Passage 5
As the sun sets and the city is enveloped in the peaceful cover of night, a new trend (趋势) is rising quietly across China: the 24-hour library. In addition to staying open 24 hours a day, and featuring a wide variety of books, these libraries are equipped with comprehensive study facilities, including water, electricity, power outlets and restrooms. Some even offer soft drink services and dining options.
For Ye, a 25-year-old from Weihai, East China’s Shandong Province, the local 24-hour library is an invaluable resource as she is preparing for the civil service exam. Hired full-time, she finds that traditional library hours do not meet her study needs. “The traditional local libraries usually open at 9 a. m. and close at 10 p. m., which isn’t convenient for working people like me. I can only devote myself to studying early in the morning or late at night,” Ye said.
Similarly, Ma, a 20-year-old sophomore from East China’s Anhui Province, often visits a 24-hour library in Huai’an. During long holidays such as the summer and winter vacations, she goes there almost every day, staying for up to nine hours each time to study subjects like computer science, English, and law, according to Ma. “This library is very quiet as many people are studying. It motivates me,” Ma noted, although she admitted that occasional noise can be a distraction.
A social media user surnamed Luo often visits a 24-hour library in Beijing’s Xicheng district. “The place is packed with more people reading than working, and others preparing for exams. The atmosphere is quite peaceful,” Luo told the Global Times. “There’s a noticeable increase in visitors at night, including seniors with children and professionals, but most go there to read. It feels quite relaxing. Now, besides cafes, there’s another place for me to go after work in the evening ,” Luo added.
According to a national reading survey, in April, the average Chinese adult read 4.75 physical books and 3.40 e-books in 2023. As of the end of 2023, China boasted 3,246 public libraries with a total collection of 1.44 billion books, marking a 5.6 percent increase from 2022.

C.Reading has become an important part of promoting public education.
D.We can invite authors where they share their thoughts and experiences with us.
15.What is the main reason Ye chooses to study at the 24-hour library?
A.Because it provides a wide range of information resources.

D.Because she longs for the public cultural spaces.
16.How many physical books did the average Chinese adult read in 2023?
A.4.75. B.3.40. C.5.60. D.1.44.

