One day, Jenny was taking her first art class at school. The
art teacher, Mrs Minton, told the children to draw the flowers in
the front of the class.
“Don't worry if your picture doesn't look exactly like the
picture by the person next to you,” she said. “The important thing
is to draw what you see.”
Jenny worked very hard. She spent so long drawing that her
hand began to hurt (疼痛). She put the brush down for a
moment and looked at the picture next to hers.
17
“That's really good,” she said to Carrie. Carrie's picture was
small and nice. Every flower was just like the real flowers in the
front of the class.
“Thanks,” said Carrie. She looked at Jenny's picture. “Oh!
What happened to yours?”
“What do you mean?” asked Jenny. She looked at her own
picture. It was very different from Carrie's. It covered the whole
page and the colours were brighter than the real flowers.
“What a picture!” said Carrie. “Did you pour the paints?”
“No,” said Jenny in a low voice. “I drew what I saw, just like
Mrs Minton said.”
“It's OK, you know,” said Carrie. “Not everyone is good at
art.”
Mrs Minton heard what Carrie said and came over to look at
Jenny's work.
“Oh my!” said Mrs Minton. “I think it's wonderful, Jenny. It's
so full of colours. It shows a feeling of happiness.”
Jenny was very▲. “But Mrs Minton, it doesn't look anything
like the flowers you told us to draw,” Carrie said.
“Maybe not to you, Carrie. Everyone sees different things when
they look at the world.” She showed them a picture in a book.
“This is a picture an artist drew of his own face. This is how he
saw himself.”
“But … but … it's just a few lines,” said Carrie. “It doesn't
look anything like a real person.”
Mrs Minton turned to Jenny, “You should read this book,
Jenny. There are a lot of different kinds of pictures from famous
artists. Some of the pictures are very strange, but they show the
way the artists look at the world.”
That evening, Jenny said to her mother, “I'm going to be an
artist when I grow up.”

Plants need to eat just like animals do. However, unlike animals,
plants cannot move around to find food. Instead, they have
developed special ways to get “food” from things around them.
One of the main ways plants eat is through photosynthesis.
This process uses sunlight, water and CO to create glucose, which
is a kind of sugar that plants use for energy. Chlorophyll (叶绿素)
is responsible (负责) for catching sunlight and turning it into
energy. Trees are some of the largest and longest-lived
26
photosynthetic plants on the earth. They play an important role in
keeping the earth's climate in balance by taking in CO from the
air and giving off O .
Another way for plants to eat is through their roots (根).
Roots take in water and other things from the ground, which are
then sent to the rest of the plant. This process is important for the
growth and development of plants, as it gives them the nutrients
(营养物) they need to live. For example, some plants are able to
live in dry environments. Their roots are used to absorb water from
the ground, and they have thick leaves to store water.
Carnivorous (食肉的) plants are a great example of how
plants get their food. Some plants eat insects and other small
animals. These plants have special leaves that catch their food. For
example, the pitcher plant is a kind of carnivorous plant. Its leaves
are in a special shape with a smooth surface (光滑的表面) that
makes it difficult for insects to climb out once they have fallen in.
