One day, I was sitting in a local coffee shop, and staring at this man in a wheelchair. He could move his head and parts of his fingers but nothing else. He had a servant who cut up his food and placed it on a special mechanically powered fork that he would use to eat.
He saw me staring at him and invited me to join him at his table: His name was Stephen. For several hours we sat at that table and we got to know each other on a deeply personal level. I had never known a man who was more radiant (容光焕发), more energizing to talk and get to know than Stephen.
Stephen used to be a very successful businessman in Denver. He was in the natural gas business. Thirteen years before when he was forty, he was waiting for news of a natural gas discovery to occur any moment.
He said, “I had so much nervous energy. I saw the storm clouds gathering, and I decided to clean out the gutters (檐沟) rather than sitting around waiting for this gas well to come in.”
He climbed up the ladder to clear the piles of pine needles on the roof. As he backed up, he accidentally fell off the roof. He landed on his back. He was paralyzed (瘫痪) for the rest of his life, except for his head and his hand.
I asked him, “How do you do it all? How do you suddenly stop hiking, fishing, and running marathons?” He said, “There are three things you have to do when something like this happens. The first thing you have to do is adjust. The second thing you do is adjust. And the third thing you do is adjust.”
He said, “By adjusting to your abilities, Bill, you have to change your self-expectations. If you can’t be a physical athlete any longer, then perhaps you can be a spiritual athlete.” He was.

C. he was staring at the author D. he ate in a special way
42. What was Stephen’s occupation before his accident?
A. He was a coffee shop owner. B. He was a servant for the disabled.
C. He was a professional athlete D. He was in the natural gas business.
43. What caused Stephen’s accident?
A. He was waiting for news of a natural gas discovery.
B. He was cleaning out the gutters and fell off the ladder.
C. He was hiking and slipped on a mountain trail,
D. He was running a marathon and collapsed.
44. “A spiritual athlete” Stephen mentioned in the last paragraph might be ________.
A. humorous and sensitive B. optimistic and open-minded
C. faithful and easygoing D. sympathetic and caring
45. What advice did Stephen give about dealing with a major life change like his?
A. One should adjust to the new abilities and change self-expectations,
B. One should find a completely new hobby immediately.
C. One should give up all hope and accept the new situation.
D. One should try to go back to the old way of life as soon as possible.