话题2 语言学习
Passage 1
Like any language, English has many variations in vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation. The differences can be regional or even exist within the same city! As a Canadian who lives in Vancouver, I have always known about these differences, but I didn’t get to experience them firsthand until I began attending an American university.
I found that there are some Canadian words that people in the US just don’t understand, such as a “tuque”, which is a warm hat, and “runners”, which are sneakers. My friends tease me every time I use the “washroom,” as the word isn’t used in the US — “bathroom”, “toilet” and “restroom” are often used instead. Similarly, when I asked my friend what marks he got on his test, he gave me a confused look. People in the US only say “grades”.
Though certain Canadian expressions sound very different from our North American neighbor, they share the same original language because both served as colonies of the former British Empire. This cultural heritage survives through speech and language.
Unlike American English, most Canadian spellings are similar to the British words. In the US, words like “harbour” and “colour” are spelled without the “u”. Even so, some words changed in Canada, like “aluminum (铝)”. British people spell and pronounce this word as “aluminium”.
As a result, Canadian English has developed an identity of its own. For instance, we cannot forget the most important word in Canadian English: sorry. While it isn’t really the most important word, Canadians have a reputation for being polite and friendly. I, for one, want to protect that reputation and honor my Canadian roots, even while I’m in the United States.
“Language brings with it an identity and a culture,” wrote South African comedian Trevor Noah in his book, Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood. “A language barrier says ” We’re different.” A shared language says “We’re the same’.”
1.Which one is wrong according to the passage?
A.All the Canadian words aren’t understood by the people in the US.
B.Englishes vary only in vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation.
C.A word may be pronounced differently in the same city.
D.The author didn’t realize the differences until attending an American university.
2.Why the word “sorry” is so important in Canada?
A.Because it is commonly used in Canada.
B.Because it shows the politeness and friendliness of Canadians.
C.Because people can understand it more easily.
D.Because its meaning in Canada is different from that in other countries.
3.We can learn from the text that .
A.language is an important carrier of culture B.most of the languages have the same origin
C.one culture’s meat is another culture’s poison D.honesty is the key to crossing the language barrier
4.Which can be the best title of the passage?
A.Language defines the identity of people
B.The differences in spelling, vocabulary and pronunciations
C.The differences between Canadian and American English
D.Different places, different languages.
Passage 2
It’s common that a Japanese-American bows on the phone — but only in Japanese. Behaviors and manners can become so routine that they appear even when there’s no need for them. Those who are bilingual (双语的) and bicultural know first-hand that how we behave can depend on what language we are speaking. Scientists have shown that who you are in the moment can depend on the language you are using at that time.
This is because when you have an experience, the language you are using becomes associated with it. For bilingual people, this means certain memories are more closely associated with one language than the other — a phenomenon called “language-dependent memory”. For example, a childhood memory is more likely to be remembered when the language spoken during that childhood event is spoken again.
How we think and feel can thus change depending on what language we are using. For example, people who are bilingual have an intensified (增强的) stress response when listening to the words of scolding in a native language. This may be, in part, because our early memories associated with learning a “bad” word or being scolded by our parents happened in our native language.
Because emotions play a key role in how we make decisions, people are often more sensible when making choices in the less emotional foreign language. Language can even influence our decisions. When asked whether they would be willing to give one person’s life to save a group, people who speak more than one language are much more likely to say “yes” when answering in a foreign language. The unpleasant feelings that can prevent us from making difficult choices are reduced when we’re using a non-native language.
The language we speak has an influence on how we think, feel, and even behave. In a way, knowing different languages can provide people with a variety of views through which to see the world.
5.Why is the example of the Japanese-American mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To show Japanese people are polite. B.To show bowing is good manners.
C.To show culture affects a person greatly. D.To show language affects a person’s behavior.
6.Why is a “language-dependent memory” so called?
A.Memories are greatly influenced by a certain language.
B.A childhood memory can be recalled in a certain language.
C.A good memory can help you learn a language well.
D.A language can determine a person’s memory.
7.When can a person who is bilingual make a wise decision?
A.When speaking a native language. B.When speaking a foreign language.
C.When making a random choice. D.When feeling very delighted.
8.What does the text mainly tell us?
A.The language you are speaking determines your character.
B.You can be influenced by the language you are speaking.
C.A new language can bring out a new self.
D.The more languages we learn, the better future we will have.
Passage 3
If you want to become a fluent English speaker, you should take some advice: there are four skills in learning English. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentences, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc.
There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammar - or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you encounter, but the fact you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening, you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes. If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.
9.According to the author, which should you improve first among the four skills?
A.Reading and listening B.Reading and writing
C.Writing and speaking D.Speaking and listening
10.To improve your reading, when you read you should ____.
A.look up all the new words in the dictionary. B.think about what you are reading actively
C.spend more time studying grammar D.copy as many words and sentences as possible
11.The underlined words “encounter” in paragraph 3 probably be replaced by_____.
A.meet by accident B.discover C.find on purpose D.look for
12.The author seems to agree with the view that _____.
A.everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programs every day
B.you needn’t practice listening if you keep in reading every day
C.being good at reading is helpful in improving your listening
D.you should take notes of whatever you are hearing
Passage 4
The English spoken in Australia, Great Britain and America has a surprising number of differences. Here are some of the common differences that you will find between these three kinds of English.
Pronunciation among the three types of English can be different. In American English, the “r” at the end of a word almost always affects its pronunciation, while in Australian and British English, the “r” is often silent. Australian English is unique due to the fact that many words have sounds that are gone. Instead of saying “good day”, Australian speakers say “g’ day”. The main pronunciation difference between the three, however, is the pronunciation of the vowel (元音) sounds.
Not only do the three types of English sound different, but they are also spelled differently. In some ways, the spelling shows the difference in pronunciation. For example, Americans use the word airplane. In Great Britain, the word is aeroplane, and it is pronounced with an “o” sound. Another example is the word aluminium, which is the UK spelling, and aluminum is the US spelling. Can you find the difference? In this example, the Australian spelling is the same as the UK spelling.
Another common spelling difference between British English and American English is the use of - our or -or at the end of a word. For example, in the UK, colour, flavour, honour are words that all end with -our. In America, they are spelled with -or endings. In Australia, the -our spelling is almost universal.
Also, the endings -re and -er are different between different English dialects. In America, you will go to the theater or fitness center, while in Britain you will visit the theatre or fitness centre. Again, Australian English follows the British way.
13.What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A.To show that English has developed differently in different countries
B.To tell the differences between American, British and Australian English
C.To encourage us to explore the differences of English used in different countries
D.To suggest we speak different English when we are chatting with people from different countries
14.The main pronunciation difference between American English and British English lies in______.
A.the sound of “r” at the end of words B.the words with sounds that are gone
C.the vowel sounds of some words D.the last sound of many words
15.Which of the following words belongs to the Australian spelling?
A.Airplane B.Flavor. C.Theater D.Aluminium
16.After reading the text, we can learn that______.
A.Australian English has become the most popular English now
B.Australian English is more difficult to learn than American English
C.Australian English is more difficult to follow than American English
D.Australian English follows the British way more than the American way
Passage 5
When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents (口音), most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/ Chinese/ etc. But this kind of response makes me fail to understand the true meaning of accents.
Usually, what we mean when we say someone “has an accent” is that their accent is different from the local one, or that pronunciations are different from our own. But this definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in terms of the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that define our accents. Even if you don’t hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do!
Every person speaks a dialect (方言), too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance, “You got eat or not?” (meaning “Have you eaten?”) is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different?
We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects — for the benefit of everyone.
Language differences like these provide deep understandings into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is definitely a part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.
17.What does the author think of his/ her friends’ response in paragraph 1?
A.It reflects their self-confidence.
B.It reflects their language levels.
C.It misses the point of communication.
D.It misses the real meaning of accents.
18.Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English?
A.To support the use of dialects.
B.To show the diversity of dialects.
C.To correct a grammatical mistake.
D.To highlight a traditional approach.
19.What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph?
A.Learn to speak with your local dialect.
B.Seek for an official definition of accents.
C.Appreciate the value of accents and dialects.
D.Distinguish our local languages from others’.
20.What can be a suitable title for this passage?
A.Everyone Has an Accent
B.Accents Weaken Our Uniqueness
C.Dialects Lead to Misunderstanding
D.Standard English Is at Risk

