Will Gladstone, an amateur birder, was in his 5th-grade science class when he first heard of the blue-footed booby, a beautiful, eye-catching bird. He learned that the population of this particular bird was in decline. Will decided to raise money to support conservation efforts. As he was brainstorming ideas, he looked down at his feet, and suddenly he had an idea. Feet, he thought, blue feet! He decided to sell bright blue socks and donate the money to environmental organizations trying to help the birds. His younger brother Matty joined him in his effort as his partner. The boys started the Blue Feet Foundation (BFF) in 2016.
In the beginning, it was a challenge for the boys to gather support for their cause. They decided to ask a better-known conservation organization to sponsor them. However, none were willing to do so. “They didn’t agree to it because we were just kids,” says Will.
Although this was discouraging, the two persevered. Finally, they came across an organization they hadn’t heard of before: the Galapagos Conservancy (GC). Its mission was to support conservation in the Galapagos Islands. These islands are home to about half of the world’s blue-footed boobies. They offered to highlight the foundation in the protection’s newsletter. It boosted the BFF’s credibility.
Four years later, their hard work paid off. They amassed over 18,000 Instagram followers and 10,000 Facebook followers. They sold 18,000 pairs of socks, sending them all across the globe. Orders have come from 50 different countries. If you visit the picture gallery on their website, you’ll also see blue socks being modeled by a few famous people, including members of the Blue Man Group and a Boston Bruins hockey player.
Although the population of these birds in the Galapagos has declined significantly over the past 20 years, we have seen some hopeful signs. These include an increase in young birds. However, there is still work to be done. Although the decline in population is slowing, it’s not reversing. Elderly birds are dying faster than chicks are being born.
4. Which of the following can best define the boys?
A. Ambitious daydreamers. B. Active bird researchers.
C. Good problem solvers. D. Passionate science fans.
5. What contributed to Conservancy’s decision to help the boys?
A. Their consistent goals.
B. Their accidental meet.
C. Their equal credibility.
D. Their financial strength.
6. What’s the purpose of listing the numbers in Paragraph 4?
A. To promote the fame of the Foundation.
B. To show the popularity of the boys’ socks.
C. To highlight the impact of the Foundation.
D. To demonstrate the diversity of the customer base.
7. What can be learned about the bird population from the last paragraph?
A. It remains stable. B. It remains declining.
C. It is increasing shockingly. D. It is undergoing ups and downs.

Have you ever felt that mosquitoes love you more than others? While your friends remain untouched, you find yourself constantly hunted by these annoying insects. Well, it’s not your imagination. Science confirms that around 20% of people are naturally high attractors, or mosquito magnets, who are more often targeted year after year — and biology is to blame.
The primary signal that draws mosquitoes from a distance is the carbon dioxide (CO₂) we breathe out. Capable of spotting a stream of CO₂ from up to 30 meters away, mosquitoes use this gas as a “dinner bell” signaling that a warm-blooded host is nearby. Once they pick up this clue, they start moving toward the source.
However, as mosquitoes get closer, your unique body smell becomes the deciding factor. Our skin is home to millions of microbes (微生物) that break down natural oils and sweat, producing a complex cocktail of chemical compounds. According to a significant study published in the journal Cell, individuals who are mosquito magnets tend to produce much higher levels of specific types of acids on their skin. These acids act like an irresistible smell to mosquitoes. In contrast, those less attractive produce more ketones, which seem to mask their smells, making them invisible to mosquitoes.
To test this, researchers designed an experiment in a large enclosed arena — about the size of a land-skating rink. They released mosquitoes and observed how they chose between different people. The results showed that mosquitoes consistently flew toward those with certain skin smells.
Other factors like body heat, sweat, and genetic makeup also play a role. Since our skin microbiome is largely genetically determined, being a mosquito magnet is often a matter of bad luck.
Importantly, this research isn’t just about avoiding itchy bites. Every year, millions of people die from mosquito-borne diseases. Understanding how mosquitoes find us can inspire scientists to find better solutions. So next time mosquitoes buzz around you, remember: it’s not a curse—it’s science. And soon, we might have smarter ways to outsmart these bothersome biters.
8. What function does carbon dioxide serve for mosquitoes?
A. It acts as an appetizer. B. It provides a nutrient source.
C. It helps locate human’s presence. D. It distinguishes human skin types.
9. What is the key factor that makes some people more attractive to mosquitoes?
A. The microbes living on their skin. B. The natural oils produced by their skin.
C. A great deal of CO₂ breathed out by them. D. Large amounts of certain acids on their skin.
10. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Body temperature is the most critical factor.
B. Being a mosquito magnet is largely unchangeable.
C. Diet and lifestyle habits influence mosquitoes’ choices.
D. People can improve their genetic makeup to avoid mosquitoes.
11. According to the text, what might be the significance of the research?
A. Revealing how mosquitoes find targets.
B. Explaining why some people attract mosquitoes.
C. Contributing to how we battle against mosquitoes.
D. Proving that smell affects mosquitoes’ biting preferences.

