“We’ve all got money,” one of them said, “but we haven’t got enough workers. It’s very difficult to find people to help us on our plantations (种植园).”
“We need some slaves,” another said. “Some slaves from Africa.”
“We want to send a ship there to bring some back,” said the third. “But one of us must go to choose the slaves. You know Africa, Robinson. You are the best person to go. What do you say?”
They looked at me with worried faces while waiting for my reply.
“I have an easy life here,” I thought. “It isn’t a good idea to leave everything and go to sea again.”
But I went. How stupid I was!
We sailed north along the coast. At Cape Saint Augustino, we changed direction and went east. Soon the land was far behind us and all we could see was water. At first the weather was good — it was sunny and hot. Then one morning it changed suddenly. A strong wind began to blow and the sky filled with big black clouds.
“Oh, no! A storm!” I thought and I went below deck.
The wind got stronger and the sea got rougher. Our brave captain tried to keep the ship on its course, but he couldn’t. The wind blew it across the sea for twelve days.
“We’re all going to die,” I thought.
When the weather started to get better at last, the captain and I tried to find our position on a map.
“The storm took us north,” he said. “I think we must be near here.” He pointed to the mouth of the river Orinoco.
“The ship is full of holes,” he went on. We need to repair them. “We must go back to Brazil.”
“No,” I said. “We aren’t far from the island of Barbados. We must go there. They speak English and we can find people to help us repair the ship.”
So we sailed north-east into the Caribbean Sea.
We were making good progress when there was another storm. Once again the strong wind blew our ship off its course. This time it took us west and away from Barbados. We were going towards unknown lands. The lands of cannibals (食人者)!
“The future doesn’t look good!” I thought unhappily. “Dying in the sea or in a cooking pot!”
The storm continued for several days.

You must have heard of “city bu city” (meaning city or not city), an Internet modern word created by foreign blogger Baobaoxiong. People use it to ask if a place feels like a big, fashionable city.
Millions of foreigners like Baobaoxiong are visiting China and posting their travel videos. The visa-free transit policy (过境免签政策) is important in this trend (潮流). Travelers from 54 countries can stay in China for up to six days without a visa if they have a travel document (文件) and a connecting ticket (联运机票).
The visa-free transit policy started in 2013. Back then, it let travelers to stay for 72 hours in seven different big cities in China. It found foreigners visited famous places of interest like the Forbidden City and the Great Wall in the past. Parents of twins often say their children are a little unusual or a bit special. However, according to 16-year-old twin Gerald Scott, there are ways in which some sets of twins are quite amazing.
“My twin, Owen, and I have had a very special bond (关系) since we were born. When we were very small, we had our own language. Our mum says we used to talk to each other using our own special language. We knew what we were saying but nobody else understood. Even our mother didn’t understand us. As we got older, we started using telepathy to communicate. Sometimes we don’t need to speak at all; we just use our minds. We can somehow send messages to each other even when we aren’t in the same place. I know it sounds unbelievable, but I’ve always known if Owen was in trouble. Once he had a bad fall in rugby-he broke his leg and when it happened, I got this terrible pain in my leg.”
Although it sounds strange, telepathy between twins isn’t so unusual. There have been a lot of studies which have proved that some twins have this ability. One experiment involved eight-year-old Richard Powles and his twin, Damien. First, they were put in separate (隔开的), soundless rooms, and Damien was wired up to a machine that measured his responses (反应). Richard was then asked to put his arm into ice cold water. At the exact moment he put his arm into the water, Damien’s responses went wild. And it was the same whenever anything scary or surprising happened to Richard, his brother in the other room reacted too.
There have been cases between famous twins too. Actor Ashley Olsen tells us that, even when they are far away from each other, she knows when her twin sister, Mary Kate, is going through a difficult time or when she isn’t happy.
34.What does the underlined word telepathy mean?
A.A language that only a few people can understand.
B.A language that is only for twins around the world.
C.A way of sending messages without using words.
D.A way to speak to very close family members.
35.Which of the following is a fact?
A.Richard Powles and Damien were able to use telepathy to communicate.
B.Richard Powles and Damien did an experiment to show they were unusual.
C.Gerald Scott and Owen’s parents speak different languages at home.
D.Gerald Scott and Owen began to learn new languages when they got older.
36.The following sentence can best go after _________.
So, maybe it’s true—maybe some twins don’t need words at all to speak to each other.
A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 2. C.Paragraph 3. D.Paragraph 4.

37.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Some twins like to share their ideas with themselves.
B.Studies show some twins can communicate specially.

D.Twins have special abilities when they are not together.

35.推理判断题。根据第三段“One experiment involved eight-year-old Richard Powles and his twin, Damien. First, they were put in separate, soundless rooms, and Damien was wired up to a machine that measured his responses. Richard was then asked to put his arm into ice cold water. At the exact moment he put his arm into the water, Damien’s responses went wild. ”可知,八岁的理查德.波尔斯和他的双胞胎兄弟达米安。首先,他们被放在单独的、无声的房间里,达米安被连接到一台机器上,测量他的反应。然后理查德被要求把他的胳膊放进冰冷的水中。就在他把手伸进水里的那一刻,达米安的反应变得疯狂。由此可知,理查德.波尔斯和达米安能够用心灵感应进行交流。故选A。
36.细节理解题。根据第四段“Actor Ashley Olsen tells us that, even when they are far away from each other, she knows when her twin sister, Mary Kate, is going through a difficult time or when she isn’t happy.”演员艾什丽 . 奥尔森告诉我们,即使他们相距很远,她也知道她的双胞胎妹妹玛丽·凯特什么时候正经历一段困难时期,或者什么时候她不开心。由此可知,“So, maybe it’s true—maybe some twins don’t need words at all to speak to each other.所以,也许这是真的——也许有些双胞胎根本不需要语言来交流。”放在第四段后合适。故选D。