Passage 1
Freshman year of high school is a big transition (过渡) for any student.
Luckily, you’re not the only person going through this, and plenty of others have made the transition before you too.
One of the ways in which high school is different from middle school or junior high the most is the higher expectations. You’ll find that you’re expected to keep closer track of your own schedule and responsibilities with fewer people checking up on you. At the same time, your classes are likely to become more challenging, and you might be participating in new school activities as well.
Some students find it hard to keep up with everything at first, which is totally normal. One way to prepare in advance for these higher expectations is to make sure that you have organized schedules in place before you start high school.
Another important skill for meeting these higher expectations is building a strong support network. No matter how strong a student you are, at some point you will need some help. Try to get to know at least some of your teachers beyond your classroom communication. Be an active learner during class and stay after class to ask questions. Passage 3
There are as many kinds of careers as there are people. They vary greatly in the type of work involved and in the ways they influence a person’s life. The kind of career you have can affect your life in many ways. By making wise decisions concerning your career, you can help yourself build the life you want. To do that, you need as much information as possible. The more you know about yourself, the better able you will be to choose a satisfying career.
What do people hope to obtain from a career? Some people desire a high income. Some hope for fame. Others seek for adventure. Still others intend to serve people and make the world a better place. Before you begin to explore career fields, you should determine your values, your interests, and your aptitudes that will make you competent for your future work. Most people are happiest in jobs that fit their values, interests, and skills. Each person has many values, which vary in strength. For example, money is the strongest value for some people — that is, wealth is more important to them than anything else. As a result, they focus their thoughts, behaviour, and emotions on the goal of earning a high income. Other values include devoting to religion, taking risks, spending time with family, and helping others.
Before making a career decision, you can ask yourself what is most important to you and examine your beliefs to better know your values. For example, is it important to you to work as a member of a team? Or would you rather be in charge or work alone? If working alone or being in charge is important to you, independence is probably one of your primary values.

C.The places to achieve our values. D.The ways to understand our values.
Passage 4
Want to catch more fish at night? Watch the moon! Using the moon, you are able to learn several things about fish at night. During a full moon night, you are most likely to find fish hiding in the shadows. When you find shadows on the water(from trees, etc), you know exactly where you need to cast your line.
If the moonlight is not shining down on the water and there are no shadows, the fish will be separated in the water, making your job of finding them much more difficult.
On the other side of the coin, it seems like the fish are more likely to hit the bait(饵)when the moon is hidden, either by clouds or a quarter moon. So, the real trick is to use the moon to decide how you are going to fish that particular night.
If you have a bright, full moon, head for the shadows on the water. If you are on the water and the moon is nowhere in sight, you can go straight to your favorite spot and fish like you normally do, but expect to get more frequent and harder hits on your line.
Some fishermen swear they only fish during a full moon, others say no moonlight is best. I say, both are best; you just have to change your style depending on how much moonlight you have that night.
Try it out for yourself and see if you get the same results. This tip alone has helped me catch some of the biggest fish in my life. Hopefully it will help you do the same.
12.Where should you cast your line during a full moon night?
A.In a place with shadows.
B.In a place near shallow water.
C.In a place where it is very bright.
D.In a place where thick grass grows.
13.On a night without moonlight, the fish usually .
A.gather around the bank
B.hide in deep water in groups
C.refuse to hit the bait
D.stay in different areas in the water
14.If you go fishing on a night without the moon, you ______.
A.may get no fish at all
B.can choose the usual fishing place
C.will catch only small fish
D.may have the fishing line broken
15.It seems that when fishing at night, the author ______.
A.always choose a full moon night
B.prefers to stay at a lonely spot

Passage 1
Being the strong wife and mother that she is, Diana Register often hid her deep pain and suffering from those around her. In the weeks and months following her husband’s cancer diagnosis, Diana would search for “hiding” places where she could let the uncontrollable waterfalls of tears flow from her eyes.
“The storage room was a favorite. Then was the shower. But when I wasn’t home, it was the parking lots that served as my hiding places,” she said. After her husband passed away, parking lots were Diana’s safe haven (避风港) for pain and sorrow.
One day, as she was about to place her order in the Dutch Brothers coffee drive-thru (汽车餐厅), the wave of sadness hit her like a tidal wave in the middle of her conversation with a friend.
“I could hardly catch my breath and the ugly crying started,” said Diana. “The problem was, I was stuck in the coffee line at Dutch Brothers, one place where all the workers are young, happy and jamming out to music. And there was no way out. I was literally blocked in, so unless I wanted to back right up into the SUV behind me, I was about to be seen for the mess I really was.”
The barista, who was making and serving coffee at the window, handed Diana an iced coffee with a sweet and simple note on the top. “When I looked down in the cup holder, I saw it. A pink straw, and the words ‘We love you’ written around it.”
The girl didn’t know Diana’s pain or her story, but she knew she was hurting and couldn’t fix it. “She wanted me to know I wasn’t alone and that whatever trial I was going through, there were people out there who cared about me.”