How alike are parents and kids? I, for example, am competitive like my dad; my sister got my mother’s sympathy. My husband and his mom, meanwhile, share a lively debating style; it’s why their conversations get so…animated.
It’s an assumption that goes beyond geography: There are “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” equivalents worldwide — mostly tree-related, although I like the Portuguese “a fish’s child knows how to swim”.
And it’s reinforced culturally. There is a proverb that goes like this, “like father, like son”. It feels true, intuitively (直觉地). But the thing is, it’s not. This isn’t news: Psychologists have known for ages that parents and children don’t particularly share the main personality characteristics. It is getting attention now because of a study that tried to change the way this question of family similarity is explored. Rather than participants only self-reporting their personalities, they also chose a third party who knew them well to assess them.
This novel approach suggested more similarities between parents and children approximately 40% rather than the 25% of previous studies. But that is still very low. The study concluded that it was “impossible to accurately predict a child’s personality characteristics from those of their mother or father” and that most relatives are not “much more similar than strangers”. The same study’s findings on the impact of home environment show than “Growing up together does not make people more similar.”
But parents aren’t off the hook. Last year, a study of 9.400 11-to 17-year-olds declared: “Parent personalities have a significant impact on a child’s life.” The detailed results concluded: “Kids with neurotic (神经质的) parents scored relatively low on several measures, including grades, overall health, body mass index…and time spent on leisure activities.”
As one psychologist has put it, the most direct way to weigh nature against nurture (培养) is “to randomly assign children to parents”, but the real challenge is, you can’t double-blind — randomize parenting, if so, we are left tripping up in the dark.
12. How does the author illustrate the universality of the idea that kids are like parents?
A. Through analysis. B. Through proverbs.
C. Through stories. D. Through comparison.
13. What is special about the new study on family similarity?
A. It does more experiments. B. It makes use of other people’s assessments.
C. It adopts the advice of psychologists. D. It explains the participants’ self-reports.
14. What do we know about the result of the novel study?
A. It’s imprecise. B. It’s the same as previous result.
C. It’s persuasive. D. It’s against traditional understanding.
15. What does the writer suggest in the last two paragraphs?
A. Giving advice on parenting. B. Training kids to behave well.
C. Improving kids’ personalities. D. Encouraging kids to learn from their parents.