Many people confuse hard-working people with workaholics (工作狂). What are some characteristics of workaholics? How could a person tell that he/ she is a workaholic? A workaholic works long hours, at the expense of personal relationships and health. When not working, they’re thinking about work. Work influences their mood: When work is going well, they’re up; when work is going less well, they’re down.
Working, or simply being busy, can be a hard habit to break. When workaholics aren’t busy working — or doing something to promote their work — they feel anxious and guilty.
There is a link between health problems and workaholism. Just because work itself is a respectable pursuit (追求) doesn’t mean that an addiction to it is any less damaging than other sorts of addictions. A number of studies show that workaholism has been associated with a wide range of health problems, such as anxiety and heart disease
Besides health problems, being a workaholic brings other negative effects as well. A study found that working too much negatively influenced an employee’s marriage. This isn’t surprising, since if you’re married to your work it can be difficult to be married to anything, or anyone, else. There have also been studies looking at the influence of workaholic parents on their children and the news isn’t good. Adult children of workaholic fathers experienced more depression and anxiety and a weaker sense of self.
However, there are also many positive aspects to working hard and to an increasing devotion to career. Hard work can bring great rewards. For many, it’s how they develop feelings of self worth and confidence and purpose. If you have a workaholic in your life you might point out the things he or she is missing out on while at work, whether it’s a child’s soccer game, a good book, or a yoga class. Seek to understand why the person feels the need to work so much and support them in finding a resolution.
46. What can we learn from the text?
A. Workaholics work to build better relationships.
B. Hard-working people enjoy better health than other people do.
C. Work has stronger effects on workaholics than on others.
D. Workaholics care more about their health than others do.
47. When workaholics are not busy working, they ________.
A. promote their work B. form a bad habit easily
C. have a chance to prove their own value D. feel uneasy and insecure
48. What are Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about?
A. How people deal with their addictions.
B. Different patterns of workaholics.
C. Bad influences of workaholism.
D. How hard-working people differ from workaholics.
49. What is the author’s attitude towards working hard?
A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Curious.
50. What can we do to help a workaholic in life?
A. Try to be understanding and supporting. B. Reward him for his hard work.
C. Help him find self worth and confidence. D. Force him to join family activities.
D
It’s essential for parents to teach their kids financial responsibility and that money should be earned. Still many child-development experts agree that tying a child’s allowance to chores (家务劳动) can be a slippery slope. Here’s why.
Susie Walton, master instructor at Peace in Your Home advises to keep chores and allowances totally separate. “Allowance is one thing. When it comes to chores, life skills, responsibilities — that’s a whole different thing,” says Walton.
Walton says, “When kids aren’t doing a chore, you don’t say, ‘Well, there goes your allowance.’ You’re going to sit them down and ask what’s going on. ‘We’re a team. We’re a family. We’ve got to have them done.”
Besides, by paying children for chores with an allowance, you’ll also be sending the message that work isn’t worth doing unless they’re getting paid for it.
There are times when it would make sense to pay kids for chores. Most financial and child-development experts agree that it’s a fine idea to pay children money for extra jobs that are outside their normal set of chores, such as washing windows, washing the car or helping to clean out the garage— especially if the child is saving for a big item. This may even develop an entrepreneurial (企业家的) spirit to think outside of the box to earn money.
For parents who are concerned that their children won’t learn the value of a dollar if the allowance isn’t tied to household chores, note that there are still plenty of money management skills to be learned from a straight allowance. Depending on the age, kids can be made responsible for paying for their own toys or snacks. Some parents even require that kids set aside a percentage of their allowance towards savings.
“I really like having my own money,” says Kevin, 9. “It’s up to me if I want to buy the cheap toy now, or save and get the better toy.” And that’s a good lesson to learn at 9 years old.
No matter which allowance route you take in parenthood, kids will feel empowered by being able to handle their own money.
51. Which of the following would Susie Walton probably agree with?
A. Kids should be paid for doing chores all the time.
B. A child’s allowance shouldn’t be tied to chores.
C. Doing chores teaches kids the value of work.
D. Kids shouldn’t be forced to do chores at home.
52. According to Susie Walton, if kids don’t do chores, parents should ________
A. teach them the entrepreneurial spirit
B give them a smaller allowance than usual
C. talk to them about family responsibilities
D. punish them by not giving them allowance
53. In Para. 6 “a straight allowance” probably means “________”.
A. money earned by kids themselves by doing part-time jobs
B. money given by charity organizations
C. money given by parents and not dependent on chores
D. money earned by doing everyday chores
54. What is the author’s attitude towards Kevin’s action?
A. Unfavorable. B. Worried. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.
55. The text is mainly about ________.
A. the importance of kids helping parents with chores
B. whether parents should pay kids for chores
C. the advantages of kids handling their own money
D. parents should give kids regular allowances

I used to be a selfish girl and I only thought of myself. I did not care about helping others, but only about my look, clothes, money and grades.
One day, I was suddenly influenced by my neighbor, who is now in college, and ended up wanting to volunteer for others. He had so much fun with volunteering and told me that he felt extremely good after helping others. I hoped to get the same results, for I felt worthless everywhere then. I viewed almost everything in a negative way, and I figured I had to experience something that would make me appreciate things that I had.
I volunteered at the nursing home for a year where my neighbor volunteered. I brought snacks, coffee and games for the elderly patients, talked to them while sharing snacks, and played games like chess and checkers them. Because they were Koreans, they often had trouble communicating with the helpers who were hired to help them. I sometimes translated things for them and offered to be their translator whenever they needed help.
By volunteering at the nursing home, I changed a lot. I realized how lucky I am to speak both Korean and English and that I should help other people learn Korean as well. I had learned many life lessons through volunteering. By helping others, I felt needed in society. Not only did it enhance my confidence, but it also allowed others to benefit from it.
Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve oneself, others, and the whole society. So if you ever have the chance, volunteer! It’s something you won't regret!