Passage 2
After their three children grew up and left home, Margaret Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, stretched their legs together on walking holidays in Switzerland. In Interlaken, they would head up the mountain and watch the paragliders (滑翔伞运动员) launch themselves into the sky. Back in town, in a large park, they watched them return to the earth. “Some day I’d love to do that,” Thompson told Kenneth.
But there was always so much to do in Interlaken. Besides, Thompson didn’t know if Kenneth would have enjoyed it. “He was not so keen on heights as I was,” she said. So she continued to watch the gliders take flight and land.
Kenneth died in 2005. Eleven years later, Thompson finally took to the skies herself, in a paraglider at the age of 80. Although some people get scared while flying, she said she just feels free. Thompson did her second paragliding when she turned 85, and raised nearly 2,000 pounds for a local charity.
Before leaving Interlaken after her second flight, Thompson asked the organizers about the age limit for paragliding. They said: “Any age, as long as you’ re fit.” Thompson, now 86, plans her third flight for when she is 90.
Thompson grew up living above her parents shop in Belfast. At 18, she helped in the shop while studying for her music diplomas (文凭) in Stranmillis, south Belfast. She started to teach piano to local children, and at the height of her teaching she gave 70 lessons a week. She still has 15 pupils on her books. “Over the years I’ve had so many that I’m teaching their children now.”
Is she scared of getting older? “Fear? No. People say: Isn’t getting old awful? I say: No. You are free to do more of the things that you want to do.”
“People might worry about falling, it being the end of them. But that doesn’t bother me at all. When it’s your time, it’s your time. No matter where you are.” Thompson added.

Passage 3
I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it.
9.What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A.His good grades got him a good job. B.He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
C.His views on social values are well known. D.He is content with his academic achievements.
10.Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship?
A.A helper. B.A judge. C.A monitor. D.A supporter.
11.What is the greatest accomplishment for the author?
A.The contribution to volunteering. B.The success in exams.
C.The recovery of confidence in life. D.The work in community service.
12.What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph mean?
A.To depend on. B.To think carefully and deeply about.
C.To pay attention to. D.To have a check on.