We tend to respect and even idolize those who exhibit a lot of willpower. That colleague who manages to stay calm and focused in nearly every situation. The social media influencer who maintains a particularly decorated, camera-ready home. ____16____ Research suggests that these people are not only viewed as trustworthy but also morally superior. How can we mere mortals (凡人) compare?
It seems that some are born with stronger self-control. ____17____ Traditionally, psychologists have defined self-control as the ability to wait for later, larger rewards. But it can also be thought of as a way to alter your thoughts, feelings and behaviors to reach a specific goal. When we have self-control, we can resist unhealthy impulses and persevere when we feel like quitting, experts say.
____18____ To improve willpower, it boils down to “just try harder,” said Kentaro Fujita, a professor of psychology at Ohio State University who studies self-regulation and decision making. ____19____ Preparation, mind-set and the ability to either avoid or reframe temptation (诱惑) can be far more effective than trying to “force that desire down,” Dr. Fujita said. There are multiple strategies for improving self-control. Research suggests that trying several is more effective than picking just one.
First, create routines. People who are good at self-control tend to structure their lives and avoid having to make decisions in the moment. This could be by scheduling the same activity at the same time each day. Second, monitor your progress. Keep notes tracking what you have done each day toward your goal. ____20____ Also, edit your inner circle. People who support you and lift you up will give you a greater capacity for self-control.
A. What is self-control and why does it matter?
B. The friend who hits up the gym five times a week.
C. Willpower shouldn’t be confused with self-control.
D. Research indicates that willpower is the best strategy.
E. And it takes both efforts and time to develop willpower.
F. But self-control involves a set of skills that can be learned.
G. Monitoring is the easiest and fastest way to improve self-control.

The moment Michael Armus set foot into the Bank of the West in Woodland, California, to deposit a check, he felt the tension. “Something’s not right.”
The cheerful greetings he usually received were absent. Tellers avoided eye contact, their faces pale. The bank manager sat rigidly at his desk, head lowered.
Armus looked to his left and noticed a man at another window with his striped T-shirt pulled up to partially hide his face. “This is a robbery,” thought Armus.
He heard the man say, “I don’t want to hurt anybody.” Minutes earlier, the man had passed a note to the teller demanding cash and saying he had a gun. Armus looked again and the man’s shirt had dropped a bit, exposing more of his face. Just at that moment, Armus recognized the would-be robber as someone he’d passed several times on a street corner reading aloud from his Bible and speaking to passersby.
Walking closer, Armus gently asked, “What’s wrong? Don’t you have a job?” The man froze, tears spilling down his cheeks. “There’s nothing in this town for me! I just want to go to prison!”
The raw despair reminded Armus of his own dark past — down and out, been to prison. His life was a mess. But he got another chance. Suddenly, instead of being frightened, Armus felt compassion for him, and a thought popped into his head: Maybe I can help.
注意:

根据第二段中“The primary signal that draws mosquitoes from a distance is the carbon dioxide (CO₂) we breathe out. Capable of spotting a stream of CO₂ from up to 30 meters away, mosquitoes use this gas as a “dinner bell” signaling that a warm-blooded host is nearby.(将蚊子从远处吸引过来的主要信号是我们呼出的二氧化碳。蚊子能够从30米外发现一股二氧化碳,它们将这种气体作为“开饭铃声”,表明附近有温血宿主)”可知,蚊子利用二氧化碳来定位温血宿主的存在,即帮助它们定位人类的存在。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“According to a significant study published in the journal Cell, individuals who are mosquito magnets tend to produce much higher levels of specific types of acids on their skin. These acids act like an irresistible smell to mosquitoes.(根据发表在《细胞》杂志上的一项重要研究,那些特别吸引蚊子的人往往会在皮肤上产生更高水平的特定类型的酸。这些酸对蚊子来说就像一种无法抗拒的气味)”可知,某些人皮肤上产生的大量特定类型的酸是吸引蚊子的关键因素。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Other factors like body heat, sweat, and genetic makeup also play a role. Since our skin microbiome is largely genetically determined, being a mosquito magnet is often a matter of bad luck.(其他因素如体温、汗液和基因构成也会产生影响。由于我们的皮肤微生物群主要由基因决定,招蚊子体质往往只能归咎于运气不佳)”可知,成为特别吸引蚊子的人很大程度上是由基因决定的,难以改变。故选B项。

