of Saturn's moons has a rich history: Titan, its first known moon, was discovered in 1655 by Christiaan Huygens, followed by four more discovered by Jean-Dominique Cassini in the following decades. William Herschel spotted Mimas and Enceladus in 1789. Over the subsequent 200 years, technological improvements — including the invention of photography, the development of massive telescopes, and the launch of space probes like the Voyager 1, Voyager 2 and Cassini — allowed us to see even more of Saturn's moons.
Yet, Ashton cautions that current technology may have reached its limit: “We can’t do much better than what’s been done for moons around Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune with existing technology.” For now, Saturn reigns with 274 known moons, far outpacing Jupiter’s 95.
12. What is the core criterion for becoming a Saturnian moon?
A. A diameter larger than a few miles. B. A confirmed orbit around Saturn.
C. Discovery by the international team. D. Origin from collisions with comets.
13. What does Dr. Brett Gladman suggest about the new moons?
A. They orbit Saturn in a regular pattern.
B. They were first detected by the CFHT in 2019.
C. They are larger than most previously known Saturnian moons.
D. They were formed from broken fragments of older moons.
14. According to Ashton, how is the future of moon discovery?
A. The number of known moons will double to 274.
B. More moons will be found with the current telescopes.
C. New discoveries will depend entirely on space probes.
D. Technological advancements may lead to new discoveries.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A To compare the number of moons between Saturn and Jupiter.
B. To explain the process of Saturn’s moons’ formation.
C. To report the discovery of 128 new moons around Saturn.
D. To argue for the need of more advanced technology.

Start small.
____20____ Ease in to figure out if it’s right for you, advises Rebecca Weiler, a mental health counselor. “You can always do more later,” she says. In August 2008, Brad, 27, returned to Duncan Falls, Ohio, his hometown, to participate in his sister's wedding. His grandma, Joy, 78, also showed up. But Brad had not seen or spoken to Joy in six years because she had broken his heart due to family conflicts.
Brad saw his grandmother walk unsteadily into the Duncan Falls church. She had not been well and was barely able to stand. Brad slowly walked over to her and helped her to her seat. The two didn't say much, just a few pleasant words. No hug or smile to show they were close.
Brad's earliest memory of Joy was at the age of 3. They walked to Blue Rock State Park. Grandma Joy helped him lift rocks in the creek (小溪) to find crawfish (龙虾) . They held them in hands and talked about how beautiful it was being in nature. As he grew older, Grandma Joy was the one person in his world he could count on. But their close relationship was no longer as close as it used to be.
Six months after the wedding, Brad hiked parts of the Appalachian Trail. His thoughts were his only companion, and he found himself thinking a lot about his grandmother and the time they spent at Blue Rock State Park looking for crawfish. It puzzled him why that memory in particular stayed with him.
After hiking, Brad decided to visit Grandma Joy because he thought it would be a lifelong regret if he didn't contact his grandma. He called her and Joy invited him over. It would be their first real conversation in six years. Brad found that she looked good and her health improved. To break the silence, Brad shared his hiking experience. Grandma Joy admired and said one of her regrets was that she'd never had the chance to see more of nature.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Brad asked if she wanted to go to Blue Rock State Park.

C. It focused on other species instead.
A The living habits of Mojave Desert tortoises.
B. The reasons for declaring tortoises endangered.
C. The efforts to protect Mojave Desert tortoises.
D. The impact of climate change on tortoises.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. C

Most of these newly confirmed moons are irregular and tiny just a few miles across.
C They are larger than most previously known Saturnian moons.
A. To compare the number of moons between Saturn and Jupiter.
B. To explain the process of Saturn’s moons’ formation.
C. To report the discovery of 128 new moons around Saturn.
D. To argue for the need of more advanced technology.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. C

【答案】Dear Henry,
I’m glad to receive your email asking about the “Chinese & Foreign Traditional Sports Experience Area.”
We had various fun activities there. You could try Chinese ones like shuttlecock kicking and paper cutting for window decorations, plus foreign ones such as Scottish highland dancing. Lots of foreign exchange students joined in the activities. They loved shuttlecock kicking most — even though it was tricky at first, they laughed a lot while practicing.
This area mattered a lot. It let us share sports cultures and helped everyone make more friends. Hope you can join us if you visit someday!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】
Brad asked if she wanted to go to Blue Rock State Park. Joy’s eyes lit up immediately, and she nodded eagerly. The next day, they set off for the park. As they walked along the creek, memories flooded back. Joy helped Brad lift rocks, just like old times, and they laughed and talked, sharing stories from the past. The beauty of nature and the warmth of their reunion made the day unforgettable.
After this trip, they continued their journey to different national parks. They explored mountains, forests, and lakes, creating new memories together. Brad realized that family conflicts were insignificant compared to the love and connection they shared. Joy, too, felt grateful for the chance to reconnect with her grandson. Their bond grew stronger with each adventure, proving that love and forgiveness can heal even the deepest wounds.