Passage 1
A new study published in Cell reports that a mosquito’s (蚊子) sense of smell is more complicated than thought. And it may explain how this insect is so good at seeking you out and so on.
Meg Younger, a neuroscientist at Boston University, is co-author of the study. When I visited her lab, she introduced me to her subjects, opening up one of the large cubes set to 80 degrees. Each is filled with100-plus mosquitoes.
Younger places one of the mosquito-filled cubes on a lab bench, and breathes out gently into it. Meeting the carbon dioxide, the insects go wild for other cues, like the complex blend of human body odor (气味)—that’s magnetic to a mosquito.
This attraction isn’t merely a nuisance (麻烦事) for humans worldwide. So scientists have attempted to break it. But try as they might, it’s been frustratingly hard to find chemical means of battling mosquitoes.
By looking into the mosquito’s brain to work out how it smells its surroundings, Younger and her colleagues have taken steps to do just that.
Most of what they know about the neuroscience of smell comes from mice and fruit flies, where the wiring’s fairly simple. Each neuron (神经元) in the nose or antenna has one kind of receptor that detects a single kind of odor—say , a banana. And all the neurons with receptors for the banana smell connect to the same part of the brain.
However, in case of mosquitoes, it doesn’t work. Younger and the others started searching inside mosquito brains, finding that each neuron there has multiple receptors that can detect multiple odors.
The finding that a mosquito’s sense of smell is organized differently than expected may explain why its ability to sniff people out isn’t so easy to break. It gives the insect a kind of built-in redundancy (复置装置) in the system. Because humans all smell different, mosquitoes may rely on this redundancy to broaden their target of what a person smells like.
This work could give researchers additional ways to prevent the bugs, like developing traps that contain new fragrance blends that are more attractive than people.
1.What might be the author’s job?
A.An interviewer. B.A driver. C.A librarian. D.A dentist.
2.What does the underlined “it” refer to in the fourth paragraph?
A.The attraction of mixed smell from human. B.The draw of carbon dioxide.
C.The appeal of human body odor. D.The use of Chemical means.
3.What difficulty do the scientists have in the study?
A.They hardly know about neuroscience. B.They cann’t locate mosquitoes’ brain.
C.They want the theory of neuroscience. D.They are facing a new project.
4.What’s the author’s attitude towards the study?
A.Negative B.Helpful C.Doubtful D.Inspiring
Passage 2
According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), six red wolf pups (幼崽) were found in North Carolina’s Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge last week. That’s great news for endangered red wolves, and marks the first time these pups have been born in the wild since 2020.
Long ago, red wolves lived all through the US Southeast. But as the wolves were hunted, and as more and more land was taken over for cities, roads and farms, the wolves began to die out.
In 1973, a new law called the Endangered Species Act was passed, which was designed to protect animals that were in danger of dying out, like red wolves. At the time, there were only about 17 red wolves remaining in the wild.14 of those wolves were caught and fed by researchers to protect them. Then, the FWS conducted a program called the Red Wolf Recovery Program. But by 1980, red wolves were believed to have been extinct in the wild.
Luckily, the wolves did well under people’s care, and their numbers continued to grow. Soon the FWS began releasing red wolves back into the wild. Those wolves with tracking collars spread out, paired up, and began to have pups. By 2012, red wolf numbers had hit a new high point of about 120 wolves in the wild. The program’s success led to many other programs aimed at bringing animals back from the edge of extinction.
Sadly, though, wild red wolf numbers began to drop again. Some wolves were shot and others were hit by cars. As the number of adults fell. the number of pups being born also began to drop. In 2020, a total of four pups were born in the wild. In 2021, 2022 and 2023, no wild pups were born at all.
So the news that six pups hatched in the wild this year is a huge boost. But the good news isn’t an accident.
5.How did the FWS protect red wolves?
A.It made a new law to protect them. B.It kept them in the wild.
C.It moved them into a new habitat. D.It carried out a recovery program.
6.What is partly responsible for the reduced number of red wolves in recent years? ?
A.The lack of food B.The worsened weather.
C.The illegal hunting. D.The loss of forests.
7.What will be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.The accidents that happened this year. B.The effort the FWS has made.
C.The wishes from the researchers. D.The health condition of the pups.
8.What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.Endangered Species Act Taking Effect B.Red Wolf Pups Decreasing in the US
C.Endangered Red Wolf Pups Born in the Wild D.Future Faced by Endangered Red Wolves
Passage 3
According to official government figures, there are more than twice as many kangaroos as people in Australia, and many Australians consider them dangerous. It is reported that kangaroos are involved in more than 80 percent of the 20,000 vehicle-animal accidents each year. In the country’s under-populated region, the common belief is that kangaroo numbers have rocketed to “pandemic (大规模流行的) percentage”.
It is believed that killing kangaroos is critical to boosting the economy. Meat, skins and leather from kangaroos have been sold to 56 countries. Global brands such as Nike, Puma and Adidas buy strong, soft “k-leather” to make athletic products. And kangaroo meat is finding its way into more and more grocery stores.
Advocates point out that low-fat, high-protein kangaroo meat is more environmentally friendly than greenhouse gas-releasing sheep and cattle. John Kelly, former executive director of the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia, says, “Harvesting our food from animals adapted to Australia’s environment is extremely wise and sustainable. Many ecologists will tell you that there is no more humane way of producing red meat.”
Opponents of the industry call the killing inhumane, unsustainable and unnecessary. Dwayne Bannon-Harrison, a member of the Yuin people of New South Wales, says the idea that kangaroos are destroying the country is laughable. “They’ve been walking in this land a lot longer than people have,” he says. “How could something that’s been here for thousands of years be ‘destroying’ the country? I don’t understand the logic in that.”
Can Australians’ disagreement on kangaroos be solved? George Wilson, a professor from Australian National University, says that if kangaroos were privately owned, then graziers (放牧人) would protect the animals, treating them as possessions (财产). They could feed them, lease them, breed them and charge hunters a fee for access. “If you want to protect something,” Wilson says, “you have to give it a value. Animals that are considered dangerous don’t have value.” If kangaroos were more valuable than cattle or sheep, landholders would work with the kangaroo industry on branding, marketing and quality control. The government’s role would be oversight and regulation.
9.What do we know from the article?
A.Kangaroos are to blame for most accidents.
B.Global brands make small profits on kangaroos.
C.Kangaroos are relatively friendly to the environment.
D.Over-populated kangaroos are doing great harm to the country’s economy.
10.Why does Dwayne Bannon disagree to kill kangaroos?
A.Because it is laughable. B.Because it is destroying the country.
C.Because they have existed on Earth longer than man. D.Because they live in harmony with people.
11.Which of the following might be the benefit of privatization (私有化)?
A.The popularity of kangaroo hunting. B.The reduction in the number of kangaroos.
C.The establishment of more conservation areas. D.The better management of the kangaroo industry.
12.What is the purpose of this passage?
A.To argue against the killing of kangaroos.
B.To provide a solution to the problem caused by kangaroos.
C.To present different opinions on the kangaroo industry.
D.To stress the importance of protecting kangaroos.
Passage 4
After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park. By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.
Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.
The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations — major food sources (来源) for the wolf — grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation (植被), which reduced plant diversity in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’s red foxes, and completely drove away the park’s beavers.
As early as 1966, biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets.
The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone. Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone. Elk, deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.
13.What is the text mainly about?
A.Wildlife research in the United States. B.Plant diversity in the Yellowstone area.
C.The conflict between farmers and gray wolves. D.The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park.
14.What does the underlined word “displaced” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Forced out. B.Separated. C.Tested. D.Tracked down.
15.What did the disappearance of gray wolves bring about?
A.Damage to local ecology (生态). B.A decline in the park’s income.
C.Preservation of vegetation. D.An increase in the variety of animals.
16.What is the author’s attitude towards the Yellowstone wolf project?
A.Disapproving. B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Uncaring.

