When I was a much younger man than I am today, I was a creative writer. I wrote short stories and poems. I wrote for the pure enjoyment of putting thoughts down on paper. Short stories mostly. For me.
Then I spent 20 years writing professionally as a copywriter. I was using all of my creative energy to write campaigns for everything from Apple to Volkswagen. I had nothing left. My creative well was dry. For the last 15 years, I was no longer writing for a living. Or for myself.
Then one day, I saw a Facebook friend post something about a new typewriter he had acquired, bringing his collection to 12 machines. I immediately thought about the 100-year-old Underwood No.5 typewriter I bought about 35 years ago at a flea market (跳蚤市场) for $25. I never used it. I just loved the look of it and bought it to show respect for my love of writing. And it looked cool sitting on display as a conversation starter in our dining room.
Suddenly, I found myself researching “typewriter repair” online...which led me down a rabbit hole of not just repair people but typewriters, all kinds of typewriters. I now have machines from the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s, so far totaling 15 machines. Each machine is a good example of industrial design from the era in which it was made. In truth, they’re time machines that fire my creativity and inspire me to write again in a way that nothing has done for decades.
When I sit at my typewriter, I don’t get notifications. The only sound I hear is the bell ringing at the end of a line indicating that I need to return the carriage. The real world is a noisy place with so many distractions But all that goes away when I sit down to a machine like my Royal Portable 2 made in 1931. It’s just me and my thoughts, buttoning one letter at a time on a real piece of paper. I'm writing again. For me.
24. What do we know about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. He overused his creativity. B. He preferred to write poems.
C. He stood out as a writer in his 20s. D. He was very productive for 35 years.
25. Why did the author buy the Underwood No.5 typewriter?
A. It was low-priced. B. It was easy to use.
C. It was good-looking. D. It was one of a kind.
26. What does the author think of the typewriters in his collection?
A. They help him relive his youth. B. They refresh his long-lost interest.
C. They have great historical significance. D. They deserve to be collected and preserved.
27. How does the author probably feel at his typewriter now?
A. Lonely and undetermined. B. Ambitious and courageous.
C. Single-minded and peaceful. D. Embarrassed and out of place.
A 25. C 26. B 27. C
根据第一段“When I was a much younger man than I am today, I was a creative writer. I wrote short stories and poems. I wrote for the pure enjoyment of putting thoughts down on paper. Short stories mostly. For me. (在我比现在年轻得多时候,我曾是一名创意作家,写过短篇小说和诗歌。我写作纯粹是因为享受把想法落在纸上的乐趣,主要是写短篇小说,为自己而写)”以及第二段“Then I spent 20 years writing professionally as a copywriter. I was using all of my creative energy to write campaigns for everything from Apple to Volkswagen. I had nothing left. My creative well was dry. For the last 15 years, I was no longer writing for a living. Or for myself. (后来,我做了20年的职业文案撰稿人,把所有的创造力都用在为从苹果到大众汽车等各种品牌撰写营销文案上。我耗尽了一切,灵感的源泉干涸了。在过去的 15 年里,我既不再以写作为生,也不再为自己而写)”可知,作者年轻时是创意作家,后来作为专业文案撰写人工作了20年,把所有创意能量都用在了写广告文案上,以至于创意源泉枯竭,由此可推断出作者过度使用了他的创造力。故选A。
根据第三段中“I just loved the look of it and bought it to show respect for my love of writing. (我只是喜欢它的样子,买它是为了表达我对写作的热爱)”可知,作者买Underwood No.5打字机是因为它好看。故选C。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“In truth, they’re time machines that fire my creativity and inspire me to write again in a way that nothing has done for decades. (事实上,它们是时光机,激发了我的创造力,并以几十年来从未有过的方式激励我再次写作)”可知,作者认为他收藏的打字机重新激发了他长久以来失去的写作兴趣。故选B。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“When I sit at my typewriter, I don’t get notifications. The only sound I hear is the bell ringing at the end of a line indicating that I need to return the carriage. The real world is a noisy place with so many distractions (使人分心的事物). But all that goes away when I sit down to a machine like my Royal Portable 2 made in 1931. It’s just me and my thoughts, buttoning one letter at a time on a real piece of paper. I'm writing again.
C
What if our bodies had a new way — other than our eardrums — to hear the world around us? That’s what neuroscientist David Eagleman wondered five years ago. Then he looked at the body for answers and saw a huge sound jack (插孔). “We have this huge input channel called our skin,” he says, “and we aren’t using it.”
So Eagleman, along with Scott Novich, his student at Baylor College of Medicine, created the Versatile Extra-Sensory Transducer, or VEST. The VEST is worn like it sounds. Through 32 tiny motors, it translates sound waves into vibrations (振动) on your back.
First, a computer or smartphone picks up sounds from your surroundings and breaks down the sound sample into a set of specific frequencies. Each frequency band in the set sets off one of 32 motors in the VEST. With time and practice, your brain learns to unconsciously interpret the series of vibrations as sound — and individual sounds as words in a language.
