Do Dolphins Have a Language?
We know that dolphins make unique sounds, but is that a language? If you’re interested in it, you are welcome to the activity recommended by Denise Herzing!
About Denise Herzing
Denise Herzing of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is the organiser and research director of the Wild Dolphin Project, which has a goal of understanding dolphins’ social system, behaviour, and communication. For over thirty years, she has spent each summer watching Atlantic dolphins carefully in the Bahamas.
Activity Guide:
Purpose:
Dolphins use sound to communicate, but they can’t make sounds in the way we humans make. Out of the water dolphins can make different sounds by changing the shape of their blowhole (呼吸孔), which is similar to changing the shape of our own mouths. Underwater, though, they use a totally different system, and they make sounds without letting any air out. You can learn more about how that works here. In this activity we’re going to try to talk like a dolphin.
Materials:
Nothing! But find a partner, maybe a brother or sister or a parent — or if you have one, a dog or cat. After all, this activity is about communication between humans and animals.
How To Do It:
Take a deep breath, hold your nose to keep it shut, and try to communicate with your partner. If your partner is a pet, try saying its name or asking it to “come here”.
When you’re done, think about what made it hard, what solutions you found, and think why dolphins may have developed to communicate in this way.
Then listen to sounds from all kinds of sea animals and compare your dolphin sound to theirs.
1. What can we learn about Denise Herzing?
A. She holds the activity in FAU.
B. She is an expert in dolphins.
C. She wants to find a partner for her research.
D. She fell in love with dolphins when young.
2. What would you have to do for the activity?
A. Have a pet next to you. B. Keep breathing deeply.
C. Talk with your nose closed. D. Compare dolphins with other animals.
3. Where can the text be found?
A. In a diary. B. In a report.
C. In a travel brochure. D. In an activity book

Teenagers have their own TV channels, websites and magazines. So what about books?
Last year one publisher, Martins, started publishing a series called Waves. We spoke to the director Julia Smith. She explained, "Teenage fiction has been published since the 1970s but publishers have never been very successful in getting teenagers to buy and read books. Now they're realizing that teenagers are just older children, but are not adults either. They are often not interested in adult fiction. For this series we are looking for new writers who write especially for teenagers.
Athene Gorr's novel was published in the series last year and is selling well. Its title is The Purple Ring. She says, "The important thing is to encourage teenagers to pick up your book. I'm a new writer. Although I've got an unusual name which people might remember, nobody knows it yet! But my book has a fantastic cover which makes people want to look inside. Then they realize what an excellent story it is!"
And what do teenagers themselves think about the series? We talked to Sophie Clarke, aged 15. She said? "I've read a few books in the Waves series. They say they are for 14-19 year olds and I agree with that. We're not interested in the same things as people in their twenties and thirties. I like them and I think they look really good too. The only thing is that because bookshops put them in the children section, lots of teenagers won't find them so they may not do very well. And it's a shame there's no such series as I think lots of teenagers, especially boys, might buy."
4. What can we infer from Paragraph 2? ______

B. They are about real facts.
C. They are popular with teenage boys.

7. What does the author intend to do with the passage? ______
A. To compare different series of teenage fiction.
B. To give information about a new series of books.
C. To encourage more writers to create fictions for teenagers.
D. To explain why teenage fiction is easier to write than adult fiction.