Passage 2
At 12, my father decided to take me on a trip to France. I had never been out of the country before, so I was very excited. My aunt, my father and I went around with my father showing us all the unbelievable sites in Paris. None of us spoke much French but we loved the city.
We had taken the subway all over the city and were congratulating ourselves on our mastering what is honestly an excellent subway design that is pretty easy to follow. We decided to visit Versailles by train. We chatted happily along the way until my father realized we were far into the French countryside and no one around spoke English.
We reached the end of the line and felt afraid when everyone finally left the train. An old man and his grandchild noticed us and came to help. He spoke no English, so in broken French we tried to explain. When he finally understood, this great man settled his grandson and showed us to the correct train and then boarded with us.
Later we knew the truth that there was a train transfer (转乘) and he didn’t want us to miss it. This kind man rode a train for an hour and a half out of his way to make sure that three Americans got where they wanted to be. He refused to let us pay for his ticket. He did it all with a gentle smile and patted our hands gently at the stop. Then in his quiet way, he boarded the train to return the way he had come.

She ended up being my best friend and one of the kindest and liveliest girls I knew.

话题2 语言学习
【答案】1.B 2.B 3.A 4.C
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章通过作者的亲身经历,介绍了加拿大英语与美国英语的差异。
1.细节理解题。根据第一段“Like any language, English has many variations in vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation. The differences can be regional or even exist within the same city! (和其他语言一样,英语在词汇、拼写和发音上也有很多变化。这种差异可能是地区性的,甚至可能存在于同一个城市!)”可知,B选项“英语只在词汇、拼写和发音上有所不同”错误。故选B。
2.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“For instance, we cannot forget the most important word in Canadian English: sorry. While it isn’t really the most important word, Canadians have a reputation for being polite and friendly.(例如,我们不能忘记加拿大英语中最重要的单词:对不起。虽然这个词并不是最重要的,但加拿大人以礼貌和友好而闻名)”可知,“对不起”这个词在加拿大如此重要因为它显示了加拿大人的礼貌和友好。故选B。
3.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Language brings with it an identity and a culture(语言带来了身份和文化)”可知,语言是文化的重要载体。故选A。
4.主旨大意题。根据第四段“Unlike American English, most Canadian spellings are similar to the British words.(与美式英语不同,大多数加拿大英语的拼写与英式英语相似)”结合文章通过作者的亲身经历,介绍了加拿大英语与美国英语的差异可知,C选项“加拿大英语和美国英语的差异”最符合文章标题。故选C。
【答案】5.D 6.A 7.B 8.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲的是人们会受到所说的语言的影响。
5.推理判断题。根据第一段的句子“It’s common that a Japanese-American bows on the phone — but only in Japanese. Behaviors and manners can become so routine that they appear even when there’s no need for them.(日裔美国人在电话中鞠躬是很常见的,但只在用日语时。行为和礼仪可能变得如此常规,即使在没有必要的时候也会出现。)”可知,日裔美国人在用日语打电话时也会鞠躬,这本来是没必要的,但是,这一例子正好说明语言会影响人的行为。故选D项。
6.细节理解题。根据第二段的句子“This is because when you have an experience, the language you are using becomes associated with it. For bilingual people, this means certain memories are more closely associated with one language than the other — a phenomenon called “language-dependent memory”.(这是因为当你有一种经历时,你使用的语言就与它联系在一起了。对于会说两种语言的人来说,这意味着某些记忆与一种语言的联系要比与另一种语言的联系更紧密——这种现象被称为‘语言依赖记忆’。)”可知,一些记忆现象被称作“语言依赖记忆”是因为记忆受某种语言的影响很大。故选A项。
7.细节理解题。根据第四段的句子“Because emotions play a key role in how we make decisions, people are often more sensible when making choices in the less emotional foreign language. (因为情绪在我们如何做决定中起着关键作用,所以人们在用不那么情绪化的外语做选择时往往更明智。)”可知,一个会说两种语言的人在说外语的时候能做出明智的决定。故选B项。
8.主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是根据第一段最后一句“Scientists have shown that who you are in the moment can depend on the language you are using at that time.(科学家们已经证明,你在那一刻是谁,取决于你当时使用的语言。)”和最后一段第一句“The language we speak has an influence on how we think, feel, and even behave. (我们所说的语言影响着我们的思维、感觉甚至行为。)”可知,本文主要讲的是人们会受到正在所说的语言的影响。故选B项。
【答案】9.A 10.B 11.A 12.C
【导语】这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了如何流利地说英语和写英语。
9.细节理解题。根据第一段“The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening. (你必须记住的最重要的事情是,如果你想提高你的口语和写作技能,你应该首先掌握阅读和听力技能。)”可知,阅读和听力是最重要的内容,故选A。
10.细节理解题。根据第二段“Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. (尽可能多地阅读。但是你的阅读必须是积极的。)”可知,我们要积极的思考我们所阅读的内容,故选B。
11.词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“but the fact you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example in other passages or books, is enough (但只要你是第一次看到它们,在任何时候看到它们(比如在其他段落或书籍中)都能认出它们,就足够了)”可知,指在阅读中你所遇见的那些你不熟悉的单词,能够认出它们就够了,故该词指“遇见”,故选A。
12.细节理解题。根据第四段“You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. (你只有把注意力放在阅读上,熟练地阅读,你才能赶上听力。)”可知,擅长读有助于你的听力。故选C。