B. give them a smaller allowance than usual
C. talk to them about family responsibilities
D. punish them by not giving them allowance
53. In Para. 6, “a straight allowance” probably means “________”.
A. money earned by kids themselves by doing part-time jobs
B. money given by charity organizations
C. money given by parents and not dependent on chores
D. money earned by doing everyday chores
54. What is the author’s attitude towards Kevin’s action?
A. Unfavorable. B. Worried. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.
55. The text is mainly about ________.
A. the importance of kids helping parents with chores
B. whether parents should pay kids for chores
C. the advantages of kids handling their own money
D. parents should give kids regular allowances
【答案】51 B 52. C 53. C 54. D 55. B
根据文章第二段“Susie Walton, master instructor at Peace in Your Home advises to keep chores and allowances totally separate. “Allowance is one thing. When it comes to chores, life skills, responsibilities — that’s a whole different thing,” says Walton.(“家庭和谐”项目资深导师Susie Walton建议,应将家务劳动与零花钱完全分开。“零花钱是一回事,而家务劳动、生活技能和责任感,则完全是另一回事。”Walton表示。)”可知,Susie Walton建议将家务劳动与零花钱完全分开,即不赞同将孩子的零花钱与家务挂钩。故选B。
【52题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Walton says, “When kids aren’t doing a chore, you don’t say, ‘Well, there goes your allowance.’ You’re going to sit them down and ask what’s going on. ‘We’re a team. We’re a family. We’ve got to have them done.”(Walton解释道:“如果孩子没做家务,家长不该说‘好吧,你的零花钱没了’。正确的做法是让孩子坐下来,和他们沟通到底出了什么问题。然后告诉他们:‘我们是一个团队,一个家庭,这些家务必须完成。’”)”可知,Susie Walton认为,若孩子没做家务,家长不应取消其零花钱,而应让孩子坐下来沟通,并向他们强调家庭是团队,需共同完成家务的责任。故选C。
【53题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第六段“For parents who are concerned that their children won’t learn the value of a dollar if the allowance isn’t tied to household chores, note that there are still plenty of money management skills to be learned from a straight allowance.(对于那些担心孩子如果零用钱与家务劳动无关就不会懂得金钱价值的父母来说,请注意,……也能让孩子学到很多理财技能。)”可知,该句是针对“家长担心零花钱不与家务挂钩,孩子就无法理解金钱价值”这一顾虑的回应,由此可推断 “a straight allowance”指的是“不与家务挂钩的零花钱”。选项C“money given by parents and not dependent on chores(父母给的钱,且不取决于做家务的情况)”与此相符。
根据文章第七段““I really like having my own money,” says Kevin, 9. “It’s up to me if I want to buy the cheap toy now, or save and get the better toy.” And that’s a good lesson to learn at 9 years old.( 9岁的Kevin说:“我真的很喜欢有自己的钱。我可以决定是现在买便宜的玩具,还是存起来买更好的玩具。”这在9岁时学到是个很好的一课。)”可知,作者明确评价Kevin现在买便宜玩具还是存钱买更好的玩具的自主选择是9岁孩子该学到的好道理,体现出对Kevin行为的认可态度。故选D。
【55题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Still many child-development experts agree that tying a child’s allowance to chores (家务劳动) can be a slippery slope. Here’s why.(然而,许多儿童发展专家认为,将孩子的零花钱与家务劳动挂钩可能会引发一系列问题。原因如下。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要围绕“零花钱是否应与家务挂钩”展开讨论,说明了专家的建议,回应了家长的顾虑,因此,文章主要讨论了家长是否应该为孩子做家务支付零花钱。故选B。

第一节 阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读表达