Sun Rui, a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation. She had looked for an out-of-school English course, but in the end, she changed it to a swimming training class. “It is because of the strict rules on subject-tutoring classes out of schools, many parents like me choose sports or other classes for developing interests instead,” Sun said.
Sun’s choice is part of the result of the government’s growing efforts to reduce the academic pressure on young students.
On July 24, Chinese government introduced the rules in order to reduce the burden of homework and after-class tutoring for primary and junior high school students. It lists requirements in areas such as reducing the amount and the difficulty of homework and after-class services provided by schools. For example, homework for primary children below the third grade is not allowed, while homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish. Out-of-school classes cannot teach students knowledge that is ahead of the school curriculum. No subject lessons can be given on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.
According to Global Times, more than 75 percent of Chinese children in cities, from grade l to grade 12, take part in out-of-school subject classes. This has led to many social problems such as students’ falling levels of physical fitness, more mental health problems and huge family costs, said Chu Zhaohui, senior researcher with the National Institute of Education Sciences.
Many parents showed their support for the new moves. “Subject leaning is enough at school and we hope the children’s life can be more relaxing during holidays”, a parent in Guangzhou told Xinhua. However, there are also some parents who have new fears. A parent in Shanxi said that although she agreed with the new rules, she was worried that both she and her husband had no time to be with her son
8. The reason why Sun Rui let her son sign up for a swimming class instead of an English course is that ______.
A. many parents chose classes for developing interests
B. the government made rules on out-of-school subject classes.
C. the government made an effort to advocate subject-tutoring classes.
D. she wanted to reduce the academic pressure on her son.
9. According to the rules introduced on July 24, ______.
A. primary students in grade one and grade two have no homework after school.
B. junior high school students should do their homework for more than 90 minutes.
C. out-of-school classes can’t teach any knowledge in school textbooks.
D. during summer vacations, junior students can have subject classes outside schools.
10. In Chu Zhao’s opinion, taking part in out-of-school subject classes can ______.
A. help children stay fit.
B. have a positive effect on children’s mental health.
C. increase some families’ extra spending.
D. help children lean better at school.
11. What are parents’ reaction to the new rules?
A. Some parents feel anxious about their children’s study at school.
B. They want their children to take part in more out-of-school classes.
C. They all think it is hard for them to accept the rules right now.
D. Some parents worry that they have no time to keep their children company after school.