Here are some of the common differences that you will find between these three kinds of English. (澳大利亚、英国和美国所说的英语有着惊人的差异。以下是你会在这三种英语之间发现的一些共同差异。)”结合文章主要介绍了澳大利亚英语、英式英语和美式英语的一些不同之处。可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是区分美式英语、英式英语和澳式英语。故选B。
14.细节理解题。根据第二段“The main pronunciation difference between the three, however, is the pronunciation of the vowel (元音) sounds .(然而,三者之间的主要发音区别在于元音的发音。)”可知,美式英语和英式英语的主要发音区别在于一些单词的元音发音。故选C。

【答案】17.D 18.A 19.C 20.A
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。主要论述了每个人都有口音。从这个意义上说,指出某人“有口音”是毫无意义的。语言差异可以帮助人们洞察他人的文化经历和背景,因此我们要欣赏口音和方言的价值。
17.推理判断题。根据第一段“When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/ Chinese/ etc. But this kind of response makes me fail to understand the true meaning of accents.(当我跟一些朋友提到我们每个人说话都有口音时,他们中的大多数人都自豪地回答:“哦,我说的是标准的英语或汉语等等。” 但这种回应让我无法理解口音的真正含义。)”可知,作者认为他或她的朋友的回应忽略了口音的真正含义。故选D。
18.推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“Every person speaks a dialect, too. (每个人也会说一种方言。)”及本段后文“American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different?(以美式英语为母语的人会停顿,这并不意味着新加坡英语口语是 “错误的” 或 “不合语法的”。按照新加坡英语母语者自成体系的语法规则,这个句子结构规范,表意清晰。仅仅因为它与众不同,就该被视为错误吗?)”可知,作者认为不能因为它不同就认为它是错的。所以作者使用新加坡口语的例子是为了证明使用方言是可以接受的。故选A。
19.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Language differences like these provide deep understandings into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is definitely a part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.(诸如此类的语言差异能让我们深入了解人们的文化经历和背景。在全球化时代,一个人的说话方式无疑是其身份认同的一部分。大多数人会很乐意谈论自己语言背后的文化。这样一来,我们会更多地了解我们所生活的世界,还能在这个过程中交到朋友。)”可知, 作者在最后一段中建议我们欣赏口音和方言的价值。故选C。
20.主旨大意题。根据第二段“In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do! (从这个意义上说,指出某人“有口音”是毫无意义的。我们都有!)”以及第三段“Every person speaks a dialect, too. (每个人也会说一种方言。)”可知,作者认为每个人都有口音,而且作者在最后一段指出不同的口音可以让我们更多地了解我们生活的世界,并在这一过程中结交朋友。故A项“Everyone Has an Accent (每个人都有口音)”最能概括本文主旨。故选A。
话题3 方法策略
Keeping healthy relationships with your friends and teachers is a great way to make sure that you have people who are willing to help when you need them.
Try to get to know at least some of your teachers beyond your classroom communication. Be an active learner during class and stay after class to ask questions. Take advantage of email or class messaging systems. The better your teachers know you, the better prepared they’ll be to help when you need them.
It’s important for you to keep in mind as you start high school that no one is perfect. Transitions are hard for everyone, and starting high school is a big transition. These challenges provide a great chance to recreate yourself.

