Should We Make Animals Our Pets?
Should we make animals our pets? Different people may have different opinions.
I think it’s good to keep animals as pets. First, pets like cats or dogs can be our good friends. When we feel lonely, they stay with us and make us happy. Second, taking care of pets teaches us responsibility—we need to feed them and clean their houses on time. But we must treat pets kindly, not just play with them when we want. If we can love and care for them, living with pets will make our life more colorful.

The world is getting smaller, at least when it comes to language. More and more people speak the three most common languages: English, Spanish, and Mandarin. 45 , local languages are being forgotten. In many parts of the world, grandparents speak a language their grandchildren do not understand. As cultures adjust to these changes, and languages aren’t taught to children or spoken at home, these local languages are slowly disappearing.
A language is said to be in trouble when less than 30 percent of children in the community speak it. It is considered a 46 language. If children no longer learn to use a language, it will have fewer and fewer speakers over time and, in the end, the language will be gone.
47 should we keep languages alive? Languages hold the key to understanding a culture’s beliefs and values. They show how a culture understands or explains the world. “You need to look at a variety of languages, because no one language gets it all,” said anthropologist (人类学家) Dr. Linda Cumberland who is working to 48 Assiniboine, a Native American language.
According to Dr. Cumberland, a language in trouble needs not only a 49 but also people who understand and record its grammar. Most importantly, you need to listen to those who still speak the language. This can be very difficult, especially if there are very few speakers of the language left. For example, when researchers were working to save the language Ayange C yapaneco in Mexico, it was hard for them to record anything because the last two people on Earth who could speak the language 50 to speak to each other!
45.A.For example B.As a result C.By the way D.In addition
46.A.dying B.strange C.silent D.foreign
47.A.How B.When C.Why D.Where
48.A.learn B.find C.use D.save
49.A.library B.dictionary C.notebook D.telephone
50.A.forgot B.chose C.refused D.continued
C. Fill in the blanks with proper words
The Power of Memory
Memory, the ability that enables the retention of past experiences, is essentially connected to the process of learning. One needs memory for skills like riding a bicycle. A dog needs it to respond to commands. Memory is said to be s 51 in the brain as a “memory trace.” What makes up this trace is not known. Some scientists believe that certain chemical substances may carry certain memories. For example, one substance, when given to rats, causes them to fear the darkness.
Other research into memory has to do with how the brain works. Psychologists use three means to find out how a person remembers. For example, give a person a grocery list. Let the person m 52 the list, then put it away. The most natural way to find out how much a person remembers of the grocery list is to ask w 53 he or she remembers. This is called the method of recall. Another technique is recognition. The individual is presented with a different list and tasked with identifying items from the original list that appear only on the second list. Interestingly, individuals often find it easier to recognize rather than recall items. At 54 method of finding how much a person remembers is called relearning. Here the person is asked to read over the first list. The person will probably learn the list the second time f 55 than he did the first time. The difference in the time it takes to relearn the list is thought of as a measure of how much a person has remembered.
Repetition is a common strategy for committing information to memory, yet i 56 plays an important role. Boring lists of facts are much more difficult to remember than something that we understand and are interested in. Motivation, the drive to accomplish a task, is equally significant. Motivation is l 57 with the prospect of reward. For example, a hungry animal quickly learns how to do something if that action gets the animal food. In humans, wanting to learn is often motivation with the approval of a teacher or the affirmation of a correct response serving as a reward.
D. Answer the questions
Electives (选修课) are always popular with students because they offer the chance to learn something exciting, and they’re a welcome break from regular courses like maths and physics. Here are just a few of the exciting electives lucky teenagers can take in some of China’s middle schools.
Self-defense skillsA school from Chongqing
The school offers a self-defense course—just for girls. Those who attend the lessons have the chance to study basic self-protection skills in a one-on-one practice. They learn how to get away when they need to and defend themselves against attacks. “I feel safer in myself now,” said Zhang Yi, 15, a girl student.
PotteryA school from Tianjin
The famous pottery scene in a movie called Ghost is a lasting memory for many movie-goers. Young artists at the school love to get their hands dirty creating beautiful pieces. Students learn how to design various clay projects. At the end they have the skills to make their own bowls, cups, vases and pots.
Horse ridingA school from Beijing
Equestrians (马术) can look pretty cool, can’t they? Teenagers at this school can now choose a course in riding skills. They’re taught to communicate with their horses and how to use reins. To ride a horse in the proper way, a student must hold the head forward and keep his back straight. Students come away from this elective not only knowing how to ride a horse gracefully, but also physically fitter!
Couplets (对联)A school from Nanjing
How many of you can write a couplet? This old literary (文学的) form is slowly disappearing, but Chinese culture lovers at the school are trying to make it alive. For their elective, teenagers study old couplets and try to rhyme (押韵) their own lines. Many of this year’s students can’t wait for the Spring Festival, when they’ll be able to show off their new skills.
58.Maths and physics are electives in middle schools of China, aren’t they?
59.How many electives in Chinese middle schools are introduced in the article?
60.Why do girl students attend the self-defense course?
61.What skills can students be expected to learn in the elective “Pottery”?
62.What are the common advantages of “Self-defense skills” and “horse riding”?
Both of the electives make students .
63.Who will the elective “Couplets” probably attract? Why?

51.(s)tored 52.(m)emorize 53.(w)hat 54.third 55.(f)aster 56.(i)t 57.(l)inked
根据“in the brain as a ‘memory trace.’”
根据“The most natural way to find out how much a person remembers of the grocery list”可知说的是记住清单内容,且根据首字母m可知,memorize“记住”符合语境,let sb. do sth.“让某人做某事”,固定搭配,此处应用动词原形。故填(m)emorize。
根据“This is called the method of recall”和“Another technique is recognition.”
故填(i)t。
be linked with…“与……相连”,固定搭配,所以,“linked连接”符合题意,指动机与对回报的期望联系在一起。故填(l)inked。

Should We Make Animals Our Pets?
Should we make animals our pets? Different people may have different opinions.
I think it’s good to keep animals as pets. First, pets like cats or dogs can be our good friends. When we feel lonely, they stay with us and make us happy. Second, taking care of pets teaches us responsibility—we need to feed them and clean their houses on time. But we must treat pets kindly, not just play with them when we want.