“There is no theoretical reason why this can’t be almost as good as the ears,” says Eagleman. So far, he has trained deaf people to recognize single words through the VEST. He hopes to eventually help them understand sentences, and then full conversations. Just like with language, Eagleman discovered, children — whose brains are more shapable — learned to interpret the VEST more easily than adults did.
Eagleman says his device could one day be deployed in dozens of professions to better understand complex environments. A pilot could interpret a plane’s condition through the VEST’s vibrations. An astronaut could literally feel the health of the International Space Station. Eagleman and Novich’s startup, Neo Sensory, plans to develop the VEST for all kinds of uses, so someday we all can experience this sixth sense. “The possibilities are endless for the kind of information we could be streaming in,” says Eagleman.
28. What is the VEST?
A. A huge input channel on the body. B. A computer-smartphone connector.
C. A processing program with tiny motors. D. A wearable sound-vibration transformer.
29. What is the working procedure of the VEST?
①motors to be activated ②sounds to be decomposed ③words to be interpreted
A. ①②③ B. ②③① C. ①③② D. ②①③
30. What does the underlined word “deployed” in paragraph 5. probably mean?
A. Assessed. B. Employed. C. Detected. D. Invented.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Listen with Your Skin B. Hear Your Sixth Sense
C. To Listen or Not D. Here to Hear.
D 29. D 30. B 31. A
根据第二段“So Eagleman, along with Scott Novich, his student at Baylor College of Medicine, created the Versatile Extra-Sensory Transducer, or VEST. The VEST is worn like it sounds. Through 32 tiny motors, it translates sound waves into vibrations (振动) on your back.(因此,伊格尔曼和他在贝勒医学院的学生斯科特·诺维奇一起创造了多功能超感传感器。VEST的穿着听起来很得体。通过32个微小的马达,它将声波转化为背部的振动)”可知,VEST是一种可穿戴设备,能够将声音转化为背部的振动。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“First, a computer or smartphone picks up sounds from your surroundings and breaks down the sound sample into a set of specific frequencies. Each frequency band in the set sets off one of 32 motors in the VEST. With time and practice, your brain learns to unconsciously interpret the series of vibrations as sound—and individual sounds as words in a language.(首先,电脑或智能手机会从你周围的环境中拾取声音,并将声音样本分解为一组特定的频率。该组中的每个频带都会触发VEST中32个电机中的一个。随着时间的推移和练习,你的大脑会无意识地将一系列振动解释为声音,并将单个声音解释为语言中的单词)”可知,工作流程先是声音被采集并分解成特定频率,接着这些频率激活VEST上的电机,最后大脑学会解读振动为声音和语言中的单词。因此,正确顺序为②①③。故选D。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在句中“to better understand complex environments(以更好地了解复杂的环境)”以及“A pilot could interpret a plane’s condition through the VEST’s vibrations. An astronaut could literally feel the health of the International Space Station. (飞行员可以通过VEST的振动来解释飞机的状况。宇航员可以真正感受到国际空间站的健康状况)”可知,提到该装置未来可能在多种职业中被使用,以更好地理解复杂环境,因此deployed在此处意为“使用”。故选B。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“So Eagleman, along with Scott Novich, his student at Baylor College of Medicine, created the Versatile Extra-Sensory Transducer, or VEST. The VEST is worn like it sounds. Through 32 tiny motors, it translates sound waves into vibrations (振动) on your back.(因此,伊格尔曼和他在贝勒医学院的学生斯科特·诺维奇一起创造了多功能超感传感器。背心的穿着听起来很得体。通过32个微小的马达,它将声波转化为背部的振动)”以及全文可知,文章主要介绍了一种名为VEST的新设备,它能够让佩戴者通过皮肤“听到”声音,这是一种利用振动将声音信号传递给大脑的方式,颠覆了传统依赖耳膜的听觉方式。因此,A选项“用你的皮肤去听”最能概括文章内容,体现了这种创新的听觉感知方式,适合作文章的标题。故选A。
D
You may have read a short story on Twitter, seen a video poem on YouTube, or just followed the path of a hypertext story. It may surprise you, but all those things I just mentioned, and more, are considered literature, digital literature, to be precise.
Digital literature is a vague concept. The definition changes depending on who you ask. Some say it is made up of texts that were created digitally, and that are usually meant to be read on a computer. The Electronic Literature Organization (ELO) has another definition for it: “Work with an important literary aspect that takes advantage of the capabilities and contexts provided by the stand-alone or networked computer”.
A more updated definition comes from writer Simon Groth. He says that the intention of digital literature is to “showcase innovation and creativity in storytelling for digital media and new directions in contemporary literary practice informed by technology”. It’s still a very vague definition, and just like the others, it provides absolutely no guidelines as to what can be considered digital literature or not. But that’s why I think it works. Because, like the others, it tells you that its main component is the use of technology. But it also leaves breathing room for newer technologies such as smartphones, virtual reality and platforms like Twine, among other things. Technology didn’t exist when the ELO wrote their definition in 2007.