D
B 13. B 14. D 15. A

根据文章第二段“It’s an assumption that goes beyond geography: There are “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” equivalents worldwide — mostly tree-related, although I like the Portuguese “a fish’s child knows how to swim”.(这种想法并不局限于某个特定的地域:世界各地都有类似“有其父必有其子(字面意思:苹果不会落在离树很远的地方)”这样的说法——而且大多和树有关,不过我倒是很喜欢葡萄牙的那句谚语“鱼的孩子天生会游泳”。)”以及第三段“There is a proverb that goes like this, “like father, like son”.(有一句谚语是这样说的:“有其父必有其子。”)”
根据文章第三段“Rather than participants only self-reporting their personalities, they also chose a third party who knew them well to assess them.(参与者们不仅要自我报告自己的性格,还要选择一个熟悉他们的第三方来对他们进行评估。)”
根据文章第四段“This novel approach suggested more similarities between parents and children approximately 40% rather than the 25% of previous studies. But that is still very low. The study concluded that it was “impossible to accurately predict a child’s personality characteristics from those of their mother or father” and that most relatives are not “much more similar than strangers”. The same study’s findings on the impact of home environment show than “Growing up together does not make people more similar.”(这种新颖的研究方法表明,父母和孩子之间的相似性大约为40%,而之前的研究结果仅为25%。但这个比例仍然非常低。该研究得出的结论是,“不可能根据父母的性格特征准确预测孩子的性格特征”,而且大多数亲属之间“并不比陌生人更相似”。同一项研究中关于家庭环境影响的研究结果表明,“一起长大并不会让人们变得更相似”。)”可知,新研究结果与传统上认为父母和孩子相似的认知相悖。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“Last year, a study of 9.400 11-to 17-year-olds declared: “Parent personalities have a significant impact on a child’s life.” The detailed results concluded: “Kids with neurotic(神经质的)parents scored relatively low on several measures, including grades, overall health, body mass index…and time spent on leisure activities.”(去年,一项针对9400名11岁至17岁青少年的研究宣称:“父母的性格对孩子的生活有着重大影响。”详细的研究结果总结道:“父母神经质的孩子在几个方面的得分相对较低,包括成绩、整体健康状况、身体质量指数…… 以及用于休闲活动的时间。”)”可知,父母的性格对孩子有重大影响,不良的父母性格会导致孩子在一些方面表现不佳。而文章最后一段“As one psychologist has put it, the most direct way to weigh nature against nurture (培养) is “to randomly assign children to parents”, but the real challenge is, you can’t double-blind — randomize parenting, if so, we are left tripping up in the dark.(正如一位心理学家所说,衡量先天因素和后天培养哪个更重要的最直接方法是“随机地将孩子分配给父母”,但真正的挑战在于,你不能在双盲的情况下——随机安排父母的角色,如果是这样的话,我们就只能在黑暗中摸索了。)” 故选A。

Nature’s Healing: Hands Off or Hands On?

Nature’s Healing: Hands Off or Hands On?
From my perspective, restoring damaged ecosystems requires a wise combination of respecting nature’s self-healing power and applying advanced technology.
Nature has an incredible ability to recover on its own: when protected from human disturbance like deforestation or overfishing, degraded forests and wetlands can gradually regenerate, supporting native wildlife naturally. However, for severely polluted areas or species on the edge of extinction, technology offers critical help — such as AI monitoring for endangered animals and eco-friendly cleanup tools. Only by balancing the two can we best protect our planet.

“Let’s talk outside,” Armus suggested, putting his arm around the man. Remarkably, the man agreed and the two walked out of the bank. Once outside, Armus wrapped the man in a warm hug, and the would-be robber began to sob in his embrace. Armus sat him down on a bench and listened intently as the man poured out his woes. He’d lost his job, his family drowning in debt, and he saw no way out. Armus shared his own story of redemption, offering hope. Slowly, the man’s shoulders relaxed, and he began to see a glimmer of a different future. It turned out that the man, who was eventually charged with attempted robbery, never had a gun. The police arrived, but Armus pleaded for mercy, believing everyone deserved a second chance.
Praised for easing a tense situation by a warm hug, Armus was modest. “I heard something in his voice,” Armus explained. He empathized how desperate the man had to be, to be throwing his life away like this for Armus himself deeply knew what it’s like to feel hopeless and helpless. “I just saw myself in him,” he said. “We all make mistakes, and sometimes all it takes is for someone to show a little kindness.” Armus even offered to help the man find a job and get back on his feet. His actions not only averted a tragedy that day but also became a powerful reminder that compassion and understanding can transform lives and turn desperate situations around.