话题5 人与动植物
【答案】1.A 2.A 3.D 4.B
【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了蚊子具有敏锐的嗅觉,根据人体释放的混合性气味搜索到人类,科学们正在研究方法解决这一问题。
1.推理判断题。根据第二段关键句“Meg Younger, a neuroscientist at Boston University, is co-author of the study. When I visited her lab, she introduced me to her subjects, opening up one of the large cubes set to 80 degrees. (波士顿大学的神经科学家Meg Younger是这项研究的合著者。当我参观她的实验室时,她向我介绍了她的研究对象,打开了一个设置为80度的大立方体。)”可知,作者去参观神经科学家的实验室,询问她的研究对象,由此可知,作者的工作是一名采访者,去采访一位神经科学家。故选A项。
2.词义猜测题。根据第三段关键句“Meeting the carbon dioxide, the insects go wild for other cues, like the complex blend of human body odor (气味)—that’s magnetic to a mosquito. (遇到二氧化碳,昆虫会疯狂地寻找其他线索,比如人体气味的复杂混合——这对蚊子来说是有吸引力的。)”可知,上文告诉我们人体复杂气味对蚊子来说是有吸引力的,由此可知,科学家们试图打破这种人体复杂气味的吸引力,“it”代指“人类混合气味的吸引力”。故选A项。
3.推理判断题。根据倒数第三段内容“However, in case of mosquitoes, it doesn’t work. Younger and the others started searching inside mosquito brains, finding that each neuron there has multiple receptors that can detect multiple odors. (然而,对于蚊子来说,这是行不通的。Younger和其他人开始在蚊子的大脑中进行搜索,发现每个神经元都有多个受体,可以检测多种气味。)”可知,研究人员的方法对于蚊子行不通,因为蚊子的大脑每个神经元都有多个受体,可以检测多种气味,这是一个需要解决的新项目,由此可知,科学家们在这项研究中遇到的困难是他们正面临一个新项目。故选D项。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段内容“This work could give researchers additional ways to prevent the bugs, like developing traps that contain new fragrance blends that are more attractive than people. (这项工作可以为研究人员提供更多预防虫子的方法,比如开发含有比人更具吸引力的新香味混合物的陷阱。)”可知,作者认为这项研究可以为研究人员提供更多预防虫子的方法,由此可知,作者认为这项研究是有用的。故选B项。
【答案】5.D 6.C 7.B 8.C
【导语】这是一篇说明文。讲述了六只红狼幼崽在野外出生,这是自从2020年以来第一次有红狼幼崽出生,因为红狼濒临危险,是快要灭绝的动物,所以FWS开展了一个名为红狼恢复计划的项目。

【答案】9.C 10.C 11.D 12.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要就袋鼠在澳大利亚的影响展开讨论,介绍了其经济与生态效益,以及对于袋鼠管理的不同观点。
9.细节理解题。根据第三段“Advocates point out that low-fat, high-protein kangaroo meat is more environmentally friendly than greenhouse gas-releasing sheep and cattle. (支持者指出,低脂、高蛋白袋鼠肉比释放温室气体的绵羊和牛更环保)”可知,袋鼠是比绵羊和牛更环保的动物,即相对而言袋鼠对环境更友好。故选C。
10.细节理解题。根据第四段“Dwayne Bannon-Harrison, a member of the Yuin people of New South Wales, says the idea that kangaroos are destroying the country is laughable. “They’ve been walking in this land a lot longer than people have,” he says. “How could something that’s been here for thousands of years be ‘destroying’ the country? I don’t understand the logic in that.”
根据最后一段“If kangaroos were more valuable than cattle or sheep, landholders would work with the kangaroo industry on branding, marketing and quality control. The government’s role would be oversight and regulation. (如果袋鼠比牛或羊更有价值,土地所有者将与袋鼠产业合作进行品牌、营销和质量控制。政府的作用将是监督和监管)”可知,私有化之后,土地所有者可以与袋鼠产业在各方面进行合作,同时得到政府的监督和监管,即私有化会使得袋鼠产业得到更好的管理。故选D。
12.推理判断题。根据第一段“According to official government figures, there are more than twice as many kangaroos as people in Australia, and many Australians consider them dangerous. (根据政府官方数据,袋鼠的数量是澳大利亚人的两倍多,许多澳大利亚人认为它们很危险)”。第二段“It is believed that killing kangaroos is critical to boosting the economy.(人们认为,杀死袋鼠对促进经济发展至关重要)”以及最后一段“George Wilson, a professor from Australian National University, says that if kangaroos were privately owned, then graziers (放牧人) would protect the animals, treating them as possessions (财产). They could feed them, lease them, breed them and charge hunters a fee for access.(澳大利亚国立大学教授乔治·威尔逊说,如果袋鼠是私人所有的,那么牧场主就会保护这些动物,把它们当作财产)”可知,文章开头提出问题,袋鼠使得人们面临危机,后文提出不同的解决方法,所以文章的写作目的是为袋鼠造成的问题提供解决方案。故选B。
B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Uncaring.
【答案】13.D 14.A 15.A 16.B
划线词上文“Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States(灰狼曾经在黄石地区和美国大陆的大部分地区随处可见)”提到灰狼曾经随处可见,but表示转折,结合划线词下文“By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area.(到20世纪20年代,狼几乎从黄石地区消失了)”可知,划线词所在句意为“但由于人类的发展它们逐渐被迫使离开”。由此可知,划线词displaced意为“迫使离开”。故选A。
15.推理判断题。根据第三段“The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations — major food sources (来源) for the wolf — grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation (植被), which reduced plant diversity in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’s red foxes, and completely drove away the park’s beavers.(狼群的消失带来了许多意想不到的结果。
根据最后一段中“The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.(黄石狼项目一直是一个有价值的实验,帮助生物学家决定是否也将狼重新引入该国的其他地区)”可推知,作者对黄石公园引进灰狼持积极态度。故选B。

What impressed me most was the man and his kindness during the amazing trip. Some Americans think the French are rude for some reason, but I always try to persuade them to change their minds with this very story.

A.They couldn’t understand the signs of the train.
B.They failed to get off the train at the right time.

A.He paid for their train tickets. B.He showed them the returning way.
C.He invited them to travel together. D.He led them to their place.