So basically, it’s a new medium for literature. It takes advantage of technology to both write and present a piece of writing. Because it comes in many shapes and sizes, there is a lot of gray area in what can actually be considered digital literature, but think of it as the middle ground between ebooks and video games (none of which are digital literature). Or you can see it as an intersection of digital media and textuality.
So if you write a novel on your computer and print it, it’s not digital literature. But if you write a novel and publish it in a blog or social media, while you interact with your readers, then that’s digital literature.
32. What does the underlined word “vague” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Correct. B. Outdated. C. Unclear. D. Scientific.
33. What can we know about the ELO’s definition of digital literature?
A. It failed to provide the guidelines. B. It didn’t allow for newer technologies.
C. It could easily lead to misunderstandings. D. It took into consideration only literary aspects.
34. Which of the following belongs to digital literature according to the author?
A. A video game. B. A printed novel.
C. A blog comment. D. A story on Twine.
35. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To clarify a concept. B. To introduce a theory.
C. To advocate e-learning. D. To explain a phenomenon.
C 33. B 34. D 35. A
根据划线词后句子“The definition changes depending on who you ask.(定义会根据你问的人而变化)”可知,数字文学是一个不确定的概念,所以“Digital literature is a vague concept.”
根据第三段“Technology didn’t exist when the ELO wrote their definition in 2007.(2007年ELO写下他们的定义时,某些技术还不存在)”可知,ELO下定义时没有考虑到后来出现的新技术。
根据第三段“But it also leaves breathing room for newer technologies such as smartphones, virtual reality and platforms like Twine, among other things. (但是它为智能手机、虚拟现实以及Twine等平台新技术留出了空间)”和最后一段“But if you write a novel and publish it in a blog or social media, while you interact with your readers, then that’s digital literature. (但如果你写了一部小说并发布在博客或社交媒体上,同时与读者互动,那就是数字文学)”可知,新媒体平台的文学作品都可以被认为是数字文学,故Twine平台上的故事属于数字文学。故选D项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。结合全文内容,围绕数字文学展开,介绍了其概念的模糊性,不同的定义以及具体例子等,由此可知,文章主要是为了阐明“数字文学”这一概念。故选A项。

Emily had spent her entire life in New York City. The tall buildings, the crowded streets, and the friends she had grown up with were the essence of her existence. But when she was 15, her life took an unexpected turn. Her father got a promotion that required the family to relocate to Texas. It was a depressing decision as it meant parting with everything she held dear.
With the move came a new school for Emily. Every time she considered leaving her current school, she was overcome with sadness. She was afraid of the changes ahead — the new environment, the new school, and the new faces she would encounter. She wasn't sure if she could adapt or if she would be isolated.
After a long and tiring journey across the states, the family reached Texas and settled down. When the day to start at her new school arrived, Emily's mind was burdened with concerns. What if the classmates were mean and unapproachable? What if she remained friendless?
The following morning, Emily's parents drove her to school. Her heart pounded in her chest as they arrived at the large concrete building. She hugged her parents tightly, took a deep breath, and got out of the car. With each step towards the school entrance, her nervousness increased. She felt as if she was entering a completely strange world.
Emily was welcomed by a school teacher, who was extremely kind. Noticing Emily's uneasiness and shyness, he decided to give her a tour of the campus first. Emily was shown the art studio, the well-equipped library, and the expansive football field where she thought about joining the cheerleading team. As they walked around, Emily slowly realized that the school was actually quite charming and started to feel a bit more at ease.
Finally, they reached the academic building and made their way to Emily's new classroom, and her heart began to race once again. The teacher led her to the door and gave her a reassuring smile.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Standing at the classroom door, Emily hesitated for a moment. She could hear the chatter of students inside, and her hands grew sweaty. With a final glance at the teacher, who nodded encouragingly, she pushed the door open. The room fell silent for a moment as everyone looked at her. But then, a girl with a warm smile stood up and said, "Hi! You must be Emily. We've been waiting for you." The friendly greeting eased the tension in the air. The other students soon followed suit, introducing themselves and asking her about New York.
As the class began, Emily felt a sense of relief wash over her. The classmates seemed friendly and eager to get to know her. She actively participated when she could, and her classmates were helpful whenever she had questions. Emily found herself engaged in interesting class discussions and started to see the potential for new friendships. She was excited to explore more of the school and welcome this new chapter of her life. She was ready to face the rest of the day with a more positive attitude. Although the move had been scary, it had also opened up new opportunities.

For me.

A. Assessed. B. Employed. C. Detected. D. Invented.
31 What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Listen with Your Skin B. Hear Your Sixth Sense
C. To Listen or Not D. Here to Hear.
A. Correct. B. Outdated. C. Unclear. D. Scientific.
33 What can we know about the ELO’s definition of digital literature?
A. It failed to provide the guidelines. B. It didn’t allow for newer technologies.
C It could easily lead to misunderstandings. D. It took into consideration only literary aspects.
34. Which of the following belongs to digital literature according to the author?
A. A video game. B. A printed novel.
C. A blog comment. D. A story on Twine.
35. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To clarify a concept. B. To introduce a theory.
C. To advocate e-learning. D. To explain a phenomenon.
