The Frog at the Bottom of the Well (井底之蛙) There was a shabby shallow well at the east end of a village. A frog lived in this well—he had lived there for a very long time. Even though the water at the bottom was shallow and smelly, and he could only see a small patch of sky (as big as the well’s mouth) when he looked up every day, the frog still loved his life here. One day, a big soft-shelled turtle from the East Sea passed by the shallow well. He saw the frog sunbathing comfortably at the bottom of the well and greeted him: “Little Frog Brother, this well is so small. Do you live here happily?” The frog looked up at the big turtle, and said proudly and contentedly: “It’s great here! Look how happy I am! Sometimes I jump up to the railing outside the well to play; sometimes I hide in the holes on the well wall to rest. When I soak in the water, the water floats around my armpits and supports my cheeks—it’s soft and comfortable. When I step in the mud, the mud covers my feet and hides my insteps. If I look back at those mosquito larvae, crabs, and tadpoles—none of them live as leisurely as I do! Besides, I have this whole pool of water to myself. I can jump freely in it. This joy is hard to describe. Why don’t you come in and feel it too?” The big turtle from the East Sea was tempted by the frog’s vivid and wonderful description. He was ready to go down into the well. But the well’s mouth was too small—before his left leg could get in, his right leg got stuck on the edge of the well. “Your home is too small, Little Frog Brother. I’d better not go down!” the turtle said as he pulled his left leg back. The frog was a little unhappy—the turtle actually thought his home was too small! So he asked in a provocative tone: “Big Turtle Brother, then tell me—where do you live? What’s life like there?” The big turtle didn’t notice the frog’s unfriendliness. He answered seriously: “I live in the vast East Sea. How big is the East Sea? Even a distance of a thousand li isn’t enough to describe how wide it is. How deep is it? Even a height of a thousand zhang (an ancient unit of length) isn’t enough to measure how deep it is. Every day, we swim in the boundless sea, with the endless sky above our heads. It’s so free and happy—we really enjoy it!” The frog stopped talking. It seemed to be thinking about something. When talking about his home, the big turtle had more to say. He continued: “Legend says that during the time of Yu the Great (a legendary ruler), there were floods nine out of ten years, but the sea water never increased. During the time of King Tang (another ancient ruler), there were droughts seven out of eight years, but the sea water never decreased. The sea water of the East Sea doesn’t change its volume because of time, and doesn’t increase or decrease because of floods or droughts. That’s the greatest happiness of living in the East Sea!” After introducing the East Sea, the big turtle was still lost in beautiful memories—he loved his home so much too! But the frog? He had already been stunned by what he heard. How could he have seen such a vast sea? He had always thought the sky was only as big as the well’s mouth. The water in his well sometimes existed and sometimes dried up, but he still felt proud and talked big about it. In comparison, he realized he was so small and unimportant. The frog at the bottom of the well thought and thought, and felt more and more ashamed. He couldn’t help but lower his head. Moral The frog at the bottom of the shallow well had never seen the world outside the well. He always thought the sky was only as big as the well’s mouth, and the small井底 (bottom of the well, as big as a foot square) was his whole life. But after hearing about the sea, he realized how shallow he was and how narrow his knowledge was. This story tells us that when understanding things and learning knowledge, we must contact, recognize, and understand them from all aspects. We must never take one part as the whole just because we see a little bit. This kind of attitude will only make us like the frog at the bottom of the well—satisfied with the status quo, ignorant and unlearned. In the end, we will only know one side of things, not the whole picture.