It is quite clear to me, based on my research, that tropical (热带的) insects rather than polar bears could be among the first species to become extinct as a result of global warming.
Insects in the tropics are already living at the limit of their temperature range and any further increases could quickly kill them off. This would be a major disaster for tropical habitats, which rely on insects for everything from pollination (授粉) to waste disposal (处理). We have found that a rise in average temperatures in the tropics of just 1℃ or 2℃ could be enough to bring about a significant and harmful effect on the survival of a wide variety of important insects. Fitness levels most likely decline quickly and there may not be much we can do about it.
Many tropical species can only accept a narrow range of temperatures because the climate they experience is pretty steady throughout the year. Now our study shows that they will be harmed by rising temperatures more than species in cold climates. Unfortunately, the tropics also hold the large majority of species on the planet.
We used daily and monthly global temperatures from the 50-year period between 1950 and 2000 and compared them against data showing the “fitness levels” of different species. “Fitness” was determined by indicators such as population growth rates and physical performance for different creatures.
We found that even moving into the shade did not help the insects. The direct effects of climate change on the organisms (生物体) we studied appear to depend a lot more on the organisms’ flexibility than on the amount of warming in the area where they lived.
As well as the danger for insects, the research confirms that there will be other consequences of global warming that could also have a serious impact on tropical regions, particularly on food crops. Our research focused only on the impact of changes in temperature, but warming also will change rainfall patterns. These changes could be more important for many tropical organisms, such as plants, but they are harder to predict.
12. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Global warming. B. Living in the tropics.
C. Killing polar bears off. D. Insects becoming extinct.
13. Why are tropical species more likely harmed by climate change?
A. The fitness of crops they feed on is declining.
B. They can hardly stand up to temperature changes.
C. Their living environment has been greatly damaged.
D. The amount of warming is not steady in the tropics.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The significance of the research.
B. The challenge facing the researchers.
C. Predictions about the impacts of global warming.
D. Suggestions on how to preserve tropical regions.
15. What is the main purpose of this text?
A. To solve a problem. B. To give practical advice.
C. To report a coming event. D. To present a research result.
D 13. B 14. C 15. D
由第二段中的“Insects in the tropics are already living at the limit of their temperature range and any further increases could quickly kill them off. This would be a major disaster for tropical habitats, which rely on insects for everything from pollination (授粉) to waste disposal (处理). (热带地区的昆虫已经生活在其温度范围的极限,任何进一步的温度升高都可能很快杀死它们。This将是热带栖息地的一场重大灾难,从授粉到废物处理,热带栖息地的一切都依赖昆虫)”可知,热带栖息地的维护有赖于热带昆虫,可得出热带昆虫的灭绝是热带栖息地的一场重大灾难,This指代“Insects becoming extinct (热带昆虫灭绝)”。故选D项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。由第二段中的“We have found that a rise in average temperatures in the tropics of just 1℃ or 2℃ could be enough to bring about a significant and harmful effect on the survival of a wide variety of important insects. (我们发现,热带地区平均气温仅上升1℃或2℃就足以对多种重要昆虫的生存产生重大而有害的影响)”和第三段中的“Many tropical species can only accept a narrow range of temperatures because the climate they experience is pretty steady throughout the year. (许多热带物种只能接受很窄的温度范围,因为它们经历的气候全年都相当稳定)”可知,许多热带物种只能接受很窄的温度范围,温度仅上升1℃或2℃就可能带来巨大灾难,说明热带物种几乎经不起温度的变化。故选B项。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。由最后一段“As well as the danger for insects, the research confirms that there will be other consequences of global warming that could also have a serious impact on tropical regions, particularly on food crops. Our research focused only on the impact of changes in temperature, but warming also will change rainfall patterns. These changes could be more important for many tropical organisms, such as plants, but they are harder to predict.
由第一段中的“It is quite clear to me, based on my research, that tropical (热带的) insects rather than polar bears could be among the first species to become extinct as a result of global warming. (根据我的研究,我很清楚,由于全球变暖,热带昆虫而不是北极熊可能是首批灭绝的物种)”,第二段中的“We have found that a rise in average temperatures in the tropics of just 1℃ or 2℃ could be enough to bring about a significant and harmful effect on the survival of a wide variety of important insects. (我们发现,热带地区平均气温仅上升1℃或2℃就足以对多种重要昆虫的生存产生重大而有害的影响)”,第三段中的“Now our study shows that they will be harmed by rising temperatures more than species in cold climates. (现在,我们的研究表明,与寒冷气候下的物种相比,气温上升对它们的危害更大)”,第四段中的“We used daily and monthly global temperatures from the 50-year period between 1950 and 2000 and compared them against data showing the “fitness levels” of different species. (我们使用了1950年至2000年50年期间的每日和每月全球温度,并将其与显示不同物种“健康水平”的数据进行了比较)”,第五段中的“We found that even moving into the shade did not help the insects. (我们发现,即使移入阴凉处也无助于昆虫)”和最后一段中的“As well as the danger for insects, the research confirms that there will be other consequences of global warming that could also have a serious impact on tropical regions, particularly on food crops. (这项研究证实,除了对昆虫的危险外,全球变暖还会带来其他后果,也可能对热带地区,尤其是粮食作物产生严重影响)”可知,文章介绍了全球变暖对热带昆虫影响的研究结果(即热带昆虫灭绝),本文在展示研究结果。故选D项。

G. Your dorm room isn’t just where you sleep or study.
C 17. G 18. F 19. E 20. B
I talked with a lot of students who had trouble living in a dorm room. Here are some survival tips I want to share.(下面是一些我想和大家分享的一些生存技巧)符合语境,能很好地承上启下,故选C。
根据语境It’s your HOME. Your dorm room isn’t just where you sleep or study.
Cleanliness is important whether you share a room with one person or seven. _3_ Thus, your room will be always clean. Make a schedule that can be followed by everyone.
Try healthy snacks such as fruit and yogurt. __4__And remember the Freshman 15 doesn’t apply only to freshman. 根据后文的the Freshman 15 doesn’t apply only to freshman. But watch out for Freshman 15—gaining 15 pounds!
The key to getting along well with others is communication. Don’t shout. Talk it out!(不要喊叫,说出来!)
Cleanliness is important whether you share a room with one person or seven. ___3___Thus, your room will be always clean. Make a schedule that can be followed by everyone.

Sun Rui a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation.
D
We found that even moving into the shade did not help the insects The direct effects of climate change on the organisms (生物体) we studied appear to depend a lot more on the organisms’ flexibility than on the amount of warming in the area where they lived.
